Waka Flocka Flame Says Legal Issues Make Him A ‘Stronger Man’

‘A lot of situations I probably put myself into,’ he tells Sway during ‘RapFix Live.’ By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Waka Flocka Flame Photo: Jonathan Goldner / MTV News Waka Flocka Flame hit MTV News’ “RapFix Live” on Wednesday and sat down for a candid interview with Sway Calloway that covered a range of topics, including his breakthrough success and troubles with the law. The ATL trap star is still pushing his debut album, Flockavelli, debuted his new video for “Grove St. Party” on MTV Jams and just released a new mixtape called Benjamin Flocka. Hits like “Hard in the Paint” and “No Hands” helped Waka gain mainstream recognition beyond the Southern states, but he said staying true to himself is the secret to his and labelmate Gucci Mane’s success. “Honestly, we stayed ourself,” Waka told MTV News. “We wasn’t scared to let people know our personality. Answered the questions with a real answer. We always say, ‘Hey, bruh, just keep it official.’ Our whole thing was to be 100 about the situation.” Despite their inroads in the music industry, legal issues have shadowed Waka Flocka and some of the company he keeps. Last December, Waka had his home raided by authorities before turning himself in the next month. Members of his entourage were involved in a shooting that involved his tour bus in February in North Carolina. Most recently, Gucci Mane was arrested for allegedly pushing a woman out his SUV while it was still in motion. Although some people think rappers are under extra scrutiny, Waka isn’t subscribing to that school of thought when it comes to his entanglements. “That’s just another standpoint of view,” Waka said. “I don’t think we’re being targeted. I think God do a lot of stuff to let you know. … It always stop you in your tracks. That’s just situations God put you through so you be a stronger man, ’cause it didn’t kill us, it just made us stronger. It’s just to let you know like, ‘Boy, you doing good, why would you go over here and … ,’ you know what I’m saying?” Waka admitted that it was his own actions that put him in some of his well-documented predicaments. “A lot of situations I probably put myself into,” he said. “So you just learn from your mistakes.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Waka Flocka Flame Related Artists Waka Flocka Flame

His impact on West Coast hip-hop could not be overstated, as Nate helped pioneer the G-Funk sound with his deep, soulful voice on Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle and his breakthrough collaboration with Warren G, “Regulate.” Nate was feature on a 1995 episode of “Yo! Nate cited Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson as his idols. When Fab Five asked how he makes his smooth, soulful sound work so well with the rest of Tha Dogg Pound’s rough and raw delivery, he acknowledged the differences, but said they shared the same message. “It’s something different, what we doing, but it’s the truth [that] we are saying,” Nate said. “If you can relate to it, it’s always going to be the truth, and if it got that Dogg Pound flavor, it’s always going to be a tad more.” Send your well-wishes and condolences by leaving your comments below. Eternal Youth Potion Discovered

Harvard University researcher Ronald A. DePinho has discovered a way to reverse age degeneration for the first time. His experiments on mice have demonstrated that you can return individuals to a younger state, with new growth on brain and improved fertility. While scientists knew about the role of telomerase—an enzyme that adds DNA sequence repeats at the end of chromosomes—in body decadence and experiments were made with extremely simple organisms, this is the first time that this breakthrough has been achieved in complex mammals. While it's not human testing, this discovery could be an amazing weapon to fight Alzheimer and other degenerative diseases. According to DePinho: We wanted to know: If you could flip the telomerase switch on and restore telomeres in animals with entrenched age-related disease, what would happen? Would it slow down aging, stabilize it, or even reverse it? It was akin to a Ponce de Le

Far East Movement Thank Fans For ‘Like A G6’ Success

MTV News informs the Los Angeles band that their hit single has achieved double-platinum status. By James Dinh Far East Movement Photo: MTV News Far East Movement must be feeling pretty fly right about now. Not only has their club anthem “Like a G6” conquered the Billboard Hot 100 once again, but the song has also reached double-platinum status. MTV News caught up with the electro-rap group, and they thanked fans for their hugely successful debut single. “Whoa. We just found out on MTV News that we hit double-platinum on ‘Like a G6,’ ” Kev Nish told MTV News. “Thank you. We’re grateful to that. That means a lot of people across America are feeling fly and like a G6 and getting slizzard, so thank you guys.” Back in September, the quartet spoke to MTV News about the inspiration behind their breakthrough single. “A G6 is not a Gatorade flavor. It’s not a car, convertible, four-door. It’s not a watch,” Nish explained. “But Drake, Drake talks about having G4 pilots on deck, so we said, ‘What’s flyer than a G4?’ Of course, it would be a G6.” After the band recorded the party anthem, which features the Cataracs and Dev, they immediately went on tour. Without having time in between, FM put the track on a mixtape and uploaded it online. Little did they know that “G6” would spawn legions of fans online. “We came back about three months later, and on YouTube, we had, like, a million hits, so it seems like the people were speaking,” Prohgress said. Far East Movement got started in 2003, but it wasn’t until this year that they released their major-label debut, Free Wired. The LP was released October 12 and features a slew of collaborations with Snoop, Lil Jon and One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder. Have you downloaded “Like a G6” yet? Tell us in the comments! Katy Perry Brings Candyfornia To ‘Today’

Chart-topping singer hits New York’s Rockefeller Center with Gummi Bears and lollipops. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry performs on “Today” Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images A bedazzled Katy Perry made a grand entrance on “Today” Friday (August 27) morning, descending to the stage in a cotton candy cloud that brought to mind the cover for her new album Teenage Dream and the candy-coated video for her chart-topping song “California Gurls.” Perry opened her set for the show’s summer concert series with that ode to the Golden State, and the Candyfornia theme didn’t end there. The entire stage was a tribute to sugary sweetness, featuring giant Gummi Bears and lollipops. “Well, I wanted to bring something sweet and it’s so early in the morning and lots of people are cranky … a spoonful makes everyone feel better,” Perry said of her candy-coated stage. That desire to bring a little sweetness to her fans’ lives also explains why she added a cotton-candy scent to Teenage Dream ‘s CD booklet. “I had this idea to have the actual booklet of the CD scented, especially since the picture is me on a cotton candy cloud,” she said. Later, she donned a tutu and busted out Teenage Dream ‘s title track, which is her latest single. In between songs, the singer signed autographs for her wigged-out fans, including people who camped out in the middle of Manhattan to see their favorite pop star in the flesh. Perry sent them bedding as a thank-you present. She was also asked about her very own teenage dream — her fianc

Katy Perry, Fantasia Look To Unseat Eminem On Charts

Perry’s Teenage Dream expected to take top spot from Recovery. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: Chelsea Lauren/ FilmMagic It’s been a long, record-setting summer for Eminem’s smash Recovery , but Slim Shady’s chart dominance could be challenged next week by two strong women with something to prove. Em’s held the #1 spot on the album charts for seven of the nine weeks Recovery has been in stores, with its other two weeks spent at #2. But he could be pushed down to the #3 position next week thanks to the debuts of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream and Fantasia’s Back to Me , according to a Billboard . Citing unnamed “industry prognosticators,” the trade pub put Perry on track to sell between 170,000 and 200,000 copies of Teenage Dream by the end of this week’s reporting period on Sunday (August 29). Fantasia, meanwhile, is on target for a #2 bow and sales in the 120,000-140,000 range. This week, Eminem had little major competition, and he was able to hold on to the #1 slot with 116,000 sales of Recovery . For Perry, the debut would easily best the chart arrival of her breakthrough 2008 effort One of the Boys , which debuted on the charts and peaked at #9 with 47,000 sales; it went on to sell more than one million copies in the U.S. and seven million worldwide. Perry is looking to both beat the sophomore slump and cement her status as one of the world’s pop icons. A #2 debut would also be a high-water mark for Fantasia, who has struggled through a difficult period lately that included a suicide attempt and tabloid headlines regarding her relationship with a man in the midst of a divorce. If the former “American Idol” champ snags the #2 spot it would mark the best chart debut of her career, though her previous album, Fantasia , sold 133,000 copies when it reached #19 spot in 2006. While numbers were not available at press time, it’s even possible that Slim Shady could get a bit of a run from Usher, whose new EP, Versus , also dropped this week.
