Jennifer Aniston’s Box Office Poison Infects TVs Too

Jennifer Aniston’s much-ballyhooed guest appearance on Cougar Town was similar to her recent string of theatrical releases: Disappointing. The season premiere of the Courteney Cox sitcom — which featured Aniston as a psychiatrist — drew in a little over 8 million viewers. That’s down from the 11 million people who tuned in to the series premiere last September, and also represents a significant drop from lead-in Modern Family , which was watched by 12.6 million viewers. Don’t worry, Jen: There’s always radio. [ Us ]

Malin Åkerman on Romantics, Romcoms and Her Surprising Truth About Improv

When we all last heard from Malin Åkerman, she was preparing for the hometown premiere of her fiery drama The Bang Bang Club in Toronto. But for at least one more weekend, she’s keeping an eye on her darling The Romantics as it expands into limited wide release. The ensemble film features the Swedish-Canadian actress as Tripler, one of several college pals reuniting for the marriage of Lila (Anna Paquin) and Tom (Josh Duhamel) — over the simmering objection of Tom’s ex Laura (Katie Holmes).

Dax Shepard’s How-To-Guide: Getting Banned From a Talk Show

Sometimes showing up for a talk show interview under the influence won’t hurt your career (see: Danny DeVito, Ben Affleck, Bruce Willis, et al. ), but other times — say, when you’re just starting to get steady work on-camera — showing up drunk for a late night segment can get you blacklisted by one of the most powerful P.M. personalities. Just ask Dax Shepard, who learned that lesson the hard way.

Justin Long Shares His ‘Die Hard 5’ Ideas

‘It’s going to be Gabourey Sidibe and Bruce teaming up, finally,’ Long jokes. By Kara Warner Justin Long Photo: Jason Merritt/Getty Images The last time we heard any news on “Die Hard 5,” Bruce Willis assured us that an official green-light for the film was “imminent.” Given that small but hopeful tidbit, when we caught up with Willis’ “Live Free or Die Hard” co-star Justin Long recently, we had to ask whether or not the “Going the Distance” star had yet been approached to reprise his role in the fifth film. “I had a meeting recently at Fox about doing a romantic [comedy],” Long recalled. “And the guy in the office next door, he was in charge of the new ‘Die Hard,’ [so] I said, ‘Do you mind if I pop my head in?’ So I met him and I was like, ‘Ummm?’ ” the actor explained, gesturing with his hands in a motion that suggested “What about me?” “He was equally vague in his gesture back to me,” Long said. “So I didn’t get a good feeling that I was going to be a part of the imminent ‘Die Hard.’ I don’t know if I’m going to get my hands on it.” He added, “I would love to.” Whether the film happens with or without Long is still up for debate. Regardless, Long offered up some unique ideas regarding a possible storyline for the fifth film. “For a while, there was talk of, they were going to combine ‘Die Hard’ with ’24,’ ” Long said. “It was going to be Kiefer Sutherland’s character in it [to which we responded with a very suspicious, raised brow]. I’m not kidding!” Long insisted. “I think there was a script that had been imminent,” he said seriously — and then veered off course completely. “Now it’s going to be ‘Die Preciously Hard,’ so it’s going to be Gabourey Sidibe and Bruce teaming up, finally,” Long joked. Perfect. Bruce Willis and Gabourey Sidibe in a “Die Hard” movie … it’s about time! “That’s what the fans are saying, it’s about time! It’s ‘Die Hard Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire.’ ” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Time Compiles ‘Best Viral Campaign Ads of 2010’, Pans Most of the Republican Entries

It was inevitable that someone with enough time on their hands would compile a list of the best viral campaign video ads of 2010 . There sure have been some doozies this year, so I can’t fault Time magazine for including hits like “Demon Sheep” and the Dale Peterson ad in their top 20 list. That said, of the 15 Republican ads in the list, most were panned by Time staffers. By contrast, two Democrats’ ads — Rep. Tom Perreillo (Va.) and  Sen. Pat Leahy (Vt.) primary opponent Dan Freilich — were panned,  yet neither candidate’s Democratic affiliation was mentioned in the blurbs about the ads. By contrast, Democratic Rep. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin (S.D.), who’s presenting herself to voters as a fiscal conservative , was praised for an ad featuring her toddler son, and Time’s FeiFei Sun cheered Colorado Democratic gubernatorial nominee John Hickenlooper for his “Clean Campaign” in which he humorously promised to eschew negative campaign ads. Sun did get in a few digs at the infamous Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) , whose anti-Republican attack ad she labeled as “hyperbolic,” but she also joked that James Cameron should direct feature-length versions of his campaign ads.  By contrast, a Republican primary candidate hoping to spar against Grayson in November, Dan Fanelli, was roundly denounced by writer Katy Steinmetz for his “terrorist profiling ad”: We can’t tell if Florida congressional candidate Dan Fanelli is being serious with this ad. He opens with some pretty intense racial profiling he points to a nerdy white guy and a stacked Arab guy, and asks which one looks like a terrorist. Then he moves on to deluded narcissism. Grinning, Fanelli approaches the camera and says, “Let’s face it. If a good-looking, ripped guy without much hair was flying airplanes into the Twin Towers, I’d have no problem being pulled out of line at the airport.” Sorry, Dan; you might be as bald as Bruce Willis, but you’re lacking in just about every other department.

Justin Long ‘Would Love To’ Star In ‘Die Hard 5’

‘I don’t know if I’m going to get my hands on it,’ he laughs about the Bruce Willis franchise. By Kara Warner Justin Long Photo: MTV News In addition to having some wacky moments, Bruce Willis dropped some exciting tidbits on MTV News at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con, revealing, for one, that “Die Hard 5” is “imminent.” When we caught up with his “Die Hard With a Vengeance” co-star Justin Long, we asked him how he might be involved in the imminent, as Willis described it, fifth installment of the misadventures of John McClane. Apparently, Long needed a quick vocabulary lesson before responding. “Nice try, Bruce, for making up a word. I think he meant emasculate,” Long joked while promoting his September 3 flick “Going the Distance.” “No, I heard it was imminent and as soon as I looked up the word, I got excited.” But Long said his excitement was unfortunately short-lived, his mood tempered somewhat by what he said was an awkward exchange with a film studio executive. “I had a meeting recently at Fox about doing a romantic [comedy],” Long explained. “And the guy in the office next door, he was in charge of the new ‘Die Hard,’ [so] I said, ‘Do you mind if I pop my head in?’ So I met him and I was like, ‘Ummm?’ ” the actor recalled, gesturing with his hands in a motion that suggested “what about me?” “He was equally vague in his gesture back to me,” Long said. “So I didn’t get a good feeling that I was going to be a part of the imminent ‘Die Hard.’ I don’t know if I’m going to get my hands on it.” He added, “I would love to.” With or without Long, it seems a decision about whether the film will actually happen is still up for debate. What do you think about Long’s character coming back for a fifth “Die Hard” movie? Tell us in the comments!
