Demi Lovato Confirmed As ‘X Factor’ Judge

Lovato and Britney Spears expected to be at Monday (May 14) Fox upfront event. By Gil Kaufman Demi Lovato Photo: Tom Pennington/ Getty Images America will meet the rebooted panel of the “X Factor” on Monday and filling the fourth slot at the judge’s table will be Demi Lovato . The 19-year-old Disney star is expected to make the announcement of her high-profile gig on Monday at the Fox network upfront presentation, which will also officially reveal the worst-kept-secret in TV: that Britney Spears has joined the show as well. Lovato is one of the many names
that has been in the mix for the gig, which at one point also included Avril Lavigne, Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. TMZ confirmed that Lovato has scored the gig, which will put her on alongside series creator Simon Cowell and music executive L.A. Reid when the show comes back for its second season in the fall. Last week, Spears finalized her deal, which will reportedly pay her $15 million
for one season’s work. Spears and Lovato replace Paula Abdul and former Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, who were fired in January after the first season of the heavily-hyped show failed to live up to Cowell’s lofty expectations. Both Lovato and Spears are expected to be on hand on Monday when Fox announces the show’s new lineup at its upfront presentations. Though Lovato has a summer tour planned
, those dates will reportedly not conflict with her new duties on “X Factor.” A spokesperson for “X Factor” could not be reached for comment at press time. Last week, MTV News asked some media experts whether the move to “X Factor” makes sense for Spears and the general consensus was that it did. “I think it is a good move, actually,” said Entertainment Weekly
writer Tanner Stransky. “I think she has so many people on her team watching what she’s doing and being careful. I think nobody would let her take a misstep, but I think it’s the right move right now.” The only concern is how the reclusive star might deal with the increased scrutiny and requirement to think on her feet on live TV. “I think everyone is a little concerned, simply because Britney has been very press-shy since she’s been in her conservatorship, and everything is incredibly guarded and incredibly controlled,” said Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts at Billboard . “And there can be uncontrollable moments on ‘The X Factor,’ and if things are not completely in control and things are not rehearsed, things could go wrong. With a live show, anything can happen, and that can be very exciting but, at the same time, a little worrisome.” Lovato and Spears, 30, are the kind of young singers that “X Factor” producers were seemingly looking for to give the show a more youthful appeal and share their experience with contestants. Both are former child stars who’ve struggled with personal issues
and neither has experience appearing on live network television. Do you think Demi Lovato will make a good “X Factor” judge? Let us know in comments below. Related Photos The Evolution Of: Demi Lovato Related Artists Demi Lovato

Britney Spears ‘X Factor’ Deal: By The Numbers

We look at Britney’s $15 million deal and what that kind of reality TV money can buy. By Gil Kaufman Britney Spears Photo: Splash News Online $15 million. Sure, on the surface that numbers seems pretty gaudy, especially when you consider it’s for one season
of work on a reality TV show that will add up to maybe one month’s work in total for Britney Spears . But we’re talking Britney here and when you aim to reel in the big fish you have to use a really big worm. That might explain why Simon Cowell has gone all-in to get Spears to join him and L.A. Reid on the panel of “Factor” this fall. Spears had been rumored for the gig for months, but considering the low profile she’s kept since her string of personal problems several years ago — which included a nearly total retreat from interviews and unscripted public appearances — the idea of Britney agreeing to appear on live TV twice a week seemed remote. Cowell typically gets what he wants, though, and now the world is going to see more of Britney than we have since her late 1990s heyday. What does that $15 mil buy you? Rihanna On Mend After Flu-Related IV

After ‘Battleship’ star tweets photo of an IV in her arm, source says she had a fever and flu ‘but is fine now.’ By Kara Warner Rihanna Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Celebrities: They’re just like us! Even the most famous pop stars catch the flu bug every now and then — at least, that’s what seems to have been ailing Rihanna recently. The 24-year-old singer issued a colorful complaint about feeling under the weather via Twitter over the weekend, and then surprised her 18 million followers with the photographic proof of her unidentified illness Tuesday with a Twit pic that showed RiRi in bed with an IV in her arm. According to People , a source close to Rihanna said the singer is on the mend and was not suffering from anything serious: “She had a fever and flu since last week and needed an IV, but is fine now.” Not that we’re qualified to offer a diagnosis here at MTV News, but judging from all the traveling, performing and promotion Rihanna has been involved in during the past month leading up to the release of her first movie, “Battleship,” as well as her performance on “SNL,” it seems likely the young woman was simply worn out. Here’s hoping she takes some actual time off for rest and relaxation. Meanwhile, we only have to wait a little while longer to see the “Where Have U Been” singer in her big-screen debut, a role that Rihanna said she relished because she got to be a total badass. “I wanted to do something badass, but I didn’t imagine it would be grungy, like straight Navy soldier, no makeup,” Rihanna said of her expectations for her first movie role. “I enjoyed it. “Battleship” opens May 18. Check out everything we’ve got on “Battleship.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Britney Spears Joins ‘X Factor’ As A Judge

Pop star will earn a reported $15 million for one season. By Katie Byrne Britney Spears Photo: Ethan Miller/ Getty Images Move over, Christina! Now that “The Voice” has wrapped, it’s time for another Mouseketeer-turned-diva to judge future music stars: Britney Spears has reportedly signed a deal to be a judge on “The X Factor,” according to E! News . News first broke in early March that the pop star was in negotiations to join the panel of Fox’s reality singing competition, and last month, it was reported that Spears was being offered $15 million for one season of the show — $3 million more than Jennifer Lopez earns as a judge on “American Idol.” “The contract is signed,” a source told E! “There’s been a lot of back and forth over the past few weeks as they negotiated the small details, but she’s on. It’s all completed and Britney is beyond excited.” In an April interview with TMZ , Cowell remained mum about the Spears negotiation rumors but admitted that he would “love” to have her on “X Factor.” “I think it would be a coup,” he said. “I think she would be a fascinating person to sit next to, so we’ll have to wait and see.” Spears will join returning mentors Cowell and record executive L.A. Reid on the panel. Several stars — from Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato to Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey — were reportedly discussed as possible replacements for Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul before Spears became the front-runner. There’s no word yet on whether one of those rumored contenders (or anyone, for that matter) will join the show as a fourth judge. “The X Factor” returns to Fox in September, with auditions already under way. Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson And The Art Of The Second Act

Above the Buzz examines how these former pop princesses serve as examples of how stars can re-brand themselves again and again. By Jocelyn Vena Britney Spears Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Both Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson dominated headlines this week. Not since the late ’90s have these two duked it out for so much media coverage. However there’s a remarkable difference in what’s happening today to what was happening then: Then, everyone was talking about their music and their pop star personas. Where Britney was a Lolita who proclaimed virginity while dancing provocatively in belly-baring tops, Jessica was innocent and sweet and didn’t dare anger her minister daddy. Jessica released songs that put her big voice on display, and Brit focused on songs that put eyes on her dazzling dance moves and her ear for dance beats. A lot has changes in the years since then. What’s interesting is that, despite their seemingly different personalities, in retrospect, they have a lot more in common than was initially apparent: They are both down-home country girls who have built empires that few can touch. Both have had very public career highs met with very public personal lows. Both have loved boy banders. Both have even documented their lives on reality shows, albeit with very different outcomes. With almost 15 years separating the women they are now from those girls they were then, it seems they are looking to change it up. At a time where the pop world is filled with plenty of younger pop princesses looking for their time to shine, Britney and Jessica seem comfortable enough with their own musical legacies to let them all have their moments. And, they should be at ease. They have both been incredibly successful in that world, having sold millions of albums, had huge radio singles and made music that is uniquely their own. And while Simpson has let her music take a back seat to other projects in the past few years, Spears is still a working singer who sells out tours and tops the charts. These days, Jessica seems focused on maintaining the post-pop star second act she launched several years back. She’s a fashion mogul with a billion-dollar empire that has outfitted fashionistas with reasonably priced essentials like platforms and bags. She also judges up-and-coming fashion talent on NBC’s “Fashion Star,” sharing with new designers her own wisdom on breaking into the industry. But, always savvy enough to keep people guessing, she’s expanded her brand even further. Now, she is also the latest mommy mogul . Jessica just added another gig to her post-pop star career — that of the A-list mom. Just this week, she welcomed her first child, Maxwell Drew , into the world. We expect she’ll use that experience to re-launch herself yet again. We should expect fashion lines for stylish toddlers. And who wouldn’t want to see a reality show that follows the new mom and her family? It seems that, like Simpson, Spears might be looking to take a break from music for a moment. Having already given birth to two sons and tried her hand at the worlds of fashion and beauty, Spears is now a frontrunner to judge “X Factor.” Her own experiences in the industry certainly make her the perfect candidate to give advice on the ups and downs of pop superstardom. She’s experienced both with the entire world watching. While Spears’ other projects (clothing line, fragrances) have generally been overshadowed by her music career, this rumored gig might be the first one to take the attention away from her pop fame while using it for all it’s worth. Spears is probably up for the gig because she is basically the heir to the Madonna legacy . She truly understands how to be a pop star. And the rumors that she might join Simon Cowell on the show seem to be intriguing Spears’ critics and non-devotees more than anything she’s done in the past few years. Spears might have found her perfect next chapter. Right now, it’s unclear how these new career paths will shape the future for Simpson and Spears — musically and otherwise. But, as has always been the case for them, no one doubts they will redefine what it means to be a female pop star. They are women who aren’t willing to go quietly into the night. For Spears and Simpson, it seems they want it all or nothing. And, who can blame them? What would you like to see Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson do next? Share your thoughts below! Jennifer Lopez or Enrique Iglesias: Who Would You Rather…

Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias are about to set off on tour together, as the artists gathered yesterday for a press conference discussing the anticipated concerts. There’s just one question: Who will open? And who will headline? “Neither Jennifer nor Enrique care who opens or closes,” J. Lo’s manager tells TMZ. “What we want to do is give the fans the best show possible and whatever that means, that’s what we will do.” But is that what Iglesias will do? He pulled out of a Britney Spears tour last year, reportedly, because he did NOT get top billing. Which leads us to ask: Which of these singers would you rather… see in concert?
