Matt Damon Says It’s Unlikely He’ll Be Bourne Again

The odds of Matt Damon returning to the big screen as Jason Bourne  are looking longer than ever judging from a conversation I had with the actor on Tuesday night. Damon, who’s still sporting a shaved head for his work on the sci-fi thriller Elysium , was part of the starry crowd that turned out for a special private screening of Argo , which was beautifully directed by his bud and Good Will Hunting co-writer Ben Affleck .  During a dinner at the Porter House steakhouse in the Time Warner Center, I asked Damon if there had been any movement on reports that he could reprise his role after Jeremy Renner’s portrayal of Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy , another agent in the Robert Ludlum-created universe, this past summer. “There has not been any movement,”  Damon told me, explaining that though “I’ve always been open to it as long as Paul Greengrass directs, I don’t think he’s going to do it.”  Damon laughed when he said this, as if, perhaps, he was downplaying how Greengrass really felt about The Bourne Legacy,  or perhaps because he had his own falling-out with Gilroy — who has been a writer on every Bourne film and directed Legacy — over the script to the third movie, The Bourne Ultimatum . Asked why Greengrass was loathe to return to the franchise, Damon said that although he hadn’t seen Legacy  yet,  “from what I understand, it kind of relives [ The Bourne   Ultimatum ] from a different perspective.” ( Legacy is meant to take place concurrently with the events of the third movie, and Jason Bourne is referenced.) “What that means, because they use our actors and characters, is that whatever they said [in Legacy ] is true and so we’d have to acknowledge it in any Bourne movie that we’d do.  And that makes it really tough,” Damon said with another laugh, noting:  “I don’t think we can do the Dallas it-was-all-a-dream scenario . I don’t think the audience would go for that after they paid money to see a movie.” “I’d really love to do another one because I love the character,” Damon said, but then he pointed out another issue that would make it  “a real struggle to extend the franchise”: Bourne’s search to “find his identity” was what drove him through the first three movies. Now that he has answered that question, Damon said, “where do you go next?” Have any ideas, Bourne fans?  Leave them in the comments box below, or copyright them and have your people contact Paul Greengrass’ people. Matt Damon: Jeremy Renner ‘Obvious Choice’ For ‘Bourne Legacy’

‘He’s such a good actor and can carry a movie,’ actor tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jeremy Renner Photo: Getty Images In August, when “The Bourne Legacy” opens in theaters, the man behind Jason Bourne, Matt Damon , won’t be anywhere in sight. At least that’s what the actor says. Damon sat down with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz while promoting his new film, “We Bought a Zoo,” and he insisted he had no part in the fourth “Bourne” movie. “No, I’m not in that one. I haven’t even read the script,” he said. But as a key component of the series, Damon was able to give his take on how “Legacy,” which is being directed by Tony Gilroy, fits in with the previous three films. “My understanding is that it’s like if you think of ‘X-Men’ and then ‘Wolverine,’ the spin-off movie, just think of it in reverse,” he explained. “There’s the Bourne character, and then there’s this whole world. It doesn’t preclude [director] Paul Greengrass and I from doing another [‘Bourne’ movie].” Damon had spoken with the star of “Bourne Legacy,” Jeremy Renner , briefly, but he insisted the conversation didn’t have much to do with the series. “We didn’t really talk about the movie much. I’m just a huge fan of his,” Damon said. When Damon and Greengrass — who directed the second and third “Bourne” films — met to move forward with the series after “Ultimatum,” Renner was a topic of conversation. “When Paul Greengrass and I were talking about the character and maybe doing a fourth one a couple years ago and maybe passing it off to somebody, Renner was the guy we talked about. He’s an obvious choice, because he’s such a good actor and can carry a movie,” he said. For Damon, the “Bourne” movies strike a difficult balance that he feels Renner can successfully handle. “Those movies are really tough, because you need the guy to be internally tortured about something, and Jeremy’s the kind of guy you could watch,” Damon said. “You could remove the action and watch Jeremy just angst over something for two hours, and it could be really compelling.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Bourne Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Matt Damon Says Future Of ‘Bourne’ Franchise Is Uncertain

‘We explained to them that our character isn’t like James Bond,’ the star says of studio’s desire to re-cast Jason Bourne. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in “The Bourne Ultimatum” Photo: Jasin Boland/ Universal Studios Earlier this year, fans of the highly successful “Bourne” franchise got some surprising news when Universal announced its plans to make “The Bourne Legacy” with or without star Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass. Then in October, the studio announced the next installment would be written and directed by Tony Gilroy, who penned the first three “Bourne” films. MTV News caught up with Damon during promotion for his awards-favorite “True Grit,” and asked the actor whether he’d talked to Gilroy about plans for the next chapter. “I have no idea what he has planned,” Damon said of Gilroy. “But he’s a very smart guy, so I’m sure it’s going to be good. I do know that whatever he’s doing won’t preclude Paul [Greengrass] and I from coming back and doing ours,” he added. (It’s still unclear whether Damon and Greengrass will return.) Damon explained that what Universal wants to do with the films is build a lasting franchise — one in which other actors besides Damon can step into the lead role. Of course, Damon and Greengrass aren’t exactly onboard with that idea. “What they ultimately want is a franchise that can kind of go on and on. We explained to them that our character isn’t like James Bond,” Damon said. “You can’t send him on a mission. There’s character development, there’s an arc that the character has traveled through the three movies. You don’t just start over at the beginning of every movie,” he continued. “So I think what they’re looking for is a way to build that in so that they can continue without Paul and me eventually.” Earlier this year, Damon said he would consider stepping into Bourne’s shoes again, but only if the picture was helmed by Greengrass. “I love the character. I love the stories,” Damon said . “But only if Paul Greengrass says he will direct again. So far, though, he’s decided not to. I’d definitely say yes if he went for it. I know he would have a great story, and it would protect the legacy of what we created.” What do you think about a “Bourne” movie without Matt Damon? Who should play Jason Bourne? New ‘Bourne’ Movie Planned As Sequel, Not Prequel

Matt Damon’s participation in the fourth “Bourne” film is unclear. By Eric Ditzian Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in “The Bourne Ultimatum” Photo: Jasin Boland/ Universal Studios Call it the Bourne Determination. Despite the participation of star Matt Damon and two-time franchise director Paul Greengrass being in doubt, Universal is pushing forward with plans for a fourth “Bourne” movie, tentatively called “The Bourne Legacy.” And word is that, in contrast to earlier rumors that the new flick would be a reboot or a prequel, “Legacy” will be a straight sequel. According to reports from Variety and Deadline.com , Universal has hired Tony Gilroy to write the script. Gilroy wrote the first three movies and has also been tapped to write a franchise bible, lending credence to the idea that the fourth film is only the beginning of Universal’s big-screen plans for the “Bourne” universe. “Legacy” — which will not be based on “The Bourne Legacy,” an Eric Lustabader-penned novel in the Robert Ludlum series — is looking at a 2012 release date. The news that the forthcoming “Bourne” film will be a sequel comes as something of a surprise. Earlier this year, Damon said the next installment would likely be a prequel . But whether or not Damon and Greengrass will take part in the fourth film is an open question. Back in February, Damon said he wouldn’t reprise the role without Greengrass, who bowed out of his directing duties last fall. Yet both men left the door open to returning to the franchise down the line. “We see a very clear way that they could go [with the story] that wouldn’t interfere with the series that we have and that might give it a chance to have a life right now and if we come back and did another one, even after that without us,” . That “very clear way” seemingly involved rebooting the franchise with another actor taking Bourne’s identity, or name given to a uniquely positioned government operative. Such a storytelling technique would easily allow Damon and Greengrass to reenter the fold in the future. But with Gilroy back in charge of storytelling duties, there’s always the chance that Damon and Greengrass can be enticed to return. As the director himself , he maintains a good relationship with the studio and he plans to work with Damon again. “I’m going to continue to make movies for Universal,” Greengrass told us in March. “I’m going to continue to make movies with Matt hopefully. They’ll undoubtedly continue to make ‘Bourne’ movies. So it’s all good news.”
