Mo Money: Lockout Puts Plenty Paper In Owners Hands But Leaves Players With Less Than Before!!!

The NBA lockout is a wrap, so what exactly was all the fuss over again? The Wall Street Journal did a breakdown of who stands to gain the most from the agreement and they’re saying the owners are definitely #winning: The biggest changes will be off the court after owners scored an obvious economic win. The two sides will split the league’s $4 billion in annual revenue almost equally, while in previous agreements the players received 57%. On the court, despite systematic changes like reducing contract length and increasing fees for high-spending teams, most think it will be business as usual. “It’s not exactly the same as it’s always been, but it’s closest to that than something new—this is not a seismic shift,” said Tom Penn, a former Portland Trailblazers executive and a salary-cap expert. “The system still favors aggressive owners who are in go-for-it mode. It will just cost them more.” The league also scored a victory on the business side. The 10-year deal, with an option to terminate after six years by either side, saves not only this season but also the NBA’s image as a viable option for advertising. “The big winners are anyone involved in marketing and financing in the NBA—the advertisers, the sponsors, they’ve got continuity now,” said David Carter, executive director of the Sports Business Institute at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. “A lot of people are focusing on what this means right away, but you have to look at it as 10 years that marketing partners and TV partners know they have this.” The NBA salvages its national TV contract with Walt Disney Co.’s ESPN and ABC and Time Warner Inc.’s Turner Sports, which pay the league a combined $930 million per year. Advertisers spent $807 million on NBA games that aired on cable and network TV last season, according to WPP PLC’s Kantar Media. An average of two million people watched regular-season NBA games last year on ESPN, while an average of 2.5 million watched such games on Turner’s TNT, according to Nielsen. NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said that competitive advantage was “critical” in the negotiations and that the goal of the new deal was for all 30 teams to compete. But USC’s Mr. Carter said although that will be a valuable ticket-selling message for small-market teams, it will still be a “rarity” for small teams to compete at the level of more high-profile teams under the new deal. Mr. Penn, who is now an analyst at ESPN, said small-market teams will still face the same obstacles in the new system, adding that for struggling teams to “make financial ends meet and spend the money you need, it would be nearly impossible to keep up with the Joneses.” The other losers, Mr. Penn said, are the stars. “This is a tough deal for the superstars,” he said. “The years of contract they can sign for goes down, the annual raises go down, maximum salaries over the long term will either level off or go down depending on the salary cap. Once again they won’t be getting their fair share.” Not every star will suffer however. Mr. Penn said that the short-term beneficiaries of the resolution are the Miami Heat, which has three stars—LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade—in the lineup whose contracts have been set, while the rest of the league enters a frantic free-agency period. “I would say the losers in many ways are the fans because you don’t know what product you’re going to get for a significant amount of money,” said Jeff Van Gundy, an ESPN commentator and former NBA coach who took the New York Knicks to the Finals during the lockout-shortened 1999 season. “If you look at it, the drop in the offensive numbers in 1999 was significant, the efficiency of players was poor,” Mr. Van Gundy said. “You can’t skip steps [like training camp], and what the NBA and its players have agreed to is skipping steps and then saying ‘OK, let’s go play great basketball’—and it doesn’t happen that way and the people that pay the brunt of that are the fans.” Training camps and free agency will launch simultaneously on Dec. 9, NBA Commissioner David Stern said, meaning that some teams will start practice with only a handful of players while trying to recruit others. To add to the unpredictability, the league has yet to unveil its 66-game schedule, which is set to begin Dec. 25. SMH @ the Shady Dream Team coming up roses in this deal while the current free agents have no chance of getting those kinds of sweet deals. More On Bossip! (Sk)interest Spikes in Natalie Wood as Police (Re)Investigate Her Death [PICS]

The top five most-searched celebs at Mr. Skin are usually a pretty predictable lot- a couple of marquee stars ( Angelina Jolie , Jennifer Aniston ), a couple of evergreen favorites ( Jennifer Connelly , Alyssa Milano ), and one non-nude but sexy starlet thrown in for good measure ( Mila Kunis , Kristen Stewart ). That’s not to say these actresses aren’t hot- they’re the very finest in the business- but sometimes we wish a beloved, but lesser known, star would get her day in the sun. Recently the name Natalie Wood has been dominating the headlines after the LA County Sheriff’s Department announced they were re-opening the case of Natalie’s death, 30 years after officially declaring it an accident. We’ve seen an accompanying surge in (sk)interest in the star, who is currently #4 and rising on Mr. Skin’s list of popular celebrities despite only one nude role- the swingin’ flick Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice (1969). We’ve always been fond of this good girl who was wild at heart, and while the circumstances may be tragic, the sight of this brunette sex kitten, who was tragically cut down at the young age of 43, will always be sweet. See more pics of Natalie Wood after the jump!

‘Hugo’: The Reviews Are In!

Most critics praise film’s visuals and performances, although some take issue with its length. By Eric Ditzian Asa Butterfield in “Hugo” Photo: Paramount Pictures We’re big “Hugo” fans here in the MTV Newsroom, as we make clear over at Movies Blog , calling Martin Scorsese’s 3-D film a “love letter to cinema” and “like nothing you’ve ever seen from the Oscar-winning filmmaker before.” We’re not the only ones raving about it. Critics are celebrating the movie’s bold visual style and strong performances. The only issue anyone seems to have with “Hugo” is that there’s just too much of it: The story — following the young orphan Hugo’s (Asa Butterfield) adventures in a 1930s Parisian metro station, his battles with the station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen) and his friendship with a girl (Chlo

Avril Lavigne Will Be ‘Bundled Up’ For Macy’s Parade

Goodbye Lullaby singer will perform ‘Wish You Were Here’ on Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, also featuring Daniel Radcliffe. By Jocelyn Vena Avril Lavigne Photo: MTV News Avril Lavigne will join the likes of Cee Lo Green, “How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying” star Daniel Radcliffe , Mary J. Blige and Cobra Starship for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, airing live, as you might expect, on Turkey Day Thursday. The Goodbye Lullaby singer stopped by the MTV News offices to tease fans about what to expect from her come show day. “I’m going to be performing on a float and singing my new single ‘Wish You Were Here,’ and I am planning on being very bundled up,” she said, laughing. “And I’ve never performed in a parade before. Actually, I’ve been in a parade: I used to be a highland dancer in my hometown growing up, so I did stuff like that. “I’m singing full on on a float — it’s gonna be cool,” she added. “New York right now, it’s so pretty, and everyone’s super getting into the holiday season, so I’m excited. I’m really happy to be a part of it.” A native Canadian, Lavigne already celebrated her country’s Thanksgiving last month, but loves the chance to double up on the holiday once November rolls around. “I’m Canadian, and our Canadian Thanksgiving is a month before yours,” she said. “But I live here [in the U.S.], so I celebrate both. I do Thanksgiving twice a year, and it really depends on where I’m traveling and where I’m at, but I’m going to celebrate it this year, and I’m in the States. And I was with my family in Canada this year [for Canadian Thanksgiving], and we’re gonna definitely do the whole friends and family sit-down, pig-out Thanksgiving.” Lavigne shared some dishes she likes to fill up on: “I like the potatoes. I like doing squash. If I ever cook it, I like doing butternut squash with rosemary. Sometimes you put brown sugar on it, if you want to be bad, and maple syrup, if you really want to be really bad. Butternut squash and stuffing.” Will you be watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday? Share your plans below! Daniel Radcliffe: Actor We’re Most Thankful For In 2011

‘Harry Potter’ star refers to 2011 as ‘not a breakout year, a breakaway year.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News After our nods to rising stars Elizabeth Olsen , Michael Fassbender and Tom Hiddleston , MTV Movies’ Thankful Week continues with — drum roll, please — the actor we’re most thankful for in 2011: Daniel Radcliffe. Really, what’s not to like about this talented young man? He’s dazzled audiences for more than a decade as “the boy who lived” in eight “Harry Potter” films and has most recently been the talk of the Great White Way with his critically acclaimed work in the musical “How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.” We feel pretty confident in saying that the future looks bright for this guy. MTV News recently caught up with Radcliffe to get a sense of how he’s feeling post-Potter and where he wants to be in 10 years. MTV : This is your first full year working outside “Harry Potter.” How has it been? Daniel Radcliffe : It’s been a great first year away from “Potter.” It’s been very successful. I’ve done some work I’m really proud of in that time, particularly onstage in “How to Succeed.” Just the process of doing it and doing it and doing it, I’ve got so much better, I think, during the run, as is the way it should be. It’s been a great year, but I think next year is the big one for me. “The Woman in Black” is coming out, and I’ve also got a couple other things I’ll be doing. The next two or three years are going to be pretty important, I think, and if [2011] is not a breakout year, it’s a breakaway year. MTV : What was the highlight for you this year? Radcliffe : [Performing at] the Tony Awards, definitely. We were the first show to perform, and there is just that weird moment when you’re all standing there. I haven’t been that nervous in a long time. I don’t think I was as nervous on our opening night as I was at the Tonys. I was really, really nervous. Suddenly that huge LED screen goes up, and you’re all revealed like prizes on a game show, and Al Pacino is in the front row, sitting next to Bobby Cannavale, sitting next to Mark Rylance, all these brilliant actors, and you have to do your number. That’s probably a surreal, weird triumphant moment of that year, performing on the Tonys. That’s pretty cool. That’s something I will be able to tell my grandchildren that I did. MTV : What have you learned about yourself and your work abilities? Radcliffe : I think the most vital thing I’ve learned — and this is a thing I have to adapt and be able to find throughout my career, be it onstage or film in comedy or drama — is that the more I try and suppress my own natural oddness, the less successful I am. I have a slightly staccato way of moving and talking … the realization hit me that I’m working so hard to try and be something else, and actually, I just have to learn to be my most natural self onstage or onscreen, however that comes across. That is one of the biggest lessons there is: Don’t shy away from your own weirdness. Own your oddness. MTV : Would you consider taking a role in a movie musical? Radcliffe : Yeah, definitely. My hesitation about doing this one [“How to Succeed”] is that I’ve played parts for a long time, and I’ll have spent a long time with this, and I want my career to be about getting as many different characters under my belt as I possibly can. But yeah, I would love to, provided it was the right one, because they can go wrong. They can go spectacularly wrong, so we’ll see. MTV : Looking back at “Potter” and going through the huge promotional push surrounding the final film, was any of that surprising in any way even though you’d been through it so many times before? Radcliffe : It’s always what it is. I have a slight tendency when you’re doing these insane press days where you do a few interviews then the red carpet and it’s just mad, I have a slight tendency to shut down and go on autopilot just to get through it and not feel completely weirded out by the whole thing. What was strange to me was, in a way I felt slightly bad because I wasn’t getting upset like everyone else was. I’ve seen Rupert Grint cry once, on the last day of filming, when I was also in bits, but I’ve never seen Rupert get emotional like he did at the premiere … I cannot go on enough about how much I loved my time on “Potter.” It was the most amazing, happy time, but all good things must come to an end. We couldn’t have gone on forever. As much as people wanted us to, it would have been terrible. I’m glad to have done it and gone out on such a high note and now be moving on as we all are. MTV : Do you hope you’ll continue to have a relationship with J.K. Rowling? Radcliffe : I hope so, yeah, I really hope so. For somebody that was indirectly and directly such a huge influence on my life, I really hope so. I don’t know if she’s going to write anything else about Harry, but maybe I could direct something in years to come or something; we know each other. MTV : Looking ahead 10 years, what do you hope to be doing, best and worst case scenario? Radcliffe : My worst nightmare is that in 10 years, I will be not working and not doing anything. Even if in five years time I decide to leave the film industry and go off and become an archaeologist, even if I’m doing that, that’s great, fine. Best-case scenario is that in 10 years time, I’ll have got a good few films under my belt, I don’t know how many that would be … suppose we did eight “Potter” movies in 10 [years]; double that, maybe 16? Who knows. Hopefully I’ll do a few films with very different parts, very different directors, and ideally, I would have liked to direct something by then; that’s the ambition. I do feel having spent so much time on a film set, I would have a very good idea of how to run a film set, how to lead that set and, I don’t know, I love telling stories, so I would like that as a job.
