Rap’s reigning queen has evolved from a budding New York MC to an omnipresent figure in music and pop culture. She’s come a long way since her 2007 Playtime Is Over mixtape. “I think I went from being a caricature in people’s eyes to becoming someone with a lot of layers,” Nicki told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway when she appeared on his “Sway in the Morning” Shade 45 radio show on Tuesday. Nicki spoke with Sway and co-host Devi Dev about a range of topics — from her over-the-top 2012 Grammy performance to working with Madonna — but Nicki seemed most eager to emphasize that as many strides as she’s made in her career, her superstar qualities were always there on the inside. “You just gotta realize that I’m never gonna be one-dimensional,” she said. “Even my core fans I think, at times, thought I was one-dimensional when I was doing mixtapes. However, even on the mixtapes, I was singing and I did a song called ‘Can Anybody Hear Me’ on one of my mixtapes where I was singing and talking about being a female rapper and trying to get signed.” “Can Anybody Hear Me” appeared on her 2009 tape Beam Me Up Scotty and featured Nicki spitting about her difficulty securing a record deal. Funny when you think about all of the success she’s now obtained. “When it rains, it pours for real/ Def Jam said I’m no Lauryn Hill/ You can’t rap and sing on the same CD/ The public won’t get it, they got A.D.D.,” Nicki rapped back in ’09. Minaj has since broken down those barriers and her latest album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, is the ultimate brush-off to naysayers who once told Nicki what she couldn’t do. “It’s just been peeling back the layers and now I think the ultimate layer was me saying, ‘Now I’m gonna do whatever kind of music I want to do and you’re free to not like it,’ ” she said. “This new album, Roman Reloaded, when I tell you I am not nervous, I am not fearful; all of those emotions left.” The Young Money superstar’s second album balances her hard-core rap sensibilities with pop tracks produced by RedOne and Dr Luke. Critics have been lukewarm , but Nicki doesn’t want to choose between the two distinct musical genres; it’s all derived from a feeling, she said. “My story is not gonna always entail a hard hip-hop beat, but sometimes it is,” she explained. “A lot of the tracks on this album are just a hard hip-hop beat and just spittin’ and that’s why I enlisted some people like [Cam’ron] and 2 Chainz and the legendary Nas.” What do you think of Roman Reloaded ? The Good Girl Gone Bad regularly hits Twitter to hash it out over everything from her taste in ink to her take on fellow R&B divas . But the one subject she’d kept off her tongue was ex-boyfriend Chris Brown. So the Bajan beauty’s decision this year to very publicly reconcile with Brown, who served probation for assaulting her in 2009, by teaming up with him in February on a pair of remixes was widely met with shock and, in many circles, outrage. In the new issue of Elle, however, the blond cover girl tells the magazine she understands her decision is a hard pill for some to swallow. “The bottom line is that everyone thinks differently. It’s very hard for me to accept, but I get it,” she says. “People end up wasting their time on the blogs or whatever, ranting away, and that’s all right. Because tomorrow I’m still going to be the same person. I’m still going to do what I want to do.” Rather than view the violent end of her relationship with Brown as a brutal low to be endured as a victim, the superstar says the fallout from the headline-making assault gave her courage. “It gave me guns,” she says. “I was like, well, f—. [The public knows] more about me than I want them to know. It’s embarrassing. But that was my opening. That was my liberation … Now you know that, so you can say what you want about it. I don’t have anything to hide.” In the wake of her provocative “Birthday Cake” remix with Brown, the 24-year-old was rumored to have reunited with the “Deuces” singer both in and out of the studio. But Rih says in the May issue (out April 17) that she’s focused on changing her single status to “in a relationship,” stressing over the pervasive man shortage and her busy schedule. “I feel like it’s hard for everybody ! Rihanna Covers May Issue Of Elle, Says “I Don’t Have Anything To Hide” It doesn’t take a genius to figure that RihRih loves living dangerously But now her management is worried she’ll do something rash — like record an album with Chris Brown: Rihanna is on a rebellious streak and has warned her management team she won’t be kept apart from ex Chris Brown or be held back by their rules. Management firm Roc Nation, owned by Jay-Z, advised the pop superstar to stay far from Brown, but sources tell us she’s defied their orders, after putting Brown’s voice on her suggestive song “Birthday Cake,” then tweeting about Brown and his girlfriend Karrueche Tran. “Her management banned her from reuniting with Chris, but she said she’ll do whatever the hell she wants to,” said a source, adding, “Rihanna is rebelling. She says they have been working her too hard and she wants some time to herself. They fear she’ll secretly record an album with Brown, just to defy them.” But another source said: “Rihanna never takes time off. She’s got tons of work lined up, including movie projects.” Recording an album seems a bit extreme, Karrueche definitely won’t like that either — but we don’t think it really makes sense. But at the end of the day we wonder if she really even likes Chris like that or if it’s all just for the thrill of doing what she’s not supposed to do. In the upcoming May issue of ELLE Magazine, RihRih’s cover story is full of quotes about how much she loves doing what she wants to do and getting the biggest possible thrill out of life: In Elle’s May cover story, Rihanna says of any backlash over a re-association with Brown: “People end up wasting their time on the blogs ranting away, and that’s all right . . . Because tomorrow I’m still going to be the same person. I’m still going to do what I want to do.” She says following the fallout from Brown assaulting her, she was given an opportunity to express herself more openly: “That was my opening . . . one less skeleton in the closet, one less burden, one less secret; now you know that, so you can say what you want . . . I don’t have anything to hide.” Rihanna also talks about the thrill of risk-taking, which she did by swimming with sharks (literally) in Hawaii for her film debut “Battleship.” “When you know you like a guy, or when you’ve been in love . . . That’s the same feeling you have swimming with sharks,” she tells Elle. “That’s the same feeling you have when doing anything daring, risky, spontaneous, or unpredictable. I think having those butterflies is the closest thing to being in love . . . And when you play it safe, you don’t feel anything at all.” Well damn… Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Yes, Bobby Brown really might write a memoir about his life with Whitney Houston and – brace yourselves for this revelation, folks! – a source says the tell-all would pretty much just profit the washed-up artist. “He’s not going to address anything that will cast him in a negative light,” an insider tells E! News of Brown’s book . “And that’s why people, I don’t think, will buy the book. They’re going to see that it will most likely be completely self-serving.” From leaving Whitney’s funeral early, to making odd in-concert statements about himself and his wife , Bobby has been less than respectful since Houston died, many believe. What great revelations is he going to have in this book , the same E! mole wonders, adding that Brown would just be after a paycheck if he went through with the plan and: “Don’t forget he signed the confidentiality agreement [when he and Whitney divorced]. He may have to get somebody else to write it. A ghostwriter. What am I saying? He’s not going to be writing it anyway, of course he’ll get somebody else to do it.”
