‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark’ Actor Recovering As Show Goes On

Stuntman Christopher Tierney is walking again after suffering multiple broken bones in a fall during a performance last week. By Terri Schwartz “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” Photo: Marvel Thanks to new safety measures put in place on the set of “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark,” the Broadway musical’s preview shows continued on without incident over the holiday weekend. Several “Spider-Man” performances were canceled last week after stuntman and aerialist Christopher Tierney fell an estimated 20 feet and suffered severe injuries during a show last Monday (December 20). Tierney’s father, Timothy, told The New York Times in a phone interview on Friday that his son walked for the first time since the accident with the help of a walker and a brace. The actor had undergone back surgery on Wednesday to treat three fractured vertebrae he sustained in the fall, and had been expected to remain in the intensive care unit of New York’s Bellevue Hospital Center until Monday (December 27). Christopher Tierney also suffered a hairline fracture in his skull, a broken scapula, a broken bone close to his elbow, four broken ribs and a bruised lung. “My understanding is that Chris is fortunate to be alive,” Timothy explained to The Times . Apparently, the 31-year-old had been falling headfirst from a platform after the safety tether to his harness malfunctioned, but he managed to land on his right side in the basement below the stage of the venue — the Foxwoods Theater in Times Square. Timothy Tierney also spoke with The Associated Press about his son’s injury, and said that the musical’s cast and crew were “eagerly waiting [Chris’s] return. “He just felt so blessed to be part of this whole creative process, and he just cannot wait to get back and perform in the show,” Timothy added. Timothy also said doctors were “cautiously optimistic” that his son would eventually resume his career, but the performer will take a while to heal. “We just feel very blessed that Chris is alive and well, and thank goodness that he knew enough to roll onto his right side and land that way rather than land on his head or back,” Timothy said. “Some people fall from a lesser height than Chris and suffer more damage, even fatal damage.” On Wednesday, meanwhile, “Spider-Man” director Julie Taymor issued a statement and wished Tierney a safe recovery. Preview performances continue at the Foxwoods Theater this week as the days tick closer to the musical’s planned official opening on February 7 . The $65 million production features music written by U2’s Bono and The Edge.

Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Returning To Broadway’s ‘American Idiot’

Frontman will appear in 50 more performances of the musical inspired by his band’s landmark punk-rock concept album. By Gil Kaufman Billie Joe Armstrong performs with the cast of “American Idiot” on September 28, 2010 Photo: Slaven Vlasic/ Getty Images Talk about having the boss watching your work all the time. Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong apparently had such a blast appearing in “American Idiot,” the hit Broadway show based on his band’s landmark punk-rock concept album, that he’s agreed to take the stage again — 50 more times, in fact. According to an announcement on the show’s website , after dropping in for a handful of turns as the character St. Jimmy, Armstrong will step into his Doc Martens again, beginning January 1 and running through February 27 at New York’s St. James Theatre. The cameos will come in three stretches, from January 1-9, January 18-30 and February 10-27. The actor who originated the part on Broadway, Tony Vincent, will end his run as St. Jimmy on December 30. The Tony-winning show based on the band’s Grammy-winning 2004 album got a box-office boost when Armstrong made his Broadway debut in September during eight performances. During that stretch, ticket sales grew to more than $1 million; last week’s grosses were around $600,000. You can expect tickets for those shows to be a bit harder to get. While the show has been playing to just over 50 percent capacity in recent weeks, The New York Times reported that it was boasting a nearly sold-out 93.4 percent capacity reading when Armstrong joined the cast . Though St. Jimmy doesn’t show up until midway through the show, when Armstrong burst onto the stage during his September and October slots, the audience went wild as he ripped into his theme song, “St. Jimmy,” and mixed in the perfect combination of cocky, sneering attitude. By night’s end, he took his curtain calls with the rest of the cast and played guitar on the evening-ending “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” then came back out for a second bow and some hand-slapping with the patrons down front. Gleebasing: ‘I Think I Want to Marry You’

While reliving the glorious high of Gwyneth Paltrow’s episode of Glee last week (do not be foolish; it was her episode entirely), Movieline sadly figured that viewers would not score another hit of Ryan Murphy’s series this season that would produce the same euphoria. But we were wrong, because last night’s episode — regrettably titled “Furt” — delivered what Gleams* are made of: a storyline in which Sue Sylvester marries Sue Sylvester, Mike O’M alley steals screentime from Schue and Carol Burnett guest-stars as a deadbeat mother who sings Broadway tunes. Now onto the highs and lows.

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Recap: Jennifer Grey Has A Flawless Finale

Bristol Palin is back on the bottom, while Kyle Massey couldn’t quite measure up to the ‘Dirty Dancing’ actress. By Kelley L. Carter Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough on “Dancing With the Stars” Monday Photo: ABC While surprise eliminations have made this one of the most talked-about “Dancing With the Stars” seasons yet, there weren’t any real shockers on Monday night’s (November 22) episode. Front-runner Jennifer Grey continued her dominance, grabbing perfect 10s for both her performances. In fact, judge Bruno Tonioli told her he loved her paso doble so much, he wished he could give her an 11. For her freestyle, Grey and partner Derek Hough had a bit of fun with a send-up of her famous role in “Dirty Dancing.” She started off the routine by holding a watermelon then shimmied to the Contours’ “Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance).” The judges loved it; head judge Len Goodman said, “You’re like a juggernaut … heading for that mirror-ball trophy!” 60/60 The second-place finisher was Disney kid Kyle Massey, who did a freestyle hip-hop dance that earned him one of his highest scores, a 29. In his freestyle, he dressed like Will Smith in the title sequence of his 1990s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” He and his partner, Lacey Schwimmer, also performed the foxtrot for his second dance. “I dub you the Fresh Prince of ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ ” judge Carrie Ann Inaba told him. 56/60 The last-place dancer was Bristol Palin, whose first dance was a freestyle during which she started off inside a jail cell. She redid a jive that judges thought didn’t quite cut it earlier in the season. She and her partner Mark Ballas freestyled to “Cell Block Tango” from the Broadway musical “Chicago.” The judges weren’t impressed with her reinterpretation of the Fosse-choreographed dance. 52/60 Who are you rooting for to win it all during Tuesday night’s finale? ‘True Blood’ ‘s Rutina Wesley Recalls Early ‘Fame,’ On ‘When I Was 17’

Before she fought vampires, the actress got her start at a performing arts high school. By MTV News Staff Rutina Wesley Photo: MTV News Rutina Wesley is probably best known for her recent work on “True Blood,” where she plays Tara Thornton, the spirited, sass-tacular sidekick of Sookie Stackhouse. But before that, she impressed on the Broadway stage and starred in the 2007 film “How She Move,” both of which showed off her first passion: dance. Wesley grew up in Las Vegas, the daughter of a tap-dancing father and a showgirl mother, and as a teen, she attended the prestigious Las Vegas Academy, a performing arts magnet school, where prospective students must audition to be accepted. Naturally, she danced to get her spot. Once she got into the Academy, she faced a whole new series of challenges, as she reveals on the next episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17.” “The first show I did in high school was ‘Fame,’ Wesley recalled. “What I love about ‘Fame’ is it’s sort of like I was living ‘Fame.’ I was going to a performing arts high school, [and] I knew the hard work it took to be there. The auditions were brutal for that show, I remember I had to dance, sing and act, and it was really tough.” Of course, she landed a role in play, and it was then that she got her first taste of actual fame. From there on out, she knew she was born to be a performer. “The theater at my school was awesome, ” she laughed. “It was a 1,400-seat auditorium, so, being in that auditorium at 17, and having, like 1,400 people cheer for you was, like, one of the most amazing feelings that I’ve ever felt, energy-wise. It just felt right.” To hear more about Wesley’s story — and find out what OutKast’s Big Boi and actor Joey Lawrence were like when they were 17, tune in to the next episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday (September 18) at 11 a.m. on MTV. Who Wins This Wicked Duet: Idina Menzel or Michael Kors?

Though Glee showstopper Idina Menzel originated the lead role in Broadway blockbuster Wicked , that really gives her no edge in this Fashion’s Night Out duet of “Defying Gravity” with Project Runway headmaster and towering coloratura Michael Kors. He’s got the disapproving snarl to woo the Great Wide Way, the black blazer to dazzle even the most curmudgeonly theatergoer, and the topaz complexion to illuminate Times Square for weeks. They’re evenly matched — just see for yourself:
