Kanye West To Perform On ‘Saturday Night Live’

MC will appear on the October 2 episode, which ‘Breaking Bad’ star Bryan Cranston will host. By Jocelyn Vena Kanye West Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/ Getty Images Kanye West will appear as the musical guest on the October 2 episode of “Saturday Night Live,” which will be hosted by “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston. The high-profile appearance, which NBC confirmed to MTV News on Tuesday (September 21) morning, will come less than a month after West closed out the VMAs with the debut of a new song, “Runaway.” West may have dissed the show in his track “Power” — where he raps, “F— ‘SNL’ and the whole cast. Tell ’em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass” — but it doesn’t seem that the bookers minded very much. West’s last “SNL” appearance came during its 2007 season premiere; he also appeared in a sketch during that episode, which was hosted by NBA star LeBron James. There is no word on whether he will act during this upcoming appearance. West appears to be settling scores in 2010. During his VMA appearance, he laid to rest the Taylor Swift incident from a year prior. She too seemed to be putting the skirmish behind them in her new song, the tentatively titled “Innocent.” During the year between West’s interruption of Swift’s Best Female Video acceptance speech at the 2009 VMAs and the beef-squashing earlier this month, both Swift and former beau Taylor Lautner appeared on “SNL” (on separate occasions) and took a few shots at the rapper. West is the latest high-profile musical act added to the NBC show’s lineup. Katy Perry is set to perform on the show’s season premiere on September 25, which will be hosted by “SNL” alum Amy Poehler. USA Today reports that Bruno Mars, who was arrested over the weekend for alleged cocaine possession, is set to perform on the October 9 episode of “SNL,” which “Glee” star Jane Lynch will host . Jimmy Fallon, Betty White Earn Our Alternate Emmys

MTV News picks the truly award-worthy moments — and the massive fails. By Gil Kaufman Jimmy Fallon at the 2010 Emmy Awards Photo: Mathew Imaging/ Getty Images Sunday night’s Emmy Awards were full of unforgettable moments and thrilling first-time wins for the casts and brilliant minds behind “Modern Family,” “Breaking Bad” and “Glee.” But because there’s no Emmy Award for the Emmy broadcast itself, MTV News decided to sprinkle a bit more Hollywood pixie dust on Sunday night’s winners and losers with our own nods to the show highlights. Instant Viral-Video Hit : Host Jimmy Fallon didn’t knock it out of the park, but his opening musical tribute to “Glee,” set to the tune of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” became an overnight viral hit. Social-Networking Fail : Fallon promised to take the Emmys into the future with some Twitter bits, but his introductions of presenters courtesy of viewer tweets fell flat nearly every time. Best Name That Totally Sounds Like It Was Made Up : Bucky Gunts. We were totally with comedian Ricky Gervais when he said he hoped the director of the opening ceremonies for the Vancouver Olympics with the vaguely porn-y sounding name would win his category. Worst Use of a Prop : Gervais provided many moments of hilarity during his time onstage (go back and listen to the Mel Gibson bit), but perhaps the night’s most awkward moment came after his rant about how, unlike at the Golden Globes, there’s no booze at the Emmys. He rectified that situation by sending waiters out into the audience with a variety of microbrews for the attendees. Things got a bit weird, though, when former “Friends” star Matthew Perry, who has spent time in rehab, had to politely decline a bottle of suds. Think It, But Don’t Say It Award : Definitely goes to three-time Emmy winner Edie Falco for joking after she won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy for her role in “Nurse Betty”: “I’m not funny.” Guess who else doesn’t think you are? All of the other women in the category. Best Unexpected Cameo by the Subject of a TV Movie You’d Never Heard Of : Admit it, you got a bit misty when the spunky inspiration and namesake for “Temple Grandin” stood up during David Strathairn’s acceptance speech and showed off her lady rancher outfit and later took the stage with her Hollywood doppelg

Does Med Men Urge Us to Self-Destruct?

“I’ll admit that there are a few things I envy about Don Draper, but desultory sex in a sh*t-brown apartment with a hooker who smacks me in the face while my kids eat Thanksgiving dinner at their new Daddy’s place isn’t on the list.” And with that, the battle over what viewers can learn from Mad Men ‘s quality-of-life issues is engaged. Thanks as always, Katie Roiphe ! [ The Awl ]

Television’s Best Crime Families Ranked From Funny to Fearless

Some of television’s best and longest-running series in recent years have featured families full of crooks, mobsters, drug dealers and con artists. And just this week, a new wave of projects featuring clans of outlaws crested with ABC’ s Scoundrels , which features Virginia Madsen as a matriarch trying desperately to straighten out her crooked family. Meanwhile, in Scoundrels ‘ wake, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht (who headed HBO during the rise of The Sopranos ) acquired the rights to the Australian crime drama Underbelly , which currently features blood-related gang members, and Jamie Foxx shot a trailer for a mob family drama called Tommy’s Little Girl . In honor of this perennial programming trend, Movieline has compiled some of television’s best crime families over the years and ranked them — from funny to fearless.
