BP’s New Spokesperson Is Former Dick Cheney Aid

photo via flickr If it’s bad and it’s related to oil, you know Dick Cheney must be involved in some way. This was true from 2000-2008 and it’s just as true today. Cheney’s press secretary during his 2004, Anne Womack-Kolton, has been hired by BP to lead its US media team. Womack-Kolton ran the public affairs team in the Bush Department of Energy and defended Cheney’s secret meetings with oil company executives in 2001. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

BP’s Atlantis: Another Catastrophic Accident Waiting to Happen? Facts on Atlantis, BP and the Administration

May 17th, 2010 BP’s Atlantis: Another Catastrophic Accident Waiting to Happen? The Gulf of Mexico is currently reeling from the human and environmental tragedy unfolding after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon, an offshore oil platform. The Horizon, operated by BP, exploded on April 20, 2010, killing 11 workers, injuring many others and spilling millions of gallons of oil into the ocean. While the cause of the Horizon explosion is being investigated, it is important to note that BP has a devastating history of accidents and evading government oversight. Worse yet, an even bigger tragedy in the Gulf could be looming. An internal BP email admits that a “catastrophic” accident is possible at another one of its platforms, the BP Atlantis. An accident at this platform could result in a spill that is many times larger than the one currently unfolding from the Deepwater Horizon. BP Atlantis poses a serious, immediate and potentially irreparable threat to the Gulf of Mexico’s marine environment, oil workers and communities. BP’s Atlantis platform became active during the Bush administration in October of 2007. Located in “Hurricane Alley,” more than 150 miles from New Orleans at a water depth of more than 7,000 feet, it is one of the deepest moored semisubmersible oil and gas platforms in the world. In August of 2008, a BP contractor made a startling discovery about Atlantis: The company was operating the massive Atlantis platform without proper up-to-date and engineer-approved documentation. Some of the problems included: * More than 6,000 critical documents — including those for pipelines, flowlines, wellheads and other important systems — did not have the required engineering documentation. * Over 85 percent of the project’s subsea piping and instrument diagrams, critical documents for operating the platform, were not approved by engineers. * Many of its safety shutdown system logic diagrams were not up to date. * Over 95 percent of its subsea welding documents had no final engineering approval, calling into question the safety of the welds. Workers clean oil from the Horizon spill from a beach in South Pass, Louisiana. Photo by the U.S. Coast Guard. Atlantis is no small threat. An internal BP email characterized the situation as having the potential for “catastrophic operator errors.” Worse yet, Atlantis is operating in deeper water than the Deepwater Horizon. A worst-case scenario oil spill from Atlantis would exceed the Exxon Valdez spill in only two days, and be many times larger than the spill from the Horizon explosion. BP’s Big Oil Profits The BP group is the largest oil and gas producer and one of the largest gasoline retailers in the United States, and in 2008 was the fourth-biggest company in the world. In 2009, BP was the largest producer in the Gulf of Mexico and had pre-tax profits of $25.1 billion. BP Evades Compliance and the Federal Government Fails to Take Action Despite questions from Food & Water Watch and Members of Congress, BP has chosen to deny the problems at Atlantis. The company went so far as to send a letter to Congress saying that it only learned of the allegations recently and claimed they were unsubstantiated. However, BP’s own documents show that BP has known about these problems for years. Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS), the primary federal agency responsible for ensuring that all aspects of oil, gas, leasing, exploration, development and production activities are conducted safely, hasn’t been doing its job. The agency did almost nothing when the whistleblower and Food & Water Watch first reported the problems at BP Atlantis and alerted members of Congress. An aerial view of the progress of the Horizon oil spill off the coast of Louisiana as of May 9, 2010. Photo by NASA. It was only after 19 members of Congress requested an investigation that MMS said it would conduct an investigation starting in March 2010. By May 2010, however, according to an agency response to a Food & Water Watch Freedom of Information Act request, the agency admitted that it had not and would not take any steps to investigate. Take Action to Shut Down BP Atlantis Tell President Obama to shut down Atlantis. Given the seriousness of the situation, production at the Atlantis platform must be immediately suspended until it can be proven safe. In addition, President Obama needs to order a review of all deepwater platforms in operation and overhaul offshore drilling regulations to reflect public interests, not private profits. Take action today by going to spillthetruth.org. Visit www.foodandwaterwatch.org/press/atlantis for more information. Read more Monday, May 17th, 2010 Food & Water Watch Sues Feds for Ignoring Problems at Operating BP Platform Launches “Spill the Truth” Campaign, Puts MMS Under Scrutiny to Close BP Atlantis Platform Amid Safety Concerns “Catastrophic Operator Errors” Could Be Next Gulf Disaster New Orleans, La.—National consumer advocacy group Food & Water Watch filed suit today in a Houston federal court seeking a temporary injunction to halt operations of BP’s massive Atlantis oil drilling platform until critical safety documents are produced. The agency, along with a former BP document controls subcontractor, maintains the Department of the Interior has allowed BP Atlantis to operate without documented, approved final engineering drawings considered critical to safe operation. Erin Andrews Gushes About Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Vaguely Denies Any Penetrating

Erin Andrews’ decision to appear on Dancing With the Stars went far beyond the chance to learn the waltz. The reporter wanted to send a message. “I wanted to be on a show where millions of people watch and say, ‘If you’re stalked or a victim of video voyeurism you shouldn’t be embarrassed.'” “You should just live your life.’” Last year’s stunning Erin Andrews nude video scandal, which landed a peephole perv behind bars, was followed by death threats earlier this year. She said she was “tentative” about appearing on the show, but “I’ve got a Russian on my side that isn’t going to let anyone come near me.” Speaking of Maksim Chmerkovskiy … Erin and Maks remain coy on whether they’re an item . As for whether her relationship with her Dancing with the Stars heats up away from the ballroom floor, Erin joked, “Depends on what day you get us on.” People magazine and Ellen DeGeneres be damned. As the pair continued on the PR circuit, E!’s Chelsea Handler was not about to beat around the bush. “Why are you trying to act like you guys aren’t penetrating?” she asked. That got Maks to blush, and Erin to issue an even flimsier denial: “We just don’t know what to say,” she gushed, “because everyday we read something new.” So do we . Handler is convinced, though: “You’re glowing, you’re beaming. You’re in love!” she marveled at how the cocky Maks looked asked if Erin made him nicer. As for the penetrating? Expect more non-denials and on-stage hotness!

Ahmadinejad Calls 9/11 "Big Fabrication"

“(Reuters) – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday called the September 11 attacks on the United States a “big fabrication” that was used to justify the U.S. war on terrorism, the official IRNA news agency reported. Ahmadinejad, who often rails against the West and Israel, made the comment in a meeting with Intelligence Ministry personnel. Ahmadinejad described the destruction of the twin towers in New York on September 11, 2001 as a “complicated intelligence scenario and act,” IRNA reported. He added: “The September 11 incident was a big fabrication as a pretext for the campaign against terrorism and a prelude for staging an invasion against Afghanistan.” He did not elaborate. In January, Ahmadinejad termed the September 11 attacks “suspicious” and accused the West of seeking to dominate the Middle East.” more at link… Ahmadinejad=crazy like a fox? Its funny how, Iran, a country that hasn't invaded another country in over 200 years is evil, yet the US military has the country surrounded in Iraq and Afghanistan (all started after 9/11 conveniently). The US is currently dropping drone bombs on villages at 3 times the rate of the Bush administration. Iran's major conflicts occurred internally when the CIA funded coups attempted to overthrow their gov't and when the US armed Saddam Hussein, our former ally in the 80s, to go to war with Iran in the 80s. Even today, the CIA uses Jundallah, a front terror group to carry out attacks on the Iranian National Guard. Translation note: Ahmadinejad never called for Israel “to be wiped off the map,” actually, the line goes more like, “the Occupation regime must end.” Similar translation errors have been exploited, such as the “Death to America” chant that Dick Cheney used so well build up support for war. The real translation is “Down with America,” a little different and less inflammatory. Don't believe the hype, they're going to provocateur an event to instigate war with Iran. It has to be something that makes it look like the US is in the right, justifying the war, when most likely, it'll be a staged-false flag terror attack, just like 9/11, Gulf of Tonkin, the Maine, the Lusitania, Pearl Harbor, the Reichstag…I can go back to Roman times if you want b/c it ain't new. added by: rodstradamus

Biden says Cheney is misinformed or misleading

Vice President Joe Biden on Sunday belittled Dick Cheney's criticism of the Obama administration's commitment to fighting terrorism as either “misinformed or he is misinforming” and said the Iraq war wasn't worth it because of “the horrible price” paid. The former vice president fired back gently at his successor, saying, “I guess I shouldn't be surprised by my friend Joe Biden.” Cheney also said that he disagreed with decisions by Bush officials to place shoe bomber Richard Reid on trial in civilian court and to release terrorism suspects from the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The public back-and-forth between current and former administrations played out across the Sunday talks like a pingpong match: Biden's NBC appearance taped Saturday night from the Olympics in Canada, allowing Cheney to respond on ABC's “This Week,” before Biden answered later on CBS' “Face the Nation.” In getting in the last word, Biden said: “Thank God the last administration didn't listen to him in the end” on how to handle terrorism suspects. The vice president insisted again that the ongoing debate on the best way to bring terrorist suspects to justice ignored that the Obama administration was acting on the precedents set by the Bush administration. Cheney was vice president under Bush for eight years. “His fight seems to be with the last administration. We did exactly the same thing,” Biden said, and he accused Cheney of not listening to what's going on around him and of trying to rewrite history. Cheney has been a leading Republican critic of the Obama administration's handling of national security, contending that President Barack Obama is “trying to pretend” that the U.S. is not at war with terrorists. The result, Cheney says, is that Americans are less safe. Biden said that under Obama's direction, the U.S. has been more successful at killing al-Qaida leaders and their followers than it was during the years George W. Bush and Cheney were in the White House. “We've eliminated 12 of their top 20 people. We have taken out 100 of their associates,” said Biden. “They are in fact not able to do anything remotely like they were in the past. They are on the run. I don't know where Dick Cheney has been. Look, it's one thing, again, to criticize. It's another thing to sort of rewrite history. What is he talking about?” Cheney, Biden said, “either is misinformed or he is misinforming. But the facts are that his assertions are not accurate.” Biden also said the Iraq war hasn't been worth its “horrible price” and that the Bush mishandled it from the outset by taking its “eye off the ball.” That, he said, left the U.S. in a more dangerous position in Afghanistan, the al-Qaida stronghold where Osama bin Laden and his cohorts plotted the Sept 11 terror attacks. The war has also cost the United States support from other nations around the world, he said. Cheney took issue with Biden's assertion that the Obama White House had been successful in winding down the Iraq war. “For them to try to take credit for what happened in Iraq is a little strange,” Cheney said. “It ought to go with a healthy dose of 'thank you, George Bush.'” Still, Biden said Iraq will have successful parliamentary elections next month and the U.S. is likely to bring home some 90,000 combat troops by summer's end. More than 4,370 U.S. military personnel have died in Iraq since Bush ordered the U.S.-led invasion in 2003 to overthrow Saddam Hussein. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have been wounded or killed. Turning to the main issue on the minds of most voters, Biden said Obama inherited a shrinking economy with financial institutions that were on the edge of collapse, threatening to move the world into a depression. Biden said the economy expanded at 5.8 percent during the last quarter and the U.S. has “stopped the hemorrhaging of jobs.” He said there was “tangible evidence” economy was moving in the right direction. By the time of November's elections, he said, “in addition to bringing home 90,000 American troops, troops out of Iraq, the story of this administration is going to be more clearly told, and we're going to just fine.” http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_BIDEN_CHENEY?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&… added by: xiola
