Michelle Lee was minding her business sipping a water with her friend when a bouncer approached her, asked if she was pregnant, and promptly escorted her to the door. Michelle Lee was catching up with friends at a nightspot near her parents’ home when a bouncer pulled her aside. “Can I ask you a personal question?” Lee recalled him asking. “Are you pregnant?” She responded yes because, at eight months along, it would have been difficult to argue otherwise, she said later. Lee, 29, said the bouncer who was staffing the Coach House bar near Roselle didn’t care that she was only drinking water. …”He just said, if anything happens, if a fight breaks out and you get hurt, we are responsible,” Lee said. “That can happen anywhere. If I am going somewhere, I am taking responsibility.” Civil rights experts said that, despite any good intentions, it would be wrong to send a woman packing just because she was pregnant. “There are certain things for which you are not able to discriminate against someone, and one is their gender,” said Ed Yohnka, an American Civil Liberties Union spokesman. “And only women can have babies. You can’t discriminate against a pregnant person.” According to the Illinois Human Rights Act: “It is unlawful to discriminate in the full and equal enjoyment of facilities and services by any place of public accommodation.” Now, we get that the bouncer had the best possible intentions when asking Miss Lee to leave, and clearly some lawyers believe that this is a clear case of discrimination. Cake Try For ‘Classy And Grandiose’ In Showroom Of Compassion

After a six-plus-year wait between albums, indie rockers didn’t feel obligated to ‘reinvent’ their sound. By Sabrina Rojas Weiss Cake’s John McCrea Photo: MTV News “It’s been a long time,” John McCrea sings on the second track of Cake ‘s new album, Showroom of Compassion, which dropped on Tuesday (January 11). For fans who have been waiting more than six years for a new release from the understated indie rockers, it sure has been. And what they’ll get after this long time is signature Cake , albeit with a few adjustments. “We’re not trying to change; we never have,” McCrea told MTV News. “I always thought that was so wasteful for musicians to feel so obligated to reinvent themselves every album. … That said, we do have reverb for the first time on my vocals. I think I had a moratorium against reverb all this time because I didn’t want to sound grandiose.” There’s also more piano, which McCrea said they avoided in the past “because we didn’t want to sound classy. Now we’re a little classier,” he deadpanned. “I think we’re doing what America wants us to do: being classy and grandiose. And rude, with the song ‘Sick of You.’ ” But none of this is news to the real die-hards, who have videotaped live performances of the new songs, studied the lyrics and are already singing along to every word at concerts. “It’s pretty great, especially if you go someplace like France, where the language is French and the album has only been out for a couple months, and everybody is singing the words in English,” said Vince DeFiore, who plays trumpet, keyboard and percussion. After spending years extricating themselves from a label deal, launching their own label and dealing with other issues that “musicians shouldn’t have to deal with in a normal situation,” Cake set about recording the album in an entirely solar-powered studio in Sacramento, California. The conversion turned out to be so efficient, they actually get a kickback from the city now. “As the value of recorded music descends to zero, we get a little check for $25,” McCrea said of their power-grid surplus. But a band whose songs are perennial favorites for use in ads (Apple, Snapple), TV shows (everything from “The Sopranos” to “Chuck”) and movies, shouldn’t have to worry about funds too much. Are there any Showroom songs they think are ripe for commercial use? ” ‘Easy to Crash’ — maybe that would be good for a car that has a really good safety record,” McCrea offered. “I might allow that. Album collaborations are rare in hip-hop history. By Steven Roberts Kanye West and Jay-Z Photo: Getty Images Now that their first single, “H.A.M.,” has debuted, it looks like Jay-Z and Kanye West’s highly anticipated Watch the Throne album is actually happening. West tweeted about the collaboration in August , and confirmed it a few months later, saying the project would now be a full album . But few would have guessed it would be released so soon — right on the heels of West’s critically lauded My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy — and there aren’t too many examples in music history of two superstars collaborating on an album. There have been plenty of rock “supergroups” who have released albums over the years, starting with the likes of Cream (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce) and Crosby, Stills and Nash (David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash) in the 1960s and continuing to Velvet Revolver (Slash, Scott Weiland, Dave Kushner, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum), Them Crooked Vultures (Dave Grohl, Josh Homme and John Paul Jones) and Audioslave (Chris Cornell, Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk). However, there isn’t as rich a history of duos and groups coming together in hip-hop. The Wu-Tang Clan and N.W.A are as influential as any groups in hip-hop, but their members’ reputations didn’t flourish until they embarked on their own. And they were originally groups to begin with. The Firm saw Nas join forces with AZ, Foxy Brown and Nature under the production of Dr. Dre and the Trackmasters, but besides Nas, the group’s members are far from household names. More recently, Nas teamed up with Damian Marley to release Distant Relatives , but neither of these artists can touch the current popularity of West or Jay-Z. Barbara Streisand enlisted Barry Gibb to write an album for her during the height of the Bee Gees’ success in the late ’70s. In 1980, the pair produced Streisand’s Guilty , which went on to sell 20 million records and win a Grammy. While anyone would be hard-pressed to match that success, Jay-Z is no stranger to collaborative albums. He teamed up with R. Kelly to record Best of Both Worlds in 2002. At the time, Jay-Z was arguably the most-popular rapper and R. Kelly was certainly the biggest R&B artist. The two had previously collaborated successfully on Kelly’s “Fiesta” remix and Jay-Z’s “Guilty Until Proven Innocent,” so an album seemed like the ideal next step. By time the album would be released, however, R. Kelly was embroiled in very public trial. The pair would try again with Unfinished Business in 2004, but tensions eventually boiled over. Amid their respective controversies, both albums were certified platinum. Jay also collaborated with Linkin Park in 2004 to release Collision Course , which saw the group and Hov reworking and mashing up their previous recordings. Jay also unofficially collaborated with Danger Mouse on The Grey Album , a mash-up of Jay’s The Black Album and the Beatles’ self-titled White Album . The Grey Album would go on to launch the career of Danger Mouse, who has since released albums with Cee-Lo Green under the name Gnarls Barkley and The Shins’ James Mercer as the band Broken Bells. West produced the majority of Common’s Be and Finding Forever albums, and he was rumored to be working with Pharrell and Lupe Fiasco on a CRS (Child Rebel Soldier) album. Lady Gaga’s Choreographer Films Reality Show

By Jocelyn Vena Laurieann Gibson Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images 2011 is bound to be a big year for Lady Gaga , and now it seems that her choreographer, Laurieann Gibson, is also poised for a big year. Gibson will star in her own E! reality show, tentatively titled “The Dance Scene,” set to premiere in April, EW reports . The show will follow Gibson as she trains assistant choreographers and dancers to work with celebrities. Ryan Seacrest, who will serve as the show’s producer, explains, “Dance is at the center of pop culture — today more than ever — and Laurieann is an amazing force accelerating this huge wave of creativity. This series gives audiences an insider’s view of how competitive the dance world is, the talent and ambition that a dancer needs to be successful in the Hollywood scene, and the drama that ensues along the way.” The eight episode docu-series will officially debut April 10. “The competitive world of the professional dancer is grueling creative work,” said Lisa Berger, executive vice president of programming at E!. “Watching Laurieann mentor these young artists, who will do anything to make it in the business, gives us a glimpse into a world where the pursuit of success and excellence outweighs all else.” Gibson most recently worked with Gaga, but has also worked with Diddy and Alicia Keys. She’s also tasted reality show life, having appeared on “Making the Band” and “Skating With the Stars.” This week, Gibson tweeted about filming her show, writing , “In London.. Shooting new show on E”!!! Its gonna be Epic.!!” She later tweeted a photo of her cameramen, adding, “Lookin’ good guys! 2011 Romantic Resolutions Revealed!

Good day, Bossip fam! Here’s to another “Almost There Thursday!” The New Year is approaching and, as we all have done in the past, it’s the time of year when people make promises to themselves to change certain parts of their lives and/or habits. Also known as, New Year’s Resolutions! Whether it’s vowing to hit the gym and shed those 15 pounds you’ve been wanting to get off for years or cutting all your credit cards in half, we’ve all made those promises to ourselves. Regardless of how long we stick to the plan, the intention is still there, right? But how many of us have made a romantic resolution? Everybody does at some point! The single folks make an effort to date more, the philanderers go on strike and try celibacy and the married couples might make a vow to be intimate more than once or twice a month. Well, 2011 is no exception! So, we took to the streets and found folks who were willing to share their romantic resolutions! Take a look! In 2011, I’m going to try and date more. I never go out and I’m always forfeiting parties and events. I don’t like dressing up and standing in heels all night long when I can watch “Weeds” and the “Big C” on demand. It’s crazy too because I love meeting new people and socializing but if I’m not in the mood after work and working out, which is often, I’m not going anywhere. Next year, I will have a better attitude about going out but it seems like more of the same and seeing the same people over and over again. I’m just not into it, but he won’t come knocking on my door now will he? – Megan, 31 I’m going to give my fiance a break. I’m always all over her but I love her so much and every time I see I just want to grab her and have my way with her. We have a little girl and she lights up my life in way that’s indescribable and my future wife is the only person I can thank for that. I can do better with handling things that need to be done around that house and feedings and things of that nature so I’m going to make a point to be better about taking initiative, she shouldn’t have to ask. We found three careers that are said to make a comeback in 2011: Business, Health Care and Legal and if you’re looking for a change in routine and scenery, this just might be the info that you need. Comeback Career #1 – Business Bob Kelleher, an HR expert for Monster.com, expects businesses to staff up again in 2011. “I am very optimistic that companies will start hiring so they can increase revenue and supplies,” says Kelleher. Comeback Keys: Looking at the bigger picture, Colorado State University’s Martin Shields is optimistic because the gross domestic product – the value of all goods and services produced nationwide – has improved for four straight quarters. If you’ve been applying for jobs in the business world without much success in 2010, don’t despair. “Stay positive and talk enthusiastically about the skills you do have,” says Renick, adding that a temporary or contract position is a great way to get your foot in the door. Training: With companies looking to hire again, make sure your resume is up to date. Taking classes and earning a business certificate or degree is a great way to stay current. Getting an MBA will help for senior-level positions. Freelance consulting gigs are another great way to fill gaps on your resume. Comeback Keys: The American Society for Clinical Pathology says there is a “serious shortage” of laboratory personnel in the United States, making qualified job applicants well-positioned for success in 2011. What’s more, jobs like medical assistant, nurse, and phlebotomist are impossible to outsource. Upward mobility is another plus for the health care profession. “A good number of my phlebotomists have worked full time for us and have taken advantage of tuition reimbursement,” Newton Memorial Hospital’s Ruth Pollison told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “They’ve gone on to become nurses, lab technologists or radiologic technologists.” Training: Quick training programs, whether it’s a certificate or associate’s degree, can qualify you for many medical positions. If you start now, you might be ready to start work in 2011! [Search for Nursing and Medical training programs now] Average Salary: Medical Assistants: $28,300 Dental Assistants: $32,380 Laboratory Technicians: $53,500 Registered Nurses: $62,450 Medical Managers: $80,240 Comeback Career #3 – Legal According to staffing firm Robert Half International, the legal industry is expected to see the strongest hiring activity in the fourth quarter of 2010, setting up a rosy outlook for occupations like court reporters and paralegals well into 2011. Comeback Keys: Paralegals, long an indispensable part of a legal team, will see “much faster than average” job growth through 2018, according to the Department of Labor. Since paralegals perform many of the same tasks as lawyers, yet don’t earn as lofty salaries, job security is another real strength. Training: Becoming a paralegal or court reporter can be a quick career transition for many professionals, particularly if you already have a bachelor’s. Certificate programs can last just six months. Fantasia Concert, Few Other Events Canceled Due To East Coast Blizzard

By Terri Schwartz A look at Manhattan’s East Village on Monday Photo: Mario Tama/ Getty Images Flights might be canceled, the subway may be delayed and the East Coast might be buried under a foot of snow, but the spirit of Broadway lives on. Elisa Shevitz, director of communications for the Broadway League, told MTV News that Broadway shows will go on as scheduled. Because of the snow, some attendees who had already purchased tickets may be unable to attend those shows, which means some last-minute hard-to-get seats might be available for more popular shows. Those in the city looking for something to do could potentially snag a seat up front for their favorite Broadway show, although Mondays are normally dark for many Broadway productions anway. But considering subways are delayed and New York City streets are hard for cars and pedestrians to navigate, that probably means a longer commute than usual. The League won’t know how ticket sales were affected by the blizzard until they calculate their weekly grosses at the end of the week. “Broadway shows seldom shut down,” Shevitz said. “The show goes on. That’s the nature of our business.” There haven’t been any reported major concerts cancellations either, but that might be because there weren’t any major concerts scheduled over the Christmas weekend. Prince is performing December 29 at Madison Square Garden, Passion Pit is playing at the Wellmont Theatre in New Jersey on December 30 and 31, and Phish aren’t performing at the Garden until December 30 and January 1. Fantasia’s performance at the Beacon Theatre was postponed Monday (December 27) due to the weather, with the rescheduled show to be announced at a later date. Stephen Dorff Talks ‘Somewhere,’ Career Ups And Downs

‘I thought I was a sell-out, playing a vampire,’ the actor says about his memorable role in ‘Blade.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephen Dorff Photo: MTV News Although his role in “Somewhere” was one of the most challenging of his career, Stephen Dorff is grateful to writer/director Sofia Coppola for giving him the opportunity to play a character who is a complete departure from the menacing, murderous types audiences are used to seeing him portray. When MTV News caught up with the actor, he explained that “Somewhere” is the kind of independent art film he was most interested in at the start of his career — which has spanned more than two decades — but when Hollywood started calling, he reluctantly veered into bigger films playing bad boys and villains. “[After the 1992 coming-of-age drama ‘Power of One,’] Hollywood was coming to me, but I was kind of resisting,” Dorff said of his early years in the business. “I really wanted to make art films. I loved working on movies like ‘I Shot Andy Warhol’ [and] ‘S.F.W.’ I liked doing edgier things. I was kind of into Nirvana, I was into rebelling against my childhood.” He added, “I wasn’t really interested in playing vulnerable, sweet parts, like I played in ‘Power of One’ and ‘Backbeat,’ so in a way I think I did that to my own image. I kind of fought it. Then, when it came time to wanting to do [a sensitive role again], it wasn’t necessarily there for me. “Then ‘Blade’ came around and I thought that was the end of my career,” Dorff admitted. “Because I thought I was a sell-out, playing a vampire.” Dorff said that those reservations eventually subsided and that he enjoyed making the action-horror flick. “I had a good time with [director] Steve Norrington,” Dorff said. “I knew he was talented. I had seen this little teeny movie he did and I knew this guy was going to make a good movie.” Dorff went on to say that now he feels that “Blade,” as well as the first “Matrix” movie, were well ahead of their time with regard to what they opened up for filmmaking. “Now we have so many comic-book movies and they’re kind of regenerating the same movie,” he explained. “In a way, there’s not much originality to them. I like that we did ours earlier.” Dorff said that leading up to and after “Blade,” he tried going for less dark roles, but that he couldn’t resist opportunities to work with the likes of Jack Nicholson (1997’s “Blood and Wine”) and other great actors, so he became typecast. “Up until now, really, this movie is the first time somebody like Sofia [Coppola] said, ‘Well there’s another side to Stephen, maybe he can play the leading man, maybe he can be a little sweeter and not have to kill everybody,” Dorff suggested. “It’s nice that now I get texts after ‘Somewhere’ [that say,] ‘You make such a good dad!’ ” he reveals about his family members’ reactions to his performance in the film. “It’s so different than ‘Why were you so scary and mean?’ ”
