Band talks to MTV News backstage at SXSW about their breakout single, which sits at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. By James Montgomery Fun. performs at the 8th Annual MtvU Woodie Festival Photo: C Flanigan/ FilmMagic AUSTIN, Texas — Last week, Fun. became the first rock act in nearly four years to ascend to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, as their breakout hit “We Are Young” overtook Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” as the #1 song in the country. And while that was certainly shocking, this week Fun. proved that their success was no fluke, as “Young” remains atop the charts for a second consecutive week. And when MTV News caught up with the guys backstage at the mtvU Woodie Awards (where they’d subsequently play the song to rapturous applause), they let us in on a little secret: They can’t believe any of this is happening either. “It’s weird. It’s amazing. Actually, the last year, ever since we started making the album Some Nights, has been a daydream that has come true,” frontman Nate Ruess said. “I mean, in 10 years of us doing this, collectively, we never thought we’d have a #1 song. Probably since we were 14 years old, we realized those type of things were impossible.” “We thought we were too old, like, a decade ago,” guitarist Jack Antonoff laughed. And yet, here they are, with the #1 song in the country and an album that only continues to pick up speed. And though it’s certainly a dream come true, Fun. are trying very hard to keep their heads to the ground, and push on to bigger and better things. While still remaining humble, of course. “We’re used to being the bridesmaids, and we always wanted to be the bridesmaids, and I hope we can still continue to be the bridesmaids, it’s who we are,” Ruess said. “Any of this stuff is just some sort of weird icing on a very weird-ass cake.” Then again, there are some definite perks to being #1 … like no longer having to engage in awkward conversations with family members. Because after a decade spent slogging it out in different bands, Fun. have finally earned the approval of the most important of critics: their parents. “The weirdest part is our extended family now feels like we’re doing OK,” Antonoff said. “Forever our entire extended family has been like ‘Are you OK? Maybe there’s a career in management.'” The best of the 2012 Woodie Awards will air Sunday, March 18 at 8 p.m. ET on MTV and mtvU. Eye-catching clip leads up to the release of their Some Nights album and serves notice Fun. may be the breakout band of 2012. By James Montgomery Nate Ruess in the “We Are Young” music video Photo: Fueled By Ramen The first must-see music video of 2012 has already been preceded by both an artful perils-of-peeling teaser and a stirring, acoustic vid seemingly shot adjacent to a bank vault. Oh, and a performance by the “Glee” cast too. The official, real-deal version of Fun.’s “We Are Young” video premiered Monday on MTV.com, and I mention all the lead-up not just because it was rather unprecedented (especially for a band this green; they’ve released just one studio album to date), but because, rarely, if ever, does the final product live up to the advanced hype. Except this time, it does. The latest — and, one can assume, last — version of “Young” is a gorgeous, gasp-inducing thing, a swirling, slow-motion snow globe of imagery that gradually envelops the band (and guest vocalist Janelle Mon

The wranglers of Movieline’s Bad Movies We Love (me and me alone) always dredge up dismissible teen comedies from the early 2000s, in case you haven’t noticed. What’s with them (me)? Wait, I know: Those movies are bad and we (I) love them. Yes! Right! On that note, say hello to Orange County , the breakout vehicle for Movieline pal and Lucky star Colin Hanks, who holds together this funny but aimless romp with the help of Jack Black, a thrilling supporting cast, and a botched Beatles haircut.

‘American Pie’ alum ‘admitted himself for proactive treatment to address health and personal issues.’ By Katie Byrne Seann William Scott Photo: Getty Images Seann William Scott, best known for his breakout role in the “American Pie” franchise, has entered a treatment facility for undisclosed issues. The actor’s reps told People magazine in a statement: “Seann William Scott has voluntarily admitted himself for proactive treatment to address health and personal issues. He appreciates the support of his many fans at this time.” It is unknown where he is being treated or what prompted the decision. Scott was most recently seen in the 2010 Kevin Smith buddy comedy “Cop Out,” starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan. He also recently wrapped production on “Goon,” a hockey comedy written by Judd Apatow regulars Jay Baruchel and Evan Goldberg. Scott stars as Doug, a small-town bouncer who, after physically defending his best friend (Baruchel) at a hockey game, is recruited to play the enforcer for a minor-league team. While Scott has worked steadily since his breakout “Pie” role in the late ’90s, movie audiences will always associate him with the lovably inappropriate Steve Stifler. MTV News caught up with the actor last year while he was promoting “Cop Out” to talk about a potential fourth “American Pie” movie . While he was optimistic about the possibility and said the proposed story line “could be great,” he admitted some reluctance about rejoining the “American Pie” franchise. “I did three of them,” he said. “I had so much fun and loved the character, [but] I don’t want to be known as that character forever. Now I’m realizing that I probably will be known as that character forever.” Share your well-wishes for Seann William Scott in the comments.

Christopher Monger, the Emmy-nominated co-writer of HBO’s ‘Temple Grandin,’ will direct. By Eric Ditzian Daniel Radcliffe Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ Getty Images At the same time that Daniel Radcliffe readies to return to Broadway — previews of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” begin on February 26 — the 21-year-old actor is continuing to plot his post-“Harry Potter” career on the big screen. Radcliffe is now attached to star in “The Amateur Photographer,” an indie comedy from writer/director Christopher Monger, according to Variety . Monger shared writing credits on HBO’s “Temple Grandin,” the biopic that earned him an Emmy nomination and Claire Danes a Golden Globe win. Set in a New England mill town during the 1970s, the movie will follow Radcliffe as a young man who finds in himself an unlikely artistic streak when he begins photographing the “most intimate moments” of the townspeople’s lives, as Variety puts it, and ends up battling “local authorities while bringing a bit of a velvet revolution to the community.” Radcliffe has already wrapped production on his first film following the completion of the “Harry Potter” series. “The Woman in Black” is a thriller in which Radcliffe plays a lawyer who travels to a strange town filled with supernatural secrets. The Brit has also lined up another big-screen project in “All Quiet on the Western Front.” He’s set to play a German soldier during World War I when the production kicks off in the spring of 2012. And come July, he’ll be busy with promotional duties for the final part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” For now, though, Radcliffe is settling in on Broadway. After a month of previews, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” will officially open on March 27. The band recorded sessions with an Australian percussion group for their ‘futuristic’ follow-up to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. By James Montgomery Phoenix’s Thomas Mars Photo: Getty Images The last time we heard from Phoenix, they told MTV News that they were planning to begin work on the follow-up to their breakout Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix album on “the 4th of January — to be precise,” and it looks like they were telling the truth. From the sound of things, the Franco-pop stars are already hard at work on their new album … down in Australia. In an interview backstage at Sydney’s Good Vibrations Festival, Phoenix’s Thomas Mars and Deck D’Arcy told Pedestrian.tv that they were planning to do some recordings for their new album, with an orchestra that … well, let’s let them attempt to explain it: “We’re meeting an orchestra that specializes in, uh, I don’t know how to say it in English,” Mars said. “We’re going to record a bunch of percussionists in [Australian beach town] Byron Bay,” D’Arcy added. “It’s a test, if it works, we’ll probably come back and record something that’s going to be on the album,” Mars said. This is the first bit of solid news we’ve gotten on the band’s next album, which, as they were quick to point out, might be a bit of a departure from the hooky pop of Amadeus. “It sounds like the TGV, it’s a fast French train, it sounds like that,” Mars explained. “It’s very … nostalgic, futuristic. It’s very experimental, it’s very minimal music. … I think because we do a lot of music with drum machines — we blend a lot drum machines and real drums — for us, it’s a way to escape that. There’s something a little frustrating when you do pop music, and drums are, they’re the DNA of our music, because we’d like to go somewhere else, we want to change that DNA.” Related Artists Phoenix
