‘The A-Team’ Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson lead gun-loving soldiers of fortune out to prove their innocence. By Eric Ditzian Bradley Cooper in “The A-Team” Photo: 20th Century Fox “The A-Team” left the NBC airwaves in March 1987. In the ensuing 23 years, all we’ve had were reruns and the memory of Hannibal whispering, “I love it when a plan comes together!” Now those bomb-exploding, chopper-crashing, gun-loving soldiers of fortune are back, as “The A-Team” arrives in theaters on Friday (June 11). If you missed ’em or if you never even knew ’em, it’s time to meet the crew: Liam Neeson as cigar-chomping leader Hannibal; Bradley Cooper as smooth-talking Face; Sharlto Copley as loony Murdock; and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson as milk-drinking, ass-kicking B.A. Baracus. Special Forces soldiers wrongly convicted of war crimes, the four men band together to prove their innocence — and blow up a crapload of stuff in the process. The movie is, in a word, loud . It’s also a ton of fun, and MTV News wants you to enjoy the experience to the fullest. That’s why we’ve been following this project since its inception. Now, we present to you another edition of our big-screen cheat sheet: everything you need to know about “The A-Team.” The Plan Begins To Come Together After years of false starts, in January 2009, Joe Carnahan (“Smoking Aces”) signed on to direct the adaptation, with Ridley and Tony Scott coming aboard as producers. By June of that year, Cooper and Neeson had joined up, followed in August by Rampage . Copley and Jessica Biel , who plays the hard-nosed government agent going after the Team, inked deals in September. Filming on “The A-Team” kicked off in the fall, and the first photo of the guys on set popped up shortly thereafter. Days later, the world got its first peek at Rampage as Baracus , taking over the role made famous by Mr. T. Before she headed off to shoot, Biel spoke with MTV News about tackling the classic “A-Team” material. “I think it will be a little bit similar here and there, but we really have our own tone going on,” she said. “It’s a little bit less campy than the actual show and a little bit more serious action and fighting sequences but still with lots of humor. Lots and lots of humor.” The Team Lights It Up The first official glimpse of the new A-Team arrived in January 2010, when the trailer dropped online. It gave us a brief intro to the crew — and revived the pleasant sounds of the show’s familiar theme song. The studio, Fox, followed up that trailer with a slew of photos: explosions, guns and close looks at all of the characters. The following month, we were treated to introductions by video to members of the Team — Hannibal . Face and Biel’s Sosa . A second and final trailer was released in April, giving us more of everything we’ve come to expect from “The A-Team”: weapons, tough talk and mayhem. The New Crew Rolls Out Cooper, Biel, Neeson and the rest of the cast hit the red carpet last week for the Los Angeles premiere of their movie, where MTV News’ official Coca-Cola Movie Awards Insider was on hand to take in the action. Then over the weekend, we chatted with the cast once again. Cooper revealed that once they started shooting, the script basically got thrown out the window. “The script was fantastic actually,” he said. “And it sort of went away when we started shooting it, and that was an interesting process. That was probably the most morphed element of the movie, was what happened to the script.” Script or not, Carnahan and his team have got big plans for a sequel if it turns out the first one resonates with audiences more than two decades after the TV series went off the air. Those plans include the possibility of Mr. T re-entering the “A-Team” world. “My thing with T was, I brought him down to the editorial and showed him a lot of the film, and he loved it and laughed and was very supportive and seemed to really dig Rampage in that role,” Carnahan said. “I thought, where T is concerned, if there’s ever going to be a cameo, you don’t burn your powder. I think that’s a guy you save potentially for something bigger.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The A-Team.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . REVIEW: The A-Team Pushes the Action-Junk Envelope in All the Wrong Ways

The plot of The A-Team can be summed up thus: Stuff happens, connected by dialogue. Helicopters explode; human beings are nearly incinerated; trucks burst into flames. “Ha ha! Wow! You blew that thing up!” says Bradley Cooper, or Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, or Sharlto Copley — or maybe they all say it at once, though that would entail some extra coordination that’s probably beyond their grasp. Meanwhile, big-name star Liam Neeson looks on, trying to add some class to the joint, though even he seems to know it’s a losing battle.

‘The A-Team’ Reworked: Opening Scene You Won’t See

‘It’s still my favorite scene in the film — the scene we didn’t shoot,’ director Joe Carnahan tells MTV News. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Bradley Cooper Photo: MTV News Almost 30 years after those soldiers of fortune first popped up on the small screen, the A-Team is getting its origin story. The origin you’ll see at the cinema this weekend, though, flies by in an extended opening sequence and wasn’t even supposed to be part of “The A-Team.” The original opening, it turns out, was far different, and according to star Bradley Cooper and director Joe Carnahan, it could have turned out to be the best scene in the entire movie. “It’s still my favorite scene in the film, the scene we didn’t shoot,” Carnahan said. “All you saw was [Liam Neeson’s] Hannibal with these goggles on in this white environment and you realize, as the camera pulls back, there were sled dogs. And then as you pull back even further, you realize there were sled dogs going over the dunes in the desert.” Carnahan ditched that opening when the studio, Fox, prevailed upon him to provide some backstory for the Special Forces soldiers who make up the A-Team — some concrete details about how the crew was wrongly convicted as war criminals and banded together as badasses-for-hire. Yet, like Carnahan, Cooper’s favorite sequence in the script remains that original first scene. As he explained, much of the script was jettisoned once filming began. “The script was fantastic actually,” Cooper said. “And it sort of went away when we started shooting it, and that was an interesting process. That was probably the most morphed element of the movie, was what happened to the script.” If “The A-Team” does well at the box office and Fox green-lights a sequel, both Cooper and Carnahan said fans should look for that original opening to become the first scene of the second movie. “The opening in the script that we read was so fantastic — the original incarnation of the movie — that I hope the second one opens like that,” Cooper said. ‘Hangover’ Star Ken Jeong Talks Emotional MTV Movie Awards Speech

‘I’m crying because they took my frozen popcorn — my Golden Popcorn,’ he jokes of choking up onstage over wife. By Eric Ditzian Ken Jeong Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images Has a more heartfelt awards show speech ever been given in honor of a more bizarre movie moment? Surely nothing in the history of Hollywood can compare to what went down at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , when Ken Jeong — he of the naked, trunk-jumping beatdown in “The Hangover” — took the stage to pay touching tribute to his wife, Tran. As Jeong explained while accepting the award for Best WTF Moment , his wife was suffering from breast cancer during filming of “The Hangover,” and both co-star Bradley Cooper and director Todd Phillips provided Ken some much-needed emotional support. After the Movie Awards, Jeong spoke with MTV News about why he wanted to tell his personal story in front of millions. ” ‘Hangover’ was just the greatest moment that really changed my life,” Jeong told us outside the Gibson Amphitheatre. “And it just really reminded me how great Todd and Bradley were. They were the only people who knew at that time and they were just very supportive. Every single day, Todd and Bradley were like, ‘Hey man, how’s everything going? Is everything good? Is she good?’ It just got me through. And I don’t think people know what great people both of those guys are. “That’s what I take even more than the award, is how great they were and how cathartic working on that movie was,” he continued. “And it’s really to celebrate Tran, because she’s cancer-free the last two years and that really is a celebration. I’m so honored that she’s here and everything really is just for her.” As he said these words, Jeong again began to tear up, just as he had onstage. “I’m crying because they took my frozen popcorn — my Golden Popcorn. I’m crying!” he repeated. ‘Hangover’ Director Promises To Bring Back Mike Tyson For Round Two

‘I’ve got to find something for him, because he’s been texting me,’ Todd Phillips says of Iron Mike. By Todd Gilchrist, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Last summer’s biggest comedy (and six-time MTV Movie Awards nominee ) “The Hangover” knocked out audiences like an uppercut from a heavyweight champion. And it stands to reason that director Todd Phillips would bring back the first film’s actual champ, Mike Tyson, for more sparring with co-stars Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha in the sequel. Saturday night at Spike TV’s Guys Choice Awards, Phillips told MTV News that he’s looking for a part that Tyson can play in “The Hangover 2.” “I’ve got to find something for him, because he’s been texting me,” Phillips said. “I’ve got to figure it out. We’re going to find something for Mike.” The director also explained that the focus of the sequel won’t shift a lot from the first film, although some new characters will be introduced. “It’s expanding a bit, obviously,” he said. “There’s new people to be introduced. But the core cast is still who it’s about.” Since the completion of “The Hangover,” Phillips reunited with Galifianakis for a comedy called “Due Date,” which also Robert Downey Jr. Phillips said that and Downey commiserated about the challenges of following up a successful film with a satisfying sequel. “I became really close with Robert Downey, and he, of course, did ‘Iron Man 2,’ and he’s doing ‘Sherlock 2,’ ” Phillips said. “And when we were doing ‘Due Date,’ he talked to me a lot about the pressure you feel when you’re shooting that sequel, especially [for] something as beloved as ‘The Hangover’ was and, of course, as ‘Iron Man’ was.” Although audiences will enter the sequel with a wealth of expectations, Phillips said there’s actually something exciting about that pressure. “I think there’s another part of it which is really exciting — [which is] when you’re doing a comedy, can we do it again?” he explained. ” ‘The Hangover’ really worked because there were so many surprises, and it’s like, can we capture that again? So I’m kind of excited about it.” Don’t miss the live red-carpet coverage, exclusive movie clips and fist-pumping action on MTV News’ “Jersey Shore Blow-Out at the MTV Movie Awards,” airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday, June 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. ‘A-Team’ Stars Bradley Cooper, Jessica Biel Reveal Secrets To A Great Kiss

Pair will present Best Kiss at MTV Movie Awards Sunday night. By Todd Gilchrist, with reporting by Josh Horowitz MTV News’ Josh Horowitz and Jessica Biel Photo: MTV News In their new film “The A-Team,” Bradley Cooper and Jessica Biel share a memorable lip-lock as Face and one of his comely cohorts, Charisa Sosa. But as attractive as the prospect of a make-out session between these two very attractive actors might be, on Sunday night all eyes will be on the couple they present Best Kiss to at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . MTV Movies recently spoke with Cooper and Biel during interviews promoting “The A-Team,” which hits theaters June 11. In addition to describing the challenges of bringing to life a big-screen version of the beloved 1980s television series, the actors each revealed their own secrets for creating a memorable onscreen kiss. Cooper said that crafting a successful kiss has a lot to do with how it looks. “It’s got to be hot, right?” he said. The actor has enjoyed his share of smooches in recent movies, with Leslie Bibb in “The Midnight Meat Train,” Rachel McAdams in “Wedding Crashers,” Sandra Bullock in “All About Steve” and both Jennifer Connelly and Scarlett Johansson in “He’s Just Not That Into You.” (That last one more or less makes him our personal hero.) For Biel, meanwhile, the key to a great kiss has a lot to do with chemistry — and she means that literally. “Probably cherry lip gloss is a good ingredient,” she revealed. “And maybe an Altoid.” In addition to her recent smooch with Cooper, during her movie career Biel has shared sweet moments with Freddie Prinze Jr., Chris Evans, Nicolas Cage, Adam Sandler and Jamie Foxx. She admitted that her secrets to onscreen kissing were probably applicable to kisses in the real world as well, calling it good advice “in general, really.” Check out the nominees for Best Kiss at MovieAwards.MTV.com, where your vote will help pick the winner! Bradley Cooper Says Zach Galifianakis Is The ‘Toughest Guy’ At ‘A-Team’ Premiere

MTV Movie Awards nominee says not even his ‘A-Team’ co-stars could go toe-to-toe with bearded ‘Hangover’ actor. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by Lauren Davis Bradley Cooper Photo: Michael Caulfield/ Getty Images Bradley Cooper is kicking butt and taking names as Lt. Templeton “Face” Peck in “The A-Team.” But real life doesn’t always imitate art, as Cooper admitted he isn’t quite as tough as his onscreen Special Forces soldier. The real badass, he said, is his “The Hangover” co-star Zach Galifianakis . “No one’s tougher than Zach Galifianakis, who played Allen [in ‘The Hangover’], so I don’t even try to even compare anybody,” Cooper told MTV News at movie’s Los Angeles premiere on Thursday. That may come as a surprise to fans looking forward to seeing the big-screen adaptation of the classic 80s TV series. “The A-Team” cast lineup &#8212 including Liam Neeson, Sharlto Copley and former UFC fighter Quinton “Rampage” Jackson &#8212 isn’t exactly made up of wimpy guys. Still, MTV Movie Awards nominee Cooper insisted bearded funnyman Galifianakis was the dude to be most afraid of. “They won’t make it,” Coopers said of his other co-stars. “He’s the toughest guy I ever met.” While Cooper was focused on Galifianakis, someone else was focused on Cooper. “The Hills” star Stephanie Pratt told MTV News she became a fan of the cute actor after seeing him in “The Hangover.” “The movie looks so funny,” Pratt said. “I’m gonna say, I think I’m gonna like [Cooper] better in the ‘A-Team.’ ” Does Zach Galifianakis seem like a tough guy to you?
