Monterey, California Switching to Sea As Primary Water Source

Photo via foxypar4 In the face of an increasing water shortage, last November state regulators told Monterey County to curb its withdrawals from the Carmel River, the current main water source, by 70% by 2016. With no where else to turn for water, the county is turning its eyes to the ocean, and launching an enormous desalination project to provide water to about 100,000 customers. It’s controversial, but some argue desalination is the only choice the penninsula has for finding water outside of the Carmel River. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Southern California’s Mountain Lions Become International Diplomats

Photo via angel_malachite A decade-long study of Southern California mountain lions by The Nature Conservancy has yielded a new first. A young lion that goes by the handle M53 found a way to cross a human-made barrier that could have international consequences. When M53 managed to successfully cross the US-Mexico boarder, he inadvertently became somewhat of a diplomat for other lions, and is helping scientists at The Nature Conservancy protect the wildlife corridors the animals need to survive. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Lindsay Lohan Due in Court For Probation Hearing

The troubled actress could be headed to jail if judge rules against her on Tuesday. By Gil Kaufman Lindsay Lohan Photo: Scott Wintrow/ Getty Images Lindsay Lohan is due in court on Tuesday (July 6) for a probation revocation hearing that could land the once promising actress in jail again. According to The Associated Press, Lohan will appear before Judge Marsha Revel in a Beverly Hills, California, courtroom following the revocation of her probation in May, after she missed a scheduled hearing. The actress, who was traveling overseas at the time for the Cannes Film Festival, blamed her absence on a lost (or stolen) passport. While Lohan’s skipped court appearances and failure to comply with all of the terms of the sentence stemming from her 2007 DUI case have reportedly irritated the judge in the case, it’s possible the prosecutor could seek remedies other than additional jail time for the troubled 24-year-old starlet . The AP reported that Lohan could either be allowed to remain free, in which case she will likely begin work on her much-discussed biopic of porn star Linda Lovelace . Alternately, she could be ordered to jail, in which case she would be taken into custody immediately. It was not clear at press time what her potential sentence might be. Lohan was sentenced to three years probation in 2007 after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor counts of being under the influence of cocaine and no contest to two counts of driving with a blood-alcohol level above 0.08 percent and one count of reckless driving. The plea followed two widely reported arrests earlier that year. She spent a total of 84 minutes in jail in that case. Her probation was extended by a year in October after she failed to fully complete court-mandated alcohol-education classes. Lohan is currently sporting an alcohol-monitoring anklet Judge Revel ordered her to wear in May after she missed a court date due to the passport snafu; Revel also scheduled Tuesday’s hearing at that time to determine whether Lohan had violated her probation. TMZ reported that Lohan, in anticipation of Tuesday’s hearing, spent part of her Fourth of July weekend in alcohol-education classes in an effort to meet her class requirements. Lohan’s SCRAM bracelet was set off after the “Mean Girls” actress attended an MTV Movie Awards afterparty, which in turn prompted Revel issue a warrant for Lohan’s arrest and double her bail to $200,000 . But Lohan’s attorney downplayed the incident, saying her. client had not had a drink . Do you think this should be the last chance for Lindsay Lohan? Share your thoughts in the comments. Virgin America’s ‘Air Drake’ Takes Flight

Plane named after the rapper flies from Los Angeles to Toronto with Drake, Arnold Schwarzenegger and more onboard.Josh Wigler By Josh Wigler Drake poses in front of “Air Drake” at Toronto Pearson International Airport Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images Drake has not only established himself as a rising star in the music industry; he’s also become a rising star in a very literal sense. On Tuesday, Virgin America marked its first international destination from Los Angeles to Toronto with a party aboard Air Drake, an Airbus A320 named after the Canadian rapper. According to Billboard.com , Drake attended the aerial party alongside Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. The flight made a stop in San Francisco to pick up more passengers, including dancer Cheryl Burke and actors Gregory Smith and Gilles Marini. On landing in Toronto, Drake and his fellow passengers celebrated with a red-carpet party on the airport tarmac. “Flying on ‘Air Drake’ is truly humbling,” the recording artist and actor said of the experience. “I’m truly honored to have a plane named after me.” The first flight of Air Drake comes less than a month after his debut, Thank Me Later, dropped on June 15, selling more than 400,000 records in its first week and reaching #1 on the Billboard albums chart. In late June, Drake was the subject of an MTV documentary titled “Drake: Better Than Good Enough,” in which the up-and-coming rapper pulled the curtain back to reveal key details about his personal life. “I have always been hesitant to share the details of my life with the world, but for the first time, I am comfortable and confident that you will love this story,” Drake said of the documentary in June. If you had a plane named after you, where would you fly? Let us know in the comments! Policing Free Speech / Political Spying: ACLU Review

Welcome to the surveillance society That’s what the American Civil Liberties Union concluded Tuesday with a report chronicling government spying and the detention of groups and individuals “for doing little more than peacefully exercising their First Amendment rights.” The report, Policing Free Speech: Police Surveillance and Obstruction of First Amendment-Protected Activity (.pdf), http://www.aclu.org/files/assets/Spyfiles_2_0.pdf surveys news accounts and studies of questionable snooping and arrests in 33 states and the District of Columbia over the past decade. The survey provides an outline of, and links to, dozens of examples of Cold War-era snooping in the modern age. “Our review of these practices has found that Americans have been put under surveillance or harassed by the police just for deciding to organize, march, protest, espouse unusual viewpoints and engage in normal, innocuous behaviors such as writing notes or taking photographs in public,” Michael German, an ACLU attorney and former Federal Bureau of Investigation agent, said in a statement. Here are a few examples: At a California State University, Fresno lecture on veganism, six of the 60 in attendance were undercover officers from the local and campus police. The Oakland Police Department in California had infiltrated a police-brutality demonstration, and its undercover officers selected “the route of the march.” A vegetarian activist in Georgia was arrested for jotting down the license plate of a Department of Homeland Security agent who was snapping photos of a protest outside a Honey Baked Ham store. A Joint Terrorism Task Force in Illinois went on a three-day manhunt in Chicago searching for a Muslim man for his suspicious activity of using a hand counter on a bus. As it turned out, the man was counting his daily prayers. A Kentucky minister was detained at Canadian border trying to enter the United States because he had purchased copies of the Koran on the internet following the 2001 terror attacks. A New York, Muslim-American student journalist was detained for taking pictures of Old Glory outside a Veterans Affairs building as part of a class project. The authorities deleted the pictures before releasing her an hour later. added by: Stoneyroad

Tibetans Underwent Fastest Evolution Seen in Humans

“Life at high altitudes forced ancient Tibetans to undergo the fastest evolution ever seen in humans, according to a new study. The most rapid genetic change showed up in the EPAS1 gene, which helps regulate the body's response to a low-oxygen environment. One version, called an allele, of the EPAS1 gene changed in frequency from showing up in 9 percent of the Han Chinese to 87 percent of Tibetans. Such genetic changes suggest Tibetan ancestors split off from the Han Chinese population about 2,750 years ago, researchers say. But only those most evolutionarily suited for life at high altitudes survived when they moved to the Tibetan Plateau. “It took only a few hundred generations to change the allele frequency, which can only happen if a lot of people have died,” said Rasmus Nielsen, an evolutionary biologist at the University of California at Berkeley. “In that sense, it must have had a strong effect on fitness.” The Tibetan example of human evolution beats the previous record holders in northern Europe, who evolved lactose tolerance to digest the milk sugar lactose over the course of about 7,500 years.” More at link! http://www.livescience.com/health/Tibetans-underwent-fastest-evolution-seen-in-h… added by: DeliaTheArtist

V.A. Hospital May Have Infected 1,812 Veterans with HIV

VA hospital may have infected 1,800 veterans with HIV By the CNN Wire Staff June 30, 2010 1:44 a.m. EDT (CNN) — A Missouri VA hospital is under fire because it may have exposed more than 1,800 veterans to dangerous viruses like hepatitis and HIV. John Cochran VA Medical Center in St. Louis has recently mailed letters to 1,812 veterans telling them they could contract hepatitis B, hepatitis C and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) after visiting the medical center for dental work, said Rep. Russ Carnahan. Carnahan said Tuesday he is calling for a investigation into the issue and has sent a letter to President Obama about it. “This is absolutely unacceptable,” said Carnahan, a Democrat from Missouri. “No veteran who has served and risked their life for this great nation should have to worry about their personal safety when receiving much needed healthcare services from a Veterans Administration hospital.” The issue stems from a failure to clean dental instruments properly, the hospital told CNN affiliate KSDK. KSDK: VA dental patients at risk of infection Dr. Gina Michael, the association chief of staff at the hospital, told the affiliate that some dental technicians broke protocol by handwashing tools before putting them in cleaning machines. The instruments were supposed to only be put in the cleaning machines, Michael said. The handwashing started in February 2009 and went on until March of this year, the hospital told KSDK. The hospital has set up a special clinic and education centers to help patients who may have been infected. However, Carnahan said he feels more should be done and those responsible should be disciplined. “I can only imagine the horror and anger our veterans must be feeling after receiving this letter,” Carnahan said. “They have every right to be angry. So am I.” This is not the first time this year a hospital has been in hot water for not following proper procedures. In June, Palomar Hospital in San Diego, California, has sent certified letters to 3,400 patients who underwent colonoscopy and other similar procedures, informing the patients that there may be a potential of infection from items used and reused in the procedures. S. 3480 – Liebermans Call To Silence the People…Shutting Down The Internet In "Emergency" (Kill Bill/Kill Switch)

As a network engineer I find it troubling that the government seeks to label the internet as a catalyst for any emergency on a catastrophic basis. The thought that congress and the senate is constantly seeking a means to control, monitor, and force their whims on the internet are a constant concern to me and my fellow engineers. To be clear, I want everyone to know that we who work for large scale ISP’s have no desire or wish to aid the government in doing this. On the contrary, we recognize how damaging such efforts would be not only to the industry, but to each and every single one of the millions of end users. As such, I feel it my responsibility to inform the American people of any act of legislation that will force upon them any of the above described actions (monitoring, regulating, controlling, and even disabling). I thought things were bad when President Obama furthered Bush’s attempts at internet monitoring via an executive order that described project Einstein. This order coupled with several acts of legislation already had me upset over the situati… http://www.peacefreedomprosperity.com/?p=3615 added by: shanklinmike
