‘Breaking Dawn’ Breaks Box-Office Records

Latest ‘Twilight’ entry has third-highest opening day ever. By Ryan J. Downey Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in “Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit “Twilight” fans came out in force Friday and made sure “Breaking Dawn” broke records. “The Twilight Saga” may be drawing to a close, but there’s nothing close to a slowdown at the box office. Estimates put the Friday numbers for the second-to-last entry in the series at $138 million around the world, as “Breaking Dawn” rolled out in 54 global markets. The domestic box office received a welcome 11 percent boost from the same period last year, thanks to the legions of “Twilight” fans. Midnight showings helped propel “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” past “The Dark Knight,” “Transformers” and most of the “Potter” movies in the all-time opening-day box-office record books. “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” enjoyed the third-highest opening day ever with a projected $72 million in domestic receipts, according to studio estimates. The first part of Edward, Bella and Jacob’s final chapter together didn’t manage to beat the opening day of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” or 2009’s “New Moon,” but it was a close race between the “Twilight” films. “New Moon” opened with $72.7 million, and final calculations could change the outcome between the two. “Twilight” fans who endured long lines for midnight showings accounted for $30.25 million of the “Breaking Dawn” first day-number. Based on the receipts thus far, industry watchers predict an opening weekend in the $140 million range, which is more than Summit Entertainment’s conservative projections. That would give the latest “Twilight” the fifth-highest opening weekend ever behind “Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” “The Dark Knight,” “Spider-Man 3” and “New Moon.” “Eclipse” opened with $68.5 million; the first “Twilight” debuted with $36 million. Critics savaged director Bill Condon’s first foray into Stephenie Meyer territory, but audiences have told a different story. “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” scored a paltry 27 percent on film review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes , but audiences have given it a B+ CinemaScore. “Eclipse” and the first film remain tied as the best-reviewed in the series, with 49 percent each on the Tomatometer. As expected, nothing else in theaters had anything close to the momentum of the continuing “Twilight” phenomenon. Despite additional revenue from 3-D showings, “Happy Feet 2” opened with less than half of the previous movie’s first day in 2006. The animated feature (which once again features the voice of “The Lord of the Rings” star Elijah Wood) took in just $5.9 million, according to studio estimates. Last weekend’s #1 movie, “Immortals,” was down 74 percent with $3.82 million. That decline is much worse than comparable swords-and-sandals action pictures like “300” and “Clash of the Titans.” The horribly reviewed Adam Sandler vehicle “Jack and Jill” made $3.5 million in its second Friday in theaters. “Puss in Boots” dropped steeply but has earned well over $100 million in the last few weeks. Well over a decade ago, the big box-office story started with a T as well: “Titanic” was on its way to become the highest-grossing movie of all time (later surpassed by “Avatar”) and the heartthrob generating all the heat was Leonardo DiCaprio, not Robert Pattinson. Nowadays, the 37-year-old actor and philanthropist is all grown up and starring in director Clint Eastwood’s “J. Edgar” biopic. The limited-release period drama dropped 58 percent on its second Friday and has generated an estimated $16.6 million thus far. The movie certainly wasn’t conceived as a blockbuster. DiCaprio still has summer-movie clout: “Inception” has grossed nearly $300 million since it was released in July 2010. ‘Breaking Dawn’ Screenwriter Invited Herself To Wedding

‘I was [Bella’s mom] Renee’s friend from California,’ Melissa Rosenberg says of scripting backstory for her ‘Part 1’ cameo. By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz The wedding scene from “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit The first “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” teaser trailer , released back in June, gave fans a look at the wedding of Bella Swan and Edward Cullens. But equally interesting were the guests of honor featured in the wedding sequence, which introduced new characters like the Denali clan of vampires. But with the movie in theaters on Friday (November 18), one attendee in particular will likely have Twilighters geeking out. “The Twilight Saga” author Stephenie Meyer made her first cameo in the series back in 2008’s “Twilight,” playing a restaurant patron. But the author-turned-executive producer on parts 1 and 2 of “Breaking Dawn” couldn’t resist returning to the big screen so she could attend the wedding ceremony she inspired. In a blink-and-you-miss it moment, Meyer can be spotted sitting in the pews on Bella and Edward’s big day. But she’s not the only behind-the-scenes figure who makes a sneak appearance. “I’m right next to her!” “Breaking Dawn” screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg recently told MTV News. Rosenberg understands, however, if fans don’t recognize her on the first viewing, because even she couldn’t find her cameo at first. She admitted to jokingly telling director Bill Condon that “there’s one guest at the wedding who’s not seen enough,” until Condon added a few more frames in the movie. But when Rosenberg still couldn’t spot herself among the guests, Condon took matters into his own hands. “Finally, during one screening, he stopped and said, ‘See! There you are!’ ” she said with a laugh. “It was Stephenie and then [producer] Wyck Godfrey and then myself and then [producer] Bill Bannerman, we were all in the same row at the wedding.” And as Meyer and Rosenberg are behind the “Twilight Saga” screenplays, it only makes sense that they took the time to come up with a backstory for their respective characters at the wedding. “Stephenie was married to Wyck, and I was [Bella’s mom] Renee’s friend from California,” Rosenberg explained. It sounds like there’s a fan-fiction to be written about the time between Meyer’s diner dinner and when she got invited to the Cullen wedding!” Did you spot the screenwriters in “Breaking Dawn – Part”? Breaking Dawn Director Gave Fans ‘A Lot’ Of Sex

Bill Condon tells MTV News he tried ‘to give people the experience they had reading the book’ in ‘Part I.’ By Terri Schwartz, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Director Bill Condon on the set of “Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson Photo: Andrew Cooper/Summit a href=”http://www.mtv.com/movies/movie/454504/moviemain.jhtml”> “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” features two of the most hotly anticipated moments in the entire “Twilight Saga.” First, love birds Bella Swan and Edward Cullen finally get it on. And later, in a far less tender scene, Bella endures a pretty gory birth to give life to her half-human, half-vampire daughter, Renesmee. Bill Condon knew all along that those two scenes were pivotal moments that he would need to get right onscreen. But keeping in mind the PG-13 rating the studio wanted to preserve, the director also knew that he had to tackle those intense sequences without going too far over the line. When MTV News caught up with Condon, he predicted that fans will be pleased with the final product (especially the sex scene), which hit theaters on Friday (November 18). As in the novel, the honeymoon scene plays out mostly through Bella remembering the passionate night the morning after, which allowed Condon to show the event in several parts. “I think when you see the movie you’ll see, you think you get it and then you get more of it and then you get more of it, which I think was part of the intention because it’s such a big thing — everyone’s been waiting for it,” he said. “We just wanted to make sure you got a lot of it when you got it.” And Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were good sports about the whole process, Condon said, though he admitted filming the steamy section got “kind of clinical.” The scene was carefully choreographed but the two lead actors were “so cool about it.” The birthing sequence, which easily could have pushed the film to an “R” rating, proved similarly challenging. Condon wanted to stay as true as possible to Stephenie Meyer’s depiction but he knew he couldn’t be too graphic. “You want to give people the experience they had reading the book, and that was incredibly powerful, the way Stephenie described it. “You can’t show everything, obviously, we have a [PG-13] rated movie,” he said. “But we did it through the point of view of Bella and what she can see as she’s giving birth. I think your imagination fills in a lot of that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Robert Pattinson ‘Like A Dad’ To Mackenzie Foy

‘I don’t see him as cute,’ 11-year-old actress who plays vampire/human daughter Renesmee Cullen tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images With the official release of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” just a few days away, it’s hard to focus on anything else “Twilight”-related. But here at MTV News we can and do, particularly since we managed to snag an interview with Mackenzie Foy on Monday night at the Los Angeles premiere, where the adorable young actress said she was only allowed to see “bits and pieces,” given a few intense and steamy scenes , Never mind the fact that there’s still another year to go before we see Foy onscreen when “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” opens, we were just excited to talk to her about playing Renesmee, the half-vampire/ half-human daughter of Edward and Bella. “To be honest, I’m really excited about this part too,” Foy gushed. “I knew that [playing] Renesmee Cullen was going to be a big, amazing experience. I knew that she was going to be an amazing big part to do and I’m ready for it and I did it.” The blue-eyed, brown-haired 11-year-old admitted that she might look “just a little bit like” her onscreen parents, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, and had nothing but praise for how nice everyone was to her during filming — except, of course, when it came to using naughty language. We heard Foy made out like a bandit by charging her co-stars money every time they swore, so we asked her to confirm. “Yes, it is true! They would say bad words, and I put it all in this little bucket called the ‘Swear Jar.’ I don’t really know [how much I made], I know it was a lot but I donated it all to St. Jude’s,” she revealed, adding that no one in particular was more foul-mouthed than any other castmember. “They all swear pretty evenly,” she said. We moved on to another important question: Like millions of other Twilighters, does Foy think co-star Pattinson is cute? “I don’t see him as cute,” she said matter-of-factly. “He’s really nice and all, but he’s more of a friend or a brother or a dad to me. … Kristen is an amazing, sweet, wonderful actress and I’m so lucky to be working with her,” she added. “She’s an amazing person.” And what does she think about Taylor Lautner, her would-be future onscreen love interest? “He is nice, he’s funny, he just loves to be with people,” Foy said. “I loved working with all of them; they’re really sweet.” Finally, regarding her favorite scene to shoot, Foy hinted that it’s one toward the end of the movie (and likely the franchise) between Renesmee and Jacob. “My favorite scene to shoot was one of the very last scenes with Taylor. It’s one where I’m on him and it’s just really cool,” she teased. “I’m not going to give out details, but it’s a really amazing scene.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Nick Jonas Dishes On Writing For Demi Lovato, Charice

Jonas Brother says channeling female perspective is a ‘challenge.’ By Jocelyn Vena Nick Jonas Photo: MTV News It wasn’t too hard for Nick Jonas to write for Quaker Chewy Superstar Search winner, 14-year-old Gabrielle Giguere : The Jonas Brother has a lot of experience digging around inside the female brain. Long before he hit the studio with Giguere this year, he had already received killer production and writing credits for some of his A-list peers. So, what’s it like to have to think like a girl? “I think my first experience with that was working with Demi [Lovato] on her record,” Jonas recalled to MTV News. “We were a big part of her first record, [ Don’t Forget, ] and helping craft that. And I was a part of her second, [ Here We Go Again, ] as well.” When the 19-year-old has to channel his feminine side, he simply asks the artist herself about the experiences she has been going through and tries to encapsulate them in a song. “It was really cool to be able to speak with [Demi] about what she was going through in her life and craft a song for the setting,” he said of his role as producer/writer. “And I really enjoyed that and having done a lot of writing and producing for other people this year like Charice [‘One Day’] and others. It was great to get that mindset and take on that challenge.” The transition to working with a smaller artist like Giguere wasn’t too difficult for Jonas, given the way he works. For him, it’s all about tailoring each recording session to the artist. “In my experience, I try and work specifically with the vocalist and try to figure out how they work and what their process is and get the best result from them by learning them first,” he said. “We had the time to do that, and I feel like we came up with a really great-sounding song [with ‘My Time’].” For now, though, Jonas might have to let other artists’ projects take the backseat as he focuses on his own, including a nearly six-month-long run as the lead in Broadway’s “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” as well as work on the next Jonas Brothers album . Does Nick Jonas do a good job getting in touch with his feminine side? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Taylor Lautner’s Werewolf Grows Up In ‘Breaking Dawn’

‘I’m always continuing to grow and learn more about myself each and every day, so I can definitely relate to that,’ actor tells MTV News. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment Eventually, all werewolves have to grow up. Jacob learns that lesson during the finale of the “Twilight” series, “Breaking Dawn,” and as it turns out, the man behind Jacob, Taylor Lautner , has been learning the same lesson each and every day. MTV News’ Josh Horowitz sat down with Lautner while he was promoting the penultimate “Twilight” release, set to hit theaters Friday. Lautner said the Jacob we see in “Breaking Dawn” is a whole other type of animal. “It was really exciting for me, because Jacob in this movie is very different than he ever has been, so I was a little nervous. I was excited,” he said. For Lautner, “Breaking Dawn” was a chance for each of the film’s characters to show a different side, but he admitted that he struggled particularly with Jacob. “It’s really amazing to see all of the characters, really, in a different light than you’ve ever seen them before,” Lautner said. “But Jacob was a challenge in this movie, being pulled in two totally different directions and kind of being the middle man. He has to make a decision: which side are you going to choose?” In “Breaking Dawn,” Jacob must decide between his loyalties to Bella and her unborn vampire child and his wolf pack, a very adult decision for a teenage werewolf to make. Lautner himself still has his moments of immaturity but said it’s all part of the bigger picture. “I have my kid-fun moments, I guess, but I would say it’s a good mixture. I don’t think you’ve ever found exactly who you are,” he said. “I’m always continuing to grow and learn more about myself each and every day, so I can definitely relate to that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Liam Neeson ‘Eager’ To See ‘Dark Knight Rises’

But the actor, whose Ra’s Al Ghul is rumored to be in the threequel, says he doesn’t have ‘a f—ing clue’ about the film. By Kevin P. Sullivan Liam Neeson Photo: MTV News Whether Liam Neeson will reprise his villainous role of Ra’s Al Ghul for the final film of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy remains one of the biggest question marks hovering over “The Dark Knight Rises.” Rumors fill Internet forums, hyping the villain’s potential return, but we’ll let you decide if you want to seek out the clues. If you ask Neeson about “Rises,” he might act a little confused. When MTV News sat down with the Academy Award-nominated actor to discuss his upcoming film “The Grey,” Neeson’s role in “Batman Begins” slipped his mind for a second. “You’re throwing me for a loop there,” Neeson said after a long pause. “That’s right. I was in ‘Batman.’ I trained him,” he added in his best Ra’s voice with a laugh. While it’s still up in the air whether he’ll make an appearance, Neeson has already appeared in the form of a voice-over in the trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises,” which recycled some of his lines from “Batman Begins.” One of the hints that has been repeatedly dropped by people involved with the film is that the conclusion to the trilogy brings everything full-circle, perhaps referencing returning elements from “Batman Begins.” With the series drawing to a close, Neeson said he looks back fondly on the first two Batman films and is looking forward to the finale. “Chris Nolan’s made wonderful films, very rich, dark and complex, especially [‘The Dark Knight’]. Of course, it was cloaked in tragedy,” Neeson said, referencing the death of Heath Ledger. But when it comes to “Rises,” Neeson claims to be completely in the dark. “I’m eager to see this one,” he said. “I haven’t a f—ing clue what it’s about.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Dark Knight Rises.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Sleeping At Last’s Ryan O’Neal calls submitting ‘Turning Page’ for the soundtrack a ‘shot in the dark,’ in ‘Twilight’ Tuesday. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn” Photo: Summit We’re back again for another “Twilight” Tuesday , our recently resurrected weekly column dedicated to anything and everything popping in the house that Stephenie Meyer built. Not that we’ve been lacking content this month, since “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 1” opens this week, but there’s always something to spotlight. This week’s special subject: the lucky artists on the soundtrack. When you’re associated with any of the “Twilight” films, no matter in what capacity, it’s kind of a big deal — particularly if you are an emerging artist on the music scene and one of your songs is selected to be part of the “Breaking Dawn” soundtrack . That dream recently came true for singer/songwriter Ryan O’Neal from Sleeping At Last when he found out his song “Turning Page” made the final cut. “I wrote ‘Turning Page’ about six months ago, and it was something I felt I really wanted to be from Edward’s perspective,” he told MTV News recently, after a special concert performance for the fans camped out before the premiere in “tent city.” “I thought, ‘That makes sense,’ and things just kind of layered on itself. And after the first few piano chords, I felt like that was where I wanted to go with it. So then I sent it in, which was a total shot in the dark. I hadn’t heard anything [for a while], so I was pretty sure it was a no-go. And then a couple months ago, I got a call and was told it was in some of the parts of the film.” In exactly what parts of the film does his song appear? When Bella is walking down the aisle and during the highly anticipated sex scene. Can you imagine sending in a song as a “shot in the dark” and then finding out that it is featured in not one, but two scenes? And not only that, but those two scenes happen to be two of the most important in the movie? O’Neal is a lucky duck. A hugely talented and deserving one, that is, and very appreciative. “I’m still kind of wrapping my head around the whole thing,” O’Neal said. “I’m so, so privileged. I can’t even believe it.” What would you like to see on “Twilight” Tuesdays? Hit me up @KaraWarner on Twitter to make your voice heard! Zuccotti Park Reopens To Occupy Wall Street Protesters

MTV News hits the streets to talk to demonstrators after early morning police raid. By Joel Hanek Occupy Wall Street protesters in Zuccotti Park before being evicted on Tuesday morning Photo: Spencer Platt/ Getty Images Hours after police officers evicted hundreds of protesters from Zuccotti Park , a judge ordered that they be allowed to return. Nearly two months from the inaugural protest date, NYPD officers moved into the lower Manhattan park, forcing out protesters as cleaning crews moved in. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg addressed the matter on his website and assured that the move was only temporary. “Protesters have had two months to occupy the park with tents and sleeping bags. Now they will have to occupy the space with the power of their arguments.” Patrick Macleod, a member of the Occupy movement who arrived on site shortly after the police had cleared out the space, reported several skirmishes and use of tear gas by police in the early morning confrontation. Click through to “Voices From Occupy Wall Street” — our interactive photo gallery — and get to know 20 young demonstrators’ motivations, hopes and goals. “Everybody kind of split off into different groups, then there was four or five separate groups,” he told MTV News about the aftermath. “I was with a group that went down to the Town Hall area, and we held the park there; that’s where I spent the night. It felt like we waited the cops out, but they may have just been teasing us or something.” After dispersing, the Occupy Wall Street website called for an assembly on nearby Canal Street. Around 10 a.m., hundreds of protesters returned to march around the still-police-occupied, privately owned park, claiming their right to occupy the space. On site, MTV News witnessed a few arrests of protesters who tampered with barricades or tried to invade the park; they were forcibly removed by police. “Earlier today, the Supreme Court of New York said they put a temporary injunction saying that we could go back into the park. They also said that the police and the fire department could not stop us,” one protester told MTV News. “We are allowed back in.” Share your thoughts about the Occupy raid in the comments below. ‘Breaking Dawn’ Bridal Gown ‘Moved’ Kristen Stewart

‘I was very flattered I was asked to do it,’ designer Carolina Herrera tells MTV News of Stephenie Meyer’s personal request. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Of all the big reveals in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” that don’t involve the words “sex” and “scene,” fans are dying to see Bella’s wedding dress. It’s been one of the most closely guarded film secrets in recent memory, and rightly so, according to author Stephenie Meyer , who told us the key ingredient to the wedding scene was Kristen Stewart looking “gorgeous” and “unbelievable” in that dress. Thankfully, come Friday, the secret will officially be out. MTV News was lucky enough to get a few details about said dress from legendary fashion designer Carolina Herrera at the film’s premiere Monday night, as she led us through the process for how she ended up with the coveted task. “I was called by Stephenie Meyer. We had to discuss a lot, but I was very inspired by her book and the description of the wedding,” Herrera said. “I was very flattered I was asked to do it; it’s a big scene for me.” Herrera said she loves the romance and the idea of true love as depicted in the book and that she was happy to be a part of such a magical scene. She also spoke to the importance and delicacy in designing wedding dresses in general. “Wedding dresses are different, because you have to know that it’s the most important day in the life of a woman,” she said. “You have to please the bride first of all, and it has to be a secret. I cannot talk about the dress before the groom sees it. I treated [Kristen Stewart’s Bella] like every other bride,” she admitted. “I think [Stewart] was very moved when she tried it on. And that means a lot, because she felt that it was the right one.” Given her pleasant experience with the film’s wedding dress, might Herrera consider designing something for Stewart in real life? “Why not? If she asked me, absolutely,” Herrera said with a smile, but added that Stewart doesn’t need to by styled by anyone. “She knows exactly what she wants to wear. … You can wear anything at21. You don’t need any advice. When you are Kristen Stewart, you can wear whatever you want.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
