Amy Winehouse Tribute Steals Show At ‘VH1 Divas’

‘VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul’ featured performances by Kelly Clarkson, Florence Welch, Jessie J and many others. By Jocelyn Vena Jennifer Hudson,Kelly Clarkson and Mary J Blige perform onstage during VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul Photo: Larry Busacca/ Getty Images NEW YORK — Glittering clothes , big voices and sassy songs about love, loss and everything in between ruled the night during “VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul.” The concert was filled with booty-shaking, sing-along performances from Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Florence and the Machine , Jennifer Hudson, Jill Scott, Jessie J and others, who rocked the Hammerstein Ballroom for the show, which aired Monday night (December 19) on VH1. With an assist from the night’s house band the Roots, it all kicked off with Hudson, Clarkson and Blige channeling the Supremes for “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” before launching into a medley of their own tracks, “Spotlight,” “Real Love” and “Since U Been Gone.” The performance set the tone for the night, which not only paid homage to the women in the room, both legendary and up-and-coming, but also the cities that birthed some of the most soulful songs in music history, including Chicago, London, Detroit, Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee. Through the night, divas from all walks of life, including Erykah Badu, Estelle, Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan, Martha Reeves, Marsha Ambrosius and Ledisi, as well as a few divos (Boyz II Men and Travie McCoy), sang some of the biggest hits from soul music’s lush history. The set list included a sampling of tracks like “Nowhere to Run” by Martha and the Vandellas, “Walking on Broken Glass” by Annie Lennox, “I’ll Take You There” by the Staple Singers and “Ain’t Nobody” by Khan herself. When the cities themselves weren’t being honored, the divas were, with solo performances that demonstrated the ladies’ killer vocal prowess. Florence Welch, Clarkson, Sharon Jones, Jessie J, Scott, Hudson and Blige each took the stage to give some shine to their own tracks and pop styles, proving that soul music is a genre that is still alive and well. The Amy Winehouse tribute was the culmination of the night. Although “VH1 Divas” was all about the living performers who belted out songs at the concert, the presence of one diva gone too soon was certainly felt. Instead of focusing on the loss suffered when the British songstress died over the summer, the show focused on a celebration of her music. “What’s up New York?” the tribute’s MC, Nas, asked the room. “When the legendary Amy Winehouse sang about me in her song ‘Me and Mr. Jones,’ I was so honored. Amy Winehouse was my true soul sister.” The two worked together on her Lioness: Hidden Treasures track, “Like Smoke.” “I’m here to honor a woman who had enough soul to last a lifetime,” he added. The presence of his “home girl” was felt in the room thanks to her game-changing music as reimagined by Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings (the latter of whom worked with her on her Back to Black album), Florence Welch and Wanda Jackson. The medley included her soul-killing breakup track “Back to Black” and her sassy anthem “You Know I’m No Good.” Related Artists Amy Winehouse Kelly Clarkson Jennifer Hudson Florence + the Machine Mary J. Amy Childs Assumes The Position

Here’s my new favorite busty British chick Amy Childs taking a tour of Hollywood stars homes in LA yesterday while filming what I’m guessing is a reality TV show about her and her massive breasts. I’d watch that. Anyhow, this chick is really starting to get to me. Giant cleavage falling out and tight latex-like pants are kind of my thing. I think it’s about time she take a tour of one of the swimming pools at the Playboy mansion… The one with all the sluts.

Foster The People, Florence Welch Pick Best Of 2011

As MTV unveils our year-end favorites, we ask ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ rockers and Florence and the Machine frontwoman for theirs. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Foster The People’s Mark Foster and Cubbie Fink Photo: MTV News In 2011, we saw new acts break through to the big time and formerly new ones continue on their paths toward superstardom. We welcomed the likes of the Weeknd and Frank Ocean to the party and watched with pride as Drake and Adele marched on to greatness. But of all the year’s brand-new stars, few broke out to the degree that L.A. rock trio Foster the People did, thanks in no small part to the success of their smash hit “Pumped Up Kicks,” #7 on MTV’s Best Songs of 2011 . Of all the returning stars, none returned with the power and grace of Florence and the Machine, who wowed critics and fans with their sophomore album, Ceremonials, and stirring single “Shake It Out.” So, as MTV looks back on 2011 , we’re reaching out to a host of acts — who not only dominated the past 12 months, but also came to define them — to get their take on the year in music. And who better to ask than Foster and Florence, two artists who did both … and then some? We spoke to both bands about their favorite songs, albums and artists of 2011, and the rather diverse range of answers sort of sums up the year rather nicely. After all, outside of Adele, was there anything we could all agree on? “I’d say probably my favorite album of the year is Bon Iver’s new album , and I hope he sweeps the Grammys, because the guy’s just killing it right now,” Foster’s Cubbie Fink said. “We’re competing with him!” frontman Mark Foster laughed. “And I hope he wins!” Fink said. “I’ve listened to that album on repeat all year. It’s really amazing.” As far as their favorite artist? Well, Iver ranks pretty high, but of all the acts they listened to this year, none resonated with Foster the People quite like Swedish electro act Little Dragon. “They’ve been a favorite band of mine for a while, and we’ve got to play with them a couple times this year and see them live in a bunch of different settings,” Foster’s Mark Pontius said. “I’m always just so inspired by them live, and the new record that came out this year [ Ritual Union ] is pretty fantastic as well.” Florence Welch was inspired this year by the magnificent murk of Canadian R&B producer/singer Abel Tesfaye, better known as the Weeknd. “My favorite song of the year was the Weeknd, ‘High for This,’ ” she said. “That was this year, [right]? I’ve been obsessively listening to that song for the past few days on repeat. I must’ve listened to it about 700 times.” Of course, when it comes to her favorite artists of 2011, Welch kept things close to home, choosing a pair of British bands — one of which didn’t even release an album this year. “I’m really into this English band called the Alpines; I think they’re really good,” she said. “And I’ve just heard some of the Maccabees’ new stuff, and I’m so excited about their new record coming out, because from the first song I’ve heard, it just sounds amazing. I’m such a big fan of theirs, so I’m really looking forward to that.” All this week, watch “AMTV” on MTV every day at 8 a.m. ET for our Best of 2011 lists. Then, come to MTVNews.com at 5 p.m. as we reveal our top picks of the year! Yeah, Baby: Austin Powers Reportedly Headed to Broadway

Just when you thought that Hollywood had run out of hit movies to adapt into Broadway musicals , word is spreading that Mike Myers is in discussions to translate his ’60s spy spoof series for the stage. But just how involved will the franchise creator and star be in Austin Powers: The Musical — especially when he is reportedly busy writing a fourth film installment for the British secret agent?

Meryl Streep Covers Vogue at Age 62

With 16 Oscar nominations (two wins) and 25 Golden Globe nods (two wins), Meryl Streep has a resume no one in Hollywood can match. Seriously, she’s peerless. She can now add Vogue cover girl to her resume, too. Gracing the front of the January 2012 issue of the ultimate fashion bible, Streep dazzles at age 62 – making her the oldest cover model in the publication’s history. “I was joking with some of the ladies earlier,” Streep, promoting her predictably acclaimed turn as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady , tells the magazine. “I told them I was probably the oldest person ever to be on the cover of Vogue .” Streep, who played a version of Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour in The Devil Wears Prada , hasn’t just defied the odds and outdated limitations for women in Hollywood. With her legacy growing by the decade, she’s redefined them. When she turned 40, she said, “I remember turning to my husband [sculptor Don Gummer] and saying, ‘Well, what should we do? Because it’s over.'” The reason she thought that? Streep reveals that she received three offers to play witches in films as soon as she hit 40. “Once women passed childbearing age … they could only be seen as grotesque on some level,” she surmises, “as women whose usefulness had passed.” But different, and often richer roles have followed in spades. One recent example is her role in the middle-aged, post-divorce sex comedy It’s Complicated . “In the period of Silkwood (1983), It’s Complicated could never have been made, with a 60-year-old actress deciding between her ex-husband and another man.” “With a 40-year-old actress it would never have been made!” she says. She was thrilled to play British prime minister Thatcher, despite significant political differences with the leader: “With any character I play, where she is me is where I meet her. It’s very easy to set people at arm’s length and judge them,” she explains. “Yes, you can judge the policies and the actions … but to live inside that body is another thing entirely. It’s humbling and infuriating, just like it is to live in your own body.” “Because you recognize your own failings, and I have no doubt that she recognized hers.”
