For the second consecutive week , Spencer and Heidi were absent from The Hills . To replace the abhorrent couple, who were rumored to have split late last week , producers introduced a few leather handbags, a smiling brunette named McKaela, and Kristin’s trainer. It was a fair substitution. Per usual, here are the realest and fakest moments of last night’s episode “Ghost From the Past.”

Old habits die hard. Especially when the producers of The Hills keep recycling them and you have zero self respect. Justin-Bobby and Audrina Patridge, everyone! Yup, last night’s Hills marked the return of He Who Must Not Be Named and Does Not Shower. It also marked another week of the same Kristin and Brody drama. To say the show is growing stale and running out of compelling characters is an understatement. Still, here’s THG’s official rundown of The Hills , plus-minus style: Kristin and Stacie decide to go out and meet boys to get Kristin’s mind off of Brody. Not surprisingly, they find themselves disappointed by the selection. Minus 1 . Brody tells McKaela there’s nothing going on with Kristin Cavallari and she needs to deal. Plus 3 for poor, sweet, naive, out-of-town McKaela actually buying it. Brody Jenner and Kristin Cavallari: “Nothing going on.” McKaela meets up with L to talk about the “Kristin situation” and working at Smashbox Cosmetics together. Yup, we’ve reached the point of Lo-McKaela story lines . Minus 6 . Brody Jenner in a nutshell: He likes Kristin; He likes being a player; He brings in new girls to prove they’re just friends, then pursues her again. Repeat. Pure game . Plus 20 . Minus 8 , though, because he and Avril Lavigne are together in real life, making it impossible to take any of what we’re watching seriously (and it was hard to begin with). Poor, faithful Ryan Cabrera is, like, so devoted to Audrina, even though there’s zero evidence of chemistry between them, and we know they already broke up. Minus 17 . Audrina Patridge is TOTALLY CAUGHT OFF GUARD by Justin-Bobby! Minus 20 because it’s Justin-Bobby , but Plus 29 for the blatantly obvious contrived nonsense factor. The producers told me I’d run into … er, fancy seeing you here! Ostensibly, the reunion happened when Audzo checked out the band Purple Melon at the Viper Room, where J-Bobby’s band is also performing. He’s in a band? Plus 7 . Justin being a drummer without us knowing for years? Minus 3 . Expecting us to believe Audrina just happened to show up? Minus 4 . Him being pretty good? Plus 9 . She omits mention of seeing Justin when she recounts the night to Ryan. Minus 5 . Then the next evening (when Cabrera is out of town), they meet up again. Sigh .

The third episode of The Hills’ final season reintroduced Brody Jenner and Kristin Cavallari as lovebirds. Because … they used to date and we’re out of other options? Last night’s episode, “Elephant in the Room,” found these two pondering a staged reconnection, while he also pondered his supposed “crush” on Audrina Patridge. Brody calls Enzo’s party the most awkward of his life. So true. Plus 9 . Kristin Cavallari asks Brody about Audrina over a drink in a typical, staged Hills discussion where they pretend to be conflicted about relationships. Minus 19 . Spencer Pratt, ever eloquent, repeats his earlier claim that Heidi’s mom is “just a vagina” who let Heidi come into the world, but is nothing special. Plus 40 . As Holly leaves, Spencer shouts at her that he’ll call the cops next time. “Keep walking … Nobody wants you in Hollywood.” Okay, that’s enough. Minus 12 . TOTAL: +11 . SEASON: +51 . Despite what appeared to be a new start for Justin and Kristin at the end of last season, season six won’t see the couple taking their relationship to the next level. “That’s over. It’s done. It didn’t go very far,” Cavallari said of JB. And the split, according to Kristin, was mutually agreed upon. “I don’t think anyone’s to blame for it. I think we’re two completely different people. I mean at the end of the day we really have nothing in common.” “Hills” followers shouldn’t worry that Kristin might be heartbroken. She’s always had great chemistry with her ex-guy Brody Jenner . The newly single star could revisit that relationship, though Brody also seems to be getting close to a new lady this season. “Micaela is new to L.A., actually,” Cavallari said of Jenner’s potential love interest. “But funny enough, she’s sorority sisters with Lo. … Brody and I have been hanging out a little bit. We have amazing chemistry, so we have a great time together. But I don’t know. I don’t know if we could ever really get back together, but Micaela’s a girl that Brody started dating.” So, who else is on Kristin’s radar? Lynn Redgrave, an Oscar-nominated actress most recently seen on an episode of Ugly Betty last year, passed away last night. She was 67. Publicist Rick Miramontez, speaking on behalf of Redgrave’s family, said the veteran thespian died peacefully Sunday night at her house in Connecticut. She was surrounded by children Ben, Pema and Annabel. “Our beloved mother Lynn Rachel passed away peacefully after a seven year journey with breast cancer,” they said in a statement Monday. “She lived, loved and worked harder than ever before. The endless memories she created as a mother, grandmother, writer, actor and friend will sustain us for the rest of our lives. Our entire family asks for privacy through this difficult time.” Redgrave’s passing comes a little more than year after her niece, Natasha Richardson, died from head injuries sustained in a skiing accident. Her older brother, Corin Redgrave, died last month. Lynn received Oscar nominations for Georgy Girl and Gods and Monsters , as well as Tony nominations for Mrs. Warren’s Profession , Shakespeare for My Father and The Constant Wife . Brody Jenner and Ryan Cabrera “have had some issues in the past.” Or at least since The Hills writers decided to rewrite history, anyway. Frankie Delgado and Brody Jenner , in a completely unstaged preview from tomorrow’s episode, can be seen gossiping about Ryan and whether Brody will try to hit it with Audrina Patridge when the crew all meets at an upcoming party. While he doesn’t go into much detail about said issues, Brody and Frankie do attempt to trash talk Cabrera, but their jokes are as off as his jumpshot. “It’s cool that they’re together and stuff because they have a lot in common,” Jenner says. “They can borrow each other’s jeans … hair gel.” Clank . A Brody Jenner love triangle is brewing. Does anyone care? Audrina Patridge and Ryan Cabrera have been together for a few months now … and we know he’s hooked up with her in the past, but watching Brody pretend to care so much about their relationship just comes off as awkward here. Come on, Hills writers. Can’t you feed these guys some better lines? Please try, or just leave the trash talk to Kristin Cavallari , she’s the only one with the versatility and track record to do it convincingly week in and week out.
