Katy Perry Brings Candyfornia To ‘Today’

Chart-topping singer hits New York’s Rockefeller Center with Gummi Bears and lollipops. The entire stage was a tribute to sugary sweetness, featuring giant Gummi Bears and lollipops. “Well, I wanted to bring something sweet and it’s so early in the morning and lots of people are cranky … a spoonful makes everyone feel better,” Perry said of her candy-coated stage. That desire to bring a little sweetness to her fans’ lives also explains why she added a cotton-candy scent to Teenage Dream ‘s CD booklet. “I had this idea to have the actual booklet of the CD scented, especially since the picture is me on a cotton candy cloud,” she said. Later, she donned a tutu and busted out Teenage Dream ‘s title track, which is her latest single. In between songs, the singer signed autographs for her wigged-out fans, including people who camped out in the middle of Manhattan to see their favorite pop star in the flesh. Perry sent them bedding as a thank-you present. She was also asked about her very own teenage dream — her fianc

‘California Gurls’ Director Wanted Katy Perry In A ‘Sugary Sweet Paradise’

‘Since the song has become this summer anthem, it really invokes strong visuals,’ Matthew Cullen says of avoiding a beachy look. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in the “California Gurls” video Photo: Capitol As soon as he heard Katy Perry’s summertime smash “California Gurls,” director Mathew Cullen knew exactly what he didn’t want to include in his treatment for the video: sun, surf or anything that had to do with summer. And luckily, Perry was thinking the same thing. “The lyrics were so literal that when I pitched it, I said, ‘Look, I want to so something that’s a metaphor for what the song’s about,’ and I guess it was something different from what the other directors were pitching her,” Cullen told MTV News. “It was a concept that really stood out for her. Because I think, automatically, since the song has become this summer anthem, it really invokes strong visuals. And I just wanted to do something a little different.” So Cullen, Perry and a whole host of creative types (including surrealist Will Cotton, famous for his candy-coated landscapes, who served as the artistic director on the video) descended on Los Angeles for a very hectic three-day shoot, where they created “Candyfornia,” a fictional land filled with a whole lot of sugary set pieces, mean-spirited Gummi Bears and plenty of frosting. “What really stood out for me is the idea of California as this sugary sweet paradise, so Candyfornia is this place where desire can always be fulfilled, but where pleasure can turn dark. The kind of place where Gummi Bears aren’t your friends,” laughed Cullen, the founder of Los Angeles-based production company Motion Theory. “I also tried to inject some California iconography into the landscape: the Hollywood Hills made of ice cream, Sunset Boulevard as Sundae Boulevard, the Capitol Records building as pancakes and the Walk of Fame as a gingerbread path.” And while folks have been marveling at both Candyfornia and Perry’s cupcake-enhanced bras since the “Gurls” video premiered on Tuesday, there are two key moments that really have jaws dropping: Perry’s nude scene on a cotton-candy cloud and those chest-mounted frosting cannons she sports at clip’s end. Sadly, Cullen can only take credit for one of those. “The nude scene, yeah, we shot that on a closed set. Well, at least it was a closed set while she was getting on the cotton-candy cloud,” he laughed. “And though we had lots of strategically placed cotton candy, let’s just say we had to add even more in post[-production]. “[The cannons] were actually Katy’s idea. She wanted to have fun with it, and so we did it,” he continued. “We got it in two takes. I was surprised. We shot it at the end of the first day, and it had everybody rolling on the floor. She was so great to work with. A total pro, and really into it.” Even though he set out to make a video that contained absolutely no beach scenes, even Cullen will admit that he’s won over by the song’s summer-friendly message: that California Gurls really are the greatest in the world. Then again, he might not be the most impartial guy. “I am a native Angelino, so I do think that California Girls definitely have something to them,” he laughed. “Though I’m a bit biased, since I’ve been here my entire life.” What is your favorite party of the “California Gurls” video? Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Video: So Sweet It Hurts

The queen of ‘Candyfornia’ battles Snoop Dogg in a cavity-inducing fantasy world. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol As if the electric-blue wig , bedazzled bikini and chest-mounted frosting cannons didn’t give it away, let me be the first to tell you that Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” video is just slightly over-the-top. Like, all the way over it … with whipped cream and cherry on top. Yes, the “Gurls” video — which premiered Tuesday (June 15) on MTV.com — is three minutes and 54 seconds of deliciously gaudy, delightfully ridiculous eye candy, a sugar-coated overload of confectionery gone haywire, cotton-candy clouds, gingerbread paths and Gummi Bears with bad attitudes. It is bright and brash and very likely to give you a toothache. Like the song, there is nothing understated about it. Directed by Mathew Cullen of the creative group known as Motion Theory, “California Gurls” re-imagines the Golden State as “Candyfornia,” a magical, cavity-inducing land where Sunset Boulevard becomes “Sundae Blvd” and the Hollywood sign rests on a whipped-cream mountain (the iconic Capitol Records building is also slyly inserted, constructed entirely of what appear to be vanilla wafers). Perry is the queen, parading down pastoral candy landscapes (which resemble the surrealist, saccharine work of artist Will Cotton , if you want to get deep about it). All appears to be well until Snoop Dogg — who plays the evil Sugar Daddy — begins to pull strings, in an attempt to wrest control of Candyfornia away from Queen Katy. From there, we have a battle between good and evil, as Perry attempts to free her Candyfornia cohorts from a variety of sweet traps (bubblegum, Jell-O, etc.) while Snoop readies his army of loyal Gummi Bears for the final showdown. Of course, there’s also time for KP to ascend into the heavens, strip naked, suggestively nibble cotton candy and perform a dance routine with her Gurls — because what kind of pop video would this be if there weren’t? Eventually, she climbs to Snoop’s castle to do battle, vanquishing him and his minions by firing frosting from her chest, in a scene that plays out in gratuitous slow-motion, basically for the heck of it. And then, at the clip’s end, Snoop is buried up to his neck in sand, surrounded by Perry and her Gurls. Not surprisingly, everything ends happily ever after … the Queen of Candyfornia is returned to her throne, the evil Sugar Daddy is banished, and dentists around the world rejoice, dreaming of the business this super-saccharine video will surely create. Hayden Panettiere Sweet Little Person Hotness

I’ve made a lot of jokes about Hayden Panettiere’s new haircut saying things like I didn’t know she played softball or calling her a pre pubescent boy, but I have to say she actually looks pretty good in these pictures. I’m impressed. She looks nothing like a boy and softball chicks normally look like they’re pulling a tractor trailer when they wear heels so that’s out. She’s cute, I’d like to bounce her on my knee and feed her Gummi Bears . That wasn’t meant to sound creepy, I just like Gummi Bears and want to share them with Hayden. more pictures of Hayden Panettiere here
