Katie Holmes Sues Tabloid For $50 Million

Katie Holmes is seeking damages of $50 million from American Media, the owner of celebrity gossip tabloid Star, based on a recent cover story. The lawsuit, over a cover extreme even by Star standards, takes issue with reports that Katie is on drugs , and was filed in federal court in L.A. Star’s “vicious lies about plaintiff, designed to hype sales of a sleazy tabloid magazine, were calculated to cause severe harm,” reads the suit . DRUG SHOCKER : The shocker is that they printed this! “The average reader (would invariably) believe that plaintiff has become shockingly addicted to drugs. There is no other way to understand them.” The suit continues: “The cover even created the false impression that, but for plaintiff’s nightmare drug addiction, she would ‘leave’ her husband.” In a statement, AMI said it stood behind the story in Star, which also raised eyebrows for reporting Jason Trawick beat up Britney Spears last year. Inside, the magazine backs off the claim of addiction, citing incidents in which Holmes joins Scientology sessions where an “e-meter” is used. Used in the controversial group’s auditing sessions, e-meters allegedly measure electrical resistance and reflecs past emotional experiences. The article states that the electrical device might release endorphins, or “hormones that cause a pain-killing, mood-elevating effect.” A Scientology member (not Tom Cruise) is quoted as saying about using the e-meter, “Like a heroin addict, you want another dose.” Yup, better get ready to pay up guys.

Britney Spears ‘Very Hands-On’ For Femme Fatale, Rodney Jerkins Says

‘She had a lot of ideas for me,’ producer says of pop star’s new album. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Kara Warner Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale Photo: Jive Britney Spears is a month away from the release of Femme Fatale, and nearly every day, she’s teasing fans with samples of some of the songs on the album, including the latest, her song with will.i.am, “The Big Fat Bass.” Now, longtime collaborator Rodney Jerkins is opening up about hitting the studio with Spears. “Britney’s always great to work with. I’ve worked with Britney for 12, 13 years now,” he told MTV News. “It’s always great to work with someone when you work with someone time and time again; it’s always great, and it always gets better. And just to see her evolve as an artist, it’s an amazing, amazing thing.” Jerkins worked with Spears in the past on “Overprotected (Darkchild Remix)” and “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” in the early 2000s, as well as her leaked version of Lady Gaga’s “Telephone,” when she was recording Circus. This time around, he said Spears knows exactly what she wants musically on the album. “She was very hands-on. She had a lot of ideas for me,” he said. “She’s great. She gets it. She is a top-notch veteran pro at this now.” She might be getting some help from Jerkins, but Dr. Luke and Max Martin are executive-producing the album, and Jerkins had nothing but the best to say about the production team. “I never spoke to them, [but] those guys are just great, and the stuff that they’ve been doing is just really, really great stuff,” he said. “I’m sure with their hands on it, it’s great.” Spears herself has described the album as “moody, edgy pop with A LOT of energy,” hinting that many of the songs will be uptempo, and Jerkins noted that the songs he’s been writing for her have certainly fit that label. “I know the songs that I do are uptempo,” he said. “The stuff I’ve done, I think, will kind of shock people. I got a chance to go out my box a little bit too. She’s great. Britney’s just awesome.” What are you expecting from Britney’s new music? Let us know in the comments! Melissa Leo Drops F-Bomb While Accepting Best Supporting Actress Oscar

Presenter Kirk Douglas nearly stole the show until the ‘Fighter’ star made her memorable speech. By Brian Warmoth Melissa Leo accepts the award for Actress in a Supporting Role Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Melissa Leo sparked some pre-Oscar controversy with her last-minute advertisements in major Hollywood trades, but in the end, nothing could disrupt the Best Supporting Actress nominee’s momentum from her wins at the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics Choice Awards. In the end, the two-time nominee beat out Amy Adams and Helena Bonham Carter to make the 50-year-old star and her part in “The Fighter” one of the night’s biggest stories. Kirk Douglas stole the show for a few minutes before presenting Leo’s award, which crowned her role as Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale’s mother with a golden statue. A heavy favorite, thanks to her previous honors in the last few months, Leo also beat out young contender Hailee Steinfeld and Jacki Weaver, who was nominated for “Animal Kingdom.” But it was Leo’s own speech that was being referred to for the rest of the night, thanks to her nervous slip-up. “Yeah, I am kind of speechless; golly sakes, there’s people up there too,” Leo marveled, waving at the audience in the mezzanine. “When I watched Kate two years ago, it looked so f—ing easy!” Luckily, ABC had enough of a broadcast time delay to bleep out her F-bomb, but that hasn’t stopped it from being an instant classic acceptance speech. After being passed up in 2009 for her performance in the comparatively small art-house film “Frozen River,” Leo walked off the stage with international recognition for her much bigger box office success story. Leo’s belief in her character Alice Ward propelled her through the final weeks of Oscar voting. Her decision to launch ads personally, reportedly without consulting “Fighter” distributors Paramount and Relativity, stirred up headlines as voters were finalizing their picks, but whether or not she managed to sway the Academy into her corner or already had their attention won’t make any difference now that she has the Oscar. Shortly after Leo’s win, Bale also took home the Supporting Actor prize. Russell Brand Comments On Katy Perry’s Product-Placement Tweets

Brand discounts media allegations that his wife’s recent negative Twitter comments were aimed at Britney Spears. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Russell Brand attends the 2011 Academy Awards Photo: Getty Images Katy Perry wanted the world to know that her recent Twitter comments about the use of product placement in music videos were taken completely out of context when it was implied that the star was talking about an alternate version of Britney Spears’ “Hold It Against Me” clip that features some prominently displayed products. Perry’s hubby, Russell Brand, had a lot to say about the supposed dis, knocking down rumors that Perry’s remarks were implying anything about her fellow pop diva. “I think those things are made up in the papers and the media to distract people from our spirituality and the truth, and it distracts us from the way the economic situation of the world keeps certain people trapped on this plateau,” Brand told MTV News on the Oscars red carpet, with his mother by his side. “Let’s all rise up and join together. Unite!” The controversy was initially sparked earlier this month after Perry — responding to a question about product placement from her California Dreams tourmate Marina and the Diamonds — tweeted, “Do it with style and grace … Not so in [your] face like some. [You] have to get creative with it. Some artists don’t care [though, and you] can tell.” Days after that post, Perry took to Twitter again to try and clarify the meaning of her tweet and take a jab at the media for attempting to pit her against Spears. “Dear tabloid media a.k.a. FILTH: please note I expressed an overall feeling about product placement, [its] role in videos and the art of them being compliment[ary] or sticking out,” Perry wrote. “Most, if not ALL, popsters welcome deals with products [to] offset costs of big-budget vids in these recessional music industry times. I’VE used them in MY vids before and am happy [to be] able [to] make a better vid because of [them]. “Once AGAIN, stop pitting artist against artist for [your] sensational satisfaction,” she continued, “and stick to what [you’re] best [at]: lying, gossiping, exaggerating and overall lending a hand [to] the deterioration of a generation.” Do you think Katy was taking a jab at Britney’s video? New Ke$ha Music Video: James Van Der Beek Alert!

Ke$ha has outdone herself this time. No, the eccentric artist isn’t wearing a crazy outfit or donning excessive face paint in the music video for “Blow.” But she is hilariously interacting with former Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek. “Well, well, well… if it isn’t James Van Der Douche,” Ke$ha says about halfway through. Responds the actor:“I don’t appreciate you slander-beeking my name, Ke-dollar sign-ha.” It makes very little sense, but don’t worry: according to a disclaimer, “no mythological creatures were harmed in the making of this video.” Ke$ha – Blow (Official Music Video)

Britney Spears: Pretty Much Loaded

Britney Spears has done well for herself in the last few years. The singer’s conservatorship and marketing machine have made a killing since December of 2008, when the conservators took over $2,826,362.68. Exactly one year later, Britney’s assets controlled by the conservators swelled to $27,500,000, thanks largely to Britney’s wildly successful Circus Tour. It’s good to be Britney Spears. Especially on medication . The figures are deceiving in that conservators only control a portion of Britney’s total estate – namely her business expenses . She has a lot of money and property in her various trusts and other business entitites the conservators do not control. Basically, she’s even richer than that figure indicates.
