Frank Ocean’s Manager Issues Apology To Target Frank Ocean’s manager did some damage control after recently posting a tweet that had fans in an uproar over Target’s decision not to carry the recently-outed singer’s new album . A manager for R&B singer Frank Ocean, who publicly came out of the closet last week, apologized to retail giant Target after suggesting that they would not be selling his clients CD because of his sexual orientation, according to a report from Billboard magazine. Target revealed that it would not be carrying Ocean’s debut studio album “Channel Orange,” due to the label’s decision to sell it digitally on iTunes ahead of its scheduled release date. But while Ocean’s manager Christian Clancy, announced via his Twitter page that they would not carry the disc due to the iTunes exclusive, he also implied that the decision had something to do with his admission about his sexuality. “Target has refused to carry Frank’s album because of iTunes exclusive,” Clancy initially tweeted.. “Interesting since they also donate to non-equal rights organizations.” But Target later issued a statement to Billboard magazine, denying that Ocean’s sexuality played any role in the matter. “The claims made about Target’s decision to not carry the Frank Ocean album are absolutely false. Target supports inclusivity and diversity in every aspect of our business. Our assortment decisions are based on a number of factors, including guest demand.” Clancy later backtracked on his tweet, saying “I apologize for my comments about Target. They are not carrying Frank’s album because it went digital first. Not for ANY other reason. … My response was simply an emotional knee jerk reaction. … Stop. Breath. Do the best you can. Be honest. Not so, as demonstrated by his work in his latest film, “People Like Us,” which revolves around a man who is tasked with delivering a $150,000 inheritance to a sister ( Elizabeth Banks ) he has never met. MTV News recently sat down with Pine to discuss the unique tone and subject matter addressed in the film, which is based on the real-life experiences of its writing team, Alex Kurtzman (who also served as its director), Bob Orci and Jody Lambert, and is not necessarily the type of movie that big studios are gunning to green-light. “Everyone I’ve talked to at the studio level who makes these decisions, it seems like it’s become an even more bottom-line kind of industry, so movies like ‘Paranormal Activity’ or something that’s made for $3 million and goes on to gross $200 million or the big tentpoles that have the big marketing machines behind it, those are the movies they have to make,” Pine said about studios feeling pressured to churn out surefire blockbusters. “It’s a real tribute to DreamWorks and to Steven Spielberg. First of all, Alex wrote a great script and as much as the business of show business can sometimes dominate at the end of the day, people in what we do, we love good stories, we are hungry for good stories,” he explained of the selling point of “People Like Us.” “I think if something like ‘The Artist,’ a silent film in black-and-white with French actors can do well. I think it’s a great sign that in our times you can have both; you can have ‘The Avengers’ and you can also have films like ours, which are smaller.” Pine said what he hopes people will enjoy in watching “People Like Us” is the fact that it features realistic characters trying to solve realistic problems, in addition to its old-school dramedy vibe influenced by James L. Brooks and Cameron Crowe. “Alex talks very much about his influences — Brooks, Cameron Crowe, obviously — we always talked about ‘Ordinary People’ and ‘Kramer vs. Kramer.’ What’s great about those films, there’s nothing hooking you other than hopefully a story about a family that you relate to because it looks very much like your own, so it doesn’t necessarily mean these people have to go a great many places,” he said. ” ‘Kramer vs. Kramer’ is a great example. You get lost in the minutia of this world of a kid making waffles or was it pancakes? We’ll have to look that up. That’s the world Alex wanted to create. And while one aspect of his performance was all acting (that would be his scenes with actress Minka Kelly), the other was very real indeed. That’s according to “One More Night” director Peter Berg, who sat down with MTV News to talk about the clip ahead of its debut — tonight (June 25) at 7:53 p.m. on MTV as part of “MTV First: Maroon 5” — and made it very clear that Levine pulled no punches during the filming. In fact, he even took a couple punches from one of the best in the business. “Adam Levine learned how to box here, at the world-famous Wild Card Boxing Gym, home of Manny Pacquiao and [trainer] Freddie Roach,” Berg said. “The idea for the video was Adam’s. He called me and said, ‘I wrote this treatment. Would you read it?’ He had this idea, sort of comparing fighting to love, and so I called Freddie, who was a friend of mine, and I said, ‘I need you to train this guy.’ ” “Of course, Freddie was working Manny Pacquiao at the time [for this month’s bout against Tim Bradley], so we had to find one of his trainers, and so we found this great trainer and put him through a 10-day boxing program,” he continued. “And the truth is, this kid is just a natural athlete. He took to it very quickly, and we were able to get into sparring scenarios in the ring. … We had to see how Adam would react to somebody punching him in the face, whether he’d run out screaming and call his bodyguards. But I remember the first time he got cracked in the head, he had a big smile on his face.” Levine definitely wasn’t smiling through his scenes with Kelly, who plays the mother of his newborn child. We won’t spoil how their relationship plays out, but let’s just say she doesn’t think his boxing career is going to succeed anytime soon. Though, as Berg explained, shooting those scenes was about as tough as the “One More Night” video got, because from the first sparring session to the final edit, he was definitely feeling the love on this one. “Minka’s a fan of Maroon 5 and she said she’d do it, and we had a great time shooting the video,” he said. “I was always a Maroon 5 fan, and now they’re in my heart and they’re a part of my family.” Don’t miss the premiere of Maroon 5’s “One More Night” video during “MTV First: Maroon 5” tonight at 7:53 p.m. on MTV, followed by a 30-minute Q&A with the band on MTV.com.
