The Red Bees of Brooklyn, and a Search for a Solution

Earlier in the week, the New York Times reported that bees in Brooklyn had started turning red , and their honey was looking like bright red goo. It turned out that the urban bees (the bee ban of New York having now been lifted) were hitting the corn syrup at the local Maraschino Cherry factory in record numbers. Now the

Jay-Z’s ‘Decoded’ Takes #3 Spot On New York Times Best Sellers List

Hov’s first book comes in behind George W. Bush’s ‘Decision Points’ and Laura Hillenbrand’s ‘Unbroken.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z Photo: John Parra/ Getty Images Jay-Z might be able to best Elvis Presley when it comes to topping the album charts, but the Brooklyn MC wasn’t able to muscle past former president George W. Bush on the book list. The witty wordsmith-turned-author debuted at #3 on the New York Times Best Sellers list with his first book, “Decoded,” a collection of the rapper’s lyrics deconstructed with the help of co-author Dream Hampton. The former prez’s book “Decision Points” topped the Hardcover Nonfiction list for the second time in as many weeks. Laura Hillenbrand’s “Unbroken” was the top debut, notching the #2 slot. Jay-Z went on a heavy promotional campaign for “Decoded,” making appearances on the “Late Show With David Letterman,” “Charlie Rose” and “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.” He also partnered with Microsoft’s Bing search engine for a portal that doubled as a scavenger hunt-like game where readers who decoded Jay-Z’s lyrics would unearth scripts of his lyrics in the locations he referred to in song. In the past, Jay-Z promised to deliver a memoir, co-authored by Hampton, titled “The Black Book.” But the rapper subsequently revealed that the material was too personal and decided to pull the plug on that project. “Decoded” does get personal nonetheless, as evidenced during passages such as the one in which the “Empire State of Mind” star recalls the death of the Notorious B.I.G. “I wanted people to have the proper context of rap, the generation, what we went through, these emotions behind these songs,” Jay-Z told MTV News earlier this month. “A song like ‘Lucifer,’ it’s really about the struggle and really about dealing with death and having that feeling. The evil is inside of you, not this mythical character with pitchforks and things like that. Dealing with a feeling of wanting revenge.” Related Videos Jay-Z’s ‘Decoded’: A Closer Look Related Artists Jay-Z

Gift Guide: No Stocking is Truly Stuffed Without Growing Pains Trading Cards

What self-respecting aficionado of popular culture would not want his or her own box of Growing Pains trading cards? Yes, these exist. Quite by accident, I stumbled upon them at a flea market in Brooklyn — which is pretty much the only place you’re going to find something like this accidentally (the dealer had Willow and 90210 , too). Strangely, I felt compelled to spend four dollars for five packs of pure Seaver awesomeness. What exactly will you find inside? Hint: It’s awesome .

Lil Wayne Collaborators Partners-N-Crime Building Buzz Beyond Bayou

New Orleans duo talk to Mixtape Daily about linking up with Lil Wayne, YMCMB crew as they prep Legendary LP. By Jayson Rodriguez Partners In Crime Photo: NOLA Fire Starter: Partners-N-Crime OK, so these guys might not exactly be new jacks, but Partners-N-Crime are still on the come up. After building an extensive catalog and collaborations with the likes of Lil Wayne, the New Orleans duo are expanding their fanbase. Riding the wave of their new banger “Finally Could Breathe,” featuring Young Money president Mack Maine, Kango Slim and Mista Meana are currently hard at work on their 10th project, Legendary, set to drop next year. It’s an effort they once would have been hard pressed to put together, when their camps warring with each other years ago. “When we were coming up in the game, Wayne was a little bit younger than us,” Slim told Mixtape Daily. “We were on a label at the time called Big Boy and he was with Cash Money Records. And to be honest, both of the labels had a rivalry thing going on. Once Cash Money blew, Big Boy continued to do their thing. They housed Mystikal, Fiend, us, and a couple more artists. At one time, we never looked eye to eye, but as we grew older things began to change.” Wayne helped break the ice when he reached out to the underground vets a couple of years ago offering to record a track together. (The group was also, at one point, signed to former Cash Money member Juvenile’s label.) Partners-N-Crime sent Weezy something they were working on, a rockish number called “We Do What We Want To,” which eventually landed on their last set, We Are Legend. The superstar MC liked what he heard and contributed a verse. (“This was a little bit before he got into the same type of music with Rebirth, ” Meana recalled.) The result was a raucous anthem that helped to push PNC beyond their bayou borders. Before finishing up their Legendary collection, the group is next scheduled to perform at BAM’s 2010 Next Wave Festival in Brooklyn, New York, as part of the Red Hot + New Orleans lineup. Jay-Z Says Watch The Throne With Kanye West Is On ‘Another Level’

‘Decoded’ MC tells MTV News teaming up with ‘Ye for joint LP is ‘fantastic’ because he’s watched him grow. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage Jay-Z has been on top of the MC heap for so long you’d think he’d be fine ruling his monarchy without outside contributions. But for his next set, Watch the Throne, Jay is making a collaborative effort with Kanye West, and the Brooklyn legend tells MTV News he’s excited about the project, especially given the “Runaway” star’s growing status as a hip-hop king. “This is another level of that recording,” Hov explained to us this week. “Because Kanye, I’ve seen him — really he’s like a brother to me — I’ve seen him from the beginning to where he is now. And to see him as a producer and to see how he’s growing as a producer and as an artist, for me, on another level, it’s enjoyable. I’m watching the guy that I pretty much mentored become his own guy, with his own opinion. It’s fantastic.” The project was originally slated to be an EP, but West confirmed to MTV News in October that Watch the Throne would now be a full-length release. “We putting out a whole album now,” ‘Ye said. “We had done five [songs] so far, but then a few of them kind of were out there, and I put them on my album. Sorry, Jay. But we got some more, and we’re going to the South of France at the end of the month to just record new ideas. But we’ll probably be done with the album in a day.” The pair ventured to France last month to record material as planned, and Jay-Z revealed he and West will head out to Australia soon to finish the rest of the album. The inspired duo recently completed seven songs in three days, according to Hov. Are you glad Jay and Kanye are teaming up for a joint album? Tell us in the comments! Opossums Enlisted to Eat Rats Now Overrun Brooklyn

Photo via djandzoya It seemed like a plan just sinister enough to work: ship in a bunch of rat-eating opossums to combat Brooklyn’s rodent problem . But as opposed of doing their job and dying off as city officials had planned, the opossums proved to be poor rat-killers, preferring instead to settle down in buildings and neighborhood parks. Now community leaders are fed up with the marauding animals rummaging through trashcans, hanging out in yards, and feeding themselves from local
