Also in Thursday afternoon’s round up of film news, The Weinstein Company has scored a round of financing for a division. The Indian International Film Festival sets its lineup, while Steven Soderbergh’s Liberace pic picks up a new actor. And West Memphis Three also adds more cast. The Weinstein Company’s SIIB Division Closes $225M in New Financing TWC’s Strategic Initiatives, Investments and Banking (SIIB) division has closed $225 million in new financings between two revolving multi-bank facilities. A $150 million domestic-focused revolving facility was closed. An additional $75 million revolving new media facility was structured and agented by UBS Investment Bank. OneWest Bank will serve as Collateral Administrator for this UBS Facility. The two will play what TWC calls, “an instrumental role in continuing TWC’s transformation as a mini-major film studio now largely supported by institutional financing.” Indianapolis International Film Festival Sets 110 Films The 9th annual event includes titles ranging from selections featured at Sundance, Tribeca and Cannes film festivals to newly discovered regional filmmaking. Films will compete for Best Of in their respective categories, as well as Audience Awards and a Grand Jury Award for best film of the fest, which carries a $1,000 prize purse. Around the ‘net… Barbra Streisand to Direct First Film in 16 Years She’s agreed to direct Skinny and Cat , a love story about writer Erskine Caldwell and photojournalist Margaret Bourke White, starring Colin Firth and Cate Blanchett. The film will be independently financed and set for January 2013, Showbiz 411 reports . Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus Finds Director Vet commercial director Bryan Buckley will make his feature debut with Lionsgate/Summit on the project starring Reese Witherspoon. The film is based on the John Gray self-help best seller. The shoot is planned for January, Deadline reports . Tom Papa Joins Steven Soderbergh’s HBO Liberace Pic Papa will play the late performer’s long time friend, Ray Arnett. Michael Douglas will play Liberace, who died in 1987. Shooting will begin in L.A. next month, Deadline reports . West Memphis Three Movie Adds Bruce Greenwood and Michael Gladis They will join Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth in the film that will be directed by Atom Egoyan. The project spotlights the true story of three teens wrongly convicted of murdering three boys in 1993, THR reports .

Robert Zemeckis’ Flight Trailer: Denzel Washington Runs Into Turbulence

After riding train after train and whatnot , Denzel Washington is back navigating giant hunks of careening metal in Robert Zemeckis ‘s Flight , which marks the director’s return to live-action filmmaking after a decade spent trying (in vain, IMO) to conquer the uncanny valley. So how well do director and star succeed in piquing your interest in a movie about an airline pilot (Washington) who saves a plane full of passengers only to have his heroism — and drinking habits — come under scrutiny in the aftermath? Below, watch the first trailer for Flight , which boasts a stellar cast surrounding Washington that includes Bruce Greenwood, Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly, John Goodman, and Melissa Leo. It’s not all that revealing, which is a good thing in this age of spoiler-happy marketing, though there’s potential for some big unknown twist to rock us to our core in the last act. So what’s there to look forward to? Washington as a normal dude trying to figure it out, I suppose — or as a hero hiding some dark secret, which would be more interesting — and, of course, the sight of Denzel rolling a freaking airplane on top of some houses , or whatever. That should be enough for me. And yet… I’m just lukewarm on Flight . Is there any reason to see it besides the fact that it’s Denzel being Denzel and Zemeckis maybe-recapturing the knack for storytelling on display in his best live-action hits? Head to Apple for the trailer premiere. Then again, I am about to get on a flight tomorrow morning, so forgive me if I’m not too juiced for a movie about the one airplane that falls apart in the sky for no good reason. Flight synopsis: In this action-packed mystery thriller, Academy Award winner Denzel Washington stars as Whip Whitaker, a seasoned airline pilot who miraculously crash-lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, saving nearly every soul on board. After the crash, Whip is hailed as a hero, but as more is learned, more questions than answers arise as to who or what was really at fault, and what really happened on that plane? ‘The River’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics say the found-footage TV series, while scary, suffers from poor writing and one really annoying character. By Eric Ditzian Eloise Mumford and Joe Anderson in “The River” Photo: American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. “The River” carries a sense of pop culture inevitably in its shaky, grainy found-footage escapades. After “Paranormal Activity” resuscitated the horror subgenre with its wide release in 2009 — grossing $193 million worldwide and spawning two sequels and a slew of variously successful imitators — it was only a matter of time until found-footage scares arrived on network TV. Thankfully, that arrival comes courtesy of “Paranormal” mastermind Oren Peli . “The River,” premiering on ABC on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET, borrows liberally from Peli’s hit film franchise (as well as from past network hits like “Lost”) in a midseason replacement that sees a crew venture into the Amazon to locate a missing explorer named Emmet Cole. The question, of course, is whether “The River” can replicate the successes of its wildly popular forbearers (or, perhaps, the been-there-found-that disappointments of other genre copycats). Critics, at this point, are split. Some have found the series satisfyingly scary. Others have faulted the show’s weak character development. For those critiques and more, read on for a deep dive into reviews of “The River.” The Storyline “[‘The River’] is a nifty supernatural adventure tale set in mysterious river-riven regions of the uncharted Amazon. Topographically speaking, it is ‘Lost’ inside-out. The story is this: Emmet Cole (Bruce Greenwood), a world-beloved, globe-trotting ‘Crocodile Hunter’ sort, has gone missing. There’s magic out there … you just need to ford “The River” to find it. “Paranormal Activity” mastermind Oren Peli is back with another found-footage fright-fest, but this time, it’s playing out on the small screen in the form of “The River,” a new supernatural series debuting on ABC on Tuesday (February 7). “The River” stars “Star Trek” actor Bruce Greenwood as Dr. Emmet Cole, a television personality and famed explorer who vanishes without a trace while seeking magic in the depths of the Amazon. Six months later, new evidence regarding Emmet’s whereabouts comes to light, leading his wife, Tess (Leslie Hope), and son, Lincoln (Joe Anderson), to the Amazon with a television crew in tow. What they find there is darker and more inexplicable than anything they expected — and as promised by the missing Dr. Cole, there is indeed magic out there, deadlier than the rabbits-from-hats variety. Actress Eloise Mumford, who stars on the show as adventurer Lena Landry, dropped by MTV News this week to talk about the premiere of “The River,” and why it’s a television event that fans of found-footage absolutely can’t miss. “It’s ‘Paranormal Activity’ meets ‘X-Files,’ ” she told MTV about the premise of the show. “The conceit is that it’s all shot as a TV show — you’re aware that it’s not just a TV show on TV, but that the whole thing is being shot as a TV show within a TV show. It’s really fun, because it’s all shot as a documentary. You see the camera guys; they’re characters. Sometimes we had up to 13 cameras rolling at once. It’s groundbreaking TV in that sense. It’s taking this age of technology right now and taking full advantage of that.” Indeed, though found-footage is a prominent part of pop culture today, it’s a device that’s rarely explored in scripted genre television. Mumford said that the unique perspective will help set “The River” apart from other shows currently on TV. “If you’re flipping through the channels, you’re going to go, ‘Whoa!’ It’s such a different look,” she said. “And the storytelling of it is so much faster. There’s really unique points of view in all of it.” “It’s in line with the youth of today,” she added of what makes “The River” relevant. “We’re used to shooting our own stuff on our cellphones. Russell Crowe In Talks to Play Jor-El in Man of Steel

It’s not Sunday , but that doesn’t mean Man of Steel casting news can’t slip out from Hollywood. Variety reports that Russell Crowe is in talks to play Superman’s father, Jor-El, in the Zack Snyder-directed reboot. Marlon Brando famously portrayed Jor-El in Superman: The Movie , and earned roughly $12 million for his ten minutes in the film . Here’s guessing Crowe won’t be that financially lucky. ‘Super 8’ Burning Questions: J.J. Abrams Has Answers!

We take our lingering questions straight to the director. By Eric Ditzian J.J. Abrams Photo: MTV News After months of mystery, “Super 8” finally arrived in theaters over the weekend. The secretive marketing campaigns seemed to have paid off, with positive reviews and experts predicting lasting box-office success . With all that film-going satisfaction in mind, the way J.J. Abrams crafted his nostalgic thriller left plenty of lingering questions to be answered. So when the esteemed master of mystery stopped by our MTV News headquarters on Tuesday, we asked him our most burning “Super 8” questions. ( Spoilers ahead! ) Hanging Humans MTV News : When we go into the creature’s cave, we see the humans hanging upside down. Are they hanging upside down because he’s saving them to nosh on later? J.J. Abrams : I love anything involving aliens and noshing. First of all, a man’s got to eat, let’s be honest. Part of it is that he’s a hungry guy and he’s been through a lot, and part of it is that there’s a second connection that he can make with people, so he’s sort of used them as sort of a library of information of what he needs to know about the human technology to use it. Zombie Movies MTV News : The zombie movie that the kids made — why a zombie movie? Why not monsters? Vampires? Why zombies? Abrams : There are a series of films that George Romero did — “Night of the Living Dead,” “Dawn of the Dead” — and I thought that that would be something that could be a big influence on the kid who makes the movies, and so he’s sort of trying to create a movie the way that George Romero, his sort of hero in the movie, did with his zombie films. MTV News : Is there a director’s cut, maybe something we might see on the DVD of their zombie film? Abrams : There’s definitely a movie that’s three times as long, but it’s probably four times as bad. Kiss MTV News : Why no kiss between Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney? Abrams : You know, I don’t know who wanted to see the kiss between Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney, but to me … these were kids who, their affection for each other didn’t necessarily need to be played out with a kiss. But I think that hopefully you get the sense that their feelings for each other are profound. Cameo MTV News : We hear Bruce Greenwood did the motion capture from the creature. Abrams : Bruce Greenwood came in and he did some motion capture, body capture and also facial capture for the performance of the creature. A lot of it we ended up using and a lot of it we ended up having to animate and change because, frankly, when we saw the creature move, sometimes it felt like we had to change it up to make it work better. The PG-13 F-Bomb MTV News : It was a great use of the PG-13 f—. Was there always going to be the one F-bomb you threw? Did you go through different iterations? Abrams : It made me laugh, the idea that this guy who was such a sort of dink at the beginning and the fact that you know he was trying to sell these kids pot, he’s trying to hook up with his sister and he’s just an utter loser working at the camera store. The idea that this guy kind of gets roped into this adventure and sort of starts to really care about these kids. It makes you sort of like the guy, and so his showing up and seeing these kids are still alive and being happy about it and then seeing that this bus has been overturned after this attack of the creature. That reaction that he had just felt like the reaction he would have. And I was hoping that we’d get past the rating and not have to lose it, and luckily we did.
