LL Cool J Salutes Hip-Hop’s Growth At BET Awards

‘To go from an hour or two hours at night to entire award shows … that’s a big thing,’ LL tells MTV News on black carpet. By Rob Markman LL Cool J Photo: MTV News Who would’ve thought that hip-hop would take it this far? When he got his start in 1984, LL Cool J remembers how the genre was marginalized in the media, but Tuesday night’s 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards are a definite sign of the times. “When we first started the music, they didn’t even play it on the radio in the daytime,” BET’s I Am Hip Hop Icon Award winner told MTV News on the show’s black carpet. “Hip-hop was two hours at night or an hour at night on the weekends, and that was it. So to go from an hour or two hours at night to entire award shows and whole generations of people whose lives have been changed just because they’re involved with the music, that’s a big thing.” The awards shows started off with a bang. Young Jeezy opened with his new single “F.A.M.E.” and gave way to T.I. on the song’s final verse, marking the first television appearance for the King of the South since his prison release in September. Lil Wayne — who was nominated for an astounding 18 awards — took home five, while Busta Rhymes accepted four on behalf of his absent “Look at Me Now” collaborator Chris Brown. Nicki Minaj was named MVP of the Year, while Wiz Khalifa took home the Rookie of the Year award. Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy won CD of the Year, and Jay-Z was crowned Hustler of the Year. The show’s live performances were something to marvel at, as DMX and Swizz Beatz surprised viewers with a medley of classics. Big Sean and Wiz Khalifa rocked spirited sets, while Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group performed their singles “That Way” and “Ima Boss.” Rap icon Heavy D closed out the show, but the real highlights were the rap ciphers . B.o.B, Busta Rhymes, Ludacris, Tech N9ne, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Rick Ross all participated in the rap segments, while DJ Premier curated the rhyme showcase. “It makes me feel good to be a person that contributed, that helped make this happen,” LL said. Busta Rhymes Allegedly Gave Woman Herpes

Here is the original post:

Rapper Busta Rhymes allegedly gave a woman herpes and she is telling all via her blog. Busta’s real name Trevor Tahiem Smith, Jr. is mentioned in the message. “Busta needs to be arrested!!! How can someone get away with spreading a infectious virus that they know they have. He is cruel and the most disgusting person I’ve ever met. This is a warning, warning, WARNING stay away from him!!!!!!Be back later, I have a lot more to blog about like meeting Busta infector, my efforts to rid my body of this disease (I don’t believe in drugs), etc…The Worst Day of My Life I consider meeting Trevor or Taheim as I called him the worst day of my life. I’d known him for a few years prior to him infecting me. Not that it matters but it wasn’t a one night stand scenario. I’ve grown a lot since then and my perception of people has changed. I was young, naive and trusting. So I’m at a party and Bustas road manager Fab comes up to me and says Bus wants to meet you. Okaaayy so he was tall, handsome, suited up and polite. I was attracted to him. He looked nothing like the hot dog neck, bloated gut, washed up rapper that he looks like now. We talked for a little while and he asked me for my number and we exchanged.” What do y’all think? Spotted @ MTO DMX & Busta Rhymes “Otis” Freestyle [NEW MUSIC] Kelly Rowland’s “Motivation” Remix Ft. Styles P Breaks Down The Meaning Of ‘MC’

‘It’s my job to say something,’ rapper tells ‘RapFix Live’ of his responsibility as ‘Master of Ceremonies.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Styles P Photo: MTV News Styles P takes the title of MC very seriously. On his upcoming album Master of Ceremonies, the Ghost expands the acronym to exemplify what it means to be a rapper of the highest caliber. The LOX rhyme spitter broke it all down with Sway on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” “I named it Master of Ceremonies because I’m an MC and I felt like I’m gonna bring something to the table that a lot of people forgot about — a lost art,” Styles told Sway of his album, which drops October 4. In the beginning, it was the DJ who was the star in hip-hop. During the early house parties and park jams, the MC’s main function was to toast to the DJ using witty and rhyming wordplay. As hip-hop evolved, it was the MC or the rapper who emerged as the musical star. For Styles P, his MC influences included Rakim, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane and the seldom-celebrated New Jersey rapper Chill Rob G. So when it came time for him to grab the mic, Styles took the title very seriously. “It’s my job to say something. At the end of the day, I have to say something,” Peniro said, citing rap’s current lyrical deficiency as motivation for his first solo album in four years. The Yonkers lyricist even joked that after announcing his Master of Ceremonies album title on Twitter, one fan thought he was down with the Illuminati — a powerful, cult-like sect that conspiracy theorists accuse artists like Jay-Z and Kanye West of being involved with. “I laughed, but I was sad at the same time,” Styles said, “because to them, a master of ceremonies sounded like some Illuminati term and I was like, ‘Nah I’m an MC.’ Do your history — this is where we come from.” Styles, who is a self-described “fan of lyrics,” invited other MCs to be a part of his album. Not only do Rick Ross and Busta Rhymes appear on Master of Ceremonies ‘ lead single “Harsh,” other well-regarded spitters like Jadakiss, Sheek Louch and Lloyd Banks are represented as well. “In hip-hop, I think a lot of us forgot about MC and what MCing is,” he said. Luckily Styles P is about to give us a reminder. Related Videos Styles P, Mistah Fab, Glasses Malone On ‘RapFix Live’ Related Artists Styles P Rick Ross Busta Rhymes

Lil Wayne, Drake Insist ‘She Will’ On New Single

Slow groove features crafty verses by Weezy and a memorable Drake refrain. By Alvin Blanco Lil Wayne recording “She Will” Photo: MTV News Jay-Z and Kanye West are not the only rap duo with clout. Lil Wayne and Drake have their own collaboration in the works, and fans just got a bit of a preview with “She Will,” the latest single from Weezy’s forthcoming Tha Carter IV. Earlier this week, Tunechi released a video, shot by DJ Scoob Doo, that showed behind-the-scenes footage of him recording “She Will” with Drake providing feedback over the phone. The final product, released on Friday (August 12), features a bass-heavy, reverb-bloated slow groove provided by producer T-Minus. The song’s title makes it seem like it’s an ode to a, er, willing woman, and indeed portions of it are. But the “How to Love” rapper/singer also drops savvy bars that don’t necessarily match the theme. “What goes around comes around like a hula hoop/ Karma is a bitch, but just make sure that bitch is beautiful/ Life on the edge, I’m dangling my feet/ I tried to pay attention but attention paid me,” raps Wayne on the first verse. Drake doesn’t drop a verse on the song but performs its chorus, part singing and part rapping, “Do it for the realest n—as in the f—ing game right now she will/ Maybe for the money and the power right now she will,” on a portion of the memorable refrain. Birdman recently told XXLMag.com that Lil Wayne and Drake’s collaboration is definitely a go, though it will have to wait until after their upcoming solo efforts. Drake’s sophomore set, Take Care, is due in stores October 24, while Weezy’s much delayed Tha Carter IV will finally be available on August 29 . The latter’s track list was also recently released, revealing featured performers including T-Pain (“How to Hate”), John Legend (“So Special”) and Bun B, Nas, Shyne and Busta Rhymes on “Outro.” Drake, along with Jadakiss, appears on another song on Tha Carter IV titled “It’s Good.” Related Artists Lil Wayne Drake

DMX Violation Could Cost Him Millions [EXCLUSIVE]

Read the rest here:

Embattled rapper DMX has responded to the latest news about his extended incarceration in an Arizona jail.  Through his manager Nakia Walker, who has been working with the hip-hop legend to try and resuscitate his career since 2007, DMX exclusively revealed to TheUrbanDaily.com an impressive list of deals he has waiting for him once he gets released from Yuma State prison. “Earl has a new album about to be released, a new video game, touring opportunities, even a new reality show,” says Ms. Walker, the CEO of Built For War Management.  “He is signed to United Music & Media , a division of WEA, the videogame prototype was done by Mojo Bone Studios, and as soon as he gets out, I have a production crew who will fly out to Arizona ready to begin production on his new TV series. There are millions of dollars on the table for him…” Walker says DMX has been working on the album over the past year while in and out of jail and that the record is 85% complete. “Swizz Beatz and Dame Grease have produced it. Scott Storch and Tyrese have also been involved.”  The lead single, “Y’all Don’t Really Know” is produced by Swizz and features Busta Rhymes. Walker fears many of these plans will be on hold however, until X can get clear of his legal issues. “It’s likely DMX will remain incarcerated until August 25, but he may also face additional charges. X has a disease and that’s all his incarceration is about.  He has not hurt anybody but himself in years.” To download DMX’s new single, “Y’all Don’t Really Know,” click here

For Discussion: Lil Wayne’s Carter IV Is Finally Done…Are You Excited About It?

After push backs and delays, it looks like Lil Wayne’s latest albums is ready for world consumption…but we’re not sure if you even still care. Wayne just informed the world that Tha Carter IV is finally finished. All we know so far is that the album will feature Weezy’s Young Money crew, along with Busta Rhymes, Bun B, Tech N9ne, Cee Lo, John Legend and Will.i.am with production from Swizz Beatz, Bangladesh, Polow Da Don and Boi-1da. Sounds like an all-star line-up. Still, Wayne hasn’t been able to get the sort of buzz he’s gotten in recent years. “6’7′” didn’t take over the charts and his new “How To Love” song probably won’t be blazing in the clubs. Has Weezy lost it or are you copping the album anyway? Sound off and we’ll see what happens on August 29th when C4 drops.
