Just months after he announced that he would be bringing a water filtration system to Flint, the “Icon” rapper is now using his platform and resources to help the homeless. According to People , Smith brought a vegan food truck to Los Angeles and fed the homeless for free. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness , there are over 500,000 people in the United States experiencing homelessness on a given night. Feeding America reported that in 2017 nearly 40 million Americans—including over 12 million youngsters—lacked access to food. Smith isn’t the only celebrity who is focused on fighting hunger. In May, NBA star LeBron James teamed up with Walmart for the Fight Hunger Spark Change campaign to address the hunger gap experienced by communities of color, children, senior citizens, and those living in poverty. Earlier this week, JD chatted with People Now and dished on his feelings about the current state of female hip hop. “I feel like they’re all rapping about the same thing. I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper. For me, it’s, like, strippers rapping. At some point, somebody is going to have to break out of that mold.” Boy oh boy, did that strike a nerve. Many people assumed that JD was talking about Cardi B when he made the comment, and apparently so did she. The stripper turned rapper went off on Dupri during an Instagram Live session on Thursday. “First of all, I rap about my p— because she’s my best friend and second of all it’s because it seems like that’s what people want to hear. This week, notoriously unlikeable twonk Piers Morgan launched a verbal attack on Duchess Meghan Markle. He demanded that she “go back to America” if she was going to have the audacity to ask for privacy while attending her friend’s tennis match. Well that friend, Serena Williams, is speaking out, and she may have the best advice in the world when it comes to Piers and his ilk. Duchess Meghan attended The Championships in Wimbledon, where her Serena Williams was playing against Kaja Juvan. Serena is, in addition to being the greatest athletes on the planet, good friends with Meghan. Unfortunately, what should have been a simple outing became controversial after a rumor surfaced. The rumor claimed that Meghan had asked her protection officers to ask that people not take her photo. She wasn’t there as a member of the British royal family, but as a friend watching her friend play on the court. E! News reports that, when they asked Serena if Meghan should ignore her haters and continue on, Serena Williams had a stunning reply. Serena apparently “didn’t know there was negative media out there.” To be clear, she knows that it regularly exists. But she doens’t pay attention — not even to headlines. “Any time I see her name attached to anything,” Serena reveals. “I don’t read it,” Unlike the British press, who have had a field day printing insults and outright lies about the Duchess for years now, Serena has nothing but praise for Meghan. “She couldn’t be a better friend to me,” Serena shares. Even though she’s a newly married royal and a new mother, Serena says that Meghan doesn’t play games about being there to support her friends. Serena notes: “Low moments, high moments — she’s always there.” “That’s all I want to be to her,” she expresses. It’s good that Meghan has famous friends who have her back — just as she has theirs. It wasn’t just a few disgruntled fans who were allegedly asked to point their cameras in another direction that caused a stir. Professional blowhard Piers Morgan went on an unhinged rant on Good Morning Britain . (Really — it’s bad enough that he’s allowed to speak at all, but do they really have to pay him for it?) He demanded that Meghan “go back to America” if she wanted some privacy. The brainless twonk’s words struck a nerve with a lot of people — including his own cohost. For one thing, obviously, that’s an absurd demand, particularly to make of a woman who just married Prince Harry and birthed his child. But for another, Piers’ words seemed eerily reminiscent of an all-too-common racial insult hurled at black people in America and in the UK: “Go back to Africa.” The fact that he chose to excoriate the royal family’s only adult black member did not escape people’s notice. A lot of the tabloids that have invented nasty lies about Meghan have done so because she’s black and she’s American. Racists (and brits with Anti-American sentiments) will click, and then the tabloids profit while the bigots get their daily fix of rage. Serena has a good attitude about these things: if you know that it’s negative ragebait, just don’t click. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t keep coming to THG for less malicious coverage. Source: bymuratdeniz / Getty Mom Dies After Undergoing Cheap Cosmetic Surgery In Dominican Republic Another person has died trying to undergo cheap cosmetic surgery. According to PIX11 , Alexandria Medina, a 33-year-old mom from New Rochelle, saved money for years to have liposuction in the Dominican Republic, where it costs substantially less than the U.S. Despite the objection of her mother, Medina visited a clinic where two patients had already died. PEOPLE reports that Dominican surgeon Dr. Félix Almánzar agreed to the liposuction and tummy tuck operations on Medina. This was after U.S. doctors told Medina she needs to lose more weight before undergoing any procedures. On Friday, while undergoing the liposuction, Medina died on the operating table at the Santo Domingo clinic. The death certificate claims she died because of a fatty tissue embolism, or blood clot. “She was beautiful and they killed her,” Medina’s mom Connie Toro said. “They took away my little girl.” Medina said she already had concerns even before she got on the operating table. When she arrived at the clinic, Toro said Medina called her and explained that the clinic was dirty and she had to pay the surgeon up front. According to Medina’s sister, Maxine David, the surgeon didn’t even perform the tummy tuck. “He handed it off to an obstetrician , someone who is not a board certified plastic surgeon,” David said. The sister doesn’t fully believe that an embolism caused her sister’s death. “How am I to believe that that was actually the cause of death and that she stopped breathing. It could be he punctured her lung,” Toro said. Medina’s mom is now seeking justice after her daughter’s death. “First it was shock, disbelief, then it was crying continuous, then it was becoming sporadic and now it’s anger,” she said. “I’m going to hold onto this until they get these people.” Toro has been in contact with Dominican Authorities, and she said the FBI is also investigating. Medina left behind a 14-year-old son and husband. The clinic where she died has since been shut down.
Source: Image Group LA / Getty Descendants 3 Premiere Gets Canceled In Honor Of Cameron Boyce Disney announced on Thursday that they have canceled the red carpet premiere for Descendants 3 after the untimely death of actor and star Cameron Boyce . “We’re proud to be part of Cameron Boyce’s legacy by showcasing his talents on screen but we are canceling the red carpet premiere event for Descendants 3 and instead, The Walt Disney Company will make a donation to the Thirst Project, a philanthropic organization to which Cameron was deeply committed,” Disney said in a statement. The red carpet was originally scheduled for July 22. The Thirst Project is a nonprofit organization that aims to work with young people to end the global water crisis. Boyce passed away suddenly on July 6 after suffering from an epileptic seizure at his California home at the age of 20. Disney concluded, “With permission from the Boyce family, Disney Channel will dedicate the telecast of Descendants 3 in Cameron Boyce’s memory.” Descendants 3 is set to premiere on the Disney Channel on August 2. A Texas-based historically Black college is ensuring that all of its students have the support and resources needed to overcome trauma developed from past experiences. According to Dallas News , Paul Quinn College has launched a mental health campaign to help students address internal obstacles so they can thrive academically. With the help of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, they discovered that the core of the problem was trauma and many of the students were suffering from PTSD. Students were carrying the emotional burdens of tragic past experiences from their upbringings and environments and some were carrying the weight of being first-generation college students on their shoulders. “We thought we were doing good,” said Paul Quinn College president Michael Sorrell . “‘We’re bringing you out of that environment and you’ll be safe. And life will be great.’ … It took us a while to understand that that was a product of trauma.” With a grant given to the school by Gov. Greg Abbott , the institution has been able to launch several programs and initiatives under its campaign. Incoming freshman and transfer students have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a counselor and the school has an on-campus mental health center which is overseen by Dr. Stacia’ Alexander . The center is decorated with images of celebrities who have been transparent about their struggles with mental health so that the students can see themselves reflected. “The thing we’re trying to get students to understand is that those traumas are real,” Dr. Alexander told the news outlet. “And they do impair or affect how you process daily information. And if you continue to ignore that, you’re going to continue to be impaired and not reach your full potential.” In addition to the counseling, there are several wellness and fitness activities that take place on campus. Initiatives like the one being led at Paul Quinn College are needed. Studies show that over 20 percent of incoming college students have battled with mental health disorders. SEE ALSO: Taraji P.
