Nick Jonas Recalls ‘How To Succeed’ Fan ‘Craziness’

Jonas Brother and co-star Michael Urie, who end their Broadway run Sunday, tell MTV News the fans ‘say some pretty wild things.’ By Jocelyn Vena Nick Jonas Photo: MTV News Nick Jonas will end his run in “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” when the Broadway show closes Sunday. The singer, along with his co-star Michael Urie, will no longer play business rivals on the Great White Way, but do continue to hold fond memories of their time in the show. When MTV News caught up with the actors recently, they recalled some of their favorite fan encounters during their tenure in “How to Succeed.” “The craziest fan encounter? The great thing about the fans is that they are polite during the show,” Jonas said. “At the beginning of the show, they have an opportunity get excited, and then throughout the show, they are very polite.” Everyone’s polite — at least, until Jonas got his smooch on. “Occasionally, they’ll have little outbursts of craziness,” he remembered. “It usually comes for me during the kissing moment during the show. They can say some pretty wild things I can hear out of the corner of my ear. It’s fun.” Urie joked, “I actually stand offstage during the kiss and scream things like, ‘Nick, Nick, oh Nick,’ with about that [deep] inflection.” All joking aside, Urie did have some warm, fuzzy encounters with the show’s fans before every performance. “Before the show, it’s fun to come into the theater every night, because there are people waiting. Sometimes there are people camped out waiting that aren’t even there to see the show,” he said. “They’ve already seen the show or they’re seeing the show in the future, and they’ll be like, ‘Hey Michael, good show.’ And they’re very cool and easygoing.” Both Jonas and Urie joined the show in January. Their run was expected to go until July 1, but they’re closing a bit early. With the show ending Sunday, Jonas will now devote more time to recording a new album with his brothers. The Jonas Brothers are currently hard at work on their follow-up to 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times . Have you seen “How to Succeed”? Share your review in the comments below! Moody Monster Flick? Lesbian Letdown? Puzzling Jack and Diane Debuts at Tribeca

Oh to be young and in love and periodically a flesh-rending creature of globular, hairy, throbbing pulp. That’s the curse heaped upon the eponymous romantics in Jack and Diane , one of the more anticipated — and more disappointing — features in Tribeca 2012’s narrative competition. It’s hard to be too down on such lean passion; Jack and Diane ‘s premiere Friday night amounted to the culmination of nine years of work by filmmaker Bradley Rust Gray, whose acclaimed 2010 drama The Exploding Girl served as sort of a hetero prelude to the lesbian body horror/romance mashup swamping his latest: Diane (Juno Temple) is a hot British teen mess visiting her aunt in New York City, all babydoll dresses, knit watermelon halter tops and purple knee socks, rocked by the hormonal lighting strike that is butch, brooding Jack (Riley Keough). The girls club, they kiss, they bond, they exchange vaguely sweet Manhattan banalities (“I have a Metrocard if you want it”), and then… I don’t even know. On the one hand it’s not worth spoiling; jumpy genre reveals are involved, hinted at by customarily grisly animation by the Brothers Quay. On the other hand, Jack and Diane is too much of a mess to spoil, suffocated in the dynamics of longing without even the hope of dramatic — or even darkly comedic — satisfaction. It’s a movie whose shadowy genre overtones — a girl! In a bathroom! With a bloody nose! And a monster! — surrenders to the same auteurist A.D.D. that sank The Exploding Girl . For once, I would like to see Gray’s New York not refracted surveillance-style through long lenses and the fraught nubile wits of characters whose doe eyes and costumes connote virtually the whole story. Temple’s expressive genius — all matted blond hair and mischievous (and monstrous) pixie — goes only so far against Keough’s near-total blankness, getting most of its mileage out of a single early, affecting confessional between the star-crossed girls. Ultimately, though, it’s hard to know just how seriously to take Jack and Diane , with all its sinewy portent and bizarre porn digressions and tragicomic pube-shaving and actual straight-faced dialogue such as, “Do you have to take a shit? Try to do like I do and fart it out.” Viewers familiar with The Exploding Girl might realize after a while that they’re only staying with Jack and Diane for the promise of more B-list hipster-goddesses losing control; then it was Zoe Kazan’s simmering epileptic panic, and now it’s the viscera-devouring prospect of sapphic passion — in one case featuring Elvis Presley’s grandaughter (Keough’s mother is Lisa Marie Presley) and Kylie Minogue in a heavily tattooed cameo. It is what it is, and it never feels like much more. Nevertheless, there is at least one glint of salvation in Jack and Diane , though it has nothing to do with its filmmaking or performances (and here I should issue a spoiler alert): Keough and Minogue make out to the strains of Shellac’s rare and entrancing hate-punk ballad ” Doris ,” which I suppose means that someone somewhere has a clean MP3 of the notoriously vinyl-only single. Far East Movement Congratulate Tokio Hotel On Musical March Madness

‘If you die tomorrow, at least you won today,’ Kev Nish says, making a reference to Far East’s collaboration with TH frontman Bill Kaulitz. By James Montgomery Far East Movement Photo: MTV News Tokio Hotel ‘s first 24 hours as Musical March Madness champions has already included some spirited back-and-forth between their Aliens and Green Day’s rabid fanbase (check the comments of our title game recap for proof), a rather gracious acceptance speech from the Brothers Kaulitz, and now, a special shout-out from their pals in the Far East Movement. Yes, when MTV News caught up with the fast-rising hitmakers on Wednesday, they were quick to praise Tokio Hotel for their MMM win … and pimp their upcoming collaboration with Bill Kaulitz, too. “Big congrats to Tokio Hotel, Bill Kaulitz and crew!” Far East’s Kev Nish said. “If you die tomorrow, at least you won today.” See what he did there? For the uninitiated, “If I Die Tomorrow” is a song on Far East’s upcoming Dirty Bass album, which features collabos with the likes of Justin Bieber, LMFAO’s Redfoo and, of course, Kaulitz. And if featuring a member of TH on a track seems a bit off, well, let’s let Nish explain how the whole thing came to be. “When we first signed to Cherrytree [Records], we went on the website and see who’s on the roster … how do you pick what label to go to, you know?” he said. “And we saw Tokio Hotel, and we were like ‘Yo, this band is wild.’ We were on a bus watching them on the MTV Europe Awards, winning, and we were like, ‘We need to do a song with those dudes.’ “So we got in with Bill Kaulitz and we just wanted to do a song about losing yourself, about possibly losing your mind, because you might die the next day,” he continued. “It’s called ‘If I Die Tomorrow,’ and it’s Bill Kaulitz and his incredible tone in our dirty bass world … and that’s kind of where dirty bass is going: unexpected collaborations.” And given Tokio Hotel’s big MMM win, we think this may be the first of many Kaulitz collaborations. After all, when you’re on top, everyone wants a piece of you. Jonas Brothers Promise ‘Anything Goes’ On New Album

‘We’re saying, ‘Let’s just vibe out, write a million songs and see what we’re feeling most,’ Nick Jonas tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas and Kevin Jonas of Jonas Brothers Photo: El Universal It’s on! The Jonas Brothers promised they’d be hitting the studio very soon, and it seems they are men of their word. This week big bro Kevin tweeted out some footage of Joe and Nick in the studio whipping up some musical ear candy that will surely delight their fans. While there’s no certainty that the teased track will make their next studio release, the song certainly does blend the guys’ love for mixing genres, touching on soul, rock and disco. When Nick dropped by the MTV News offices recently, he said that when this next album drops, all bets are off as to what it will sound like. “We have spoken about it, and the thing we’re doing which is different to any record we’ve made in the past is we’re saying, ‘Anything goes, let’s just vibe out, listen to a million songs, write a million songs and see what we’re feeling most.’ Our statement, as a band, for this record has to be really strong. We feel like we want to deliver the best record we can.” Individually, the guys have been busy churning out albums, but there hasn’t been a proper JB album since 2009, when they dropped Lines, Vines and Trying Times. The guys are well aware that the music scene is vastly different three years later. “We pay attention to it, definitely,” Nick said. “That’s part of your job as an artist, too, is to be aware of what other people are doing. … We pay attention and have been paying attention just to see where we want to fall. But first we just want to write great songs, and as far as how it sounds, that’ll come second.” There has yet to be a release date for the album, but the Jonas Brothers have teased that it may drop before the end of the year. The hashtag #JonasBrothers2012 attached to the studio video may be the best hint so far. “We don’t know how long it’s going to take us to write this record,” Nick warned. “It may take a couple weeks, it may take months, it could take years, but we’re ready to go on that journey. It’s been a while and there has been a lot of growth as individuals and musically as well. We’ve all gone on our journeys musically. It’ll be interesting to see what comes of that.” What are you hoping to see on the Jonas Brothers’ next album? Leave your comment below!
