The 9 Most Scathing Critical Responses to Chelsea Handler’s VMA Performance

Note to future Video Music Award hosts: Television critics are generally not fans of herpes humor, pre-taped sketches parodying sexual harassment, overtly sexual come-ons, one-liners about accidental pregnancies, casual racism, or any kind of material about your promiscuity and/or alcoholism — at least if you’re a female comedian. Take Movieline’s word for it, because Chelsea Handler learned the hard way. Read on for nine criticisms — from fair to downright hateful — of the first lady VMA host in sixteen years.

True Lies Will Be a TV Series

A few years after a TV adaptation of Mr. and Mrs. Smith tanked at the pilot stage, Hollywood is giving True Lies a small-screen spin (even though the “married people with guns” genre may be rather crowded after Undercovers premieres). James Cameron will produce the series adaptation of the Arnold Schwarzenegger/Jamie Lee Curtis action comedy, and the project is currently out to networks. Don’t blow this golden opportunity, Tom Arnold ! [ Deadline ]

James Cameron Discusses Sending 3-D Cameras (And People) To Mars

‘I want to make films about this and get people excited about [space] exploration,’ the ‘Avatar’ director says. By Kara Warner James Cameron Photo: MTV News For Oscar-winning director James Cameron, whose box-office clout at this point seems unmatchable, making mega-blockbusters like “Avatar” and “Titanic” might not be enough. So next year, Cameron is taking his filmmaking expertise to the final frontier. In April, it was announced that Cameron had partnered with NASA to help build a 3-D camera mounted atop the Mars rover Curiosity for a mission planned for launch next year. When MTV News caught up with the filmmaker, we asked if, in addition to sending 3-D cameras to Mars, he’s thinking about how to send humans there. “Oh, yeah, I’ve been thinking about the issues of sending human beings to Mars for a long time,” he admitted during a press day for the re-release of “Avatar.” “I started 11 years ago working on a Mars project that led me to doing a lot of research, meeting a lot of people at NASA, getting involved with people, and then at a certain point, a couple years ago, they said, ‘Wait a minute, this guy knows a lot about Mars, he knows a lot about 3-D cameras, zoom lenses, motion photography, all the things we’re incorporating into this new camera system. Why don’t we bring him in?’ ” Cameron said one thing led to another, and suddenly, a partnership was born. “I’m actually on the team developing the new camera for the Mars Science Laboratory, which launches next year,” he said, adding that if all goes well, we could see 3-D photos of the red planet in the very near future. “Theoretically, we will have a motion-image stereoscopic camera on the surface of Mars in 2011, and it will be making the first 3-D movie on Mars — well, it’s not a movie, but we’ll be taking 3-D shots.” As for humans making the trip, Cameron added that it will require a couple of things — namely, a shift in our national interest. “The public has to want it — that’s number one — because it has to be paid for. I think commercial, new, lean enterprises like [PayPal co-founder] Elon Musk’s company SpaceX , which is going to be creating human transportation to the space station. They’re a good candidate to build the systems that could get us to Mars, for example,” he said. “But it still requires the national will, and right now, that national will, quite frankly, isn’t up to the task. People don’t care about it enough, which is why I want to make films about this and get people excited about exploration.” Cameron ended his thoughts with a question for the public: “Frankly, what would you rather spend your money on: pointless wars in the Middle East to support our oil addiction or going to another planet?” What do you think about Cameron’s involvement with NASA and space exploration? Here are pictures of Cameron Diaz that could really be pictures of anyone because they are so fucking blurry. James Cameron Wants To Capture ‘Avatar’ Sequel Underwater

Director is eager to film in the deep, though it won’t be the same as the diving he does for pleasure. By Kara Warner “Avatar” Photo: 20th Century Fox The history-making success of James Cameron’s “Avatar” has not only quashed pre-release grumblings about the production’s bloated budget, but turned the conversation toward the two confirmed sequels that don’t exactly sound like low-budget affairs either. With the mega-blockbuster’s re-release approaching, details about the next two films have started to trickle out via the maestro himself, specifically Cameron’s hints that the second film will involve the oceans of Pandora . Given his water-related filmmaking experience (see “Titanic” and “The Abyss”), as well as his fondness for diving as a hobby, MTV News recently asked Cameron if he’ll shoot sequences underwater. “I think what we should do there is — because we’ll have to have characters that are in and under the water — is that we should actually capture them underwater,” Cameron explained. “It’s not the same as going diving, but I like to keep my diving, which I do for pleasure, separate from work.” He added that diving for work is not as much fun. “Diving for shooting a movie is work,” he said. “Diving for exploration is a gas. I like to keep my peas and carrots separate.” Cameron previously described the ocean on Pandora as “equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative” as the setting of the first film, but that “it just won’t be a rain forest.” Regarding the re-release of the film and the extra nine minutes that will be added, the Oscar-winner said he’ll also be adding footage to the film’s eventual special edition DVD. “We’re doing a longer version for the DVD that is 16 to 17 minutes longer,” he said, “but you’ll have the choice: You can watch [the nine-minutes-longer version] or you can watch the original if you want to.” Are you excited about the sequels and seeing the oceans of Pandora? Talk about it in the comments! Check out everything we’ve got on “Avatar.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Will James Cameron’s Next Film Star the Black Eyed Peas?

As we all know, James Cameron’s best work is not Aliens, Avatar , or Titanic , but instead his one contribution to music video history: Martini Ranch’s “Reach” video, a deliciously absurd parable about female bodybuilders and Kathryn Bigelow’s doability in a cowgirl outfit . Alas, Cameron hasn’t directed a music video since, although according to will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas, the director is going to put off Avatar 2 to direct their concert film. Um what?
