Bozell Column: Smearing Republican Women

In 1992, the feminists in the media rejoiced at what they called “The Year of the Woman,” when ten Democratic women (and one Republican) were running for the Senate in the aftermath of Anita Hill’s unproven sexual-harassment allegations against Clarence Thomas. Just two years before, seven Republican women (and two Democrats) ran. But the media yawned. In 1992, the evening newscasts aired 29 stories exclusively devoted to women Senate candidates. In 1990, there was one…on election night. In 1992, the morning shows interviewed women Senate candidates on 26 occasions. In 1990, there were zero interviews. This was all about the party affiliation. When the liberals Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein both won primary elections from the U.S. Senate in California in 1992, Time reporter Margaret Carlson almost levitated in ecstasy. “There was a rush, an exultation, that surpassed any political moment I have ever known — better even than Geraldine Ferraro’s vice-presidential candidacy.”   The primary elections on June 8 brought this memory rushing back. Republican women won gubernatorial primaries in South Carolina and New Mexico. The national media had plenty to say about Nikki Haley of South Carolina before the election, which is to say they had an endless regurgitation of unproven adultery charges to level against her. One low point came from former Clinton bimbo-crusher George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” asking Nikki Haley on the morning after her victory about how she’s somehow embarrassing her state by being accused without proof: “Do you expect more incoming during the runoff?” And: “Can you assure South Carolina voters that they’re not going to be embarrassed if they elect you?” Stephanopoulos, like many good Clintonistas, is incapable of embarrassment over his hypocrisy.                       Susana Martinez, winner of her gubernatorial primary in New Mexico, has another complaint. One gathers New Mexico is too far away from the East Coast for the media to notice. She’s been utterly ignored. Then there are the two female business leaders who won their GOP primaries in California, one for the Senate and the other for governor. On ABC, Stephanopoulos demeaned their business credentials of as a minus, not a plus, because of the oil spill. “Meg Whitman, head of eBay. Carly Fiorina ran Hewlett- Packard. There’s some controversy there.” Stephanopoulos had invited on the perpetually annoying British import Tina Brown, who complained “it almost feels as if all these women winning are kind of a blow to feminism. Because, each one of them, really, most of them, are, you know, very much, you know, against so many of things that women have fought for such a long time.” George Stephanopoulos invited no Republican guests on this occasion, so he attempted a mild rebuttal to Brown: “Well, you could argue they’re different kinds of feminists. They’ve had a lot of success in different fields.” Brown snapped back: “Women, too, can be wingnuts, is the point.” It’s bizarre that Brown is so blind that she doesn’t think you could call Barbara Boxer or her beloved Hillary Clinton a “wingnut,” only the conservative or Republican women. Several networks found “news” and some kind of national controversy in Fiorina mocking Sen. Boxer’s hairdo as “so yesterday” when she was wearing an open microphone off-camera. Stephanopoulos gave it a whole story when he moonlighted as evening anchorman on “World News.” NBC’s “Today” led off the show with this nothing-burger and mentioned it three times. Co-host Hoda Kotb touted it as a “big gaffe-a-rooney.” Newsweek’s Eleanor Clift insisted Fiorina was wrong about just who was “so yesterday” in politics. “And these two Republican women are also social conservatives in a state that’s very pro-choice. So maybe those issues will be cast as ‘so yesterday.’” Eleanor’s wishful thinking had to be corrected by Monica Crowley, who informed her that Whitman favors abortion. That’s not as bad as Jerry Brown accusing Whitman in advance of tarring him in her ads: “It’s like Goebbels. Goebbels invented this kind of propaganda. He took control of the whole world. She wants to be president. That’s her ambition, the first woman president. That’s what this is all about.” Amount of network outrage? Zip. The only network mention came from ABC’s Jake Tapper on “This Week,” and even he said “regardless of the tastelessness, Jerry Brown has a point…that she has a lot of money.” The media can disregard a lot of tastelessness when the women who are smeared are Republicans.

Stephanopoulos Enchanted By Obama’s ‘Marshal Language’ and ‘Feel of FDR’

President Barack Obama’s Oval Office address about the oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico certainly impressed George Stephanopoulos, though that’s not a difficult achievement for the favorably pre-disposed Democratic operative turned network political expert. ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC were all back to regular programming two minutes or less after Obama finished, but that was enough time for Stephanopoulos to display his delight. “What struck me tonight,” he informed ABC anchor Diane Sawyer, is: Oval Office addresses are often used when the nation is at war and tonight the President used marshal language. He talked about a “siege,” the “assault on our shores” and his “battle plan” to fix it. And he said we have to “rally together.” The co-host of ABC’s Good Morning America proceeded to relay, presuming the inspirational goal was met, that the White House was “reaching for” the “feel of Franklin Roosevelt during World War II and those fireside chats and the President even said that during World War II they said we couldn’t build enough planes and tanks, but we did. We can beat this as well.” To which, Sawyer chimed in by quoting liberal hero FDR: “Only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” From immediately following Obama’s 8 PM EDT speech on Tuesday night, June 15: GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: What struck me tonight, Diane, is you know those Oval Office addresses are often used when the nation is at war and tonight the President used marshal language. He talked about a “siege,” the “assault on our shores” and his “battle plan” to fix it. And he said we have to “rally together.” And I think what the White House was reaching for tonight is the feel of Franklin Roosevelt during World War II and those fireside chats and the President even said that during World War II they said we couldn’t build enough planes and tanks, but we did. We can beat this as well. DIANE SAWYER: “Only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

Brent Bozell Reacts to Americans’ Heightened Anger with the Media

Managing Editor’s Note: The following is a statement that NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell released earlier today. Americans have spoken and they are livid with the media. A new Rasmussen poll found an astonishing two thirds of American voters are at least somewhat angry at the media, including an entire one third who said they are ‘very angry.’ That’s disturbing but unfortunately, not surprising. The liberal media lost touch with the public and fair reporting long ago, and Americans are sick of their lavish praise for a President that is leading our country and economy into a disastrous state. The American people are abandoning the old media by the millions because they are simply fed up.” Now is the time for the national, so-called “news” media to Tell The Truth! and report the facts. The American people are furious and are demanding answers.

Follow-up: AP TV Says Etheridge ‘Mandhandles’ Questioner; Text Coverage Goes Soft

It would appear, based on the graphic tease reproduced at the right and the underlying content, that the folks putting together videos at the Associated Press didn’t get the memo that they should go as soft as possible on North Carolina Democratic Congressman Bob Etheridge. Etheridge arguably committed assault ” last week ” when approached on a public street. The description of what occurred and its aftermath at AP video is quite a bit stronger than what is found in AP Reporter Martha Waggoner’s Monday evening text report , as you will see shortly. Despite having over 400 words with which to work, Waggoner also failed to record a comment — or even a “no comment” — from anyone else in the Democratic Party, or to give any indication that she or anyone else at AP tried to contact House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, any other Democrat in a leadership position, or anyone in the Obama administration. Here’s what the video and accompanying description look like in the AP’s raw video : Now let’s look how Waggoner chose to describe the physical actions that occurred (bolded), and how obsessed she is with the video’s origins: A Democratic congressman apologized Monday after video posted online showed him swatting at the camera , demanding that two men taping him identify themselves and grabbing one of them by the wrist and neck . “I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved,” Rep. Bob Etheridge of North Carolina said in a statement. “No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become, this does not justify a poor response.” The video was posted on websites owned by Andrew Breitbart, the conservative Web entrepreneur who also released video of workers for the community organizing group ACORN counseling actors posing as a pimp and prostitute. It shows two men approaching Etheridge with a camera on a Washington street. He swats at the camera and repeatedly asks the men who they are. When they say they are students, he grabs one by the wrist and quickly by the back of the neck before pulling him against his side. … In a telephone interview from London, Breitbart declined to name the students who recorded the video, saying he wanted to protect them. The two do not work for Breitbart and were not paid, he said. A Breitbart employee found the video online, edited it and posted it, he said. A story accompanying the video on a Breitbart website says the video was recorded last week. Etheridge declined to say when the encounter occurred. As was the case with the AP’s unbylined initial report discussed yesterday (at NewsBusters ; at BizzyBlog ), Waggoner did not go to any legal experts to get their opinion as to whether Etheridge’s actions could be seen as an instance of criminal assault. It’s not an argumentative leap to say that the if a Republican or conservative had committed such an action, the AP and other establishment media outlets would not be leaving the GOP leadership and other party members alone, would be giving the incident far more play than it has received thus far, and would likely be using stronger words to describe the physical aspects of what happened. In fact, a post to follow shortly will discuss a shoving incident from three years ago in which a Republican politician was involved that was deemed to be news at a publication where the Etheridge incident was ignored. Stay tuned. Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .

Time Offers ‘Ten Questions’ to Charlie Crist, Like ‘Who’ll Remember the Tea Party in 20 Years?’

Last year, Time offered its “Ten Questions” feature to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal , but the reader questions it selected were mostly hostile, panning his response to the State of the Union, asking if he looked like the geeky Kenneth the Page from “30 Rock,” and underlining the shakiness of the GOP: “Voters rejected the GOP in November. What changes do you think it needs to make in order to become relevant again?” This week, Time offered the same feature to Florida Gov. Charlie Crist , and the questions were not hostile, except for “Why don’t you support same-sex marriage?” and maybe “Do you still consider your support for the stimulus to have been the right choice?” There were neutral oil-spill questions, and then there were these: “How difficult was it to leave the Republican Party?” —  David Hutchinson, Kansas City, Kans. “What are the pros and cons of running as an independent?” — Kevin Waters, Harrisburg, Pa. “Will people still remember the Tea Party in 20 years?” — Justin Powlison, Raleigh, N.C. “Is our current political polarization temporary or permanent?” — Chad Dominicis, Miami “I am a liberal Republican. I s there room in the party for me?” — Jeffrey Hersh, Columbus, Ohio “Does the space program need to be saved?” The last time they offered these Questions to Republicans was to Karl Rove , and there again, Time found the questioner to ask “Is being the ‘party of no’ working for the Republicans?”

Poll Finds Americans Think Dems Are Too Liberal, Undermining Media Meme

The legacy media love to paint steadfast conservatives as “far right” “ideologues” who are destroying the GOP’s “big tent” and “purging” moderates. The notion that the Republican Party has drifted too far to the right, however, is contradicted by a new Gallup poll showing that Americans are more concerned about Democrats’ fringe elements. About half (49%) of poll respondents told Gallup that they thought the Democratic Party is too far left. Forty-two percent said the GOP is too far right. The former number is the highest it has been since 1994, when Republicans picked up 54 seats in the House and eight in the Senate. Of course most journalists probably don’t share that sentiment–indeed, a number have bemoaned President Obama’s supposed refusal to move even further to the left. Since those journalists are well outside of the nation’s mainstream, center-right political outlook, they will inevitably see Republicans as too far right and Democrats as moderate and centrist. Hence we have Chris Matthews decrying the “frightening, almost Cambodia re-education camp going on in [the Republican] party, where they’re going around to people, sort of switching their minds around saying, if you’re not far right, you’re not right enough.” There is probably not much hope in showing Matthews the light, but this new Gallup poll should dispel theories such as Mark Halperin’s , that Republicans’ steadfast opposition to the president’s agenda is “unlikely to produce a majority against the administration.” In fact, as long as voters see the Democrats’ agenda as too far to the left, such opposition is likely to pay off in November. Ed Morrissey explains : First, it speaks to voter enthusiasm for Democratic candidates.  They won’t get the kind of turnout in 2010 that they did in 2008 when half of all Americans consider them the extreme.  Independents are the biggest problem; in 2008, when Democrats extended their control of Congress and took the White House, independents were narrowly split 43/40 in thinking that the Democratic Party ideological position was “about right.”  Now they have a 19-point deficit among independents, 33/52. They have even lost 10 points among Democrats for “about right” in the last two years, although that got evenly split between “too conservative” and “too liberal.” Second, Obama and Democratic leadership have already hinted that they want to argue in the midterms  that Republicans are the real extremists.  That argument would have worked, according to Gallup’s data, until Democrats started pushing ObamaCare through Congress.  At that point, a plurality of voters thought the GOP was too conservative as opposed to “about right,” 43/34.  That has shifted to 40/41, while Democrats have gone from a “too liberal/about right” split of 46/42 to 49/38 in the same period.  They’re not going to win a debate over extremism, not while rolling up debt like a college freshman with his first Visa card.
