Bruno Mars Arrest Was Over Alleged Cocaine Possession

Police say singer/songwriter had 2.6 grams of white powder on him at time of arrest. By Gil Kaufman Bruno Mars in Las Vegas Police custody Photo: LVPD More details have emerged about what led to singer/songwriter Bruno Mars ‘ arrest early Sunday morning in Las Vegas on drug-possession charges. According to a copy of the arrest document provided by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the “Just the Way You Are” singer was arrested around 1:50 a.m. at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino — where he had performed earlier in the night — for felony possession of 2.6 grams of a “white powdery substance” that tested positive as cocaine. Mars (born Peter Gene Hernandez), 23, was taken in after Las Vegas police received a narcotics call from someone at the Hard Rock. According to the report, a bathroom attendant approached a security officer at the facility to say that there was a man in a bathroom stall who might be using drugs, telling the guard that a male in the bathroom was “taking a really long time.” The attendant said he observed the suspect in a striped shirt with a “baggy of white powder substance.” The attendant and the security guard approached the suspect as he exited the stall, and the guard ordered Mars to hand over whatever narcotics he had on him. “This is when Hernandez, with his left hand, pulled out a white powder substance, which was consistent with cocaine, from his left-front jeans pocket.” When the guard asked Mars if he knew why he was being detained, the singer reportedly said, “Can I speak to you honestly, sir?” and then said he “did a foolish thing and has never used drugs before.” Mars was arrested when the substance tested positive for cocaine, and he was then transported to the Clark County Detention Center, where he was booked on a felony charge of possession of a controlled substance. A spokesperson for the Clark County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement that the case against Mars is still under review and that no charges have been filed yet. He was released from custody at 7:45 a.m. Sunday and has been ordered to return to court for his arraignment November 18. A spokesperson for Mars’ label had not released a statement on the incident at press time. Related Artists Bruno Mars

Miley Cyrus And Ashley Greene Shoot ‘LOL’ In Paris

Teen-movie queens spotted filming with Douglas Booth, Ashley Hinshaw and Lisa Esco By Jocelyn Vena Douglas Booth and Miley Cyrus on location for “LOL: Laughing Out Loud” Photo: Trago/ FilmMagic Miley Cyrus and Ashley Greene have taken the shoot for their upcoming flick “LOL: Laughing Out Loud” internationally. The ladies were photographed filming in Paris, after being spotted in Detroit earlier this summer. In stills taken on the set, Greene and Cyrus are pictured with various castmates filming “LOL,” which is due in 2011. In one photo, taken Monday (September 6), a smiling Cyrus, embraced at the waist by costar Douglas Booth, is standing alongside a pensive-looking Greene and other castmembers Ashley Hinshaw and Lina Esco. In other shots, Booth and Cyrus are snuggling on a double-decker bus, while Greene is on another bus. Booth and Cyrus also were filmed standing on a bridge chatting. Later, Cyrus, wearing a leather jacket, goes shopping with Hinshaw and Esco, and in another shot, she is alone and soaking wet, running through a puddle. Cyrus and Greene also were filmed walking arm in arm through Paris. Cyrus has said that in her post-“Hannah Montana” career , she’s looking to film more serious, mature movies, and that she intends to take a break from music to pursue her film career. “I’m working on lots of different films: drama, action, comedy,” she explained. “I like challenges, so I’m doing a little bit of everything.” “The more I make music that doesn’t truly inspire me, the more I feel like I’m blending in with everyone else,” she added. “I’m taking some time off [from music].” Given those plans, “LOL” seems like a step in the right direction. The film is about a group of young people, led by Cyrus (whose character is named Lola), who try to navigate high school peer pressures and romance in a tech-savvy world. It also stars Demi Moore as Cyrus’s mom. “She’s great,” Moore said of her co-star , “and I think that she is incredibly grounded. … [Miley] is a true professional, and she truly has a wonderful family. It really shows.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Mary J. Blige, Swizz Beatz to perform with Drake, while Bruno Mars will join B.o.B at Video Music Awards on Sunday. By Jocelyn Vena The cast of “Jersey Shore” Photo: MTV The 2010 VMAs may be going live in Los Angeles this year, but MTV viewers will get a glimpse of Seaside Heights when the cast of “Jersey Shore” appears to present on September 12. But it’s not all “GTL” at the MTV Video Music Awards: The just got a bit more “Glee”-ful, as castmembers of the hit Fox show, including Jane Lynch, Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer and Amber Riley will also be on hand to present on Sunday. And those aren’t the only big names just added to the presenters list. TV talk-show maven and former “American Idol” host Ellen DeGeneres (who will tape an episode of her show at the VMAs), “Burlesque” star Cher, VMA-nominated Katy Perry, “Star Trek” star Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson, the cast of “Jackass” including Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O are all presenting, along with reality-show starlet Kim Kardashian and Romeo of the Latin music sensation Aventura. Before the VMAs kick off at 9 p.m. ET, “Hills” star and newly named “Dancing With the Stars” contestant Audrina Patridge will be the official MTV International “2010 MTV Video Music Awards” red-carpet guest correspondent. Nicki Minaj will take the stage during the pre-show portion of the ceremony, while model Coco Rocha will host MTV.com’s “Red Carpet Report.” As if all of that wasn’t news enough, an already star-studded performance lineup has just gotten more so: Mary J Blige and Swizz Beatz will hit the stage with Drake, while Bruno Mars will join “Nothin’ on You” MC B.o.B . This latest round of celebrities joins previously announced performers including Eminem, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Drake, Linkin Park and Usher. Those VMA acts should more than meet the show’s musical expectations, especially since host Chelsea Handler has said she won’t be doing any singing or dancing on the Nokia Theatre stage. “I’m not a dancer and I’m not a singer, and I don’t have the kind of ass that should be mooned. I mean it’s sweet, it’s a sweet ass, but it’s little and it’s white,” she joked. “I’m there to be funny, kind of, so hopefully I’ll just kind of doing that.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Bruno Mars Shows His ‘Darker’ Self On ‘The Other Side’ Video

Collaboration with Cee-Lo and B.o.B is Mars’ first single off debut EP. By Jayson Rodriguez Bruno Mars Photo: MTV News On Wednesday, Bruno Mars premiered his latest video , “The Other Side,” showing the Hawaiian-born rehearsing, participating in a photo shoot and aimlessly wandering around Los Angeles. According to Mars, the moody visuals match the spirit of the song. “The truth of the matter is, I’m complicated/ You’re as straight as they come,” he sings on the fast-paced number. “You go about your day, baby/ While I hide from the sun/ It’s better if you don’t understand/ ‘Cause you won’t know what it’s like till you try.” ” ‘The Other Side,’ which is the darker side of Bruno Mars, it’s me, Cee-Lo and B.o.B, we all got on the track and it’s one of my favorite records on the CD,” he told MTV News. “Just because it’s so unique, and I think the story behind the song, when you listen to the lyrics, it says, ‘It’s better if you don’t understand.’ And to me, it was so powerful that we actually named the EP that.” It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, Mars’ debut, features just four songs. After his success behind the scenes as a producer, Mars broke out this year as a featured artist on B.o.B’s #1 hit “Nothin’ on You” and on Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire.” Now, Mars is concentrating on his solo work. In May, he told MTV News that being in the spotlight wasn’t necessarily a part of his plans, but when he was given the chance, he was more than prepared. “The journey wasn’t short at all — it was trial and error and trial and error,” Mars said. “It was just back and forth, man. But once ‘Nothin’ on You’ blew up, I had these songs in my back pocket, and the label thought it’d be a good time to give people a little taste of what they’re gonna get with the album. The EP came together real nice; you’re gonna get a nice effect of what’s in store.” Are you excited to hear more of Bruno Mars’ music? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Bruno Mars

B.o.B’s ‘Nothin’ On You’ Came Together ‘Magically,’ Smeezingtons Say

‘We’re melody guys, we sing,’ Phillip Lawrence says of production trio, which includes Bruno Mars. By Jayson Rodriguez Photo: MTV News The making of B.o.B’s breakout hit “Nothin’ on You” was a group effort, according to the song’s producers. Bruno Mars , who is featured on the track, said he and his production partners, Phillip Lawrence and Ari Levine — together they comprise the Smeezingtons — collectively pieced together the music that would eventually top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Me and Phil always had that hook,” Mars told MTV News, spontaneously breaking out into the chorus that is helping to make him one of music’s buzzed-about names. “It was a different melody at first, though,” Lawrence added. “So one day our other partner — the Silent Bob of the Smeezingtons — Ari, he walked into the studio and said he programmed the drums [over],” Mars explained. “It had this old-school hip-hop beat. I said, ‘Gimme the piano,’ and that was the first thing I started playing. Magically, that melody worked with this track we were doing.” The result, of course, was “Nothin’ on You,” which landed atop the charts this year and has become an early contender for song of the summer. Now, the production trio’s services are increasingly in demand. Among the artists they’re hoping to get in the studio with is Keri Hilson, who’ll be prepping her next album. Apart from B.o.B, the Smeezingtons also recently worked with Gnarls Barkley’s Cee-Lo on Mars’ debut EP, It’s Better If You Don’t Understand, and are hoping to get back in the lab with him. (“He’s incredible,” Mars said of Cee-Lo.) And their remix of K’Naan’s “Wavin’ Flag” has been selected as the Coca-Cola anthem for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The Smeezingtons intend to apply the same principles that have brought them success so far to future projects, including Bruno Mars’ forthcoming full-length debut. “We’re melody guys, we sing,” Lawrence explained of their sound. “That’s kind of our main focus, to have really good, memorable melodies. We’ll go into the studio, and [Mars will] start playing the piano and I’ll start freestyling or vice versa. We’re heavily influenced by the ’80s [sound].” Are you looking forward to new material from the Smeezingtons? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists B.o.B

Wiz Khalifa’s Kush And Orange Juice Hits Big On The Internet

MC’s latest mixtape remains a trending topic on Twitter. By Steven Roberts Wiz Khalifa Photo: MTV News Wiz Khalifa is winning right now. Khalifa released his newest mixtape Kush and Orange Juice via his Twitter page on Wednesday (April 14) and the Internet paid attention. Twitter’s list of trending topics included #KushandOrangeJuice and the amount of fans searching for the mixtape also put it on the list of Google trends. Hype for the mixtape actually started to build Tuesday night on Twitter, when Khalfia tweeted to his fans, “Yo Taylors, #Kushandorangejuice drops tomorrow for ur waken & baken pleasures.” He teased about the mixtape for most of the night and once it was released Wednesday morning, a frenzy followed. The mixtape’s cover pays homage to David Ruffin’s 1980 Gentleman Ruffin album, and the tape features various samples as well as Khalifa rapping over Loose Ends’ “Hangin’ on a String” on “The Kid Frankie.” This seems to be another step in the right direction for Wiz Khalifa, whose popularity has skyrocketed since he left his label Warner Bros. in July 2009. He has since released three well-received mixtapes, Burn After Rolling, How High (a collaborative effort with Curren$y) and Kush and Orange Juice, as well as an indepedent album, Deal or No Deal. He’s also seen his fanbase grow on Twitter and was featured as one of XXL ‘s 2010 Freshmen 10 . When MTV News caught up Khalifa at the Freshmen 10 photo shoot , Khalifa attributed his success to hard work — and his fans. “Just staying in the studio, always working, always putting out mixtapes, material for people to listen to, capitalizing off of whatever I do. If something does well, you got to keep going after that. You can’t get comfortable after that and think that’s it. So just constantly working and reinventing myself, making smart moves — and having great fans.” Have you heard Wiz Khalifa’s latest mixtape? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

B.o.B Is Surprised By ‘Dramatic Impact’ Of ‘Nothin’ On You’

‘Me and my managers, we still look at each other speechless,’ rapper says of #2 single. By Steven Roberts B.o.B Photo: MTV News B.o.B.’s “Nothin’ on You” has become something of a surprise smash hit. Released in early February, the song steadily climbed the Billboard and iTunes charts and is currently perched at #2 on both, with what seems like a real shot at #1. MTV News recently caught up with B.o.B., who was as surprised as anyone by the single’s crossover success. The Atlanta rapper admitted he and his managers are still dumbfounded. “We really didn’t expect it to have the dramatic impact it had, nor how fast it happened,” B.o.B said. “Me and my managers, B. Rich and TJ, we still look at each other speechless. We always aim to be successful. But when the byproduct exceeds your expectations — when usually you barely make the basket with what you want — the gratitude is through the roof. It’s literally a dream come true.” The song features Hawaiian crooner Bruno Mars, who did double duty singing the infectious hook and producing the track as one half of production duo the Smeezingtons (Flo Rida’s “Right Round”). B.o.B said he and Mars had worked together before, but “Nothin’ on You” has become the goose that laid the golden egg. “I’ve worked with Bruno Mars a lot, and I would say this is the golden egg that we hatched,” B.o.B. said. “Bruno’s got a lot more up his sleeve, so I’m glad that he’s really doing his thing and making the best of this time.” B.o.B speculated that “Nothin’ on You” is doing so well because its sincerity makes it relatable to women everywhere. He said that sometimes girls who feel insecure need a boost of confidence from their significant other. “I feel like [the song] kind of spoke to ‘that crowd,’ ” he smiled, “which is a huge crowd apparently.” Related Artists B.o.B
