Arcade Fire Manager Responds To Steve Stoute’s Grammy Gripe

In an open letter of his own, Scott Rodger said he’s ‘proud of this band and what they’ve achieved.’ By James Montgomery Arcade Fire at the 2011 Grammy Awards Photo: Getty Images Three days after music-industry vet Steve Stoute took out a full-page ad in The New York Times to blast the Grammys for being out of touch and vaguely evil, the manager of one of the bands he singled out responded, calling Stoute’s missive “a nice piece of self publicity.” In an e-mail to industry insider Bob Lefsetz, Scott Rodger, manager of Album of the Year winners the Arcade Fire , ripped Stoute for calling into question not only the validity of the band’s triumph but also their show-closing second performance. While the encore served as a de facto victory lap for the band, to Stoute it appeared to be proof positive that the Grammys were rigged and in need of a serious overhaul. “Arcade Fire had the final slot on the Grammys as the ratings are low at the end of the broadcast. It really is that simple,” Rodger wrote. “[There was] no big plot. We had no guarantee of air time, but it was simply to play out the end-credits of the show. … For the Grammys international broadcast, our main performance — along with that of Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers was completely cut from the show. Our end-title performance was bastardized because they cut our ads/sponsor messages completely. It was a bit of a farce.” Rodger also defended his band’s AOTY win — which Stoute took issue with in his Times open letter, and then again in a follow-up interview with The Hollywood Reporter, — because, well, they “deserved” it. “They made the best album. If the award was named ‘Album Sales of the Year,’ there would be no discussion,” Rodger wrote. “Eminem made a big-selling album, but it was far from being his best work. Katy Perry made a big pop record that simply didn’t have weight or credibility. Gaga’s … was a repackage of the main release. “Arcade Fire are now one of the biggest live acts in the world. It’s not all about record sales. It’s about making great records, and it’s about building a loyal fanbase,” he continued. “The band make great albums, they’re not a radio-driven singles band. … Things couldn’t be better.” Rodger closed his e-mail by taking a final shot at Stoute, saying that his protests were myopic — since Arcade Fire’s triumph was actually celebrated by big-selling artists — and that “he needs to tune in.” “Did he see Kanye’s tweets when we won and the praise he gave us?” he wrote. “I’m proud of this band and what they have achieved.” Related Videos Backstage Interviews From The Grammys Related Photos The 2011 Grammy Awards Show Related Artists Arcade Fire

Oscar Preview: Will Natalie Portman Fly High? Can Colin Firth Be Stopped?

Annette Bening might pose a threat to the ‘Black Swan’ star, but Firth seems to be on a one-way track to Academy Awards. By Eric Ditzian Natalie Portman in “Black Swan” Photo: Fox Searchlight Last year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences coalesced around two ideas in the lead acting categories: for Best Actor, it was time to anoint a man whose time had come; for Best Actress, a populist favorite deserved the career thumbs-up that only a small golden statue can deliver. And so five-time nominee Jeff Bridges finally triumphed for his unfettered turn in “Crazy Heart” and Sandra Bullock , long an American sweetheart but hardly an enduring critical fave, took home the win for her uplifting and cheesiness-eluding performance in “The Blind Side.” Oscar, of course, is as fickle a gentleman as you’ll find in Hollywood. So this year, we find in Annette Bening (“The Kids Are All Right”) a four-time nominee who’s never managed to create a voting-community consensus that, shoot, this is my year, dammit! Thus, she finds herself trailing Natalie Portman (“The Black Swan”) for Best Actress, though the winner in that category is hardly clear-cut at this point. The same cannot be said for Best Actor, in which Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”) staked out an early lead that he hasn’t relinquished all awards season. As MTV News continues its week-long Oscar preview — ahead of the big show Sunday, February 27, when MTV News will be live-streaming from the red carpet at 6 p.m. ET — let’s take a closer look at the two lead acting categories. Best Actress It’s not Bening’s fault. No one can take away anything from what she accomplished onscreen in a warts-and-all portrait of a lesbian couple struggling to keep their family together; 2011 just isn’t her year. But hey, Al Pacino lost six times — including for the first two “Godfather” films and “Dog Day Afternoon” — before nabbing Oscar glory for “Scent of a Woman.” Bening will eventually get her Academy win. The trouble for the 52-year-old actress is that she’s facing off against Portman, who trained as a ballerina for 10 months, displayed a ripped physique onscreen and delivered a gutting portrayal of one woman’s psychological disintegration in “Black Swan.” It’s a far showier performance than Bening’s, and the fact of the matter is that subtly doesn’t often pay off when it comes to awards. That’s not to say it never does, and several influential Oscar prognosticators are picking Bening to pull off one of the evening’s biggest upsets. Either woman would be deserving. And don’t even get us started about why Michelle Williams isn’t at least in the running after a “Blue Valentine” performance so depressingly unnerving she should be standing outside theaters giving out free hugs. That’s just not the way the world works, and we’re going to go ahead and say a very pregnant Natalie Portman will be up onstage Sunday accepting the Best Actress win. Best Actor Bridges is back again, and you could even say his “True Grit” performance is finer and tighter than his turn in “Crazy Heart.” But Tom Hanks, he ain’t (Hanks is one of only two actors to take the category in consecutive years, following wins for “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump”), especially not in a year when Firth learned to stutter and went on to dominate awards season. Seriously, the guy has barely lost even an obscure critics association award, winning at the Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards and, oh, six dozen other ceremonies. Like Portman’s performance, Firth as the eventual King George VI is a flashier performance than any other in the category, save perhaps for James Franco’s (who, hey, didn’t actually lop off his arm for “127 Hours” and nixed any miniscule chance he had at an upset when he accepted a job as Oscar co-host). While we welcome Jesse Eisenberg to the ranks of the critically lauded — he’s been on our radar since a pitch-perfect debut as an anxious teen in 2002’s “Roger Dodger” — the 27-year-old actor never really had a shot to unseat Firth once the Brit’s awards-season supremacy became clear early on. What’s more, “The Social Network” peaked too early and now doesn’t have the momentum to pick up Eisenberg’s turn as Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and carry it toward victory. Best Actor, then, is an easy pick — perhaps the easiest of the major categories. Say hello to Colin Firth, your Best Actor in these 83rd Academy Awards. Will it be a regal evening for “The King’s Speech”? Can “The Social Network” dial up Oscar gold? Don’t miss MTV News’ “2011 Oscars Live” at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, February 27, when we’ll be chatting with your favorite Hollywood stars live from the red carpet on MTVNews.com, and stick with us all Oscar night for winners, interviews, photos and more! Justin Bieber Gets Billboard Boost After ‘Never Say Never’ Opening

While Now 37 takes #1 spot, Bieber’s album sales jump 145 percent following his big-screen debut. By Gil Kaufman Justin Bieber Photo: Gilbert Carrasquillo/ Getty Images There will be a new title at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart next week, but the biggest news is the huge sales bump Justin Bieber experienced thanks to the opening of his “Never Say Never” movie . While the Now 37 compilation (with songs by Eminem, Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Pink and Willow Smith) will snag the pole position thanks to sales of 151,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, Bieber’s 3-D big-screen debut gave a serious boost to his record sales. My World 2.0 is up 145 percent over the previous week, jumping 14 spots to #3 on sales of 48,000, while My Worlds Acoustic leaps 37 spots to #10 as sales zoomed up by 240 percent to 35,000. Even the 16-year-old singer’s 2009 debut EP, My World, benefited, moving 61 spots to #39 as sales were up 162 percent to 14,000. Next week’s charts will likely reflect the post-Grammy bump that traditionally follows the awards show, but even after going home empty-handed following a performance with Bob Dylan on the broadcast, England’s Mumford & Sons continue their unlikely chart ride. They zoom nine spots to #2 with Sigh No More, which sold 49,000 copies as sales picked up by nearly 100 percent over the previous week. The rest of the top 10: Nicki Minaj , Pink Friday (#4, 47,000), Pink , Greatest Hits … So Far!!! (#5, 41,000), Bruno Mars , Doo-Wops & Hooligans (#6, 39,000), Eminem , Recovery (#7, 38,000), Rihanna , Loud (#8, 37,000) and Jason Aldean , My Kinda Party (#9, 35,000). Maybe it was their Super Bowl halftime show, but after weeks of slipping down the charts, the Black Eyed Peas ‘ The Beginning moves six places to #14 (31,000, up 61 percent) while their two-year-old The E.N.D. (Energy Never Dies) jumps 21 spots to #20 as sales picked up by 75 percent to 20,000. It was all about Lady Gaga on the iTunes singles chart, as her queer anthem “Born This Way” went straight to #1. Gaga pushes Katy Perry ‘s “Firework” down a spot, where it’s followed by Pink ‘s “F—in’ Perfect,” the Black Eyed Peas’ “The Time (Dirty Bit),” Wiz Khalifa ‘s “Black and Yellow” and Jay Sean ‘s “Hit the Lights.” Rounding out the list are Cee Lo Green ‘s “Forget You” at #7, then Colbie Caillat ‘s “I Do,” Rihanna ‘s “S&M” and Avril Lavigne ‘s “What the Hell.” The Mumfords rule the iTunes albums chart, followed by Pink, Bieber’s Never Say Never – The Remixes, his acoustic album, the Beatles ‘ LOVE soundtrack to the Cirque du Soleil Las Vegas show, Rihanna, Eminem, Grammy performers the Avett Brothers ‘ I and Love and You, Bieber’s My World 2.0 and the Pretty Reckless ‘ Light Me Up. Look for the Grammy bump next week, as well as the chart debut of Bieber’s remix album and the new Bright Eyes effort, The People’s Key. Critics’ Choice Awards Love The Social Network And Natalie Portman As Much As Everyone Else Did

Last night the Broadcast Film Critics Association doled out their yearly accolades for the best acheivements in film, with many of the usual suspects getting the gold. The Social Network won best picture, Natalie Portman best actress, Colin Firth best actor, and so on (although Inception cleaned up fairly well in the technical categories. Might this be a portent for bigger things?). At this rate, the Golden Globes might be a bit of snoozefest. The full list of winners after the jump.

Matt Damon Recognized At Critics’ Choice Awards For Water.org Charity

‘True Grit’ actor receives Joel Siegel Award. By Aly Semigran Matt Damon accepts the Joel Siegel Award at the Critics’ Choice Awards Photo: Steve Granitz/ Getty Images While Matt Damon has taken the back seat to his “True Grit” co-stars Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld so far this awards season, the actor was acknowledged Friday night (January 14) by the Broadcast Film Critics Association during the 16th Annual Critics Choice Movie Awards for his humanitarian efforts. In a segment presented by Jimmy Kimmel and Emily Blunt, Damon was given the fourth annual Joel Siegel Award for Service to the Community. While Kimmel provided comic relief, joking that the Oscar winner is “the greatest guy in the world,” the actor received serious accolades for his charity, Water.org. Blunt, who stars with Damon in the upcoming film “The Adjustment Bureau,” explained that the organization Damon co-founded with Gary White helps to “provide developing countries with safe drinking water and sanitation by partnering with local communities.” As Blunt delivered the staggering statistics that less than 1 percent of the Earth’s water is drinkable and more than 1 billion people don’t have access to clean water, Kimmel continued to kid with Damon, telling him, “Sean Penn is actually in Haiti right now … carrying things!” Kimmel, who gets the last laugh at Damon’s expense every night on his late-night show, then cried foul on Damon’s many awards, mocking, “You know how much water he wasted in that shower scene in “School Ties”? A lot!” Damon, playing as good a sport as ever to Kimmel’s jabs, then took the stage to accept his award to a standing-ovation audience that included his “Good Will Hunting” collaborator Ben Affleck. After taking a shot back at Kimmel — “I literally have no idea why you’re here,” he quipped — Damon got serious about receiving what he described as “a wonderful honor.” The actor acknowledged the work of late film critic Joel Siegel, who, as Damon told the crowd, “Believed that you should use celebrity to improve the lives of others and he lived that way. So, I’m really honored to get this in his name.” Though plenty of the segment included joking around with Kimmel, Damon got very serious when he delivered the news that, “Every 15 seconds, a kid somewhere on planet Earth dies because they don’t have access to clean water and sanitation.” Calling that information “disgusting and unacceptable and unnecessary,” he added, “These are issues we’ve known how to solve here for 100 years in our country. … Just imagine if we cured AIDS tomorrow and in 100 years people were still dying of it, 3 million of them a year. It’s just really ridiculous.” Damon concluded his speech by thanking his partner, White, and informed viewers that by donating $25 on the Water.org website, they could give a child “clean water for life.” He then promised that they would change the fact that 1 billion people do not have clean water and offered to viewers, “Feel free to join us.” Related Videos Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet Interviews Related Photos 2011 Critics’ Choice Awards Celebrity Candids 2011 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Show Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet 2011
