Rehtaeh Parsons, Canadian Teen, Kills Herself Due to Alleged Rape and Bullying

Rehtaeh Parsons, a 17-year old in Nova Scotia, hanged herself last week as the result of fallout from an alleged rape in 2011. The teenager’s mother, Leah, told the CBC that four boys assaulted her daughter two years ago, even taking a photo of the incident and posting it online. Leah took Rehtaeh – who battled anger and depression and had been hospitalized on at least one occasion between the rape and suicide – off life support on Sunday. After a year-long investigation, police concluded there was not sufficient evidence to pursue any charges against the culprits. According to the CBC, countless comments were posted on a Facebook page set up in tribute to Parsons, urging someone be held accountable for this tragic death. Nova Scotia Justice Minister Ross Landry said yesterday that he plans to meet with Leah soon to “discuss her experience with the justice system,” adding that he’s been reviewing details of the case and consulting with officials. “I know that law enforcement and the public prosecution service do their best, every day, to administer and enforce the law,” Landry said in a statement. “I am committed to exploring the mechanisms that exist to review the actions of all relevant authorities to ensure the system is always working to the best of its ability, in pursuit of justice.”

For Discussion: Does Making The Morning After Pill Available Over The Counter For All Ages Just Promote Promiscuity? [Poll]

Now that you can pick these Plan B pills up anywhere, will more kids start having sex and protection start coming off? In case you missed it, a federal judge has just made it legal for ANYBODY to pick up a pack of Plan B over the counter after a sex slip-up. Via Salon reports : A U.S. District Court has ordered the Food and Drug Administration to make the “morning after pill” available over-the-counter to women of all ages, overturning previous restrictions requiring women under the age of 17 to obtain a prescription for emergency contraception. According to the ruling, drug companies can now apply to make emergency contraception available without age restrictions and at stores other than just pharmacies and health clinics. U.S. District Court Judge Edward Korman said of the ruling: “The decisions of the Secretary with respect to Plan B One-Step and that of the FDA with respect to the Citizen Petition, which it had no choice but to deny, were arbitrary, capricious, and unreasonable.” Nancy Northup, president and CEO for the Center for Reproductive Rights, the organization that renewed the lawsuit against the FDA, applauded the ruling: “This landmark court decision has struck a huge blow to the deep-seated discrimination that has for too long denied women access to a full range of safe and effective birth control methods.” “Women all over the country will no longer face arbitrary delays and barriers just to get emergency contraception,” she added. We’ve seen a lot of outcry from parents who seem to think this decision interferes with their ability to communicate with their teens about sex. Do you agree? Take Our Poll

Animal House: Bieber’s Freeloading Friends Using His Crib For Wild Sex Parties That Put Charlie Sheen To Shame

Even when Bieber is away his boys will play… Via National Enquirer reports : Bieber’s mega-mansion has been transformed into the ultimate bachelor pad by his sin-crazed buds who throw all-night bashes while he is on tour. “There are usually only five dudes and about 42 girls,” a regular raver at Casa Bieber in Calabasas, Calif., tells RadarOnline. “A couple of them are pole dancers and the rest are just girls that everyone knows. All the guys are pretty much hooking up with all he women, they find two or three girls that they like a night. “The parties are pretty wild, it is like an insane frat party but with way less dudes and a lot more hot chicks! They go on until about 4 or 5 in the morning.” But, not all the rumors about the party pad are true, claims the source. “Everyone is saying there is a lot of ‘sizzurp’ (codeine syrup) but that’s not true, the only drug used by some people is maryjane,” he explains. “Then other people (sucking down) Ciroc vodka or Stella Artois beer. “Justin knows about the parties and doesn’t mind – but there’s always a bodyguard to make sure no girls are taking pictures. Everyone who comes in has to sign (a non-disclosure waiver) and leave their cell phone at the door with security.” Spread out on 1.3 acres of land and covering 10,000 square feet, the mega-mansion turned party central is luckily so huge that even the closest neighbors can’t hear the mayhem that’s going on inside the property, reveals the party-goer. “We haven’t heard anything from the neighbors because the house is so big and we usually keep it in one room – the Hookah Lounge – and then go out and party in the pool,” the pumped up lounge lizard said. “You can’t hear the music outside of the estate though and no cops have ever been called – if a neighbor has complained it will probably have been about the amount of cars out in the street.” And, the party doesn’t stop when the Biebs is home – but it becomes decidedly more PG! “It just depends on what kind of mood Justin is in on the night. You gotta remember, Justin’s 19 and what are other kids his age doing?” Among the core group of permanent “house guests”– who all live at the $6.5 million estate in a suburb of Los Angeles for free – are rappers King Kevi (a.k.a. Kevin Pederson) and Lil Twist, but the source insists this new breed of Rat Pack aren’t mooching off the Cheez Whiz Kid. “Kevi comes from a wealthy family and is in talks with record labels – and the other guys are worth at least $5 million each,” the insider divulged. We can’t vouch for everything — but we’ve definitely heard that Bieber is a fan of non-disclosure agreements so we know at least some of this is likely true. Does any of this surprise you? WENN

Too Late? Scottsboro Boys To Be Pardoned Posthumously After Spending Years Locked Up, Accused Of Sex Assault On Shady White Girls

Alabama is attempting to revise it’s racist past by taking steps to posthumously pardon one of the most publicized cases of false imprisonment in black history . Via ABCNews reports : Nine black teens who were wrongly convicted of rape more than 80 years ago are set to receive posthumous pardons. The nine “Scottsboro Boys” were accused of gang rape by two white women in Alabama in the early 1930s. With the exception of one boy, all were convicted by white juries and sentenced to death row. The allegations, however, were false. While they were eventually freed without executions, the boys languished for years in prison, missing out on opportunities for education, jobs, marriage and life in general. The last of the men passed away nearly 25 years ago. Now, Alabama is trying to right past racial injustices and improve its reputation. The state House and Senate have voted unanimously in favor of a bill to posthumously pardon the teens. Governor Robert Bentley is expected to sign it. While civil rights organizations like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) lauded the decision, they said that racial tensions still exist, and that there is more work to do. NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous pointed out to the Associated Press that Alabama is currently involved in a Supreme Court case involving whether a section of the Voting Rights Act should be upheld. Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 requires places with a history of discrimination, including Shelby County, Alabama, to obtain preclearance before altering their voting laws. Shelby County says the law unfairly punishes them for past injustices, but voter rights groups, including the NAACP and a group of Latino advocacy organizations, say voters who don’t speak English as a first language continue to be discriminated against, and that voter-roll purges unfairly target minorities. “Unfortunately,” Jealous told the AP, “Alabama still needs to consider its present.” This is one of the most infamous cases in AMERICA’s shady history — forget about Alabama. Of the nine men falsely accused of forcing sex on two train-riding skanky white girls (who were definitely spreading legs for white men) some of them were not even physically able to have sex at all! They had their names torn down and the shame of being attached to this case. It’s great that they’re being pardoned now — but Alabama owes them and their families more than just a pardon. And we agree with Ben Jealous — there are plenty of steps the state needs to take to address racism HERE and NOW! AP

Prison Inmates Rescue Three Boys From Drowning

Three prison inmates were assigned to clean up a park near the Yacolt, Wash., minimum security correctional facility where they’re incarcerated last week. They ended up saving three young lives. During their work-release community service, Nelson Pettis, 37, Larry Bohn, 29, and Jon Fowler, 29, heard children’s screams coming from a nearby creek. Rushing to the water’s edge, the prisoners saw three young boys struggling to keep their heads above water. The children’s small canoe had capsized. The boys struggled to stay above water in the cold, 25-mph current rushing towards the Washington River, and the inmates knew they were in trouble. “It was raging pretty fast,” Pettis told KPTV news. “They were really scared.” He and Bohn didn’t think twice, leaping into the water to grab the boys, later identified as brothers ages 8, 10 and 16, and carrying them to a small island. There, they awaited emergency rescue. “They kept telling us, ‘Thank you, thank you,'” Bohn told reporters, adding that the three kids were “really scared” but very grateful and will be alright. “I think we did something that any good person would do. You see three helpless kids in a river, you help. That’s what you do,” said Fowler. “Just cause we’re incarcerated, doesn’t mean we’re bad people. We made some bad choices in our lives, but we’re still, we’re just like everybody else.” “We’re just paying our debt for what we did wrong.”

Question Of The Day: Do Women Curse More Than Men?

WTF type of bulls#!t-a$$ question is that?!?! Girls At A Catholic High School Asked To Sign A “No Cursing” Pledge Via NYDailyNews A Catholic high school is under fire for ordering its girls to sign up to a “no-cursing” pledge – but not requesting the same of its male students. Queen of Peace High School, in North Arlington New Jersey, has been accused of sexism and having double-standards for the rule that was introduced by administrators last week. Student Dana Cotter, 16, said that although she believed the idea behind the pledge was sound, she criticized it for not involving all students. But the move has been defended by its Principal Larry Lavallee, who said girls at the institution had “the worst language.” Lori Flynn, the teacher who organized the pledge, also said school officials just wanted “ladies to act like ladies.” She added that, although boys were not specifically asked to participate, they were asked to tone down their cursing when female students were around, reports NBC10 Philadelphia. It was hoped that the improved behavior of the girls would have a positive influence on the boys, she said. Do you think this was a good idea or is the school just further perpetuating a double-standard of behavior?? Images via tumblr
