By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown Photo: MTV News Aside from his latest controversy , Chris Brown is back with F.A.M.E. , which stands for “Forgiving All My Enemies” and “Fans Are My Everything.” On the new album, Brown has some choice features from stars such as Lil Wayne, Tyga, Ludacris and Justin Bieber. “Working with Wayne is always incredible,” said Brown, whose “Beautiful People” video premiered Tuesday on MTV’s “The Seven.” “I’ve had Wayne on every single album I’ve done. … Being able to work with these guys is incredible. I build most of my collaborations off of just the relationships that I’ve built with these guys over the years and then new relationships, like Justin Bieber.” Brown told MTV News that it was awesome getting Bieber on board for “Next 2 You.” Brown became interested in featuring the teen star on his album after the duo worked on the remix to Bieber’s track “Up,” which was featured on Never Say Never – The Remixes . “Being able to collab with [Bieber] was great,” Brown said. “He’s a young, energetic cat, so being able to work with him, with the fanbase he has, was incredible. New video debuts same day Brown made headlines for ‘Good Morning America’ outburst. By James Montgomery Chris Brown in “Beautiful People” Photo: Jive Chris Brown’s new album is called F.A.M.E., an acronym for “Forgiving All My Enemies.” Of course, as his actions on Tuesday’s (March 22) “Good Morning America” proved, if his post-show outburst was even half as extreme as reports have made it out to be, he might not have taken that title to heart just yet. The timing of his behavior following “GMA” was problematic, to say the least: Not only did it occur on the day F.A.M.E. hit stores, but it also happened hours before he was set to premiere the video for his latest single, “Beautiful People,” during MTV’s “The Seven.” Somewhat understandably, given the backlash that followed his alleged window-smashing at ABC’s studios, Brown canceled his appearance on MTV’s show, but the “People” video premiered nonetheless. Much like everything involving Brown since his 2009 assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna , how you feel about him will probably affect how you feel about his new clip. Some may see its scenes of Brown hamming it up in the studio with the likes of Pharrell and Timbaland as nothing short of garish, while others could view them as glimpses into a man who has made his penance and now is trying very hard to move on with his life. His detractors can never forgive him for his past indiscretions, and his supporters — having already forgiven him — want nothing more than to see him smile occasionally. And both sides are right. So while the “Beautiful People” video is sure to be divisive, the song most certainly is not. Because it’s totally great: a throbbing, nocturnal knocker of a track that’s dipped in equal parts swagger and studio lacquer. Producer Benny Benassi leaves his clubby touches all over the song, infusing it with house thump and a touch of Italo-boogie. Brown’s vocals are almost an afterthought; smoothed out in the studio and downright supple, his voice is almost like the lightweight chassis atop a very expensive, very fast foreign sports car. It speeds along and handles beautifully. It’s not a stretch to call “Beautiful People” not only one of the year’s most unexpected singles, but also one of the best. Of course, some folks might not even listen to it or watch the video. That’s a shame, but in some regards, I can’t blame them. Then again, sometimes it’s best to leave the judgment up to the court of public opinion and focus instead on the product at hand. Love him or hate him, with “Beautiful People,” Chris Brown has proven that he’s not going anywhere for a while, whether you like it or not. What do you think of Brown’s new video? Chris Brown , all rubbery limbs and sporting a Mars Blackmon-inspired bicycle cap, shows off some fleet-footed footwork in his new “Look at Me Now” video. With looks from Young Money captain Lil Wayne and a fire-breathing Busta Rhymes, a pile of ’90s-era baggy sweats and tees, a series of ferocious dance battles, as well as an ode to those classic Nike/Jordan spots, the dizzying clip leaves you breathless. And that’s exactly how Chris wanted it. ” ‘Look at Me Now’ is kind of like my first rap, rap video,” Chris laughed when he sat down with MTV News on Friday. “I wanted to do like old school, not really old school but, like, back-in-the-day [style].” Back in the day, for the 21-year-old, meant reviving 1990s staples like “big baggy clothes” and “a lot of art, graffiti.” “I tried to blend all of those components into one and make it fun and exciting,” he told us. With the song’s swirling production (courtesy of Diplo and Jean Baptiste) setting the breakneck pace, the Collin Tilley-directed video for “Look at Me Now” lets C.Breezy showcase his inner-MC — Brown instructs his doubters to “say hi” to a section of his anatomy some fans may now be all too familiar with — but it also lets him play with his budding Renaissance Man thing, capturing Chris as crooner, dancer and artist. In several hilarious frames, the FA.M.E. singer turns up cheesing in the horn-rimmed glasses and baseball jersey that were the signature of director Spike Lee’s Mars Blackmon creation, a bespectacled superfan who hawked Jordans in the early-’90s for Nike. In those vintage ads, Mars set out to decode just what made baller Michael Jordan “the best player in the universe” — eventually ruling out the extra-long shorts, the haircut, etc., and zeroing in one element: “it’s gotta be the shoes.” “I kind of did the Mars Blackmon outfit with the Brooklyn [hat] and the whole [outfit], I always was a fan of that and that was always fresh to me when I saw Spike Lee with Jordan,” Chris explained. “So I was like, man, i’mma do that outfit just to pay tribute to him.” Of course, Chris didn’t pull off his first official hip-hop vid on his own. Assists from Lil Tunechi and Busta give the visual added heft. And Brown said the song, like the video, works because the collabos are organic. (Weezy’s a longtime collaborator and Busta’s rapid-fire flow feels tailor-made for the track.) “Working with Wayne is always incredible. I’ve had Wayne on every single album I’ve done,” he added. “Being able to work with these guys is incredible,” he said of Bus and Wayne. “I think I build most of my collaborations off of the relationships that I built with these guys over the years.” Chris’ new album, FA.M.E., drops on Tuesday.
