If you wanted to remain completely spoiler-free going into this summer’s modest little art pic The Avengers , too bad! Disney has gone ahead and ruined the surprise. So, fine. Captain America apparently does not perish at the end of The Avengers , but will indeed live on to deal with his personal issues in Captain America 2 , due to hit theaters on April 14, 2014. Find the official word and a new image after the jump. I kid. Of course Captain America lives through The Avengers ! How else will he and the rest of his teammates cash in on the endless stream of superhero sequels to follow? From Disney: “The Walt Disney Studios has announced a release date for Marvel Studios’ sequel to the blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger on April 4, 2014. The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.” I mean, if it gives us more Chris Evans crouching in tight leather getups, let the sequels never end.
In addition to announcing their Tribeca closing night bow , Marvel recently unveiled the full track listing for their upcoming Avengers companion album, comprised of “music from and inspired by” the May 4 superhero flick. Among the hot bands of today yesterday contributing future hits to the soundtrack? Soundgarden! Papa Roach! Bush! And the kicker: Evanescence. Now, I know these major recording artists have been around since their respective heydays in the ’90s and ’00s, but really, Avengers ? I haven’t had this kind of knee-jerk reaction to a movie soundtrack since I revisited the abomination that was the soundtrack to 1998’s Godzilla . Well, who am I kidding. I was guilty of buying that awful Godzilla album back in my misguided youth. (From BMG! It was too easy! FORGIVE ME !) Even then I knew it was terrible, and that was in the actual ’90s. I’d love to hear Joss Whedon ‘s explanation for the assemblage of rock bands and millennial metal outfits gathered here. (A standalone score will also be released with Alan Silvestri’s music from the film.) Is there a throwback sentiment at work in this selection, a parallel musical commentary on pop culture’s constant re-imagining and resuscitation of things from the past, bands we loved when we were kids? Is it simply that the ’90s are the new ’80s, or that Whedon listened to a lot of Canadian rock while making Iron Man and the Hulk and Thor and Captain America and Black Widow — oh, and you too, Hawkeye — tangle with evil spaceships ? (Fourth theory: Whedon is paying homage to the difficulties of keeping a band/team of superheroes together by bringing reunited/re-jiggered line-ups like Bush and Soundgarden onboard in a stroke of brilliant thematic confluence. Who else would know better how hard it is to balance egos and personalities for the greater good?) Now, it’s possible that “Live to Rise” by Soundgarden may put them back on the map, or that Evanescence’s “A New Way to Bleed” will do for The Avengers what that one other Evanescence song did for the Elektra soundtrack. Still, I call no fairsies: International retailers get a bonus track by Kasabian. The more that I stare at this track list, the more I’m convinced it’s just another way to bring a certain demographic in to see The Avengers . Whedon and Marvel already have the geek quotient hooked, and they’ll get a mainstream audience by default. Will this bring the former grunge girls and boys and current emo-rock listeners in droves? The Avengers is in theaters May 4; the Avengers Assemble -inspired album will be available May 1. And, look: If you can convince me that any of these above bands are actually worth listening to these days, my ears are open. [via @Avengers ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . In ‘Talk Nerdy,’ experts agree with Joss Whedon’s claim that Hulk is the most difficult Avenger to get right. By Josh Wigler The Hulk in “Marvel’s The Avengers” Photo: Marvel Studios Bruce Banner has a tendency to get angry. And despite what he says, you really should like him when he gets angry — because if you don’t, well, you’re going to have a lot of problems with ” The Avengers .” Joss Whedon, the man bringing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to the big screen, confessed in a recent interview that Banner’s irritable alter ego, the Hulk, is easily the most challenging Avenger to get right. He might not be wrong, considering that it’s taken three different actors to play the big green meanie on the big screen — Eric Bana in 2003’s “Hulk,” Ed Norton in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” and, soon, Mark Ruffalo in “The Avengers.” And Whedon’s assertion certainly has the support of some of the Web’s top comic book and movie commentators. “Without a doubt, I think Hulk is the hardest ‘Avengers’ character to translate to the big screen,” MTV Geek ‘s Valerie Gallaher told MTV News about her “Avengers” character concerns. “Using CGI to create a character in a live-action film will end up looking like one big cartoon if not done right.” “Both Joss Whedon and Mark Ruffalo have a lot of pressure to give Bruce Banner and the Hulk two distinctive yet relatable characters,” agreed Steve Sunu of Comic Book Resources . “Only time will tell if ‘The Avengers’ is an improvement for Hulk over ‘The Incredible Hulk.’ ” Of course, just because a challenge exists doesn’t mean it’s insurmountable. NextMovie ‘s Kevin Polowy, who also agrees that Hulk presents Whedon’s biggest challenge, has faith in the director’s ability to do the Jade Giant justice. “I do have faith that if anyone can get it done, it’s Joss Whedon,” he said. “But compared to proven screen figures like Iron Man, Captain America and Thor, Hulk is far and away the trickiest pony in the bunch.” Not everyone is so concerned about Hulk. Caleb Goellner with Comics Alliance doesn’t see the incredible menace as the most problematic character in “The Avengers”; like me, he assigns that role to the not-super-deadly duo of Black Widow and Hawkeye. “They’re going to be the hardest to portray,” he said. “Black Widow got some exposure in ‘Iron Man 2’ and Hawkeye was teased in ‘Thor,’ but the ‘master assassins’ are at a disadvantage compared to Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and the Hulk. Their backstories will require considerable streamlining for them to make sense in this Marvel movieverse, so it will be interesting to see how much Joss Whedon and company will be able to fit in to an already packed movie. “I suggest making them husband and wife, because that would be the cutest damn thing,” Goellner added. Totally agreed, Caleb. Which Avengers are you most worried about? Watch Talk Nerdy to see what we think, and let us know what you think in the comments section! “Smokin’” Joe Carnahan ( Narc , Smokin’ Aces , The A-Team ) has endured his fair share of ill-fated projects and setbacks, but his passion project Killing Pablo remains a priority. And while the fate of White Jazz remains opaque, Carnahan shared optimism for his long-gestating Pablo Escobar biopic while promoting his existential survival pic The Grey last weekend in Los Angeles. If all goes well and the Liam Neeson-led The Grey takes off upon release later this month, he says he hopes to make Pablo his next project. The characteristically candid Carnahan, who recently dropped out of the director’s chair on Umbra , expressed hope that a successful debut for The Grey will allow him to finally bring Killing Pablo to the screen after years of research. “I feel like Pablo ’s the undernourished orphan that I’ve been looking after for years,” he said. “I’ve got to get this kid a meal. Yes, [ Killing Pablo ] would be, in a perfect world, the film that I’d want to make next. I still think it’s the best script I’ve written and I see these other kinds of things ramping up, and I just can’t get beat by these other movies.” Adapted from Mark Bowden’s book of the same name, Killing Pablo chronicles the efforts of the United States and Colombian governments to wage war against drug lord Escobar, who was killed by Colombian forces in 1993. Escobar’s legend, and a lingering fascination with his death, kept Carnahan fixated on making the film even through years of development hell that saw his creative struggle mirrored on HBO’s Entourage . “As much as The Grey is about attrition and going out and earning it, you know, I’ve been to Colombia three times, Medellin and Bogotá, I’ve done all this research,” Carnahan said. “I think what kind of crystallized it for me is I went to Los Olivos where he was killed, in Medellin, which is kind of a very modest middle-class neighborhood, and I was interviewing this 78-year-old man through an interpreter.” “I was talking to him, because Pablo was killed December 2, 1993,” he continued. “I said to him, ‘Can you tell me about that day?’ Because I’d gone up on the roof where he was killed and it was very undramatic, where he wound up dying; it was like a terra cotta box that he died in. And the guy said to me, and I’ll never forget this: ‘The day it happened I thought it was an early winter thunderstorm,’ because the level of gunfire was so constant he could not discern individual shots. And I thought, ‘Fuck me, I’ve got to make this movie.’” As for Carnahan’s career, which has traversed a range of projects from the modest, well-received Narc to the high-octane Smokin’ Aces , the big-budgeted A-Team , the cop drama Pride and Glory (which he co-wrote) and the sci-fi pic The Fourth Kind (which he produced), he sees no need to take a turn for the serious, necessarily, despite the philosophical and even metaphysical themes in the otherwise action-oriented The Grey . Doing the mainstream studio flick, The A-Team , for example, allowed Carnahan to scratch a certain itch while giving him the platform to make more personal films like The Grey , which he’s called his best film to date. “I realized, especially after A-Team , ‘Wait a minute — am I being viewed as a schmuck?’” he recalled. “Because my reasons for doing A-Team … there were a number of reasons, not the least was which I couldn’t make this or White Jazz or Killing Pablo . I couldn’t make those movies. And after Mission Impossible III , which again I left before I was fired, I had unfinished business. With The A-Team it was like, ‘Alright I’m going to do a big popcorn movie and see how that feels.’” If all goes well Pablo might finally come to fruition, but in the meantime Carnahan’s currently at work on a project at Fox called Continue , which the filmmaker describes as “ Groundhog Day as an action movie.” “As much as I love Antonioni films, I love the Three Stooges,” he explained. “I think [ Continue ] is funny as shit. It’s completely, from DNA to bone structure, different from The Grey but that doesn’t mean it’s something I wouldn’t do because now [I’ve] got to make serious films. I think I made this film to kind of prove to myself and whatever people are going to hire me in the future and the public at large that there’s a lot of different things I can do. If I can do a romantic comedy with women, that’s Everest to me.” The Grey is in theaters January 27. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
We can all agree that Lindsay Lohan is in dire need of a comeback, and this might just do it — well, it’ll certainly help: Deadline reports that the 25-year-old starlet is in talks to play screen icon Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime’s biographical romance Elizabeth & Richard: A Love Story . The pic will chronicle the legendary relationship between Taylor and Richard Burton ; no word yet on who’ll play Dick to Lohan’s Liz, which means it’s a perfect time to play a round of Fantasy Casting! I’ll start by throwing a few names out there: – Ed Westwick, who’s vaguely got a young Burton thing going on in his face, but is probably too young to play Burton, who was 7 years Taylor’s senior… – Armie Hammer, because why not? – Sebastian Stan, the underrated sidekick to Chris Evans’ Captain America and, coincidentally, another Gossip Girl alum… mostly because I’m intrigued by the thought of him setting off sparks onscreen with Lohan. Then again, I’d also vote to wait for Martin Scorsese’s take on Dick ‘n’ Liz , based on Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger’s Furious Love … Have any better suggestions? Nicki ranks fourth overall on Google list, trailing only ‘Angry Birds,’ ‘Black Swan’ and ‘Playboy Bunny.’ By James Montgomery Nicki Minaj Photo: Christopher Polk/ AMA2010/ Getty Images Given that over the past year she’s rocked outfits like this — and this and this — it shouldn’t really come as a surprise to learn that Nicki Minaj is the year’s most-searched celebrity Halloween costume, according to Google. Minaj bested the likes of Charlie Sheen, Captain America, Smurfette (Katy Perry’s gonna be pissed!) and, oddly enough, Wilfred , the titular star of F/X’s oddball comedy, on the list . Overall, she ranks fourth on the list of most-searched Halloween costumes, trailing only “Angry Birds,” “Black Swan” and “Playboy Bunny.” And while we can’t help you with either of those three (though, really, how hard is it to dress up like a ballerina or a bunny?) over on the MTV Style Blog, there’s an entire post dedicated to mimicking Minaj’s looks for Halloween , including the beehived princess-of-the-future look she rocked at the 2010 VMA pre show. And though they didn’t make Google’s most-searched list, the folks over at Style have also put together Halloween how-to’s for Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Ke$ha and Taylor Momsen. Of course, if you’re broke, you could just rock one of our costume suggestions , most of which don’t actually require a costume at all. Perhaps getting herself in the Halloween spirit, earlier this month Nicki wrapped filming on the video for Birdman’s latest single “Y.U. Mad,” in which she dresses as Lil Wayne, donning dreadlocks, a tank top and some saggy shorts to complete the look. Related Artists Nicki Minaj
This morning Disney released the first full trailer for Joss Whedon’s Marvel superhero party The Avengers , and ZOMG guys — have there ever been two minutes of action more packed with hero shots, zingers, and things blowing up before this very moment? ( Michael Bay might give Whedon a run for his money, but the Avengers trailer has what even his robot spectaculars don’t: copious slow-mo superhero booty shots. Consider the bar raised.)
