Europe’s growing horse meat problem escalated Friday as Britain’s food regulator said that new testing had found the Bell’s beef supply tainted with it. Taco Bell parent company Yum Brands said the horsemeat issue is limited to the UK market , and that it will step up testing of its beef going forward. Europe’s horsemeat scandal erupted in January, when testing in Ireland revealed that some ground beef products sold there contained equine DNA. Burger King horsemeat samples were also found in February. The tainted beef epidemic continues to ensnare numerous well-known brands, prompting product withdrawals, consumer concerns and government investigations. Britain’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) said on Friday it had conducted 1,797 tests over the last seven days, 99 percent of which were negative. However, four tests were positive, it said. Four too many. They were for Taco Bell ground beef, beef skewers made by catering company Brakes, and Birds Eye ready meals – spaghetti bolognese and beef lasagne. The Birds Eye meals were withdrawn from sale last week after tests on a product the company sold in Belgium via the same supplier came back positive. Taco Bell tested meat at its UK restaurants as soon as news of the horsemeat contamination surfaced, spokesman Christopher Fuller said in a statement. Taco Bell, like many other companies, cannot say for certain whether any of the horsemeat-tainted product was served to consumers, he saod. The chain will test every batch of beef when it arrives at its processor and again before it is delivered to restaurants to make sure it is 100 percent beef. “We apologize to our customers and take this very seriously,” he added. For Yum, food contamination hasn’t been limited to ground beef, either. Its nearly 5,300 KFC restaurants in China have seen business plummet after news reports and government investigations found chemical residue in its chicken supply. The horse meat scandal has not extended to the U.S., at least not yet, but given the complexities of the food supply chain, you have to wonder. Guess they shouldn’t have told him he could have it his way…. via News One A 302-pound South Carolina man has been cuffed and charged with with disorderly conduct for allegedly striking a Burger King worker over the head with a food tray during a dispute over cold onion rings, The Smoking Gun reports. Kristopher Wiggins, 32, was taken into custody last week in connection to the incident that took place on Jan. 29 in the small town of Santee. A March 20 trial date has been set for Wiggins on a misdemeanor charge. Local police say that Wiggins became “loud and boisterous and did throw a food tray and food items” at Burger King worker Framon Frasier. His glasses were broken during the attack. Wiggins flipped out because his girlfriend allegedly balked at accepting onion rings that were in a warmer “because they would be cold.” Frasier, 34, told the cops that he assured the woman that he would not serve her cold onion rings. Wiggins told the worker that his girlfriend should get a refund, which prompted Frasier to repeat his statement that he would not serve the woman cold onion rings. Wiggins, feeling that his girlfriend was disrespected, allegedly struck Frasier over the head with a food tray. SMH. It should never get to this point, folks. Catching a charge and a court date because you couldn’t control your onion ring rage is not a good look. Let’s do better . MUCH better.
In a surprising and unsettling statement, Burger King admits to horse meat possibly tainting burgers sold in both the U.K. and Ireland recently. It’s just the latest chapter in an ongoing scandal in the two nations involving beef burger patties allegedly containing meat from horses and pigs. It’s suspected that a meat distributor in Poland, which works with Burger King and other supermarket chains, used meats other than beef as filler in cheap burgers. Burger King had originally stressed, in the face of the scandal, that its patties are made with 100 percent beef, a claim that was apparently disproved. However, BK later dropped Silvercrest, the food processing plant that received meat from the Polish distributor, all but confirming the horse meat scandal. The Guardian has a statement from Burger King stating: “Our independent DNA test results on product taken from restaurants were negative for any equine DNA. “However, four samples recently taken from the Silvercrest plant have shown the presence of very small trace levels of equine DNA.” “Within the last 36 hours, we have established that Silvercrest used a small percentage of beef imported from a non-approved supplier in Poland.” “They promised to deliver 100% British and Irish beef patties and have not done so. This is a clear violation of our specifications, and we have terminated our relationship with them.” In other words, there is no evidence proving that Burger King ever served horsemeat, but the company admits that some of its locations may have inadvertently done so. Additionally, UK officials have stressed that the horsemeat-tainted burgers do not pose a health risk to consumers, but still, not exactly positive PR. When you go to BK, you’re probably not craving a horse burger. Kinda makes you wanna stay home and just make a king ranch chicken recipe instead.
