‘It was an epic performance of ‘Rehab,’ Mark Burnett, the award show’s executive producer, says. By Rob Markman Amy Winehouse performs at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images The 2007 MTV Movie Awards show was all the way live, and the late Amy Winehouse, who was found dead in her London home on Saturday, provided one of the show’s many highlights with a spectacular performance of her hit single “Rehab.” Click for photos of Amy Winehouse’s life and career. Introduced by actor Bruce Willis, Winehouse took the stage and thrilled the Hollywood crowd with her soulful vocal runs of true-to-life lyrics. But what turned out to be one of the singer’s more memorable performances almost wasn’t. The 2007 ceremony marked the first time that MTV’s Movie Awards aired live, and the unpredictable Winehouse almost threw things out of whack. Sadly, the song “Rehab” was all too real for the rising Brit star, who began canceling shows during her ascent up the charts. Her team cited “health issues,” while rumors of substance abuse problems became inescapable. Still, Winehouse quickly became a fan favorite, and her performance at the Movie Awards proved to be a big draw. After showing up late for her rehearsal, which took place the night before the live show, the British singer rendezvoused off to Las Vegas for a party with photographer David LaChapelle. MTV protested, but still Winehouse made way for the Strip less than 12 hours before she was needed back in California to perform. Things shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise considering the numerous bumps MTV experienced when taping her for another show, “45th at Night,” earlier that year. “Just about every song, she stopped. She walked offstage,” Garrett English, MTV executive in charge of production at the time, said. “It was difficult for her to work all the way through the set. Knowing that she was going to be on the Movie Awards in a true live environment was a little bit concerning.” “We had to let her go, stay in touch and hope for the best,” MTV talent executive Robin Katz said. The show’s producers didn’t hear from Winehouse’s camp until an hour before showtime, when they received a text that confirmed the singer had returned from Sin City and was heading to the Gibson Amphitheater in Universal City, California, where the ceremony was taking place. Despite the scare, once Amy took the stage, she performed as only Amy could. She hit her mark, and the star-studded crowd loved it. “It was an epic performance of ‘Rehab,’ ” Mark Burnett, the awards show’s executive producer, said. “Edgy, as Amy always is, and it really fits the vibe of MTV.” Amy Winehouse was found dead Saturday at the age of 27, and despite all of her troubles, she still remained a favorite among fans and music contemporaries alike. New single started life as an hour-long jam session, Anthony Kiedis tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Anthony Kiedis Photo: MTV News On Friday, the Red Hot Chili Peppers officially ended their hiatus with the premiere of “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie,” the first single from their upcoming I’m With You album. About a month before the premiere of “Maggie,” MTV News sat down with RHCP’s Anthony Kiedis and Josh Klinghoffer in Venice, California, to talk about the band’s new album (and the lengthy break that preceded it). We’ll be rolling out more of the interview as we get closer to I’m With You ‘s August 30 release date, but we’ve already given fans a taste of what they can expect, when Kiedis and Klinghoffer explained the genesis of the album’s title. And now, with “Maggie” officially out of the box, we figured it would be time to pull the curtain back on a second portion of the chat, in which Kiedis revealed the origins of the song itself — origins that began with an hour-long jam session and exactly one classic bass line. “When I first heard [‘Maggie’], I didn’t know it would be a single. [But] I knew that I loved the jam, ” Kiedis explained. “My first recording of that, I don’t think it had many vocals on it. It was kind of mostly instrumental, about an hour long. Flea brought it in as a very specific exercise to write a classic bass line. He woke up, had his tea, sat down: ‘I’m going to write a classic bass line. You can’t stop me.’ Played his bass line until he felt it was cooked into a classic, brought it to us and said, ‘This is Classic Number One.’ On a good day, you just know if there’s music to wrestle with and get with, and it was one of those moments.” So Kiedis sat down and listened to the track and was immediately struck by the propulsive groove Flea had laid down. And things just took off from there, with Klinghoffer adding a winging guitar line and drummer Chad Smith providing a loose, limber backbeat. But even if things were taking shape, Kiedis said he never thought “Maggie” would be anything more than a B-side. If that. “I took it home and it felt so fun to listen to at length that I literally left it on in my driveway, opened the door and danced with the tree next to me for quite a while,” he said. “I had no idea that it would even be a song, I just thought, ‘Oh, this is a great dance track. Let’s put it on as a B-side, [an] hour long.’ And then, as fate would have it, people heard it, and they were like, ‘Oh, that’s your best thing right there. That’s your best thing.’ ” And so, eventually, “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie” made the leap from jam to official first single. And now that it’s out there, Kiedis knows he’s going asked plenty of times just who this Maggie is. Unfortunately, he’s not about to reveal his inspirations. “It’s just a collection of memories and people along the way that had maybe left my consciousness until I heard that music, and then they kind of came dancing back into my consciousness, and out the old pen onto the paper,” he smiled. “Names have been changed to protect the innocent. Although there is a Maggie, I realized later. There’s two Maggies, actually.” What do you think of the Chili Peppers’ new song? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Red Hot Chili Peppers

‘It really hurts us,’ C-Smoove says on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway “RapFix Live” with Cali Swag District Photo: MTV News Since the shooting death of Cali Swag District’s Mante “M-Bone” Talbert in May, rumors have swirled while his loved ones search for answers. Rumblings of jealous rivals and gang activity have surfaced, but what bothers CSD the most is a rumor that suggests the group’s surviving members had something to do with Bone’s death. “[There’s] nothing we can do about the rumors,” Yung said on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” “We can talk like we’re talking right now because it ain’t gonna change anything, but once it comes to the light, then we can breathe.” C-Smoove called the setup rumor “crazy.” “We made it together. We’ve been knowing that dude since we were kids,” he said. “It really hurts us and our label and the team. How could you believe something like that when we did everything together?” The setup theory is particularly baffling for the group, who emerged as stars from their Inglewood, California, neighborhood thanks to their 2010 hit single “Teach Me How to Dougie.” “We succeeded together, we got out the ‘Wood together. We had fun all the time, everything we did was to have fun because that’s what we do,” Smoove said. “We wanted to have fun and give the people what they wanted. And for people to think something like that, it’s just mind-boggling. How could you figure?” Yung added: “It’s crazy. We think about that all the time, like, how could you even think something like that? We’re family, we’re brothers. So we want the rumors to just stop.” Sound off about the M-Bone rumors in the comments below. MTV News looks back on our interview with the all-star cast and director as the South Central L.A. tale was hitting theaters 20 years ago. By Rob Markman Ice Cube in “Boyz N The Hood” Photo: Columbia Pictures In a 1991 interview with MTV News to promote the just-released “Boyz N the Hood,” Laurence Fishburne seemed to know what kind of impact the coming-of-age story would have. “John Singleton has made a classic movie,” the actor said. Twenty years later, fans are still singing its praises. This past Tuesday, “Boyz N the Hood” celebrated its 20-year anniversary , and on July 19, the film will be re-released in Blu-ray format. The film, starring Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut and Laurence Fishburne, is set in South Central, Los Angeles, a California neighborhood notorious for gang violence. At the center of the film is Tre Styles (Gooding Jr.), who tries to balance his father’s (Fishburne) life lessons with the harsh realities of the ‘hood in which he lived. Then there are half-brothers Doughboy (Cube) and Ricky Baker (Chestnut), two characters who couldn’t be more different. Doughboy, a stone-cold gangster, has street respect but very few prospects. His brother Ricky, however, is a young father and a star high school football player fielding sports scholarships from multiple colleges. In the end, Ricky’s bright future is brought to a dark close when he’s gunned down in an alleyway. “Well, this is the film that I initially went to film school to make,” director Singleton explained to MTV News in the same 1991 interview, days after the film hit theaters. “I had never seen films that reflected where I was coming from growing up in L.A.” “There are so many messages in the film, but if they go and take one message away, it’s to keep the love in the family. As long as the love is circulating around, it’ll be OK,” Gooding Jr. said. “It’s a new kind of perspective,” Fishburne added. Even Cube, who made his Hollywood debut in “Boyz N the Hood,” knew back then that the movie would be impactful. “I think we got a real good film. Just to show black people on the screen being people and not just images, as far as not a sports player or a hat and a gun,” he said. “You fall in love with these characters, and it’s real deep when something happens to them.” And that’s why 20 years later, we’re still watching.
