Agyness Deyn On London-Set Pusher Remake And Her Move From Modeling To Acting

“It’s not just another movie about drugs and gangsters,” British model-turned-actress Agyness Deyn says of Pusher , Luis Prieto’s London-set remake of Nicolas Winding Refn ‘s 1996 Danish crime drama, about a drug dealer named Frank (Richard Coyle) who’s about to have the worst week of his life. In her second feature film credit Deyn plays Frank’s heroin-addicted girlfriend Flo, radiating with a unique combination of sensual maturity and naivete that makes Flo’s devotion, and Frank’s downward spiral, all the more tragic. It’s a bold career move for Deyn, the first and biggest dramatic role in her transition from modeling to acting. The 29-year-old made her feature debut as Aphrodite, goddess of love, in 2010’s Clash of the Titans — a small role in a big film, but an experience that Deyn says “indicated to me that this is exactly what I wanted to do.” How is the onetime runway superstar adjusting to her new life of script readings and auditions? Deyn rang Movieline for a chat about Pusher , how changes to the remake alter Flo’s story — and by extension, the film’s central relationship — and her ongoing pursuit of a second career in acting. The film is set in England rather than Denmark – what do you think bringing it to London adds or changes to the story? It’s really great because Luis [Prieto] the director is Spanish, so that added this really amazing element – it was like having new eyes. Even me living in London for a long time, you view it in a certain way. And when someone else shows it to you it’s like, whoa — it’s so different, you know? I think that was a really great thing about it. Also the way Luis incorporates it, all this nightlife — the clubs, it was like another character, another element. It was the heartbeat of the film and pacing with the music, and altogether it was incredible. Frank’s life changes over the course of just a week; he goes from this fairly glamorous existence as a drug dealer to seeing his entire world come crashing down in a matter of days. But there’s a slight difference between this version and the original in terms of Frank and Flo’s relationship; Flo is a stripper, but not a prostitute, and they’re in a relationship even if that’s shaky at best. Definitely. The biggest difference is in Flo’s involvement, and that was really great as well because I didn’t actually watch the original because Luis asked us not to. But I’m glad that people tell me that she’s more relatable, which is great because it takes it to the next level. Women tell me, ‘I was on Flo’s journey with her,’ and for me it’s not just another movie about drugs and gangsters. Flo is dealing with kind of the worst boyfriend ever. He’s preoccupied with his drug deals gone wrong and these frenemies that will probably try to kill him, but even before that he’s emotionally closed-off to her. I’d imagine there are more than a few women who’d relate to Flo’s arc and the decision she eventually comes to. That’s what I loved about her, you could really relate to her in that way. You just want to pick her up and carry her away, don’t you? We don’t really know Frank and Flo before the events of the film, like how they met, or when. What sort of back story did you folks work out to flesh out the roots of their relationship? Going in the club, being on the scene. I feel like they really do love each other, it’s just that there are barriers, they keep on missing each other. There’s a beautiful shot of you at the end, which I won’t give away, which I feel is slightly more optimistic than the original. What’s your take on that, would you agree? I feel like she’s not going to just stand for it, she feels like she’s been betrayed. I feel like she is like that. She’s a dreamer, she’s a romanticist, she’s a mover — she wants to live life and experience things and push the limit and I think that’s what she’s doing. ‘No, this isn’t okay for me — so I’m out of here,’ you know? Pusher comes along at an interesting point in your acting career, after over a decade spent being very successful in the modeling world. Was acting a longtime goal of yours? I just studied it at college, and I didn’t really know what I wanted to do and I kind of fell into modeling. I had a 12-year job on my plate, which was amazing, but what I did realize while modeling was that I did want to do a job that was creative. I really enjoyed creating a character when I was modeling, and I was like, wow — I can take that to the next level and create a character in a movie. So that was the evolution of what I wanted to do. Has it been difficult to decide on which projects to take, how careful to be in your choice of roles as you carve out your acting career? I’m a young actress, starting a career — I read scripts, I audition, and I get it or I don’t get it. I don’t expect that because I was successful in one field that I will then get a ride of passage into another. I know that I’ve got to work hard and deliver the goods, and I’ve got to do it, and show up. I liked Pusher and I especially liked how English and gritty it is, because I like to watch that. So I auditioned for it, and it was in their hands whether I did it or not. Before Pusher you appeared in Clash of the Titans , which was of course a blockbuster-scale film. How would you compare and contrast your experience on those sets, those being two of your first films? Clash of the Titans , I played such a small role but it was a perfect opportunity to get my foot into acting and in a huge way, because it was a big studio movie. It had incredible actors, like Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes, and watching them at work it felt more like an observational job, rather than a hands-on job. It was so great to see actors like that working. It was like, this is how they do it! And the freedom that they had, it was so inspiring to watch. It really indicated to me that this is exactly what I wanted to do. Then with Pusher it was like incredible — it was low budget, and family-oriented. It felt safe and exciting and driven, and creative in so many ways. What did you learn about yourself, or even about yourself as a performer, from your work on Pusher ? I think it was that I was part of a bigger picture, you know? Telling the story, being part of that. And also to have fun; I learned so much from Richard Coyle, who played Frank, about dedication and commitment, pushing the boundaries. From Bronson Webb who plays Tony I learned that you can have so much fun in it; he’s so fun, such a live-wire. All these different elements that work — I learned so much from everyone in that way, my eyes and ears open. Do you feel that there are misconceptions about models who turn actors that you’d like to prove wrong? I don’t really want to prove anyone wrong. I just want to do a job, and do well at that. Personally as well, I want to to a job to the best of my abilities and learn and grow, and I think that if I can do that, I’ll feel happy. But I don’t want to make anyone wrong. I suppose there will be people that have their views, no matter what happens. So if I just do what I’m doing, then that’s the most important thing for me. Pusher is in limited release. Daniel Day-Lewis Explains Lincoln’s Surprising Voice

A bit high-pitched and shrill, the few audiences that have seen Lincoln ahead of its World Premiere next month at AFI Fest may have been surprised by the voice of America’s 16th President as played by Daniel Day-Lewis . The two-time Oscar-winner made a rare public appearance speaking before a small audience presented by Time Magazine in New York Thursday. The actor, who appeared along with Steven Spielberg , spoke in his native British accent, which was in audible contrast to his latest on-screen character. Many assume Lincoln spoke in a blaring baritone, though Lewis explained that that myth is likely untrue. “Well you look for the clues, as with any aspect of the work,” he said of finding the voice. “You begin with the places that would have made a huge difference in his life. Kentucky, Indiana and Illinois, and the counties that he came from. There are some early recordings, but no contemporary recordings — lucky for me, so no one can say positively that it’s not what he sounded like,” said Lewis as quoted in THR . He surmised that the Civil War President’s pitch aided him and his oratory skills in reaching a higher number of people in an era well ahead anything resembling public address systems. “There are also a number of contemporary accounts about the quality of his voice,” Day-Lewis said. “And I’m inclined to think that having had a voice that was intended to be in the higher register, tended to be placed more in the head tones, that helped him reach a greater number of people in his public speaking. Stump speaking was such a huge part of their lives, they spoke sometimes for two hours or more without notes, at that time regularly. And beyond that, I suppose it really was just an act of imagination.” Lincoln centers on the period after Lincoln’s re-election in 1864 in the months leading up to his death in April of the following year, when he struggled to get the 13th Amendment passed by the House of Representatives. The Amendment abolished slavery once and for all in the United States. Though he had ordered the Emancipation Proclamation earlier, Lincoln feared the provision would only be held up as a “war power” and would become redundant after the war’s end — meaning, those legally freed would be immediately sent back into servitude. Lewis also said it took him a good year to get “comfortable with his character.” Spielberg said at the event he didn’t like the idea of waiting that long, but he is glad he did so. He also offered up his take on the Lincoln voice at a separate NYC screening event at the recent New York Film Festival. “Research talks about his high shrill voice,” Spielberg said. “I think we’d be criticized if we did it the way he’s heard by Disney’s Epcot Center with a low-tenored voice.” [ Source: THR ]

Cheryl Tweedy’s Sexy 2013 Calendar

Maybe it’s because I’m in love with Cheryl Tweedy , but it took me a while to realize this was a calendar, and not just another awesome photoshoot of my favorite British hottie. Can you blame me? The dates are crazy tiny, and my eyes were focused elsewhere. I’ve got to give them props for being realistic though. Nobody’s buying this calendar to find out what day Easter falls on in 2013, they’re buying it to ogle Cheryl. Which might actually make it the most practical calendar I’ve seen in years. Well done. » view all 14 photos Related Posts Cheryl Tweedy In Tight Leather Pants! Rhian Sugden With Clothes Is Not The Same

Here is sexy British glamour model Rhian Sugden at the Merabi Couture Launch Party. I’m not used to seeing her all dressed up, and frankly I don’t think it’s the right look for her. Rhian shouldn’t leave the house unless she’s dressed like this or this. Otherwise, I’m just wasting my time putting up some generic blond on the site.

James Bond Loot Heads For The Gavel As 007 Turns 50

The time is ripe for a James Bond auction. The latest in the franchise, Skyfall , heads to North American theaters in early November and the 50th anniversary of 007 is a key slot for a memorabilia sale. Posters from every Bond pic, stills, lobby cards, scripts and other memorables will hit the auction block and in December and is expected to take in over $200K. But the loot may pail in comparison to an earlier sale of Bond tidbits, including a bathing suit worn by 007’s latest incarnation, Daniel Craig . One of the centerpieces of the planned sale of Bond memorabilia is a rare From Russia With Love special advance Leicester Square world-premiere poster from 1963, according to Reuters. It is one of only a handful known to exist and it’s expected to nab $10,000 – $15,000. Certainly not bad, though not quite the tidy sum swimming trunks worn by Daniel Craig in Casino Royale fetched at a separate London auction . Judi Dench presented the swimming costume (as the Brits call it) and joked they were “unwashed,” selling for a cool $72,000. The latest items going under the hammer were assembled by a private British collector over 25 years, noted the auction house’s head Joe Maddalena. “He wanted to build the most comprehensive James Bond movie poster collection,” he said. “It’s really a mind-boggling collection.” Maddalena pointed out a yellow Dr. No silkscreen on linen poster from 1962 that is thought to be the very first 007 film poster ever to appear to the public. Other highlights going on sale is a rare U.K. advance for Goldfinger and a 1964 British Thunderball poster from 1965. They’re expected to sell for $4,000 – $6,000, though Maddalena noted that he tries to keep estimates “conservative.” The auction will take place n Los Angeles December 15 and 16 and will include hundreds of other Hollywood-themed memorabilia aside from Bond. Auctions have reaped huge sums in past sales. Marilyn Monroe’s “subway” dress from The Seven Year Itch sold for a whopping $5.5 million, while Audrey Hepburn’s Ascot dress from My Fair Lady grabbed $4.4 million. [ Source: Reuters ]

WATCH: Tom Hanks Drops Cloud Atlas F-Bomb On Good Morning America

Now that’s what you call good publicity! Tom Hanks of all people dropped an F-bomb on Good Morning America this morning (video below!), shocking GMA host Elizabeth Vargas and putting the epic, arty Cloud Atlas on the map with those four little letters. Well done! If I had to wager I’d place Hanks as one of Hollywood’s top three most beloved stars, so I’m 99% sure our glorious nation of moralistic, upstanding, non-swearing citizens forgave him on the spot when he subsequently cranked up that Hanks charm and apologized “to the kids of America that are watching this right now.” Yes, all of those GMA-watching youngsters, Tom. To be fair Vargas pressed Hanks into doing his Cloud Atlas Cockney accent, which makes his Cloud Atlas pidgin English accent sound like Shakespeare. Hanks even protested a bit, explaining that his British voice consists pretty much only of foul language. But no matter: LIZ VARGAS WANTED THE VOICE! If you ask me, Hanks’s f***in’ slip up was a great happy accident, the perfect stunt for getting the masses interested in the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer ‘s massively ambitious film . ” Tom Hanks plays multiple characters? And he swears?? Sign me up, honey! ” Etc. etc. Watch it on YouTube . (via Mediaite ) Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Darth Vader’s Wife: Punched in the Head!

A British citizen was arrested recently after punching another man’s wife in the face. A man whose name was legally changed to Darth Vader years ago. Obviously. Ikbal Hare threw a punch at Vader, who is of no relation to the iconic Star Wars character pictured above, after he suspected him of romancing Hare’s wife. He missed and connected with Mrs. Vader, according to the Wolverhampton Crown Court. Hare ran off, but was captured days later. The Force was not strong with him, apparently. In court today, he pleaded guilty to the attack and must spend 18 months on probation and go to anger management. He will also perform 200 hours of unpaid work. Prosecutor Tim Sapwell told the court yesterday that Mrs. Vader first asked her husband about the allegation, which he vehemently denied before confronting Hare. “There was a scuffle involving the two men and Mrs Vader tried to get between them, he said. “The defendant struck her but there is evidence that, in fact, he had been trying to hit Darth Vader.” Mr. Vader is understood to have changed his name to raise money for charity.

UK diver Tom Daley recently scored a sponsorship from British Gas. Perhaps in retrospect, he wishes he hadn’t … or that they’d at least reconsider the placement of their ad on his Speedo.
