Times Publisher Parties in Phoenix While Paper Gets Pinched [Out Of Touch]

A provocative bar scene involving Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and his female companion helped whip gossip about the pair into a frenzy, according to a journalism-conference spy. As if the New York Times publisher needed to seem more provocative. A business journalism conference in Phoenix last week was rife with rumors about Sulzberger and Katherine Kristof , a CBS MoneyWatch columnist with whom Sulzberger was seen getting “friendly,” as we reported last week. We’d heard the pair were together for much of the weekend. Another conference participant says gossip about the two turned especially dirty after Sulzberger and Kristof were seen at the bar at Phoenix’s downtown Sheraton hotel, following a conference awards dinner at the Heard Museum Saturday night. Kristof, who shared a table with Sulzberger at the dinner, is said to have stayed conspicuously close to Sulzberger from the moment he arrived at the bar. That only made her and Sulzberger’s later disappearance from the establishment all the more noticeable. The rumor mill went into overdrive with chatter, circulating throughout the day Sunday, that the pair was, if not in a relationship, then at least having some casual fun. Even if the most salacious of the rumors are true — and media wags have been wrong about Sulzberger’s love live before — there’s no big scandal to hide here. Sulzberger announced a separation from his wife two years ago, and Kristof is apparently single. But it would be advisable these days for Sulzberger to tone down any public partying with his babe, or to at least remove it from rooms filled with the cream of the business press corps. His executive team just doled out $12 million or so in bonuses, hiking his own pay to $5.9 million (and either doubling it or raising it 32 percent , depending who you ask). Staffers are said to be up in arms over the payouts amid layoffs at the Times and pay cuts at the New York Times Company’s Boston Globe . There’s no need to bait the scolds with any evidence of indiscretion. On the other hand, some more public hookups just might shut up the juvenile sucker punchers who lay out the Weekend Journal . We’d enjoy that.

Katy Perry’s Stay Slim Secrets

Besides working out, Katy Perry keeps trim munching on her favorite food. “I love mushrooms. I could eat a ton of them. I really love truffles but I hardly ever get them. Mushrooms in general though are so healthy and good for you. I can’t get enough.” As for what she stays away from… The pop star won’t go near pizza or Chinese food because it makes her (and everyone else on the planet) gain weight. Eazy-E, N.W.A ‘Helped Me Understand I Had A Chance,’ Plies Says

Florida native pays tribute to Eazy on the 15th anniversary of N.W.A. founder’s death. By Shaheem Reid Plies and Big Gates Photo: MTV News Plies has long been called a rebel of the music industry, to the extent that some say he embodies the same radical spirit as the members of N.W.A. On Friday (March 26), the 15th anniversary of the death of N.W.A founder Eric “Eazy-E” Wright , Plies and his brother Big Gates reflected on Eazy’s impact. During a visit to MTV News’ offices on Friday, Plies said Eazy and N.W.A.’s music resonates no matter where you’re from. “Being Florida based, where we’ve resided all our life, I look at Florida as the gutter landmark,” Plies said. “I feel that it don’t work in Florida if it ain’t gutta. To see a West Coast group and West Coast artist being embraced in Florida, and on a national level, for me, it’s simple. Coming from the conditions we come from and having anybody represent what you represent and see them win on a national level, it allowed me to understand that I had a chance in music if it was what I chose to do. “I had a chance to accomplish that and do it from a principle-driven way,” he continued. “[Gates and I] say that all the time as brothers and as a company, our principles are non-negotiable. It’s a lot of things we stand for that the business don’t understand right now. We agree that it’s more personal in this business than it is business. At the end of the day, you gotta stand for what you’re trying to represent and reflect. I feel Eazy-E and N.W.A did a helluva job in doing that. I don’t feel like we’re carrying the torch, I feel like we’re trying to stand behind what we’re trying to stand behind. If that’s a way we can be come successful in selling records, cool. If it ain’t, we can look at each other and know we came into the game with our principles and we’re gonna leave the game with our principles.” “I was just listening to a Eazy-E record,” Gates said with a grin. “They started, really, what we’re doing. We looked at them. Even now, we look at them as a influence of what we do. N.W.A speaks for itself. I’m sure you know what it means: N—as With Attitude. You listen to my brother’s music, you see what we representing. I just got out of prison. It’s kinda simple, what we stand for: That’s really what Easy-E brought to the table. He told America, ‘I can say what I wanna say. Speak my mind. Freedom of speech. Regardless of how you feel, what you think I should say, what you think I should wear, I’mma do me.’ I came from a different struggle versus [people in] corporate America. Eazy spoke for me, so I try to make sure me and my brother speak for the people from where we came from.” Check out what the Game and other West Coast rappers had to say about Eazy-E on the 15th anniversary of his death. Eazy-E Remembered By The Game, Nipsey Hussle, Scoop DeVille

‘He is the original blueprint for West Coast gangsta rap,’ Jay Rock says on the 15th anniversary of Eazy’s death. By Shaheem Reid Eazy E Photo: Ruthless Records Friday (March 26) marks the 15th anniversary of Eric “Eazy-E” Wright ‘s death from AIDS complications. The N.W.A founder was a musical pioneer — not just for bringing gangsta rap to the mainstream, but because of how he revolutionized the business side of the game as well. He mastered self-promotion and pushed records independently with little-to-no airplay. Eazy’s legacy speaks for itself, and his impact still resonates. Some of the younger L.A. acts wrote in to MTV News to talk about Eazy’s influence. “Eazy-E was the pioneer and ambassador of L.A.’s street culture in hip-hop,” Nipsey Hussle said. “He embodied the mind state and attitude of a young man coming of age in urban Los Angeles.” “Eazy-E started this gangsta sh–,” Jay Rock proclaimed. “He took it to a whole new level. If it wasn’t for him, it wouldn’t be no Ice Cube, no Snoop, no Game or no Jay Rock. He is the original blueprint for West Coast gangsta rap.” The Game’s love for Eazy-E is well-documented. The Compton, California, native has a picture of Eazy and N.W.A tattooed on his body. Game’s message about Eazy was short and sweet: “Replacing Eazy is Eazy-er said than done.” Earlier this week, producer Scoop DeVille sat in an LA studio with his father, Kid Frost, and remembered talking to Eazy. “Eazy would call the house and say, ‘Tell your pop Eric called,’ ” Scoop recalled. Frost signed to Ruthless Records in the mid-1990s, and shortly before Wright died, Kid was supposed to head the newly started Latin division of the label. “I can say that dude had a big heart and love for the whole movement of the West Coast sound of gangsta rap,” Frost declared. “He definitely was the godfather of gangsta rap. There’s still not a lot of records I hear to this day that can hold water to what he was doing with Dr. Dre, like Straight Outta Compton. I’ll always be part of the Ruthless family. I’ll always be the first Mexican that got signed to Ruthless Records.” “Eazy was a real dude,” Scoop added. “He was a businessman and a street dude. He has everyone’s respect to this day.” How has Eazy-E’s music impacted your life? Share your memories the comments section below. Related Photos N.W.A. Tech N9ne Says He Found Success On The Road

The independent rapper explains to Mixtape Daily how touring builds his fanbase. By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Tech N9ne Photo: MTV News Cornerstone Credentials Tech N9ne certainly isn’t a household name. He isn’t necessarily a big name in the realm of hip-hop either, but thanks to appearing at festivals like Rock the Bells and touring on his own, he’s been able to sell over a million records and build a solid, dedicated fanbase. As he prepares to drop his newest album, The Ollie Gates Mixed Plate, named after a restaurant in his hometown of Kansas City, Missouri, he told Mixtape Daily about the unconventional road he took to get here. “Being involved in all of those major labels in the past, nobody knew really how to do me, how to put me,” Tech said. “But who knows how to do me better than anybody: me.” He and his business partner, Travis O’Guin, formed their independent Strange Music label in 1999. Since then, they have enjoyed complete autonomy to do whatever they wanted with their music and their appearance. That’s also meant that he’s been able to go on tour to places where no one knew who he was. Tech said that they would play small-town shows with only 10 people in the audience, and he would still perform. When they came back the next time, there would be 30 people, and 200 people the following time. “If you want to be the hip-hop president, you’ve got to get out there and politic,” reasoned the rapper who won the Left Field Woodie Award from mtvU last year. Tech estimated that he does about 200 shows per year, a schedule that’s more typical of a rock band. All the money they make on tour is pumped back into Strange Music as they sign other artists to the label. They’ve also built a huge $1.2 million facility in Kansas City. He isn’t surprised that other artists have started to go independent and tour heavily to support themselves. In the digital world, artists have had to find new ways to sell their music to the people. Meanwhile, he said major labels are failing because they don’t take the time to build their artists’ fanbase. “We have that core fanbase that’s always going to be there, so whether we put out CDs, whether it’s going to be on iTunes or whatever, our fans are always going to be there,” Tech N9ne said. “A lot of these major cats don’t even have that. A lot of these major cats have sold over a million copies, but can’t get 1,000 people to come see them. … That ain’t for us, though.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .

Rihanna Takes Drum Lessons From Travis Barker Before Tour

‘She jams! Watch out for her,’ Barker tweets. By James Montgomery Rihanna and Travis Barker Photo: Travis Barker Rihanna ‘s European tour doesn’t kick off until next month (with a full U.S. jaunt scheduled for the summer), but from the looks of things it’s already shaping up to be a can’t-miss show. That’s because, in addition to the usual ephemera — Lights! Props! Costumes! — Rih Rih is also expanding her repertoire for the tour by learning how to play the drums. And she’s taking lessons from one of the best in the business: noted metronome/masher Travis Barker . Late Tuesday (March 23), Barker’s reps sent MTV News a photo of the dynamic duo after a recent practice at the Hollywood Center Studios and the Blink-182 smasher included a note that promised that not only will Rihanna be playing live onstage (no click track here), but that “she’s really good.” He later posted even more about the rehearsals on his Twitter account , writing, “She Jams! Watch out for her!” We’re inclined to believe him because at this point, Barker has collaborated with practically everyone under the sun, including his current gig with DJ A-Trak , which he unveiled earlier this month with a string of shows at the Roxy Theatre in Hollywood. Rihanna’s European tour gets underway April 16 in Antwerp, Belgium, and runs until early June. She’s also set to perform at the upcoming Kids’ Choice Awards, along with the likes of Justin Bieber. There are no firm dates for her U.S. tour, but it is reportedly set to kick off this summer.
