The Weekly Rising takes a closer look at the comic inspiration for Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film. By Kevin P. Sullivan Batman #497: The breaking of the Bat Photo: DC Comics Throughout his tenure as the commander of the big-screen Batman, Christopher Nolan , along with writing partners Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer, have pulled selectively from the vast library of books for inspiration in the films. “Batman Begins” borrowed a handful of elements from Frank Miller’s “Batman: Year One,” while “The Dark Knight” took some character notes from “The Long Halloween.” When it was announced that Bane would make his triumphant return as a respectable villain in the finale, ” The Dark Knight Rises ,” comic books fans were just as quick to shout “Knightfall,” in reference to the trilogy of stories that played out during 1993 and 1994. It appeared Nolan and company had found their inspiration, but what exactly would they use from those books? Bane The masked villain was the clear giveaway to “Knightfall” ‘s presence as an influence, and it’s clear why. Bane only showed up on the DC Comics scene four months before the beginning of the “Knightfall” story line, and once the show got on the road, he made his introduction count. As he appears to be in “The Dark Knight Rises,” the Bane of the comics was a hyper-intelligent behemoth of a man, capable of besting Bruce Wayne. Prison Break Part of Bane’s plan in gaining the upper hand over Batman involved releasing all of Arkham Asylum’s worst inmates on the city. Batman wears himself down, rounding up the likes of the Joker, the Scarecrow and Poison Ivy, and this series of bouts leaves him severely weakened when he finally has to face off against Bane in the Batcave, leading to the most significant scene from “Knightfall.” The Break If Bane is remembered for anything, it is the central moment of “Knightfall” when he takes a physically and mentally exhausted Bruce Wayne and breaks his back with a knee to the spine. It was a critical blow in more than one sense of the word and significantly changed the shape of the Batman titles for years to come. The scant footage we have actually seen from “The Dark Knight Rises” hints that Christian Bale ‘s Bruce Wayne does suffer some similar injury during the course of the film. He appears to be walking with a cane, and while we can’t conclusively blame Bane, the timing sure is something! Catwoman Selina Kyle’s appearance in both “Knightfall” and “The Dark Knight Rises” most likely is a coincidence, since her role in the former is not terribly significant. It does matter, however, that she attempts to help Bruce Wayne with his paralysis, demonstrating that there are many facets to her allegiances. The New Batman While Bruce Wayne was on the mend thanks to Bane’s handiwork, a new Batman, Jean-Paul Valley, took up the cowl in his absence. Since the tag line of “The Dark Knight Rises” leaves little doubt that the “legend ends” with this final movie, fans have been pondering whether the new film will mean the death of Bruce Wayne. If that’s the case, the symbol would have to live on. A new Dark Knight would have to rise. ‘We’ll just leave right now,’ Nicky Byrne jokes when told Westlife are facing Beatles in third round of Battle of the Boy Bands. By Christina Garibaldi Westlife and The Beatles’ Paul McCartney and John Lennon Photo: Getty Images MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands is certainly heating up. We have seen some shocking eliminations throughout the first two rounds, with the Backstreet Boys , ‘NSYNC and New Kids on the Block all making early exits in the competition. And as we head into the Final Four on Wednesday, fans will be tirelessly voting for their favorites to move on, hoping to land a spot in the championship matchup. A clear fan favorite in this battle has been Irish boy band Westlife . The group so far has taken down the Backstreet Boys and O-Town, but in the Elite Eight round, they are up against the original boy band, the Beatles . We spoke to Westlife member Nicky Byrne via Skype from Dublin, Ireland, as the group rehearses for their final farewell tour, and he told us what he thought their chances were for beating their latest opponent. “We’ll just leave now, we’ll just leave right now,” Byrne laughed when told he was facing the Beatles. “The only thing we have in our favor is that our fanbase would still be very, I suppose, relatively young and want for Westlife to win. I mean, it goes without saying the Beatles are the ultimate boy band and nobody is ever going to take that crown.” Westlife still have a good chance of advancing to the next round. And if they continue to maintain momentum, they could ultimately face the new wave of boy bands, which Byrne admits he is a fan of. “You’ve got the Wanted coming through and One Direction , and it’s brilliant for them. I’ve met the guys, both bands, lovely guys, an Irish guy in each band, which is great,” Byrne said. “It’s brilliant for pop music. The Wanted, they’re supporting our stadium shows here in Ireland, so they’ll be our support band, so that’s pretty cool. I suppose a little bit of me probably thinks I wish I was 20 again to do it all over again. But you have to hold your hands up — we’ve had a wonderful time and it’s time to pass the reins on to someone else.” Voting for the Elite Eight in MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Wednesday, May 2. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting. Tune in to AMTV and MTV Hits for their boy-band video takeovers each day and make sure to spread the word on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB and like us on Facebook for updates! Batman fans, the wait is over! Warner Bros. Pictures has finally released their first official trailer for the highly anticipated The Dark Knight Rises. Sadly, this will be director Christopher Nolan’s epic conclusion to the Batman trilogy. Industry rumor suggests that the studio may decide to reboot the franchise. While there isn’t a confirmed synopsis, the presence of Bane indicates Nolan may be leaning towards DC Comics’ ”Knightfall” story arc as inspiration. In the 1993 storyline, Bruce Wayne (Batman) suffers burnout and is systematically assaulted and crippled by a super steroid enhanced genius (Bane). Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman. The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake. Returning to the main cast, Oscar winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) reprises the role of Lucius Fox. “The Dark Knight Rises” comes to a theater near you July 20, 2012. New trailer hints that all is not well in Gotham City eight years after ‘The Dark Knight.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan Tom Hardy as Bane in the new “Dark Knight Rises” trailer Photo: Warner Bros. Some lucky Batman fans got a chance to check out the brand-new trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” over the weekend, and now Apple has the first theatrical trailer for the entire world to see. The new preview gives us our best look yet at Gotham City eight years after the end of “The Dark Knight,” and things aren’t going very well. Gordon’s tenure as commissioner may be coming to an end. Selina Kyle warns Bruce of a storm on the horizon, and Bane shows a complete disregard for football field maintenance. Here are the five key scenes from the brand-new “Dark Knight Rises” trailer. Old Man Wayne While you may have watched the bootleg of the trailer a dozen times online over the weekend, a lot of the trailer’s details didn’t translate from the pirated copy. The most intriguing detail has to be the reflection in the dish cover. It clearly shows Bruce Wayne walking toward it with a cane. Spy footage from the set hinted that an injured Wayne would have a cane, but this is the first concrete proof. Is this Bane’s work, and how badly is Wayne hurt? This could be the end of Batman that’s hinted at in the trailer. Where in the World Is Bruce Wayne? The scene from the trailer that remains largely a mystery is the one where Wayne enters the hall of staircases and asks what the chanting means. We haven’t seen anything like this setting in the series yet, but Wayne’s clothes resemble the clothes he wears in the early scenes of “Batman Begins,” during his stint in the League of Shadows. We’ve all heard that the final film in Christopher Nolan ‘s trilogy will double-back and cover some territory from the first film. Is this our first look at the return of the League of Shadows? Are You Ready for Some Foootbaaa … OH SH–! Clearly the scene everyone will be talking about, in the football stadium, Nolan tries his hand at making a disaster movie. Nothing in the series so far compares to the earthquake in the stadium in terms of destruction. Bane succeeds where other villains haven’t, and this more or less confirms the presence of the much-discussed earthquake machine. While many had their doubts, no one can deny that Nolan handles an otherwise outlandish concept with a deft and cool hand. Now imagine that in IMAX! Oh Hey, It’s Tali, I Mean, Miranda Tate There she is, the most mysterious of the new characters, Miranda Tate. When Marion Cotillard signed on to re-team with Nolan, people cried foul. The press release may have said Miranda Tate, dutiful Wayne Enterprises employee, but hard-core fans smelled a red herring. This is the first time we’re actually seeing Cotillard, but the trailer doesn’t offer much. Who is Miranda Tate? It’s clear we’ll have to wait to find out. Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-BAT-WING Photos from the set gave us glimpses at Batman’s new aerial ride, the Batwing, but seeing it in action is a whole other monster. I can’t even begin to wrap my head around what that scene is going to be like. We know that several tumblers are involved. Bane is there, and at some point, Batman unleashes the Batwing on everyone. Even though fans knew about the Batpod before “The Dark Knight” hit theaters, its reveal ranked among the film’s best moments. Expect the same treatment for the Batwing. Debris rains down what appear to be crumbling Gotham City buildings in first poster from Christopher Nolan’s Batman threequel. By Eric Ditzian “The Dark Knight Rises” teaser poster Photo: Warner Bros. Pictures In December 2009, a teaser poster for Christopher Nolan’s “Inception” hit the Web. It featured a row of skyscrapers looming above disastrous floodwaters and the promise that the sci-fi flick was the brainchild of “the director of ‘The Dark Knight.’ ” That image, it seems, became something of an inspiration for the brand-new teaser poster for Nolan’s third “Batman” film, “The Dark Knight Rises.” The new poster focuses on another collection of buildings, presumably in Bruce Wayne’s hometown, Gotham City. And once again, there is an ominous air of destruction in the urban environment: The buildings appear to be crumbling, debris raining downward — a stark visual contrast to the film title’s single tweak since the previous installment: the addition of the word “rises.” None of this is to suggest the “Dark Knight Rises” poster is some “Inception” knock-off; Nolan’s beloved “Batman” films hardly need to draft off his Oscar-nominated 2010 dream-heist flick. There are, of course, as many differences as there are similarities between the two. First and foremost, in the “Dark Knight Rises” poster, the tops of the buildings outline the unmistakable form of Batman’s symbol. And whereas Leonardo DiCaprio is front and center in the “Inception” poster (and up to his knees in flood waters), Christian Bale as Batman or Bruce Wayne is nowhere to be seen in the new poster. For now, the only person we’ve officially seen in character is Tom Hardy as Bane . In May, a photo of Bane — shot from behind, a menacing mask over his head — popped up online after Warner Bros. launched a viral marketing campaign. The poster debut comes just days before we’re reportedly set to get our first glimpse of the “Dark Knight Rises” teaser trailer, which is supposed to debut in front of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” when it opens on Friday. With a reported running time of one minute and 33 seconds, hopefully, there will be peeks not only at Bane in motion, but Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle (and possibly in full Catwoman gear). But who knows? Production only kicked off in May, so it’s anybody’s guess how much footage Nolan will deliver in the trailer. If the first “Inception” trailer is any indication, we’ll peep a lot of footage, but likely remain clueless as to what the whole freaking thing is about. And that’s just how we like it.
