50 Cent Explains Commitment To ‘Things Fall Apart’

‘You don’t have to make everything personal, but that project was,’ he says of movie he lost 50 pounds for. By Shaheem Reid 50 Cent Photo: G-Unit The shocking photos that appeared earlier this week of a dramatically gaunt 50 Cent is just another example of the extremes to which he’ll go to win. The G-Unit general lost the weight for a role as a football player with cancer in the upcoming “Things Fall Apart,” and he spoke to Cleveland’s Call and Post about why the movie was worth the sacrifice. “It’s myself, Mario Van Peebles, Ray Liotta, Lynn Whitfield, and it’s a project that I wrote, produced and financed myself,” he said of the film. “It’s about a Heisman hopeful who could possibly be going to the league and everyone is assuming he’s gonna make it, and then he’s hit with an illness. I had a friend of mine who actually experienced cancer, and it’s what motivated me to write this screenplay. You don’t have to make everything personal, but that project was. That’s why I committed to playing a role where I lost 54 pounds. I had to discipline myself enough until I achieved it but … I got it.” 50 also implied that acting is a great outlet when he wants to take a break from music — particularly when he and the public don’t see eye-to-eye on what he’s cooked up in the lab. “I’m actually passionate about the actual music when it’s done right,” he said. “But, sometimes I feel like something is right that the public didn’t respond to, just me creatively. Because of that, I’ll perform the record until they actually enjoy it [ laughs ]. But the reality is they won’t embrace every idea you come up with, not all of your life. I have artists I have a lot of respect for who aren’t the same as when they started and they’re great artists. Look at Stevie Wonder. “I think the business itself is conditioned to say, ‘Out with the old in with the new,’ ” he said. “I’ll continue to make music because I love it, but I developed an interest in other areas because a lot of times to escape music, for enjoyment, I might go and watch film or television, and there’s an interest there because I’ve been utilizing that for entertainment for so long.” 50, who is now getting back to his normal size, said he was only able to take the time out to lose the weight because he financed the movie himself. “There’s not a whole lot of actual situations where a studio will break for four months to allow the talent to make the transition they allowed Tom Hanks to make in ‘Philadelphia,’ ” he pointed out. “You gotta be Tom Hanks for that to happen.” 50 launches the Invitation Tour on Friday (May 28) in Cleveland, a place he hasn’t played since he and Jay-Z toured with Rock the Mic in 2003. “I haven’t toured in the U.S. in three years, so I wanted to choose somewhere that wasn’t like home plate,” said 50, who also revealed that despite Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks being free agents, G-Unit Records still has a home at Interscope. Do you think you could go to the same extremes 50 Cent does to get what you want? Talk about it in the comments. Related Artists 50 Cent

Drake Calls Jay-Z Collaboration, ‘Light Up,’ A ‘Turning Point’

‘Jay not only gave me a great verse, but a life lesson,’ the Toronto MC says of Jay’s contribution. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: Matt Harper/ MTV News Drake gave careful consideration to where on the track list each song would fall on his forthcoming Thank Me Later, from the introspective “Fireworks,” now the album opener, to the rumbling “Over,” which he described as a “turning point” on the album. “We took a trip to Jamaica, where I did a lot of work for my album,” Drake told MTV News about “Over” in March. “There was this calm before the storm, and ‘Over’ represented the storm to me. It’s the moment. I wanted to emerge at first from this album and just let people know ‘This is how I’m coming out in the public eye. I’m ready for anything.’ ” The second turning point, though, according to the Toronto MC, is “Light Up,” his recently leaked collaboration with Jay-Z . On that track, produced by Tone Mason and Noah “40” Shebib, the Brooklyn MC schools Drizzy on life at the top of the game. While the middle section of Thank Me Later is heavy on blockbuster collabos, including features by Nicki Minaj, T.I. and Swizz Beatz, The-Dream and Young Jeezy, “Light Up” kicks off the concluding portion of the album. ” ‘Light Up’ really came from, Jay had a busy year, obviously, with The Blueprint 3 and the success of that and the tour,” Drake told MTV News about how the ‘tune came to be. “So we didn’t do it in the same room. But me and Jay have a lot of great conversations, man. So it would never just be like, ‘I’m gonna send you something, and we’re not gonna talk about it, and you send it back. We really talked about it. “And Jay’s joint on the album is so important on the album, because it’s another turning point. Whereas “Over” is a turning point for me, “Light Up” … Jay, really, I think it’s one of my favorite Jay verses. Jay not only gave me a great verse, but a life lesson. And I think he’s gonna give everybody a life lesson just about this business. It’s incredible.” What do you think of Drake collaborating with Jay-Z? Let us know in the comments! Crystal Bowersox On ‘American Idol’ Outcome: ‘We Both Win’

‘My life is never going to be the same, and I’m ready for all of it,’ she says backstage after the finale. By Kelley L. Carter Crystal Bowersox Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — Don’t cry for Crystal Bowersox. Before Ryan Seacrest announced Lee DeWyze as the new American Idol , the single mom said she knew she wouldn’t be taking home the top prize. “I knew Lee was going to win,” she said backstage, minutes after the finale ended. “People seem to be surprised by that. But I had a feeling. I couldn’t be happier for him. He deserves every minute of this. There wasn’t really a reason why [I thought I wouldn’t win]. It was just something that I felt and I knew, and I’m fine with that. Before the show … I had this strange sense of peace and calm. I’ve been that way through the whole season. If you haven’t noticed, I’m just mellow. I was ready and willing … for the outcome. We both win. It’s not win or lose; it’s winner and non-winner. Both of us are going to have very successful careers, and we’re going to be friends for a long time.” For Bowersox, winning was performing alongside Alanis Morissette and Joe Cocker. She also said she was moved by the tributes for Simon Cowell . “Joe Cocker is a living legend, and every noise, grunt that came out of him, every fiber in my being felt it,” she said. “He didn’t give me any advice, but he kept calling me ‘Angel.’ He said, ‘I know your name is Crystal, but I want to call you Angel.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s fine. You can call me whatever you want. You’re Joe Cocker!’ ” Bowersox said she learned a lot about herself during the “American Idol” experience. The most important lesson? “I can walk in heels — downstairs, nonetheless,” she said, joking about her Tuesday night performance, where she wobbled a bit in high heels. “I’ve learned a lot about myself and I’ve learned a lot about the business. I already knew who I was, but I’m picking the things that I like and adding to it. My life is never going to be the same, and I’m ready for all of it.” Up next, Bowersox says she’s going to go “hug my baby boy and get back to living.” She’ll start to prepare for the summer tour and also plans to get to work on her album. “Now the real work begins,” she said. Here is an exclusive clip from Vivid of the Kendra Wilkinson sex tape everyone is excited about. I have no real opinion about this clip mainly because I don’t really like anything about Kendra Wilkinson or her prostitute life other than the fact that she gets naked for money and now has sex for money…and I think more girls should take her lead…cuz I like watching…. There are rumors that the video was actually shopped around by her to boost her career she doesn’t want to see drown, which I think it is safe to say is fact but really who cares about the business behind the shit, let’s focus on what is more important and that is the fact that this shit exists and is getting out there…. Seeing any 18 year ass is getting fucked in video that you can buy later today is amazing….especially when it is 18 year olds who are no longer 18 but who we’ve got to know on TV and in Playboy….kinda like reminding us all of what could have been had things panned out different before ruining her vagina with kids…. Eliot Spitzer to Replace Campbell Brown?

The candlelight vigils for CNN’ s kamikaze anchoress Campbell Brown are over, and so it’s time to get down to the business of replacing her at 8 p.m. And if we’re continuing in her spirit of candor, then this is as good an idea as any: Erstwhile NY governor, escort connoisseur and “budding pundit” Eliot Spitzer. “He’s a smart guy, extremely smart. And he communicates well,” an anonymous cable news executive told the NYT . “The question about him is, how much stench is on him, and is he likable enough?” Those are two questions, of course, the answers to which are not much and not really, which of course means he’s a perfect fit on CNN, right? [ NYT ]

In Memoriam: American Idol’s Casey James

I’m sad. Sure. But I also want to hold up my old Illinois driver’s license with Norma Rae grit and proclaim, “Take that, American South!” For only the second time in American Idol ‘s history, its Final Two has no connections to the dusty south. That’s not good or bad, but it’s a welcome change of pace. (No offense to Kris Allen — I voted for you, tender dawg!) Now, to attend to the business at hand: Our deceased pony Casey James enjoyed a resilient run, establishing himself as season nine’s resident dark horse . His proudest moments involved simple ballads, sincerity, and keeping his shirt on. Let’s reflect on the Cool, Texas, native’s curvy, paisley-print journey on American Idol and guess what might’ve been had he made the finale.

The City Recap: Whitney Port’s French Kiss-Off

Whitney Port’s dating history on the The City has been suspect to say the least. Jay Lyon? That hairy freeloader acted like he was “putting that on lockdown” when really he just needed a place to stay before he left with his band on tour. Freddie Fackelmayer ? That dude was pretty harmless, but a colossal douche. Last night, Whitney was looking for inspiration for her look book, and confides that the photographer for her line shoot suggested getting together for a drink. The French photographer. Poor Whitney Port . Can’t resist the foreign hotties. Meanwhile, Olivia and Erin clash at work! Color us shocked! Read on for THG’s plus-minus recap of last night’s The City episode, “Queen of Diamonds” … NOT POKER FACE : Whitney wears her emotions on her sleeve . We’ll start with Whitney’s date attire. That glittery striped silver sweatshirt thing? We’ve seen better. Minus 2 . But Plus 2 because it wasn’t straight up skanky. In meeting Jonathan for said drink, Port is surprised when he arrives on his motorcycle … Plus 8 . He says he liked her designs and the shoot went well. Plus 3 . Whitney asks if wants to shoot her lookbook and he says yes. Mmm . Minus 4 , because this will inevitably blur the business/pleasure line and not end well for Whit. Joe Zee gathers the Elle team to discuss the Fergie cover, and asks Olivia to stay behind. Plus 11 when he says, accurately, that her work needs to be consistent. Back in New York, Olivia Palermo showcases her “strength” and helps editor Alexis choose Fergie’s jewelry for the shoot. Plus 1 for paying her dues, we guess. JOB WELL DONE? Some people briefly said this about Olivia Palermo! Erin Kaplan tells Joe that picking out a necklace is “not enough.” Not remotely. Plus 7 , because somebody’s gotta call her out and drill it into Joe’s head. Joe says Olivia’s diamonds made the cover, but naturally Erin thinks it was Fergie and the whole outfit that sold it. Yeah, but Minus 3 for the obvious bias. Oh, but wait! The final cover of Fergie is a shot of her not wearing jewelry. Joe says Erin was right. Plus 30 for Erin finally sticking it to her painful nemesis. Whitney tells Roxy she had a good time with Jonathan but not that good. Minus 9 for getting into the awkward situation of accepting his help, then … Whit drops the “I don’t have time for a social life” bomb, i.e. the career-girl version of “It’s not you it’s me.” Weak. If you want to, you make it work. Minus 15 . TOTAL: +26. SEASON: -83 .
