Soccer Academies’ Ugly Side

The new cover story in The New York Times Magazine, “How a Soccer Star is Made,” is a long and detailed article about the intense training that has grown up around youth soccer academies in Europe and what American soccer organizations can learn from their way of doing what has become very big business. [Dutch soccer team] Ajax puts young players into a competitive caldron, a culture of constant improvement in which they either survive and advance or are discarded. It is not what most would regard as a child-friendly environment, but it is one that sorts out the real prodigies — those capable of playing at an elite international level — from the merely gifted. From a very early age — sometimes even before a boy has even started school — these players’ careers are contracted, licensed and traded — or in the typical parlance of the sport, bought and sold. As the New York Times reports: No one pretends that its business is other than what it is. “We sold Wesley Sneijder for a ridiculous amount of money,” [trainer Olav] Versloot said. “We can go on for years based on what he was sold for.” … [British team] Fulham, like Ajax, is often a seller of talent. It recently sold a 20-year-old to Manchester United for seven million pounds, or more than $10 million. “It’s a little ugly talking about the financial terms,” [Coach Huw] Jennings said. “I don’t like to do it. It feels not too far off from the slave trade.” With an estimated 10,000 boys being trained by clubs in England alone, the demand for young players — in quantity, at least — may be greater than the number of interested UK youth. Jennings said that his scouts, in response to the “unsuitability of the indigenous population of Britain” — children who are too sedentary and spend their time with video games — were increasingly focused “on the inner city of London, among Africans, Eastern Europeans and Caribbeans.” Even Drogba’s injury, which may keep him out of the World Cup, won’t stop poor boys who grew up playing soccer in dirt fields from wanting to be like him. For an upcoming episode of Vanguard, “Soccer’s Lost Boys,” I travelled to Africa and Europe to examine the dark side of this growing network of recruitment, and to track down the ambitious young African players whose dreams make them an easy target for shady scouts. Unlike European academies where players pay very little to train, these kids’ families are bilked of their meager savings with promises that their boys could be the next Drogba. What happens after that—boys abandoned along the way, often without any money, papers, or ability to return home to their families—is the tragic, ugly underbelly of the beautiful game. UK Boys’ Conviction in Rape Case Sets Off Storm

(May 25) — The jury in London has spoken, but so have the critics. And the consensus seems to be that two boys — ages 10 and 11 — and the 8-year-old girl they were found guilty of trying to rape had no place being in a criminal court in the first place. “Astonishing and depressing” and “absurd” and “we are making demons of our children” were some of the words used after the Central Criminal Court verdict was handed down Monday. They were accompanied by calls for reform in the prosecution of children in England and Wales, including raising the age of criminal responsibility from 10. In Scotland and Northern Ireland, where the legal systems differ from England's, such cases would go before a children's panel hearing, not a criminal court. Some of the most pointed criticism came from Britain's former director of public prosecutions, Sir Ken MacDonald, currently a professor of law at the London School of Economics. “Put bluntly, we've been witnessing a spectacle that has no place in an intelligent society: very young children do not belong in adult criminal courts. They rarely belong in criminal courts at all,” he wrote in The Times of London. The boys, who were both 10 at the time of the offense, which they denied committing, have been placed on Britain's sex offenders' registry ahead of sentencing. They were cleared of rape in a case in which the girl changed her story under cross-examination, saying she had lied because she was afraid her mother wouldn't give her candy if she knew she'd willingly pulled down her underpants. MacDonald said, “We need to be more mature than to design a system of youth justice around the barbarism of the most extreme cases. 'You show me yours and I'll show you mine' litters every playground in the country. When did we forget?” A lawyer with the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children said children find cross-examination “very difficult to deal with,” a view supported by the U.K.'s Criminal Bar Association. “If an adult is saying to a very young child something didn't happen, the child may be very conflicted by that because it's used to obeying adults,” the association's Paul Mendelle told the BBC. The founder of Kidscape, a charity designed to protect children from bullying, was quoted in media reports as saying it was “absolutely wrong” to try the boys at the Old Bailey court, which takes its name from the street on which it's located. “I think it horribly reflects on our whole system, that a case like this with children should be tried in this way,” founder Michele Elliott said. “It should have been held in camera with no publicity at all. The whole thing is horrific.” The judge refused to dismiss the case when the girl changed her story, saying it was for the jury to decide if she could be trusted. The guilty verdict came down 10 to 2. “Attempted rape is a serious offense and can have long-term effects on the victim,” Felicity Gerry, a criminal lawyer and author of “The Sexual Offenses Handbook,” told The Times. “Decisions to prosecute children are never made lightly. But it is hard to see why the decision was made to pursue [this] prosecution.” Philip Johnston, a columnist for London's Daily Telegraph, called the conviction “astonishing and depressing.” “As a nation, we keep saying we want to stop children growing up too quickly; and yet, when they do childish things we attach adult guilt and morality to them, drag them into court and put them on sex offender registers and hate databases,” he wrote. “We must be mad.” added by: TimALoftis

Children Taunted In Iraq: U.S. Solider Under Investigation (VIDEO)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An Alaska-based soldier is under investigation for a video on his Facebook page that taunts smiling Iraqi children by asking if they're gay, if they engage in certain sex acts and if they would grow up to be terrorists. The two young boys did not appear to understand the questions, which were in English, but smiled at the camera and at times flashed the “thumbs up” gestures during the 30-second clip. Spc. Robert A. Rodriguez, who is based at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, was ordered to remove the video from his site, Army spokesman Maj. Bill Coppernoll said Monday. “The incident is currently under investigation, and the Army will take appropriate action based on the findings of the investigation,” he said. It wasn't immediately clear if Rodriguez shot the video or just posted it, and discovering that will be part of the Army's investigation, Coppernoll said. The video is “disgraceful and clearly inconsistent” with standards expected of every soldier, he said. Raleigh, N.C., television station WRAL first reported the video after another soldier stationed at Fort Wainwright shared it with friends in North Carolina, who took their concerns to the station. WRAL aired part of the video and quoted from Rodriquez's Facebook page before the site was made private. Above the Facebook video posting, which was titled, “future gay terrorist!,” is written, “i got bored in iraq … so I kept myself entertained!” The boys are shown on a dirt road, facing a camera. A voice is heard asking the boys, “Are you going to grow up to be a terrorist?” When the boys show two thumbs up, the voice on the video says, “Yeah. All right. Cool. Yeah, terrorist.” There was no phone listing for Rodriguez in the Fairbanks area. Coppernoll said he did not know the soldier's hometown, but the video of the Facebook page shown on WRAL indicated Rodriguez listed Miami. “For anybody to be so cruel and disrespectful to children of any country but especially a country that we are occupying is really disgraceful and repugnant,” said Tim Stallard, a spokesman for Alaskans Together for Equality. click story link to see video added by: TimALoftis

Slipknot’s Paul Gray Remembered By Shadows Fall, Sepultura, Nonpoint

SF singer Brian Fair recalls Gray as ‘a truly warm soul underneath the evil mask he rocked onstage.’ By Ryan J. Downey Paul Gray Photo: Getty Images Heavy-metal musicians were quick to react to the death of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray , as news spread online in a manner all too familiar to a community still reeling from the recent deaths of legendary singer Ronnie James Dio and Type O Negative frontman Peter Steele . “I’m so crushed to hear about the passing of Paul Gray,” Shadows Fall singer Brian Fair told MTV News. “I had the pleasure of first getting to know him on a press trip to New York City before our tour with Slipknot and Lamb of God in 2005 and then sharing stages and good times with him and the boys around the world. “He was a great musician, an underrated songwriter and a truly warm soul underneath the evil mask he rocked onstage,” he continued. “This is a huge loss to the metal world. He will be missed deeply.” The boys in Nonpoint were on Ozzfest with Slipknot back in 2001, watching the Iowa band blow up as they relentlessly toured behind their 1999 eponymous debut. “I am deeply saddened to hear and read about the death of Paul Gray,” Nonpoint drummer Rob Rivera told MTV News. “Nonpoint had the pleasure of touring with Slipknot during the 2001 Ozzfest, and what we saw from Paul and the rest of Slipknot was a band that gave their all live and put their bodies on the line. To all in Slipknot and Paul’s family, Nonpoint send all our love, condolences and prayers out to you. You will be missed by all your friends and fans around the world. Rest In Peace my metal brother.” Gray was found dead Monday (May 24) in a suburban Iowa hotel room. The cause of death has not been reported as of press time. The band’s most recent studio album, All Hope Is Gone, was released in 2008. The album was mixed by legendary English metal producer Colin Richardson (Machine Head, Fear Factory), whose representative had this to say in a statement: “[Colin] is a true fan to the core and sends his love and condolences to everyone in Slipknot and their camp.” Another band Richardson has worked with, legendary thrashers Sepultura, took to the Internet . “RIP Paul Gray, we’re shocked and very sad,” current members Paulo Pinto Jr., Andreas Kisser, Derrick Green and Jean Dolabella said in a joint statement. “This is another tragic loss for our metal community.” Share your memories of Paul Gray and Slipknot in the comments below. Shanell Joined Young Money Because Lil Wayne ‘Believed’ In Her

With Shut Up and Listen, she’s introducing her music to people who only know the rumors, in Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Shanell Photo: Young Money This Week’s Main Pick Artist : Shanell Holding It Down For : Young Money Mixtape : Shut Up and Listen Real Spit : Young Money singer Shanell has been inspired by challenges almost her entire life. She grew up encouraging and battling her sister, former Danity Kane singer D. Woods, in songwriting. “It was me, my sister, and we have an older brother,” Shanell said on a recent trip to NYC. “We used to watch him. He did music before either one of us. He did television, movies, and we used to run around the house singing his songs, until we started writing our own. It was friendly competition between me and my sister, because we would always help each other and challenge each other. “I been real nice with the pen game,” she added with a smile. “I was good when I started, and I got better and better and better.” While on the road with her sister during Danity Kane’s tour in support of their debut LP, Shanell, who used to be a backup dancer, crossed paths with Ne-Yo. She was writing to a track, and he asked if he could use it for his album. The song turned out to be “Say It” from Ne-Yo’s Because of You. Ne-Yo eventually invited the singer — who went to a performing-arts high school — to be down with his camp as a songwriter. “It was really a great learning experience,” she said. “[Ne-Yo] listens to all different types of music. I know he sat me down one time and was like, ‘That’s great, but try to say all that in three lines.’ I was like ‘a challenge.’ So my writing has been influenced a lot by him.” Shanell said she decided to join Young Money because, whereas Ne-Yo’s attention was on her writing skills, Wayne saw her as a performer. “Wayne was kinda like, ‘You do this. Keep your music for yourself. You have the talent, I see what you do. You can come over here with Young Money and do what you do over here,’ ” Shanell said. “Which was the best situation I can be in. My music is a little bit different. It’s not R&B, it’s not pop, it’s not rock, it’s not alternative. It’s a fusion of everything. A lot of labels don’t let you do that, but at Young Money, they let you do that.” Wayne also gave her the freedom to take several minutes from the America Most Wanted tour to showcase her skills. She had a mini-set within Wayne’s set last summer. “It was great,” she said. “I brought dancers in. I did a lot of staging and choreographing. I loved that he believed in me enough to do that.” Shanell said her debut LP won’t be out until sometime next year, but she did just drop the mixtape Shut Up and Listen. If you have a physical copy of the disc and look inside, you’ll see a baby carriage filled with headphones and other musical items. That is a playful middle finger to the rumors that she was having Lil Wayne’s baby . “I’m trying to take a negative thing and make a positive,” ‘Nell said, who added that she was never romantically involved with Wayne. “That’s another reason I put this mixtape out, because a lot of people haven’t heard what I do. It’s all these rumors flying, that’s all they hear. So it’s here, this [mixtape] is my baby, this is what I’ve been sitting in the studio every night working on. This is my baby. This is what I’ve been pregnant with for the past nine months. So we’re just trying to take a bad rumor and turn it into something positive.” What did Weezy think of the rumors that he had knocked up his artist? “We never talked about it,” the singer insisted. “Nobody ever talks about the negative stuff. We’re too busy making records. We get on the stage and perform, we get in the studio, we’re on the radio every day.” Joints to Check For

Jenna Bentley is Some Playboy Model Lookin to Get Noticed of the Day

I don’t understand what is going on in a woman’s mind when she does this to herself or turns herself in this kind of novelty act. I know it has something to do with being raped or molested as a kid, or growing up as the ugly girl who got no male attention, who was always jealous of the girl in the classroom that all the boys wanted cuz she was staked, or maybe she realized that in America, it is just that easy to get herself in Playboy, all it takes is 5,000 dollar tits and a dream….not that being in Playboy really opens any doors for a bitch these days, which probably explains why she’s doing these staged pictures to get noticed….cuz after peaking in Playboy she realizes that she has no idea where to go next….and the whole thing isn’t hot…it’s actually really fucking poverty and desperate as far as I’m concerned….but tits are tits even if they’re stupid looking and in a cheap whore bikini…. Sons Of Sylvia Make Splash In ‘American Idol’ Debut

‘Love Left to Lose’ brotherly trio grew up on the road with preacher parents. By Gil Kaufman Sons of Sylvia’s Ashley Clark performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX They’ve been jamming together their whole lives, though they never really heard secular music until they left home. They grew up on the road with their itinerant preacher parents, playing worship tunes before forming a brotherly trio and switching from the sacred to the (slightly more) profane. Kings of Leon, right? No, actually, Sons of Sylvia . The Virginia-bred Clark brothers — lead singer/fiddler Ashley, guitarist/mandolin player Adam and resonator guitarist Austin — had their major coming-out party on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” results show, but the trio has been prepping for their turn in the spotlight for more than three years. Introduced by longtime pal Carrie Underwood, the band performed their country rock anthem “Love Left to Lose,” and after a show that featured such stars as Rascal Flatts, Shakira and Lady Antebellum, on Thursday morning (April 29) it was Sons of Sylvia who were among the most searched topics on the Internet. “A lot of people don’t know who we are,” said youngest Clark brother Austin, 26, on Wednesday afternoon, just hours before the pre-taped performance aired. He said he hoped that the world would be interested in the band come Thursday morning and that new fans would run out and buy the boys’ just-released debut, Revelation. “I hope so,” he said from a West Virginia tour date opening for Underwood. “I’m just taking it one day at a time. I don’t know what to expect. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I’m freaked out. I love it.” After the dissolution of their family band the Clark Family Experience in 2007, the trio — who have eight other siblings — rebranded themselves the Clark Brothers and quickly went on to win the first and only season of the “Idol” spin-off “The Next Great American Band.” The win earned them a recording contract with Universal South Records (they later switched to Interscope and changed their name) and a management deal with 19 Entertainment, but it would be several more years before they got their break. Longtime pals with Underwood, they performed on the song “What Can I Say” from her third album, Play On, and toured with her soon after her win on the fourth season of “Idol.” They also toured with SHeDaisy and logged time working on tracks for Southern rapper Bubba Sparxxx. But years after Ashley shared what Austin called a “really crappy” apartment in Nashville with the Clarks’ second cousin, then unknown songwriter leader Ryan Tedder, the new superstar OneRepublic leader returned the favor by co-writing and producing “Love Left to Lose,” helping to boost them into the spotlight. After pushing aside some of the more bluegrass-leaning aspects of their sound in favor of a more expansive, anthemic rock sound on the album, Austin said the group decided a name change was in order. “From the point of winning the show and making the record, we evolved so much,” he said. “We were just a three-piece acoustic band on the show and when we got to do what we wanted in the studio it evolved so much that we felt it was right to change the name.” Like KOL — who, it’s worth noting, the Clark boys know after traveling in the same preacher kid circles as youngsters — the Clarks decided to pay homage to a formative figure with their new name. “Yeah, it’s our mother’s name,” said Austin proudly. “We wanted to do something nice for her. She had 11 kids, so they’re angels!” Both of their parents had a formative influence on their musical upbringing. Dad Fredrick taught them how to play instruments and mom was a church singer, but Austin said the siblings really developed their musical chops by backing up their folks in church and picking up licks from professional pickers while playing bluegrass festivals as kids. After their parents kept them away from rock and roll when they were kids, Austin described discovering the Beatles and Rolling Stones when he left home as “like coming out of the stone age.” It’s been a long road, but for now he’s just basking in the glow of the “Idol” exposure and looking forward to being on the road with Underwood through December. “We’re brothers and I’ve been doing this since I was born,” he said. “If not on the stage, then sitting on the couch at home just trading licks. … It feels like a childhood dream as far as: start a band, get a record out and being on tour. All of this is actually happening. I wake up every day baffled.” Related Videos ‘American Idol’ In 60 Seconds Related Photos ‘American Idol’ Season Nine Performances Related Artists Sons Of Sylvia
