Drake, Bun B, Talib Kweli Co-Sign ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010’ Finalist J. Cole

‘J. Cole’s really trying to draw people into his world,’ Drizzy says of the Fayetteville, North Carolina, MC. ‘I respect that a lot.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Drake Photo: MTV News & Docs When J. Cole made his New York City debut at S.O.B.’s in March , the North Carolina MC was greeted not only with a warm response from a sell-out crowd, he received an endorsement from one of the most respected lyricists in the game. After Talib Kweli joined the rising rapper onstage for a rendition of the hit “Get By” — Cole revamps Kweli’s song on his acclaimed ’09 mixtape The Warm Up — the Brooklyn MC dubbed the young star “the future of hip-hop.” That’s just an example of the type of love the Fayetteville rapper and top-five finalist for the title of “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” has been getting from hip-hop’s best and brightest. After turning heads with The Come Up tape, Cole became the first artist to sign to the Jay-Z-helmed Roc Nation, jumping on a track from Hov’s The Blueprint 3, a landmark feat for a rookie MC. Another hip-hop O.G. who’s been impressed by Cole is Bun B, who said he’s anticipating the upstart lyricist’s first LP. “I’m really curious to see what his debut is gonna sound like because he’s making some real strong music right now,” Bun B recently told MTV News. “[His single] ‘Who Dat’ is really killing it and the boy can write.” Although the rapper has yet to drop a major-label album, Bun observed that the MC already has intense fan support on his side. “If you go to a J.Cole show … he’s got a real strong connection. The J. Cole shows are sold-out, everybody in there singing all the lyrics to every song,” Bun said. “When you got that, you good.” In addition to getting respect from hip-hop’s elder statesmen, Cole is inspiring his peers as well. Fellow breakout MC Drake said he’s feeling the Southern lyricist’s thoughtful flow. “I really, really, really like J. Cole. His rhyme structures, the concepts, there’s a little bit of pain in his raps. It’s music, man. It’s deep music,” Drake told MTV News. The Toronto MC added that he can relate to the way Cole strives to create inventive hip-hop. “It’s a kid who is trying to draw you into his world and I think that’s what it takes in rap right now. You can’t just be the generic, [like,] ‘Oh, I rap great,’ but have nothing to say. J. Cole’s really trying to draw people into his world and I respect that a lot because that’s my goal, period.” MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon! J. Cole Is A Top-Five Finalist For ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010’!

Winner will be revealed on MTV2’s ‘Sucker Free Summit’ Sunday at noon. By Shaheem Reid J. Cole Photo: Roc Nation It is here: As promised, the top-five vote-getters in our poll for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” will be revealed this week. These are the artists you guys voted for over the past month, and we can’t express enough how overwhelmed we were by your participation in this project. More than 200,000 votes came in, and they were tallied as of midnight Friday. Keep in mind, the unveiling of the names this week are the top five, but in no particular order. The winner of the “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” as voted on by the MTV News audience, will be revealed Sunday (July 25) at noon on the “Sucker Free Summit.” Chosen One: J. Cole Rising in the Ranks : Jermaine Cole was focused, then lost it, and now his vision is as lucid as ever. The 25-year-old rapper was no ordinary jock in high school, back in his hometown of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Just like fans applaud him when he performs concerts, J. was highly acclaimed by his high school teachers for his academia. Pretty soon, the students began to love him as well. He cut his teeth in freestyle ciphers at football games. Rather than accepting a scholarship locally, he wanted to kill two birds with one stone: go to the media mecca of New York City to pursue music while gaining higher education at the esteemed St. John’s University. But the allure of the bright lights and all the other trappings of the big city put J. in a chokehold. His first two years in school, he partied and chased girls, but he finally snapped out of his haze his junior year, graduating magna cum laude. Cole gained the following he has now by showing off his ever-evolving lyricism with the mixtapes The Come Up and The Warm Up. In between those projects, Cole signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. Like Kanye West, Cole was first introduced to Jay as a producer, but Hov quickly discovered J.’s blue-chip verbal acumen. Cole got the ultimate co-sign, appearing on Jigga’s “A Star Is Born” from Blueprint 3 last year. Now with “Who Dat” rising as the first look from his still-untitled debut LP, the fans are looking at Cole as one to crack the mainstream hard any minute. Early Insight : “Anything I do, whether it’s a freestyle I drop or [a song], man, I feel like I got a lot to prove — not just to people, but to myself,” Cole said. “I’ve been wanting this a long time. I didn’t want to just get a deal. I didn’t want to just put out an album. I want to be here for a long time. I’ve got big goals and big dreams, even beyond where I’m at right now.” Blistering Ballistics : “The mind state of a winner/ When you thinkin’ bout summertime/ I’m thinkin’ ’bout the winter/ When you thinkin’ ’bout breakfast/ I’m heatin’ up my dinner/ I was plottin’ this moment back when y’all was ridin’ spinners/ Now I’m a menace/ God as my witness, with this pen I’m insane, yup/ Hungry like the n—a who ain’t got the taste of fame yet/ Cloud told me, ‘Ain’t you Roc? Well, where the f— yo chain at?’ ” — from Cole’s “Who Dat” Forecast : Cole hasn’t hit the home run smash out of the park yet, but he’s laying the all-too-essential groundwork to establish himself as not just at the top of his weight class as far as lyricism goes, but his live shows have displayed his potential to be one of the great performers in the coming years. Win, lose or draw with his album, Cole is banking on himself. He says there will be no features on his debut, because he has too much to say. MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon! Bun B Says ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010’ Finalist Wiz Khalifa Is A Hit Away From Being A Huge Star

‘He’s made the connection with the people,’ the Houston rapper says of ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC’ nominee. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Bun B Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Top-five “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” pick Wiz Khalifa has been on the grind for a while but appears poised to own the first year of the decade with his buzzy mixtape Kush & OJ. The tatted-up Pittsburgh rapper has been steadily building a loyal fanbase, layering his languid flow over spacey beats and collaborating with fellow “Hottest Breakthrough MC” nominee Curren$y . Among those checking for Wiz this year is Houston O.G. Bun B, who said the rising MC is close to making it really big in the hip-hop game. “I think he’s just really that one song away from actually cracking because he’s made the connection with the people,” Bun B told MTV News about the “Taylor Gang” MC. Bun said that Khalifa’s innovative hustle, like many other young hip-hop artists, really makes use of the outsize marketing power of the Web to score fans. “It used to be you make a song and put it out and then try to connect with [the] people, but now, there’s a whole new D.I.Y. movement going on in independent music, especially in hip-hop,” Bun observed. “These young cats are taking full advantage of the opportunities with YouTube and Twitter and all these other different viral video outlets that the Internet [has] and they’re making it happen.” Bun isn’t the only lyrical heavyweight with Khalifa on his radar. Rick Ross singled out Wiz and his sometime partner-in-rhyme Curren$y for the remix to his lush summer jam, “Super High.” Wiz recently talked to Mixtape Daily about how it feels to have the Miami boss in his corner. “It was a good look for me, because hasn’t been nobody really big, anybody who’s as influential in the game right now as Ross is, saying, ‘I really f—s with Wiz,’ or, like, been seen on camera with me. That was a big power move for the both of us [Curren$y and Khalifa].” MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon! Wiz Khalifa Is A Top-Five Finalist For ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010’!

Winner will be revealed on MTV2’s ‘Sucker Free Summit’ Sunday at noon. By Shaheem Reid Wiz Khalifa Photo: Atlantic It is here: As promised, the top-five vote-getters in our poll for “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” will be revealed this week. These are the artists you guys voted for over the past month, and we can’t express enough how overwhelmed we were by your participation in this project. More than 200,000 votes came in, and they were tallied as of midnight Friday. Keep in mind, the unveiling of the names this week are the top five, but in no particular order. The winner of the “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010,” as voted on by the MTV News audience, will be revealed Sunday (July 25) at noon on the “Sucker Free Summit.” Chosen One: Wiz Khalifa Rising in the Ranks : When Wiz Khalifa talks gang affiliations, it’s not about red or blue. It’s the yellow and black: the colors of the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins of Pittsburgh. The past couple of years for Khalifa have brought constant elevation, not just with his daily fruits and vegetables (the green kind), but in the public’s awareness of him and his artistic acumen. Wiz spent 2007 and ’08 waiting to drop an album on Warner Bros. Records that never materialized. He kept his name in the streets and on the Internet by releasing a slew of mixtapes in the interim, developing a small cult following. Wiz’s fans were eventually dubbed the Taylor Gang , after a group of MCs he was down with in Pittsburgh. Last November, he put out an independent body of work called Deal or No Deal as a sort of declaration that he would make it in the game regardless of whether he had the backing of a major label. Deal spawned the popular “This Plane,” which has been soaring in the past few weeks with a video on MTV Jams and, of course, online. The blogs and Twitter is where Wiz has thrived unlike any MC in his peer group. The Taylors have been very active with their rabid love for Khalifa. His Kush & OJ mixtape was so heavily downloaded and talked about when it came out in April (just in time for 4/20) that it became a trending topic on Twitter and Google. Wiz’s musical appeal lies with his melodies and his lovable stoner mentality. Early Insight : “There’s certain cities where you have that hometown pride. Pittsburgh is just one of those cities where you go hard for anything that’s Pittsburgh,” Wiz explained. “Knowing that everybody’s got my back and knowing that I keep it real with everyone back home, ’cause I still live in Pittsburgh, so people still see me every day. People see me at the gas station, eating wherever everybody’s eating. I sign autographs and take pictures, but I’m still a regular person. I never thought I was going to be that dude — you know, to really put Pittsburgh on the map — but it’s cool.” Blistering Ballistics : “I live life sucka free/ That’s why them n—as you be wit talk down like they don’t f— wit me/ I get money realistically/ And the homies show me love/ Groupies wanna leave the club wit me/ Ain’t nothin’ to a G/ Let your hair blow in the breeze/ Roll some bomb-ass weed.” — from Khalifa’s “The Kid Frankie” Forecast : The tide has definitely turned in Wiz’s favor. His Internet presence is steel-cage solid, and his fanbase has been steadily growing. Now his big-homie peers, such as Rick Ross , have taken notice and are calling him for features. The biggest thing Wiz has on his side right now is freedom. He’s a free agent, making his next album at his leisure and with his own creative vision. Kush & OJ is being heralded as his best project to date, so his follow-up is pivotal. Besides the aforementioned album, Wiz has also been crafting his mixtape Cabin Fever (think more private jets than out in the woods), so the sky can literally be the limit. M.I.A. Breaks Down Her Favorite Tracks On MAYA

Singer singles out ‘Steppin’ Up,’ ‘Teqkilla,’ and praises ‘experimental’ producers Blaqstarr, Rusko. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali M.I.A. Photo: MTV News There’s a whole lot of, well, everything on M.I.A.’s just-released ///Y/&#92 album. So you’d think its creator — or co-creator, since the album was created in collaboration with a cadre of producers that included Blaqstarr, Rusko, Diplo and Switch — would have a difficult time picking out just one moment as her favorite. And you’d be correct. M.I.A. actually has three of them: the discordant drill-pop of “Steppin’ Up,” the stony-drony “Space” and the whacked-out wildness of “Teqkilla.” “I think ‘Steppin’ Up’ is, to me, like the one,” she told MTV News. “If it was up to me, I wouldn’t have even had any extra music on it, I would’ve just had the drills all the way through, but it seemed a bit too experimental at the time. But I’m always pushing [Rusko] to do weird stuff. It’s interesting, I went in to master my record and everyone kept saying, ‘Do you know there’s glitches in this song and that song?’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, and I want to leave it there.’ “Like, on ‘Space,’ the bit where it breaks down and stuff, that’s just done on an iPhone app, and we recorded it back into the computer and it’s made up of all the glitches and stuff,” M.I.A. continued. “It’s not controlled, and because we recorded it at the same time as me singing, it just is as it is. [And that’s why] ‘Teqkilla’ is the most exciting for me as well.” And when you’ve got an album as dissonant and disparate as ///Y/&#92, there’s bound to be a few lunatics responsible. And sure, M.I.A. is one of them, but she also credits a lot of the new album’s sonics to the up-and-coming team of Blaqstarr and Rusko … whom she said were a nice change of pace from Diplo and Switch, the now-established producers she’s worked with in the past (perhaps that’s why Diplo has been so vocal about his displeasure with the album). The whole thing was conceived as a rather madcap art project, and luckily, M.I.A. found two of the maddest men to help her make it. “Blaqstarr sort of helped me kick-start the album. He was living in my house at the time, working on his album [and] it seemed more human, and so I think when I first came down to sketch some ideas down and stuff, he just made me more comfortable singing,” she explained. “And I think Rusko represents the polar opposite … I just really needed that from my producers, who were just into the music and wanted to experiment and explore new ideas and didn’t come to the table with preconceived ideas. It’s different going in with producers I’ve always worked with — like Switch and Diplo and stuff — because they’ve now become mainstream producers and they’re really opinionated with where they’re at with music, you know? And it was good to have someone … who wasn’t opinionated yet and could appreciate music however it came out.” What are your favorite tracks from M.I.A.’s new album? Let us know in the comments! Katy Perry Denies Calling Miley Cyrus ‘Britney Spears All Over Again’

‘Rumor control: I never said sh– bout my girl Miley. I love that ho,’ Perry tweeted. By James Dinh Katy Perry Photo: MTV News Some parents and fans may have issues with Miley Cyrus’ recent image transformation but there’s one person who has no problem with it: Katy Perry. Last week, Life & Style magazine claimed that one of its “spies” at Canada’s MuchMusic Awards heard Katie Perry saying about Cyrus, “she’s Britney Spears all over again. It’s happening right before our eyes.” “No, she’s definitely headed the Britney route,” the source claimed Perry added. “It’s worse. Look at those outfits. It’s bad.” Perry took to Twitter late Friday to clear the air regarding the rumor, insisting that there’s no need for female rivalry in the pop stratosphere. “Rumor control: I never said sh– bout my girl Miley. I love that ho. Mags should stop pitting girls against each other. We all can co-exist!” she tweeted. Whether it’s debunking rumors or getting something off her chest, Perry has long used her Twitter to her advantage. In early June, outlets were quick to jump on a comment Perry made which seemed to be a direct stab at Lady Gaga’s video for “Alejandro.” “Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke,” Perry tweeted. Perry later explained that the tweet wasn’t solely directed at Gaga. “Lately, I’ve just been seeing some things that are kind of like, I don’t know, in my own personal feelings, a little bit like not something I would do, I guess.” she told a French radio station.

Diggy Simmons Doesn’t Owe ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’ Nod To Dad

Vote now to decide the Hottest Breakthrough of the year! By Shaheem Reid Diggy Photo: Atlantic “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” Candidate: Diggy Simmons Diggy Simmons has been around hip-hop his whole life, but the past several months have been the most pivotal for the 15-year-old. His nomination for Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010 was pretty much one of the easiest decisions to come to. Diggy’s checklist pretty much speaks for itself. Heavy Internet following: check. Acclaimed mixtape ( First Flight ): check. Star quality — a fashion sense that mixes young-boy fresh and grown-man sophistication, charismatic and energetic performances, humble heartthrob demeanor off the mic — check. He also has something no one else in his 2010 Breakthrough peer group does, the legendary lineage. Still, ( Diggy doesn’t have to rely on the fact that his father, Reverend Run, is one third of the greatest hip-hop group of all-time, or his uncle is one of the genre’s most heralded executives (Russell Simmons). The teenager is ready to put in work to solidify his spot. “For real though, I wanna thank MTV for even keeping me in mind for such a title,” he said on his blog, Life of a Jet Setter about his nomination. “Though I’ve only been on the rap scene for seven months now, I work very hard on my music day in and day out. If it’s not recording, I’m just vibing and strategizing on what’s next, and how I can improve. If it’s not that, it’s the other way around. So what I’mma need all my Jet Setters to do is go and vote for me as MTV’s Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010!” Simmons also had a special message about his new mixtape opus, First Flight ‘s sequel, Airborne. “This mixtape is for dreamers, lovers, and believers,” he posted on his Twitter page. “I love the way this project has came out as a whole :)” The tape is near completion. “I vibe out to the beat, listen to it,” Diggy explained to MTV News of his writing process. “A lot of people write in their head. But I’m a little more … I don’t wanna say conscious … I wanna make sure I have everything there, so I usually do it over. I text edit on my Mac, write it up. It doesn’t take me too, too long to write a verse. I usually do the chorus before my verses for the fact I have an idea of what I want the whole track to be about. So, you know, I usually do it piece by piece.” Simmons says he finds his muse in the music of some of today’s top-flight MCs. “A lot of my inspirations in music vary from Lupe [Fiasco], to A Tribe Called Quest, to Mos Def,” he explained. “Real lyrical dudes in the game. A lot of the times when you listen to music, you have to focus on what you listen to. You can pick up the wrong inspiration for your music. [I’m] definitely a Jay fan, Nas fan. I’m a Wu-Tang fan. I may [rap] over some Wu-Tang [beats] possibly. Lupe is one of my favorites. That’s just to name a few.” Diggy and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” — and the winner will be decided by you! Yelawolf Becomes ‘Hottest Breakthrough MCs Of 2010’ Contender With Big Boi’s Help

Fans decide our ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010’ — vote now! The winner will be revealed on July 25. By Shaheem Reid Yelawolf Photo: Interscope “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” Candidate: Yelawolf Yelawolf just had a show in his hometown of Gadsden, Alabama, and was so moved by what he saw, he was at a loss for words. Luckily, he had rhymes instead. “You had these white boys with these big-ass trucks with mud all over them,” he recalled. “D-boys from the North Side projects rolling up on dunks. You had dune buggies, bikes. It was everything I’ve been saying coming to form.” Wolf has been toiling underground for years, signing with legendary record exec Kawan “KP” Prather in 2007. He went through getting dropped by Sony Records and being snubbed by Def Jam only to heat up so large, Interscope Records picked him up earlier this year. Wolf’s energetic live shows and his performance style — which fuses hip-hop and rock — set him apart. Of late, he’s gotten a major co-sign from Big Boi, appearing on the Andre 3000-produced Sir Lucious Left Foot track “You Ain’t No DJ.” “That was actually my debut feature on a distributed project with a major artist,” said Wolf, who has been on independent projects for Juelz Santana and Slim Thug. “That sh– is jamming. As soon as I found out, I was rubbing my hands together as to when I could work with Outkast. I’ve been with KP since ’07, waiting on that moment.” On his upcoming debut, Trunk Muzik: 0-60, Yela got a chance to work with another ATL superstar: Gucci Mane. “I wanted to take advantage of the moment,” he explained of working with Gucci on the yet-untitled track. “I was like, ‘Let’s go do an intro together. Let’s go intro this bitch and vibe out like MCs. Let’s do this bitch.’ That’s what we did. Gucci’s rock and roll, balls-to-the-wall hip-hop. Straight Southern b-boy rap sh–. I’ve always been a fan of Gucci’s style. I was a huge Crunchy Black fan. Even like the Nutcracker from Group Home, Shawty Lo. Very broken-down, simple rap style. I was excited to have him. It made the record. The record was already crazy; he just took it to that next level.” Wolf’s Trunk Muzik: 0-60 is an enhancement of his mixtape Trunk Muzik. “We picked the 0-60 title because, for one, we didn’t want to alienate any of the new fans we were making,” he described. “We felt it was too soon to step outside of anywhere we were. With Trunk Muzik, we created a sound and feeling we didn’t want to move from. We called it Trunk Muzik: 0-60 because it represents how fast we been moving since we been doing these shows and got a deal with Interscope. Everything is moving. We wanted to mirror that with the music. Picking five of the fan favorites from Trunk Muzik and putting on seven new ones. “I’m never scared what people are gonna think about music that I make,” Yela added. “I just go in there and make music that sounds good to me. And it sounds good to my crew. I just trust my crew. If it leaves the studio and we’re happy with it, that’s what matters the most to us. Because if we’re happy with it, then I can perform it. As long as I can perform that record, I can translate the energy I need to get somebody to understand it. I’ve worked so hard to get to this moment. I’m just soaking it up, taking it day by day, trying not to let it go to my head. I just love my fans and the fans I’m making. My fans are like no other. Completely original people.” Yelawolf and 19 other up-and-coming MCs are in the running to become MTV News’ “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” — and the winner will be decided by you! Wiz Khalifa Calls Rick Ross’ ‘Super High’ Remix ‘A Blessing’

‘It was a good look for me,’ Wiz tells Mixtape Daily of Ross’ co-sign. By Shaheem Reid Wiz Khalifa The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Wiz Khalifa and his partner Curren$y aligned forces with Rick Ross for “Super High (Sativa Remix),” and the Spiff TV-directed viral video came out this week. “That was a blessing, dude,” Wiz said about the collaboration. “Ross just kept it G, dawg. He seen my movement, he seen Curren$y’s movement. He recognized what we do together, but he recognized us as individuals as well as a team. He reached out in a real way. Spiff [TV] called us. I think he reached out to Spitta first. Then Spiff, he reached out to me. I was still on another leg of my tour. So as soon as I got done with the last leg of my tour, soon as I got home, I went straight to the studio and knocked out the verse, sent it to Ross. He was like, ‘I love it. I’m flying you out next week. We doing the video.’ ” “Yeah, you know, I’m VP, A&R over at Maybach Music Group,” said Spiff, who has known Wiz for years. “Ross called me and said he’s putting together a remix and he wants Wiz and Curren$y.
