Eminem, Lil Wayne’s Bonnaroo Gig Continues Hip-Hop’s Long Festival History

From early Lollapalooza to this year’s Coachella, hip-hop has always had a place at major U.S. music gatherings. By Gil Kaufman Eminem Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage American music fans had to chuckle back in 2008, when former Oasis co-founder Noel Gallagher raised a giant stink about Jay-Z headlining the venerable Glastonbury Festival. Honestly? Hip-hop doesn’t belong at big festivals? C’mon, Noel. Well, we’ll see how much water that big cup of righteous indignation holds in the next few days as fans of Tennessee’s Bonnaroo Festival weigh in on the news that not one, but two hip-hop legends — Eminem and Lil Wayne — will top a bill that features a dozen other rappers sprinkled in among the usual cadre of jam-friendly acts indie faves and the usual classic rock big fish. While Bonnaroo’s organizers have long shunned the “jam-band” festival tag, the annual steamy gathering on a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, has hosted its fair share of noodle-tastic talent over the years. But with the booking of arguably two of the three biggest live hip-hop draws on the planet (the third, Jay-Z, played there last year ), clearly the ‘Roo is going all-in on rap in 2011. Further down the list, this year’s fest will also have sets from Atmosphere, Wiz Khalifa and Chiddy Bang. But from its very first lineup, Bonnaroo has supported rap, booking such indie groups as Blackalicious and Jurassic 5, adding in more over the years, mostly of the variety that appeal to its core audience, including RJD2, frequent guests the Roots, Common, Cypress Hill, El-P and Aesop Rock, and in 2008, Kanye West, M.I.A. and Lupe Fiasco. Though they’ve always had a place on the bill, rappers began to have a bigger presence by 2009, with the addition of Murs, the Knux, the Beastie Boys and Snoop Dogg. Then again, in 2010, even with Jay on the roster, last year’s lineup had rappers in mostly support roles, with Wale, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Jay Electronica, Kid Cudi and B.o.B hitting smaller stages. With a few exceptions, that’s been the norm at the country’s major festivals: many of the same hip-hop stars playing on the main stage, with a predictable roster of up-and-coming and established hipster acts on the side stages, though never a critical mass of either outside of purely rap-oriented events. Hip-hop has long had a headline and side stage presence at Lollapalooza with 1991’s inaugural outing featuring Ice T & Body Count, followed by Ice Cube, Basehead, Cypress Hill, House of Pain and Boo-Ya T.R.I.B.E. (1992), Arrested Development, Rage Against the Machine (1993), Beastie Boys, A Tribe Called Quest, Fu-Schnickens and Pharcyde (1994) and Cypress Hill, Coolio, Pharcyde and the Roots (1995). In later years, the festival invited Wu-Tang Clan, Snoop Dogg and Jurassic 5 before taking a hiatus. When it returned in 2005, there was a modest slate of hip-hop, but by 2006, the list grew to include Common, Kanye, Lady Sovereign, Lyrics Born and Blackalicious. In the years since, the granddaddy of alt festivals in the U.S. has hosted Lupe Fiasco, the Roots, Rhymefest, Kid Sister, K’naan, Snoop, B.o.B. and (again) Cyprus Hill. The reported roster for Lollapalooza in 2011 also features a headlining set from Eminem. Since 1999, the third big daddy American festival, California’s Coachella gathering has followed a similar path by working in college-friendly acts like Rahzel, Q-Bert, Mixmaster Mike, Kool Keith and Kid Koala into a dance- and indie-based talent lineup. It too has tapped a familiar group over the years, including: Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Gangstarr, Mos Def, Jurassic 5, KRS-One, Pharcyde, Dilated Peoples, Beastie Boys, N.E.R.D., Mr. Lif, Eyedea and Abilities, Danger Mouse, Sage Francis, Jean Grae, k-os, Black Star, Kanye, Lyrics Born, Ghostface Killah, Diplo, N.A.S.A., and in 2010, Jay-Z, Street Sweeper Social Club, Die Antwoord, Major Lazer and the Glitch Mob. This year’s Coachella will feature a thinner rap selection, including Lauryn Hill, Duck Sauce, Kanye, Nas & Damian Marley and Wiz Khalifa. Lindsay Lohan Posts Bail, Thanks Dr. Drew On Twitter

Troubled actress was charged with felony grand theft on Wednesday. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: Getty Images Hours after being arraigned on Wednesday on a felony charge of grand theft in connection with the alleged lifting of a $2,500 necklace from a Venice, California, jewelry store, troubled actress Lindsay Lohan posted $40,000 bail and was released from jail. E! News reported that Lohan’s first order of business after being sprung was to tweet a link to a photo of her with Kanye West taken at a February 4 dinner party for designer Giuseppe Zanotti. That snap was reportedly taken down a short time later, at which point she responded to a tweet of support from “Celebrity Rehab” star Dr. Drew Pinsky. Pinsky wrote , “I am mortified how @Lindsaylohan is getting attacked when she is so fragile and just establishing her sobriety. Not at all what she needs.” Lohan appeared to be grateful for the gesture, responding , “@ddrew thank you for your support. I appreciate it.” It was a tough day for the 24-year-old actress, who appeared to be getting her life back together after a stint in rehab that saved her from another jail term following a probation violation last year. L.A. Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz ruled on Wednesday to revoke Lohan’s probation in her previous misdemeanor case and set bail at $40,000 — $20,000 for the felony theft charge and $20,000 for the possible probation violation. Lohan’s lawyer entered a not-guilty plea on her behalf as the judge issued a harsh admonishment. “You’re in a different situation now that a felony has been filed against you,” Schwartz said, later adding, “If you violate the law, I will remand you and set no bail.” The judge explained that Lohan wouldn’t be able to dodge jail time and post bail as she did last year after she admittedly failed a court-mandated drug test , saying, “A felony is a different situation and you’re not entitled to bail.” The judge also firmly told the starlet, “You need to follow the laws just like everybody else,” and added, “Please, don’t push your luck. I’m telling you, things will be different.” Lohan allegedly lifted the necklace from the Venice jewelry store on January 22. The store’s owner reported the theft to the Los Angeles Police Department, which later investigated the accusation and presented evidence to the district attorney’s office last week. The actress faces up to three years in prison on the felony charge. TMZ reported on Thursday that a police report it obtained appears to show that Lohan walked out of the same store with a diamond earring a few days before the incident at the center of her current case. She tried on a pair of 18-karat-gold white-diamond earrings, removed one and continued shopping while wearing a single earring. Before leaving, a clerk reminded her about the earring and Lohan admitted her mistake and returned it. That scenario could actually help Lohan if the case goes to court because it could show that the actress did not intend to commit a crime in the necklace case. Criminal defense lawyer Jacob Glucksman told MTV News on Wednesday that the case will come down to the issue of intent, which could be hard for the prosecutor’s office to prove. One of the keys to the case will be prior acts, including similar incidents in the past in which Lohan has been accused of (but never criminally charged with) keeping or taking something that didn’t belong to her. “There’s an evidence code in California [section 1101 (b)] that relates to character evidence,” Glucksman said. “It says that character evidence cannot be used to prove a person’s propensity to commit a crime. That means they can’t say that ‘Lindsay Lohan is the type of person who would commit this crime because she’s done XYZ in the past.’ ” However, Glucksman, who is not involved in the Lohan case, added that you can use prior acts to show “motive, intent, opportunity, knowledge or modus operandi,” in which case prosecutors could use the character evidence to show that she had intent to steal this time. Judge Schwartz set a February 23 hearing in the case and TMZ reported that Lohan’s attorney could try to work out a plea deal before that date. The necklace-nicking incident is the latest case in Lohan’s extensive litany of legal run-ins. The starlet was recently released from rehab after failing a court-ordered drug test and spending 2010 in and out of courtrooms and in prison for continually failing to comply with the conditions of her probation stemming from a 2007 DUI bust. Lindsay Lohan Charged With Felony Grand Theft

‘Don’t push your luck,’ judge tells actress during arraignment for allegedly stealing a necklace. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with additional reporting by Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan at her arraignment in Los Angeles on Wednesday Photo: Mario Anzuoni-Pool/ Getty Images Lindsay Lohan was arraigned Wednesday (February 9) on a felony charge related to her recent jewelry theft case, and the presiding judge made it clear that he wants the troubled starlet to stay straight. Lohan arrived in court in a clingy white minidress, big black shades and hair in a blond ponytail with a necklace tucked into her collar. In the courtroom, the actress sat quietly next to her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, who said Lohan’s probation officer maintained she has been “a good probationer.” Ultimately, the judge decided to revoke her probation in her previous misdemeanor case and set bail at $20,000. At the close of the minutes-long arraignment, Judge Keith Schwartz addressed Lohan directly and advised her that her current circumstance is more serious than her previous legal scrapes. “You’re in a different situation now that a felony has been filed against you,” Schwartz said, later adding that, “If you violate the law, I will remand you and set no bail.” The judge explained that Lohan wouldn’t be able to dodge jail time and post bail as she did last year after she admittedly failed a court-mandated drug test , saying, “A felony is a different situation and you’re not entitled to bail.” The judge also firmly told the starlet, “You need to follow the laws just like everybody else,” and added, “Please, don’t push your luck. I’m telling you, things will be different.” Lohan allegedly lifted a $2,500 necklace from a Venice, California, jewelry store on January 22. The owner reported the theft to the Los Angeles Police Department, which later investigated the accusation and presented evidence to the District Attorney’s office last week. The actress has been officially charged with one count of felony grand theft and faces up to three years in prison. The case is unusual for a number of reasons, according to criminal defense lawyer Jacob Glucksman, who used to be a deputy district attorney in the Los Angeles County Prosecutors office. “It does seem odd to me,” Glucksman told MTV News on Wednesday afternoon a short time before Lohan’s arraignment. “Most theft cases are: You go into a store and hide something in your bag and leave or take it from a person. Something like this is fairly rare and begs the questions: Why didn’t the store just go to Lindsay’s people and not the cops?” Glucksman said the case will come down to the issue of intent, which could be hard for the prosecutor’s office to prove. One of the keys to the case will be prior acts, including similar incidents in the past in which Lohan has been accused (but never criminally charged) with keeping or taking something that didn’t belong to her. “There’s an evidence code in California [section 1101 (b)] that relates to character evidence,” he said. “It says that character evidence cannot be used to prove a person’s propensity to commit a crime. That means they can’t say that ‘Lindsay Lohan is the type of person who would commit this crime because she’s done XYZ in the past.’ ” However, Glucksman, who is not involved in the Lohan case, added, you can use prior acts to show “motive, intent, opportunity, knowledge or modus operandi,” in which case prosecutors could use the character evidence to show that she had intent to steal this time. “You would say, ‘In the past, someone has given her a coat, a watch, trinkets … and they haven’t asked for it back,’ and because she had the knowledge and intent to keep it, that’s what she did this time too.” Lohan does not have to have been charged with crimes in the prior acts in order for them to be brought up in court, but a judge could seek to limit such evidence if he or she thought it would confuse or mislead jurors and possibly lead them to convict Lohan for a past crime rather than the one that led to her charging. Pradeep Manukonda Ordered to Quit Stalking Mark Zuckerberg

Facebook stalking is one thing. We’ve all done it, am I right guys? Hello? Okay then. Well, it’s better than literal stalking, i.e. lurking at someone’s house like a bona fide nut job. We’re talking to you, Pradeep Manukonda. Creep. Mark Zuckerberg obtained a restraining order against that man, who at first was badgering the Facebook CEO on his very site, then took it beyond that. Manukonda is accused of leaving flowers and a handwritten note at his home, walking up to said home, and showing up at several Facebook offices looking for him . According to the handwritten note and Facebook wall posts, Manukonda consistently referenced some problem that he wanted Mark Zuckerberg to help him with. Probably couldn’t figure out the privacy settings – those are beyond confusing. “Thank you for your time and attention towards my problem,” the note reads. “I owe my entire life to your service, please help me, I am ready to die for you.” A judge told Manukonda to stay at least 300 yards away from Zuckerberg, his sister and his girlfriend. In an interview, Manukonda apologized for his behavior. “I’m a peaceful guy … I’m sorry he thought I was trying to harm him,” he said. Consider yourself unfriended, Pradeep.
