B.o.B’s ‘Nothin’ On You’: From Near-Miss To Grammy Nominee

Record of the Year contender almost didn’t make its way to B.o.B. By James Montgomery B.o.B Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Perhaps the most remarkable thing about B.o.B’s “Nothin’ On You” was not its chart-topping success, its earnestness or the fact that it served as an introductory course in two of the year’s biggest artists. It’s the fact that the song wasn’t meant for B.o.B at all. Yes, before the song — which is nominated for three Grammys , including Record of the Year — found its way to B.o.B, it was originally intended for Lupe Fiasco. Seems the folks at Atlantic Records felt that it would be a perfect fit for the Chicago MC, and they insisted that its producers, the Smeezingtons, send it their way. But, as fate would have it, one of the men responsible for shaping B.o.B’s career intervened. And the rest was history. “I was actually working on a session in Chung King [Studios], and [Atlantic Records chairman] Craig Kallman called me during that session with that particular track to work on it for Lupe Fiasco,” Jim Jonsin, who signed B.o.B to his Rebel Rock imprint, told MTV News in May. “I told Craig, ‘I like the song a lot. It’s a smash and could be somebody’s single. But it’s not Lupe’s record. I need this record for B.o.B. Please give this record to B.o.B.’ I guess they went through whoever they went through, convinced whoever they needed to, and it got to B.o.B.” Turns out, Jonsin’s instincts were right. “Nothin’ On You” found its way to B.o.B, and would head to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in May 2010, where it stayed for two consecutive weeks. Bouyed by the success of the single, B.o.B’s debut record, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, would open at #1 on the albums chart, and 2010 officially had its first breakout hip-hop star. And if the whole situation seems a bit, well, magical, you’re not alone. Seems that even the Smeezingtons — Bruno Mars, Phillip Lawrence and Ari Levine — were shocked by the fortuitous series of events that led to “Nothin’ ” topping the charts, and they admitted as much to MTV News. “Me and Phil always had that hook,” said Mars, who, of course, used the song to launch his own successful solo career . “So one day, our other partner … Ari, he walked into the studio and said he programmed the drums [over]. It had this old-school hip-hop beat. I said, ‘Gimme the piano,’ and that was the first thing I started playing. Magically, that melody worked with this track we were doing.” Of course, B.o.B would go on to score more hits on his own — the ubiquitous “Airplanes,” his duet with Paramore’s Hayley Williams chief among them — one could argue that without the success of “Nothin’ On You,” none of those achievements would have been possible. You can chalk all of it up to magic, but, as he heads into Sunday’s 53rd Grammy Awards, B.o.B prefers to give credit to the song’s sweet-natured sincerity, which connected with fans in a way a lot of songs just don’t. And, really, he’s right about that too. “Introducing B.o.B or Bobby Ray, it takes more than one song to do it,” he said. “But I feel like this song is really genuine and really sincere, so I feel good about people finding out about me through ‘Nothin’ On You.’ ” Are you rooting for “Nothin’ On You” to win Record of the Year at the Grammys? Bruno Mars accepted a plea deal allowing him to avoid jail time for his cocaine arrest last year, provided the singer keeps his nose clean for the next year. Mars and the Clark County (Nev.) D.A. struck a deal in which Mars would plead guilty to possession of a controlled substance stemming from his arrest. The charge will be expunged if he stays out of trouble for 12 months. Bruno Mars in Court Mars must also has complete 200 hours of community service. It all becomes official and his probationary period begins on his next court date, Feb. 14. Lady Gaga Keeps MTV News’ Top 25 Songs Of 2010 Rolling

Kanye West, Rihanna and more clock in for 17 through 11. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images On Thursday, MTV News began our countdown of the Top 25 Songs of 2010 , revealing our picks for 25 through 18. On Friday (December 3), we’re unveiling 17 through 11, a list that includes heavy-hitters like Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and B.o.B. And if seeing those kinds of names outside the top 10 shocks you, well, you’re not alone. But in a year with so many really great songs, some tough decisions had to be made — and MTV News staffers were the ones making the calls. Over the past month, we asked them to come up with their own lists of their 25 favorite songs of 2010; they didn’t have to be singles and, really, they didn’t even have to be released in 2010. We were looking for any song that made an impact this year, be it commercially, culturally or critically. When we finally received all the lists, we had proof of just what a year it was: More than 300 different songs from some 200 artists were chosen, and it was up to a select few to tabulate the results and create a top 25. Using a point system — the #1 song on each list received 25 points, the #25 song received 1 point — we spent the next few weeks whittling down the lists. Finally, after some frantic addition (math was never our strong suit) and some rather spirited debate, we had our list — and we feel it’s a great one, full of songs by artists both big and small, yet all impactful in some way. It wasn’t easy, but we got it done. This week, we’ll roll out 25 through 11, and then on Monday, we’ll begin to unveil our top 10. Oh, and we’re interested in seeing your lists too. Feel free to add them in the comments below. But now, without further ado, let’s look back on the year that was, by continuing our countdown of the Top 25 Songs of 2010: 17. Rihanna, “Rude Boy” Total Points : 65 A straight-up sex jam from the formerly demure Ms. Fenty, “Rude Boy” was the third single from the Rated R album, but unlike most everything else on the disc, it’s not a morbid, morose affair. Rather, it’s full of swirling synths and rushing handclaps, jerking along on a dancehall lilt and RiRi’s newfound ragga swagger. Straying from the drama that had enveloped her life during the recording of the album, “Rude Boy” is Rihanna looking for love — or, more specifically, a man to give that love to her. And on this night, it may be you. Can you get it up? Is you big enough? No pressure or anything. 16. Lady Gaga, “Alejandro” Total Points : 77 It’s perhaps the most, uh, oddball track in Lady Gaga’s increasingly odd arsenal — in that it sounds like Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” (or an Ace of Base B-side) — so it should come as no surprise to anyone that she decided to release it as a single, complete with a nine-minute video in which she swallows a rosary and pouts like Marlene Dietrich. Sure, Katy Perry might not have liked it all that much , but the rest of us marveled at Gaga’s bravado, not only to transform a breezy ode to summertime love into a curio from the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, but to carry such a retro-leaning song all the way to the upper reaches of the Hot 100. There truly isn’t anything she can’t do. 15. Rihanna, “Only Girl (In the World)” Total Points : 90 By the time she released Loud, Rihanna was telling anyone who would listen that she was done being dire and just wanted to have some fun. And, well, there were few songs released this year as flat-out fun as “Only Girl,” a bubbly slice of club pop with — arguably — 2010’s best chorus, a super-charged, positively life-affirming thing that somehow sounded best when it was shouted very loudly from the middle of a packed dance floor. Or in the shower. The greatest pop songs work no matter where you hear them, and “Only Girl (In the World)” is most definitely a great pop song. 14. B.o.B (featuring Bruno Mars), “Nothin’ on You” Total Points : 91 The first of B.o.B’s two heart-on-his-sleeve hits, “Nothin’ on You” is a sweet, almost hokey love letter to the girls that rock both his — and crooner/producer Bruno Mars’ — world, and it’s notable not only for its downright viral level of catchiness (seriously, listen to it and see how long it takes you to start singing “Na-na-na-nothin’ on you, babe!”), but because it introduced the world to two of the year’s biggest breakout stars. They’ll travel far and wide, but B.o.B and Bruno will always come back home to you. Shout-out to girls who pay their taxes! 13. Kanye West (featuring Bon Iver, Jay-Z, Nicki Minaj and Rick Ross), “Monster” Total Points : 94 The year’s most appropriately titled track, “Monster” is a menacing, maniacal posse cut, growling along on a beastly backbeat (courtesy of King Kanye) and downright angry verses from Ross (who proudly proclaims himself to be a “fat mother—-er”), Jay (who raps about Sasquatch and whines that he doesn’t get enough loooove ), West (who would like to put your lady parts in a sarcophagus) and, most notably, Nicki (who more than stands up to her heavyweight competition; she K.O.’s them all). If most of ‘Ye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is an exploration of his madcap life, “Monster” is a look deep inside his own psyche. More terrifyingly, it’s his snarling superego. 12. B.o.B (featuring Hayley Williams), “Airplanes” Total Points : 99 Like Kanye, B.o.B isn’t afraid to point out the fact that everything in the fabulous life isn’t necessarily all that fabulous, that no matter how many ringtones you sell or how many people you surround yourself with, you’re still going to be unhappy and, ultimately, alone. So instead you spend your nights wishing on airplanes and holding your phone in your lap, hoping against hope, thinking about how that job as a sandwich artist wasn’t really all that bad, in retrospect. And then in the morning, you get up and do it all over again. Because you have to. Swoony and somber, “Airplanes” is proof that even rappers can get emo. Do people even use that word anymore? 11. Katy Perry, “Teenage Dream” Total Points : 102 The beauty of “Teenage Dream” is its simplicity: It is a song about being helplessly, head-over-heels in love and nothing more. It doesn’t matter that, at the time of this writing, Katy Perry is 26 years old, or that she’s happily married to a famous British comedian; you still believe her when she’s singing it (it probably has something to do with the way she hits the chorus: “You! Make! Me!”). Shoot, as “Glee” proved, you don’t even have to be a girl to record a convincing version of the song. “Teenage Dream” proves that, when it comes to matters of the heart, it’s always best to keep it simple — truthfully, swooningly so. MTV News’ Top 25 Songs of 2010 countdown continues Monday, when we roll out our top 10 picks. So make sure to keep checking back to see what song we’ve named #1, and don’t forget to share your picks with us in the comments below!

Bruno Mars Thrilled By Seven Grammy Nominations

‘We’re being acknowledged by the biggest,’ Mars said of his nods for performing and producing. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by James Lacsina Bruno Mars Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Each year, the Grammy Awards not only serve to recognize the best achievements in music over the past year but also help to elevate certain artists from unknowns to stars and from successes into household names. The latter will probably be true of Bruno Mars once the awards are handed out in February, as the singer and producer was nominated for a total of seven awards during Wednesday night’s “Grammy Nominations Concert Live!” show. Mars scored a handful of nominations as a performer for his vocal stylings on the chart-topping B.o.B track “Nothin’ on You” and also picked up several nominations as a member of the Smeezingtons, the writing and production trio that consists of Mars, Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine. The three are responsible for hits like Cee Lo’s “F— You” (which picked up four nominations), and the crew also picked up a nod for Producer of the Year. The Smeezingtons were rightfully thrilled at the prospect of taking home a load of hardware in February. “We don’t know how it feels yet, because we just got the word. We’re a little awkward in these situations,” Mars admitted to MTV News following the show (in which he also performed live). “But the fact is that we worked so hard this year. In a studio not too far from here, in a little shack, we’d have B.o.B in there writing ‘Nothin’ on You’ with us, or Cee Lo writing ‘F— You’ with us. The fact that it’s being acknowledged by the Grammys is incredible. It’s really making us feel like we did something. We’re being acknowledged by the biggest.” As far as which award the group is gunning for, they’re open to anything. “I’d like to win Best Dressed,” Mars joked. “Maybe Most Humorous. Or Best Kisser!” They also want the world to know that just because their status will become elevated doesn’t mean that they’re inaccessible. “The funnest part of our job is that we don’t know who we’re working with next,” Mars told MTV News. “We’re fans and students of music, and we just love to work with whoever wants to work, whoever wants to write a song. Rock, hip-hop, R&B — we just want to do music. And we’re happy just doing that.” Mars and the Smeezingtons will compete against other heavy hitters like Eminem (10 nominations), Jay-Z (six), Lady Gaga (six) and B.o.B (five) when the Grammys are handed out on Sunday, February 13, 2011. How many Grammys do you think Bruno Mars will win? Let us know in the comments! Justin Bieber, Ke$ha, Katy Perry Pick Up Platinum Certifications

Releases by Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, B.o.B, Bruno Mars also recognized by recording-industry organization RIAA. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images On Wednesday, the Recording Industry Association of America handed out their latest round of gold and platinum certifications … and if your name was Ke$ha or Justin Bieber, well, then it was a very good day for you. Ke$ha’s Animal was certified gold (meaning it passed the 500,000-sales mark) and a spate of her digital singles went multiplatinum, with “Tik Tok” being downloaded more than 5 million times and “Your Love Is My Drug” racking up another 2 million. “Blah Blah Blah” and “Take It Off” both were certified gold, meaning that, all told, she’s sold more than 8.5 million downloads to date. Bieber earned his first-ever multiplatinum award, as the RIAA certified sales of his My World 2.0 album at more than 2 million copies. “Baby,” his team-up with Ludacris, also was certified as double platinum. Wednesday also was a great day to be the Black Eyed Peas, as their massive tune “I Gotta Feeling” was certified 6-times platinum (that’s more than 6 million downloads) — making it the RIAA’s highest-ever digital-song certification. Following (somewhat) close behind the Peas were the likes of Katy Perry, B.o.B, Taio Cruz and Rihanna, who had their respective mega singles “California Gurls,” “Airplanes,” “Break Your Heart” and “Don’t Stop the Music” certified as triple platinum. Perry and Rihanna also each picked up a double-platinum certification — for “Teenage Dream” and “Rude Boy,” respectively — bringing their total hauls to more than 5 million units sold. The Bruno Mars track “Just the Way You Are” was certified platinum, giving the crooner his very first solo plaque. B.o.B’s “Magic” and former “American Idol” champ Kris Allen’s “Live Like We’re Dying” also picked up platinum certifications. Related Artists Justin Bieber Ke$ha Katy Perry
