Liz Phair on How TV Scoring Saved Her Love of Music

Liz Phair has spent 17 years in the recording industry as a saint and a “sellout,” a cavalier grandmaster of articulation whose monotone delivery and Stones-y dispassion on Exile in Guyville , her breakout 1993 album, inspired countless confessional female singer-songwriters. Now, after being declared a pop misfit with her self-titled album in 2003, Phair returns to her fringe roots with Funstyle , a record she released online herself July 3. In it, she discusses her new gig, one that’s already garnered her an ASCAP award: television composer.

Drake: So Far Gone Was A ‘Teaser’ For Thank Me Later

‘I feel like it ended off on a note that just need to be continued,’ Drake tells MTV News of his breakout mixtape. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News Drake’s Thank Me Later finally arrived this week, but rather than standing as a triumphant announcement of the Toronto rapper’s coronation, the collection has turned out be more of a continuation of the narrative started on his previous effort, the highly influential mixtape So Far Gone. The two projects bookmark 23-year-old Drake’s journey into adulthood and the various pitfalls and paranoia that dot his life between successes. He admits it was a conscious decision to pick up on his debut where he left off on his breakout tape. “This album, I definitely wanted it to be consistent with that sound, because I felt like So Far Gone — the story and the sound — it was like a teaser of a story that I wanted to tell and I feel like it ended off on a note that just need to be continued,” Drake told MTV News. “I didn’t want to just make this first album and completely forget about every thing I had just rapped about and start from a new perspective. I really wanted to continue the story. And that’s why I continue with three songs that almost could have been on So Far Gone, which is ‘Fireworks,’ ‘Karaoke,’ and ‘The Resistance.’ “Then life changes and things change,” he continued. “And you go into ‘Over’ and you start hearing ‘Show Me a Good Time,’ ‘Fancy,’ and it just gets bigger and sonically you hear Kanye West and Swizz Beatz and it’s like, ‘Oh, what’s happening?’ And then there’s still little So Far Gone moments in there, like the end of ‘Fancy’ — the beat switches. Then ‘Light Up’ is a real hip-hop moment, and I end with a song called ‘Thank Me Now.’ Even though it’s happy, it’s still me rapping and I’m letting you know the story shall continue.” Earlier this year, Drake revealed he was learning more about himself through his music. The “Find Your Love” star said putting this project together helped him get a firm grasp on his story and who he is — something he still wrestles with at times. “I’m learning about myself. That’s what my music is about,” he told MTV News in January. “I don’t necessarily know all the time who Drake is. I take it day by day and learn as much as I can about myself. As I learn, I choose to share with my fans. I’m just an artist that isn’t scared of being open. My journey, as far as growing into a man, is shared with the people,” he added. “My whole life is like that. I grew up on TV; I’ve always become accustomed to sharing my life with the world. At least now I get to do it in my own words … so I’m not a character. I have a little more grasp on who I am. I’m more eager to share it now: me growing into an artist is me growing into a man.” How would you compare Drake’s debut with his mixtape? Was he more introspective on the tape? Tupac And Biggie Probably Celebrated Birthdays Together, Lil’ Cease Says

‘Their birthdays was real close to each other,’ Junior M.A.F.I.A. member tells MTV News. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Lil’ Cease Photo: MTV News Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G.’s relationship had its obvious downs (especially being at the forefront of that whole “my coast is better than yours” thing that hip-hop was obsessed with in the ’90s), but the homies-turned-rivals had some good times too. Junior M.A.F.I.A. member and Big associate Lil’ Cease said the pair probably got some birthday bashes in before their friendship went south. “I’m sure him and Big celebrated,” Lil’ Cease told MTV News on what would have been Tupac’s 39th birthday Wednesday (June 16). “Their birthdays was real close to each other too.” Indeed, it’s possible the icons popped some bottles together: ‘Pac’s birthday was June 16 and Biggie’s was May 21. Cease said that, regardless of the occasion, Big and ‘Pac would break bread whenever they got the chance. “Whenever ‘Pac wasn’t doing anything in New York, him and Big, they’ll travel. Big went out to ‘Pac’s crib, and Big went and did stuff out with ‘Pac in Cali [or] when ‘Pac was in D.C.” Cease has spent the years since B.I.G.’s death upholding the Brooklyn lyricist’s legacy, but he said his camp continues to show love for ‘Pac on his birthday as well. “We still celebrate that too. We may not celebrate to the level we’ll celebrate for Big, you know, ’cause that’s for his family and his peoples to celebrate. But, you know, we toast it up and we salute him. He’s definitely a soldier in the game, and he’s one of the best to ever do it as well. We show that love no matter what people think,” Lil’ Cease said. “Just ’cause [there] was drama, I mean, you can’t have beef with a dead man.” Share your memories of Tupac and Biggie in the comments below. Glee Creator Promises Television’s First ‘Prom Kings’ in Exchange For GLAAD Award

It was no surprise that Fox’s Glee won a GLAAD award this weekend for best comedy. After all, the breakout series prides itself on embracing sexual diversity, from Rachel Berry’s two-father family to Kurt’s unrequited crush on Finn. So when writer/co-creator Ryan Murphy, himself openly gay, took the stage on Saturday to accept the award at the Hyatt Regent Century Plaza Hotel, he delivered a moving acceptance speech about the value of inclusion before lobbing a few juicy season two spoilers into the audience.

Trina Talks More About Leaked Photos

‘When you see something and you don’t know what it is, I photograph it,’ rapper says of photos of skin ailment. By Jayson Rodriguez Trina Photo: MTV News Racy images of Trina from her stolen cell phone caused quite a stir when they leaked online recently, but it was the photos the Miami rapper took of a skin condition she had that created the most buzz. In those photos, Trina is seen holding up her arm, which had broken out in hives — and more blog comments were directed at those images than the nude photos of her that were made public. “When you see something and you don’t know what it is, I photograph it ’cause I want to know what it was,” the rapper told MTV News. “When I went to the doctor, I didn’t have it, it was gone, ’cause I took [medication] and it went away. I showed it, ’cause I wanted to know what it was. I need you to tell me what I’m allergic to.” Her doctor eventually referred her to an allergist who conducted a series of tests, according to the rapper. Her doctor originally suggested the breakout may have been caused by a food allergy or a reaction to makeup. “We tried to figure out what triggered this breakout,” she said. “It was explained to me that it was Urticaria, which is basically hives.” Stress, she said, might have ultimately been the reason, though she admitted she wasn’t entirely sure why she broke out. Trina is currently hard at work on her fifth album Amazin’, featuring the single “Million Dollar Girl” with Diddy and Keri Hilson. In the meantime, she and her management have called on authorities to investigate the leaked images. “I’m actually having it looked into by the FBI and it’s gonna be a bigger situation than just leaked photos,” she told MTV News. “Hopefully we can deal with the situation and put an end to it.” Related Artists Trina
