Happy Mother’s Day From Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift

Above the Buzz rounds up the best pop songs praising mom. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber and his mother Patricia Mallette Photo: Rick Diamond/ Getty Images Mother’s Day is just around the bend — Sunday, to be exact. If you’re reading this and that’s news to you, you might want to order your mama some flowers and read on for some awesome mixtape song selections courtesy of Above the Buzz . Pop music has had a longstanding tradition of cranking out tunes that pay homage to the most important woman in everyone’s life: mommy dearest. How could you not look to mom for musical inspiration? She loves you unconditionally, pushes you to be your best, is an awesome shopping buddy and, at one point, let you make that terrible decision of rocking blond highlights back in high school when you really had no business being blonde. Basically, she’s your friend until the end. So, hit record on your boom box and collect these tunes to let mom know how much you love and appreciate her. (And, yes, I am writing this column from a random Mother’s Day in the ’90s when people still recorded mixtapes off boom boxes.) In 1999, the Backstreet Boys released a sappy ballad titled “The Perfect Fan.” With touches of gospel on the track, the sentiment thanking their moms for always being supportive reaches it crescendo when the fivesome declare, “I wanna thank you for what you’ve done/ In hopes I can give back to you/ And be the perfect son.” Writing a song about your mom, boys, is certainly a good start. Years before BSB dropped their mommy ode, Boyz II Men released “A Song for Mama” in 1997. In the deeply emotional ballad produced and written by Babyface, the guys praise their mamas for showing them the right thing to do. “You’re always there for me/ Have always been around for me, even when I was bad/ You showed me right from my wrong/ Yes, you did,” they sing. And, we swooned. That same year, the Spice Girls released “Mama.” Lyrically, it is a bit different from the tracks the boys released. The song is about the girls’ growing relationships with their moms, who went from their biggest enemy when they were teens to being their best friends as adults. The ladies sing, “Back then, I didn’t know why/ Why you were misunderstood/ So now I see through your eyes/ All that you did was love.” An equally touching ode from Christina Aguilera , “Oh Mother,” delves into a more serious topics than those other tracks. Released in 2006, the song reflects on her mother’s abusive relationship with her father. The song is incredibly personal, relaying some details about watching her mother get abused. But, in the end, she wants her mom to know this: “So mother, I thank you/ For all that you’ve done and still do/ You got me, I got you/ Together, we always pull through.” On the other side of the emotional mom rollercoaster is Taylor Swift ‘s “The Best Day,” which she dropped in 2008. The track is a mid-tempo jam about all the awesome things her mom does to make her feel better when she’s low and all the things her mom taught her. “I know you were on my side even when I was wrong/ And I love you for giving me your eyes/ For staying back and watching me shine/ And I didn’t know if you knew, so I’m takin’ this chance to say/ That I had the best day with you today,” she sings. You said it for all of us, girl! With a new Mother’s Day upon us, Justin Bieber is getting in on the action with his new track “Turn to You.” Given the tradition he’s following in, it’s a nice sentiment from a boy who truly loves his mom. And, there’s nothing more adorable than a pop star who knows where it’s at. Because we know where it’s at, we have this final message: Happy Mother’s Day, mom! All these songs say it all and so much more. You rock! Now, go tell your mom how you feel about her — she deserves it. What’s your favorite track showing love for mom? Share your pick below!

Adam Yauch’s Beastie Boys Videos: A History

MTV News looks at the best Beastie clips of all time, including ones directed by MCA (or Nathanial Hornblower) himself. By Gil Kaufman Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Photo: Ron Galella/ Getty Images There are bands that make great music and others that make great videos. But there is a rare breed of act that makes both. Since their very earliest days, the Beastie Boys were in that latter category. From the frat-boy fun of 1986’s “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)” video to what will likely be their final clip, a 2011 all-star clip to promote the Hot Sauce Committee Part Two single “Make Some Noise” and the “Fight for Your Right Revisited” film, the B-Boys not only had fun, they made sure we did too. With the passing of Adam Yauch (a.k.a. MCA) on Friday (May 4) at age 47 following a three-year battle with cancer , MTV News takes a look back at some of the trio’s most beloved clips, as well as the ones directed by Yauch under his Swedish pseudonym, Nathaniel Hornblower. “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)” This is the one that launched MCA, Ad-Rock and Mike D to global stardom. The party anthem was accompanied by a very literal video in which, well, the fellas throw a crazy party and trash the joint. “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” Young, wild and free, the Boys lampoon heavy-metal knuckleheads after a cheesy club promoter turns them away when they show up with their “instruments” (i.e. scratch-ready records). Wearing metal wigs and Poison-worthy spandex, they soon strip down to their streetwise uniforms and start raising some hell and engaging in the kinds of shenanigans they became infamous for when they hit the road with Madonna on their first major tour. It’s silly and amateurish, but then again, so were they at that time. “Hey Ladies” In one of the first of many clips in which the trio would slip into a number of alternate personas, this video from Paul’s Boutique had it all: sushi chefs, eight-track tapes, disco dancing, human clocks, cowbells, pimp suits, a mariachi band, fake mustaches and goatees, scuba diving, Afro wigs, “Saturday Night Fever” homages, a “Free James Brown” subliminal message, a 1970s Vincent Van Gogh and the original appearance of booty pads. “So What Cha Want” They weren’t all high-concept. Yauch was behind the lens for this 1992 mind-tripper, which simply tracked the three MCs as they flexed and rapped their way through a forest tricked out with negative-image special effects intercut with ominous nature footage. “Sabotage” The ne plus ultra of Beastie videos, this ’70s cop-show spoof directed by pal Spike Jonze is one of the funniest and most creative clips in music-video history. Action-packed and simultaneously utterly ridiculous, the mini-movie finds the Boys cruising the streets of San Francisco in a late model sedan while chasing the bad buys in an increasingly ridiculous series of wigs, mustaches and costumes. Yauch appears as the dapper Sir Stewart Wallace, as well as Nathan Wind playing Cochese. Filmed by Hornblower, this classic spoof of Japanese monster movies from 1998’s Hello Nasty is again awash in absurd costumes as Yauch makes popping, locking killer robots look expensively cheap. Between shots of the haz-mat-suit-wearing MCs posing and rapping in Tokyo subway stations and streets into a fish-eye lens, we see their scientific alter egos trying to save their giant robot from getting short-circuited by a sea creature. “Body Movin’ ” Yauch/Hornblower went highbrow with the video for this Hello Nasty single, which was inspired by the beloved cult 1968 Italian cat-burglar caper “Danger Diabolik.” Once again, Yauch dressed himself and his partners-in-crime in absurd outfits and had them act out everything from laughable sword fights (complete with a bloody Yauch beheading) to catapult escapes, helicopter vs. car chase scenes and midair parachute wrestling matches. “Ch-Check It Out” Not as well known, this kinetic Hornblower clip from 2004 is another mix of aggressive into-the-camera rapping, with bits of everything from “Star Trek” homages and swamp airboat chases to the Boys in old-lady drag throwing fish across the avenue at their male counterparts.

Adam Yauch: Remembering A Beastie Boy’s Life And Career

MTV News takes a look back at Yauch’s music, spirituality and impact during hour-long special. By Kara Warner Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch Photo: Fred Duval/ Getty Images With the world still reeling from the news of Adam Yauch’s death on Friday (May 4), MTV News took to the airwaves with the one-hour special “Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy” to honor the life and impact of the influential artist, one of the founding members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted rap trio. MTV’s own Sway Calloway began the tribute by reading celebrity reactions to Yauch’s death from artists including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Travis Barker, Weezer and Jack Black, all of whom expressed feelings of sadness and respect for the influential MC. “Adam Yauch brought a lot of positivity into the world, and I think it’s obvious to anyone how big of an influence the Beastie Boys were on me and so many others,” Em said in a statement to MTV News. “They are trailblazers and pioneers, and Adam will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, Mike D., and Ad-Rock.” The tribute then turned toward Yauch’s indelible impact on the music industry, beginning with a look at one of the Beastie Boys’ most famous and critically acclaimed music videos, “Sabotage,” directed by Spike Jonze, followed by the group’s festive performance of “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)” on MTV’s New Year’s Eve show in 1986. Other clips featured in the 60-minute special included their 1998 VMA performance of “Intergalactic,” the year the group took home the Video Vanguard award, as well as more of their iconic music videos, including “Hey Ladies.” Sway touched on the evolution of Yauch’s spirituality throughout his career, which led to his founding of the Tibetan Freedom Concert, the first of which drew influential acts like the Smashing Pumpkins, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine. We dug through our archives to find the Beastie Boys’ performance of “Root Down” at the 1996 concert in San Francisco, followed by their star-studded, 2011 VMA-nominated music video “Make Some Noise,” which earned Yauch an award for Best Director. The tribute closed with a few more celeb tribute tweets and the Boys’ 2004 MTV Movie Awards performance of “Ch-Check It Out.” Share your memories of Adam on Twitter using the hashtag #RIPMCA. Jonas Brothers Part Ways With Longtime Label Hollywood Records

‘We’re all looking forward to this next chapter,’ Nick Jonas says of the shakeup. By Jocelyn Vena Jonas Brothers Photo: El Universal The Jonas Brothers have been tweeting with the hashtag #JB2012 lately. And it seems that it now has a whole new meaning as the brothers enter the next chapter of their careers. Nick, Joe and Kevin have confirmed they are leaving Hollywood Records, the Disney-owned label they’ve been with since 2007. In addition to parting ways with Hollywood, the band of brothers has confirmed that they also bought the rights to their master recordings, merchandising and publishing. In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter , Nick opened up about the decision to push forward with their music career without the assistance of the label backing them. “This was a decision that we made as a group,” he said. “Naturally, as with any partnership, when you do part ways, there is emotion tied to it. We’ve been blessed to have a lot of success with Hollywood and with Disney, but speaking on behalf of my brothers and our team, we’re all looking forward to this next chapter. We’re ready for that next step as a group, and being able to take our work with us was so important.” As of now, the band is label-less, their manager Johnny Wright confirmed. He added that the guys, who are currently working on their next album, will seek a different type of deal if or when they sign with another company. Their next deal, he added, will give them more control. “This will allow them to chart their own destiny,” he said, adding that given their relationship with Disney had pretty much come to the end of the road, this decision came at the perfect time. “The industry and distribution channels are changing so rapidly, we don’t even know what it means anymore to put out a record,” he explained. “If we wanted to take another deal with a major, it would be different than what we entered into when we signed with Hollywood. We don’t have to become just an artist to the label, we could be a partner or do it ourselves and then come back later on. There’s no plan here — the plan is whatever we decide to make it.” The guys are now focused on the future, which as a group includes their next album . Individually, Nick will wrap up his run in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” on Broadway this July , and Kevin, with his wife Danielle, will premiere their E! reality show this August . Joe is coming off of a solo album he dropped last year. “In these past three years, my brothers and I have not released a record, but we’ve really come into our own as men,” Nick explained. “And we’ve also lived life, which is an important part to making a record. … I’ve got a studio set-up in my apartment in New York where we can all put down our ideas. It’s a really liberating feeling to just be able to create and write whatever is on our hearts.” The newly free agents’ next album, the follow-up to 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times, should drop by the end of 2012 or early 2013 . The Wanted Move On From Christina And Take Aim At Britney Spears

Siva Kaneswaran says the band was not allowed to look at Britney Spears backstage at a Manchester show. By Gil Kaufman The Wanted Photo: Getty Images If you’re having trouble keeping the latest wave of British boy bands straight, just remember this one simple trick: The Wanted are the ones who talk tons of smack. After tearing into “The Voice” coach
Christina Aguilera by calling her a “total bitch” last week, and then kind of apologizing
, the boys turned their verbal cannons on another ex-Mouseketeer. Sitting down for another radio interview in New York on Monday (their people should really consider keeping the boys off N.Y. radio, just sayin’), the lads opened up about a rather unpleasant interaction with Britney Spears’ security team in November. They said they were personally invited to open Brit’s show in Manchester and by all accounts the hook-up went swimmingly, with a cute photo op and a follow-up tweet from Spears in which she wrote, “So the boys from @thewantedmusic came to my Wembley show & we hung out backstage! Love them!” But member Tom Parker revealed that, “We signed a confidentiality thing that we should never say anything about what happened, but let’s tell it anyway.” That prompted Siva Kaneswaran to open up the legal Pandora’s box and spill, “I was in the hallway with my tour manager. Basically we were looking with a laptop, trying to get WiFi … facing the middle of the hallway. [Britney’s] bouncers came down with her and told us to face the wall.” “As Miss Spears is walking through,” added Parker. “We’re like come on!” But, since they are nice boys, Kaneswaran said, “We turned around and I faced a wall for about 10 seconds until she got really far away.” They didn’t wait long to walk this one back a bit, though. Jay McGuiness quickly followed-up with another patented Wanted semi-apology, explaining, “But honestly when we actually met her person to person, she was so down to earth. You can tell she’s a total Southern girl and Nathan [Sykes], when he was a kid, won a singing competition. She was one of the judges or something. And she gave him a kiss, it was one of his first kisses as a kid. So he got to meet her again and support her.” Last week, when MTV News’ Sway spoke to the boys they were in a similarly feisty mood, with Parker claiming that Justin Bieber had smacked Kaneswaran in his crown jewels when they performed with the “Boyfriend” singer. “He [Kaneswaran] came up to me in the dressing room and said, ‘Why’s he picking on me?'” Parker joked. As for Spears, at the time, Sykes said, “She’s lovely as well. We haven’t really met people who aren’t very nice and Britney was just very, very nice. She was kind of what you’d expect her to be, very happy and American.” And, Parker said, even though her bodyguards were kind of scary, Britney, he said, had “lovely teeth.” Related Videos MTV First: The Wanted Exclusive: Follow The Wanted Around NYC! Big Time Rush Declare Themselves ‘Best Boy Band Of All Time’

But, Battle of the Boy Bands competitors also show love for ‘NSYNC. By John Mitchell Big Time Rush Photo: MTV News The competition continues to heat up in MTV News’ Battle of the Boy Bands . Some huge favorites are falling behind as some unexpected fans come out of the woodwork to vote for their favorite groups. At this point in the competition, Big Time Rush are well ahead of ’90s R&B hitmakers All For One in their showdown, but anything can happen right up until voting closes today (April 26) at noon. So, the boys are here to tell you why you should vote for them and keep them in the race for the boy-band crown. Highest Chart Achievement The band, which was created for its namesake Nickelodeon show, enjoyed its strongest sales week ever when its November 2011 album, Elevate, debuted with over 70,000 in sales. However, their debut, 2010’s BTR , while selling fewer copies (67,000) in its opening frame, actually enjoyed a higher chart position, debuting at an astounding #3 to Elevate ‘s #12. Standout Video For sheer Backstreet nostalgia alone, it’s got to be “Worldwide.” The clip features the guys — Kendall Schmidt, James Maslow, Carlos Pena Jr. and Logan Henderson — in all-white outfits, crooning their hearts out ballad-style, while hanging out in an airline terminal. The homage to the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way” is undeniable — and we mean that as the highest of compliments. Defining Tune Well, that depends who you ask. “Boyfriend,” the band’s first official single sent to U.S. radio, remains their strongest-performing track on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #72. However, the band and its fans certainly have a connection with “Music Sounds Better With U,” which was co-written by the band and Ryan Tedder — yes, that Ryan Tedder, a hitmaker in his own right with OneRepublic, who is currently one of the hottest songwriters in the world after his work with Beyonc

‘The Voice’ Results: Cheesa And Mathai Sent Packing

America moves Tony Lucca and Jamar Rogers forward, while the judges save Katrina Parker and Juliet Simms. By John Mitchell Cheesa on “The Voice” Photo: NBC Universal On Monday’s episode of “The Voice,” coaches Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine instantly eliminated James Massone and fan favorite Pip after both gave middling performances. On Tuesday night (April 24), after America’s vote saved former Mouseketeer Tony Lucca and Jamar Rogers, Katrina Parker and Mathai from Team Adam and Cheesa and Juliet Simms from Team Cee Lo were given one last shot to stay in the competition by performing to earn their respective judge’s lone save. Florence and the Machine opened the show in typically ethereal fashion with their new single “Breath of Life” from the “Snow White and the Huntsmen” soundtrack. Surrounded by ballerinas in flowing dresses and backed by Team Cee Lo, Florence Welch’s belting had coach Christina Aguilera nodding along in her chair. Up first in Tuesday’s sing-off was Team Adam’s Mathai, who changed up her quirky indie style radically to show off a different side of her voice by going country with Carrie Underwood’s “Cowboy Casanova.” Her teammate Katrina Parker followed and delivered yet another full-voiced performance, this time of Pink’s “Perfect. Blake called Katrina “the best singer on [Adam’s] team,” and Christina agreed, complimenting her song choice and saying that of anyone on Adam’s team, Katrina was the singer Xtina was most interested in hearing original material from. Adam had a tough time with the decision. A really, really tough time. As in, he went on and on about how both singers had come into their own late in the competition and how they had surprised him throughout. He was effusive with praise and rambled on like he was trying to delay the inevitable. Finally, he went with the same big voice he saved last time around. Adam’s Save: Katrina Parker Team Cee Lo’s last-chance singers took the stage next. Cheesa’s faithful take on “Already Gone” earned a pretty tough technical critique from all the judges, with each commenting that she was under pitch for the entire performance until the final note, which she nailed. They went easier on Simms, who sang Natalie Imbruglia’s “Torn,” but Christina still was vocal about wanting more from the singer. Cee Lo was as complimentary as Adam but far more decisive. Cee Lo’s Save: Juliet Simms Moving on to the Semifinals Team Christina
