A Costco location in California has apologized for labeling what it describes as a “small percentage” of its Bible inventory as “Fiction.” The issue was brought to the attention of the store after Caleb Kaltenbach – a pastor at Simi’s Discovery Church – noticed the placement of the Bibles and Tweeted: “Costco has Bibles for sale under the genre of FICTION Hmmmm……,” CostCo Labels The Bible “Fiction” The pastor’s congregation subsequently threatened a boycott, with one member telling KTLA: “I was completely offended. I believe the Bible is real and it shouldn’t be marked fiction.” Kaltenbach was hesitant to say Christians were under “persecution” for the act, but did add in an interview with Fox News: “On the other hand, I believe that we do need to stand up for our faith and we need to be vocal about our concerns.” In a statement, Costco says of this mistake, one of biblical proportions: “We deeply regret the mislabeling of the Bible and meant no offense to anyone. The buyer has let us know that this was an error and the books are being pulled off the shelves to be re-marked. “We take responsibility and should have caught the mistake. We are correcting them this with them for the future. We greatly apologize for this error.” And Kaltenbach seems satisfied with the resolution. “It caused a lot of controversy, it’s caused a lot of conversation,” he told Elizabeth Hasselback, acknowledging that it was “probably was a mistake” on Costco’s part, but: “I have no idea.”
