Sons Of Sylvia: From ‘Next Great American Band’ To ‘American Idol’

The trio, previously known as the Clark Brothers, have opened for Carrie Underwood on her current tour. By Gil Kaufman Sons of Silvia’s Ashley Clark performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: Fox Shakira, Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum and Sons of Sylvia — wait, who? Millions of Americans could be forgiven if they weren’t familiar with the handsome brotherly trio who performed on Wednesday night’s (April 28) “American Idol” elimination show, where Siobhan Magnus got the boot. But if you’ve been paying attention for the past three years, you might just recognize brothers Ashley, Austin and Adam Clark. They’ve been opening for good pal Carrie Underwood — who helicoptered in from her tour just to introduce them on “Idol” — on her current tour, and they played backup in her touring band right after she won season four. They were also the winners of the first and only season of “Idol” spinoff “The Next Great American Band,” back when they were known as the Clark Brothers. After years of trying to make it in Nashville and Hollywood, that win landed them a contract with Interscope Records and a management deal with 19 Entertainment, which explains how they landed on “Idol.” Kind of. “We never tried out for ‘Idol,’ but we’ve been watching it all the time and … man, it’s like a dream, we were so pumped,” said guitarist Austin, 26, the youngest of the trio, who are three of 11 kids born to their preacher parents. (Yes, their mom’s name is Sylvia.) The band of brothers performed their debut single, “Love Left to Lose,” from their just-released debut album, Revelation, on “Idol,” and Austin said the experience was a mind-blower. The tune mixed straightforward radio rock with country touches, including fiddle, mandolin and rocked-out resonator guitar over a thudding backbeat. The swirly, urgent rock ballad was co-written and produced by the boys’ second cousin and good pal, OneRepublic hitmaker Ryan Tedder, who gave it his signature wide-open, yearning sound and instantly alluring hooks. “I can’t believe it’s happening,” Austin said of their rocket ride to fame after years of hard work. “It feels like a childhood dream as far as: start a band, get a record out and being on tour. All of this is actually happening. I wake up every day baffled.” Though they’ve had reality-show experience, Austin said pre-taping their “Idol” performance was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. “It’s surreal up there,” he said. “You see the big ‘American Idol’ logo, things are spinning around. [I was thinking] ‘I’ve watched the show and now it’s my turn.’ You’re just thinking about not screwing up.” Though they didn’t have a chance to meet any of this year’s finalists — and haven’t really had time to watch the show since they’re busy on the road with Underwood — Austin said it was probably a good thing the judges weren’t around when they visited the set. “If Simon would have critiqued us, we would have been nervous!” What did you think of Sons of Sylvia’s performance? ‘Glee’ Stars Say There’s ‘Secret Stuff’ In Madonna Episode

‘It’s a piece of television history,’ Kevin McHale says. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Photo: FOX In Tuesday night’s (April 20) “Power of Madonna” episode of “Glee,” fans will finally get the chance to see how the Glee club puts their own stamp on the queen of pop’s classic tunes. The cast promised that they’ve done the Material Girl justice. “It’s a piece of television history,” Kevin McHale gushed to MTV News. ” Jane Lynch doing the ‘Vogue’ video … it’s frame-by-frame perfect to the original. Throughout the entire episode it’s just Madonna all the time — like, there’s secret stuff in the background.” And while Lynch covered “Vogue”-era Madonna, McHale said there’s not a version of Madge not accounted for in the episode. “It’s amazing how they fit all that into one hour,” he added. “It’s kind of exhausting.” Fellow Gleek Chris Colfer said that if you enoyed “Vogue,” just wait for their take on “Like a Prayer.” “I had no idea [a choir was] even going to be there until the day of rehearsals and it was like, ‘Oh, there’s a big choir behind us, look at that!’ ” Colfer laughed about the number, adding, “That [moment] was kind of special for all of us.” Madonna herself approves of the episode, which is all about female empowerment , and evem said her daughter Lourdes loved it as well. “I thought the Madonna episode of ‘Glee’ was brilliant on every level. The dialogue and the entire script was genius,” she said in a statement to UsWeekly.com . “I completely appreciated the layers of irony, especially when all those macho boys sang ‘What It Feels Like For a Girl.’ I also loved the fantastic performances of ‘Vogue,’ ‘Express Yourself’ and all the messages about the boys being respectful to girls. “The entire cast was amazing. They’re all so talented. I especially loved Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) and Kurt Hummel’s (Chris Colfer) characters. [Show creator] Ryan Murphy did a great job bringing all these elements together. [Daughter] Lola loved the show too. I wish I went to a high school like that. … If only.” What Madonna song are you most looking forward to seeing in the episode? Tell us in the comments below! ‘Glee’ Stars Get Help From Madonna, But What About Adam Lambert?

‘I’ve only heard rumors,’ Chris Colfer says of a possible Lambert appearance. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kelly Marino The cast of “Glee” in the “Power of Madonna” episode Photo: FOX In the “Power of Madonna” episode of “Glee” set to air on Tuesday night (April 20), fans will get more than just remixes of favorite pop tunes. The Material Girl herself praised how Mr. Schuester will use her songs to teach his students a little more about themselves, and possibly change the way they interact with each other. Jenna Ushkowitz said that her character Tina will use Madge’s girl-power pop to clear up her relationship with pal and love interest Artie Abrams (played by Kevin McHale). “Well, definitely in the Madonna episode you’ll see [Tina and Artie] interact more, and it’s all about women’s empowerment,” she explained to MTV News at the GLAAD Media Awards in L.A. on Saturday. “And how the boys are degrading and disrespectful. Tina will come back and fight back pretty hard, and then the writers have graciously given us the chance to live out our relationship for a while.” Chris Colfer (who plays Kurt Hummel on the show) didn’t shed too much light on the Madonna episode, but did weigh in on the rumors that Adam Lambert may bring his glam-rock voice and style to the show. “He’s a sweetheart,” he said. “I’ve only heard rumors, but I’ve never heard anything discussed with the writers or any of that.” But Colfer was able to speculate a bit on what’s next for his openly gay character. “There’s lots of good Kurt and Burt [Kurt’s father] story lines coming up, and I think next season he’s getting a love interest, so that should be interesting, I believe,” he said. “They don’t tell me anything, but I believe he’ll be a student — but that’s all I really know.” Do you think Adam Lambert should stop by “Glee?” Tell us in the comments! Material Girl thinks one character in particular is ‘very cute.’ By Jocelyn Vena Madonna Photo: James Devaney/ WireImage Not only is Madonna excited to have her songs used in next week’s “Power of Madonna” episode of “Glee,” she is also apparently hot for teacher. “I think Mr. Schuester is very cute,” Madonna said in a statement, referring to Matthew Morrison, who plays the glee-club instructor on the hit Fox show. “And I’m glad he’s doing such a good job empowering all the girls.” In the episode, according to Fox, Mr. Schuester assigns the kids to sing Madonna songs because he thinks the girls have been mistreated by the boys. He wants them all to benefit from the girl-power messages in tracks like “Express Yourself.” “Like a Prayer,” “Like a Virgin” and “4 Minutes” are also covered in the episode. Following this Tuesday’s spring premiere of “Glee,” Fox aired a shot-by-shot reenactment of Madge’s iconic “Vogue” clip, starring Sue Sylvester (played by Jane Lynch), Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Kurt (Chris Colfer). Lynch told MTV News about how empowering she found it to cover Madonna. “Oh, yeah, the cone bra, the Gaultier bra, I wear that in one scene. And it’s the most powerful I’ve ever felt in my life,” she dished. “Well, you know what, I wore the cone bra with the track suit, so it worked. It was a win, win.” Which song are you most looking forward to seeing in the “Glee” Madonna episode? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos It’s The Return Of ‘Glee’! Justin Bieber Recalls Hanging In The Oval Office With President Obama

‘No one really gets to go in there,’ pop star tells MTV News of his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tim Kash Justin Bieber performs at the White House Photo: Chip Somodevilla/ Getty Images In his short career, Justin Bieber has already performed for President Obama twice. He first took the stage in the nation’s capital in December, when he performed along with mentor Usher for “Christmas in Washington.” And just last week Bieber took part in the annual Easter Egg Roll . Surprisingly, Bieber is pretty laid-back about the whole experience. “Basically, we went to Washington. We did the thing for the president,” he told MTV News, adding that he called Obama “Mr. President.” While Bieber is Canadian, he was just as honored as any American would be to perform at the White House. “It was great,” Bieber said. “[Obama] was really cool, really nice, and I was just happy to be there.” As it turned out, Obama’s daughters, Sasha and Malia, really love the 16-year-old pop star. “We met them, took pictures with them, took pictures with the first lady,” Bieber recalled. While he has it down now, Obama didn’t always know the correct pronunciation of Bieber’s last name. “The first time I met him was a couple months back,” Bieber said. “And when he introduced me, he said, ‘Justin Bye-ber.’ ” Though, Bieber wasn’t really bothered: “Whatever.” As cool as it is to perform in D.C., Bieber used his celebrity status to do one more thing not many people get a chance to do. “I got to hang out with him in the Oval Office, which is pretty crazy, because no one really gets to go in there,” he said. “But it was pretty incredible. I got pictures with him.” What would you say to Obama if you got the chance to meet him? Let us know in the comments below! Drake Says He’s On A Remix Of Lil Wayne’s ‘I’m Single’

‘I tried to slither my way on that record,’ Young Money MC tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes and Sway Calloway Drake and Lil Wayne Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Holla at the champs — your boys have finally decided to get it in on Twitter, so shout us out at @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc . Let’s have dialogue and check for exclusives. Big up to Wiz Khalifa’s army, the Taylor Gang, who have been hitting us up about the mixtape Kush and Orange Juice by @RealWizKhalifa . We got something all the Taylors will be interested in real soon. Now, down to business — we recently brought you clarified word that Lil Wayne appears on Drake’s June 15 LP Thank Me Later via the track “Miss Me.” But there’s more Wayne and Drake in the can. Drizzy sings on a remix of Wayne’s No Ceilings jam “I’m Single.” Drake was so enamored with the record, he wanted to get on the hook. That version is nestled in the Young Money vaults. “I love that song,” Drake told us earlier this week. “I love that song. 40 produced that record for Wayne. I did that a while ago. I love that song. It’s one of those songs I wish was my song. I tried to slither my way on that record. I called Tez like, ‘Tez, let me get on that hook.’ There’s a version with me on it. I don’t know if it’s gonna get out there. Music is someone else’s creation. Once it’s done, it’s hard to say I wanna be a part of it. But me and Wayne, I get excited when Wayne wants to be on one of my songs. Musically we share that. We like doing songs together. I don’t think it’s a bad thing when we do songs together. … So there’s definitely a version with me on it. But that song is amazing on its own.” As for “Miss Me,” Drake said it’s “straightforward.” “It’s a pretty straightforward [song],” Drake said. “It’s a song about being away from what you love and hoping that when you’re gone, doing you, somebody out there misses you. It goes for Wayne in his situation and it goes for me in my situation, ’cause I’m on the road for I don’t how long right now.” The video for the version of “I”m Single” that appears on No Ceilings debuts this Sunday on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Sunday” countdown and on MTV Jams as the Jam of the Week. “The thing with Wayne, if you don’t get a chance to see how hard he worked on the record and the wit and pizazz he had with it, he wants to give you that same feeling the first time you hear it,” said DJ Scoob Doo, who directed the video. “Which he does audio-wise, but him performing it for you in the studio is really what it’s about, as far as this video.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . OneRepublic Are ‘Freaked Out’ By U2 And Bon Jovi Warm-Up Gigs

‘I have a little bit of Bieber fever … but not as much as Bono fever,’ frontman Ryan Tedder tells MTV News. By James Montgomery OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder Photo: MTV News If you’re a hitmaking machine like OneRepublic, you generally don’t agree to open for anyone. But when two of the biggest acts in the business extend offers to serve as curtain-jerkers, you have to at least think twice. And say yes, apparently. Because this summer, OneRepublic will open for both Bon Jovi and U2, and one of those gigs will see them perform with Jon Bon at the brand-new Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey, a slot akin to opening for the Pope at the Vatican. “We just got asked to open up the first musical performance at the new Meadowlands Stadium, in New Jersey … so that’s going to be crazy,” OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder laughed. “Something like 70-80,000 New Jerseyans, opening up for Bon Jovi in his home state. So we have to do something special for that. I’m not sure just what, but it’ll be something. Maybe we’ll work a Bruce Springsteen cover into the set.” And since they’ve agreed to two high-profile tours, the guys in OneRepublic know they have to step up their game. A Boss cover just isn’t going to cut it. “It’s kind of like the Olympics: You have America, and then you have Bermuda. They both compete on the same stage, at the same level; one’s just got a little bit of catching up to do,” Tedder said. “So I’d like to think of us as somewhere between Bermuda and, maybe Switzerland, and Bon Jovi’s probably America. Or maybe Canada at the Winter Olympics.” And while the gigs with Bon Jovi are certainly going to be huge, it’s their opening slot on U2’s upcoming tour that really had Tedder and the boys excited — so much so that the mere thought of meeting Bono has them morphing into squealing pre-teens. “The U2 stuff, I mean, that’s kind of why we started a band. … I’m still kind of freaked out about it. And I’m not a guy who takes a bunch of pictures and video, but I’m going to be filming the whole thing. [We’ll be like] one of those idiots, backstage, Twittering our rosy little fingers off,” he laughed. “For all those kids out there, it’s kind of like how you feel about Bieber. Bono is Bieber to us. I have a little bit of Bieber fever too, but not as much as Bono fever. I have a full-on rash. A Bono-sized rash.” Will you check out OneRepublic’s warm-up gigs for Bon Jovi or U2?
