Plus: Director Joe Johnston talks to Entertainment Weekly about the politics of Captain America and ‘The Avengers.’ By Kara Warner Chris Evans in “Captain America: The First Avenger” Photo: Marvel Entertainment For all the “Captain America” fans who have been excited by the teaser trailer and magazine features , there have been just as many complaints about the fact that not much has yet been seen of the film’s chief and formidable villain, Red Skull. Luckily for those folks, Entertainment Weekly has the exclusive first look at genre-film favorite Hugo Weaving all red and scary-looking. EW also scored a meaty interview with the film’s director, Joe Johnston, in which he addresses a wide range of subjects, including why a superhuman can be sympathetic, the politics of Captain America (played by Chris Evans) and how much he had to think about Joss Whedon’s spin-off film “The Avengers.” “What I like is he’s not a superhero in the true sense of the word,” Johnston explained of how Steve Rogers/ Captain America is unlike Superman or Spider-Man. “He becomes a superhero but doesn’t have any superpowers. He is just the best possible human specimen. Imagine the fastest, strongest Olympian athlete. Add 30 percent. That’s Steve Rogers.” Regarding the character’s historic and politically charged past (the first issue of the Marvel comic featured the now-famous cover image of Captain America punching Hitler in the jaw), Johnston said that although his film is indeed a period piece, it isn’t a “flag waver.” “He was created as a propaganda tool, but he soon became much more than that,” Johnston told the magazine. “There are all these incarnations over the decades, but the film is not a flag waver. It’s about a guy who wants to do the right thing. And that transcends all nationalities and borders.” Finally, there has been much ado over the fact that several characters who have and will have their own standalone films will come together for Whedon’s highly anticipated “Avengers” movie. “I really didn’t [think about it],” Johnston said. “Because this was a period film, because this was the origin story, I didn’t have to worry about ‘The Avengers,’ which was a present-day story,” he explained. “We have present-day bookends and bring Cap back at the end, and then I basically hand him off. And ‘The Avengers’ is its own thing.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Captain America: The First Avenger.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . ‘Transformers’ Super Bowl Trailer: Explosions! Robots! Victoria’s Secret Model!

New 30-second ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ trailer premieres during Super Bowl XLV By Aly Semigran A scene from “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount Just in case there wasn’t enough testosterone coursing through Super Bowl XLV, the preview trailer for “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” should have done the trick. The new 30-second trailer for the third “Transformers” installment brought with it a bevy of battling robots, concerned-looking humans (the movie’s stars Shia LaBeouf, Tyrese Gibson, and Megan Fox’s replacement, Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), and the general destruction director Michael Bay tends to bring along with any project. Unlike the movie’s first trailer , which has already hit theaters and features Neil Armstrong’s journey to the moon in 1969 turning out a little differently (apparently in Bay’s world, one small step for man was one giant step for sneaky robots), this spot was short, and for “Transformers” fans, pretty sweet. With a tagline that warns “On 7/1/11 Earth Will Go Dark” spliced in with all the action (and that’s really all there is, as not a single line of dialogue is uttered in the spot), viewers only saw blips of what can be expected on the big screen this summer. The preview for the not-yet-rated flick featured scenes of disarray and panic on the streets (at times looking awfully reminiscent of another summer blockbuster with a Super Bowl ad: “Battle: Los Angeles”), burning cities, helicopter collisions and a car crash, which transforms into, well, Transformers. And, of course, there’s the return of both Bumblebee and Optimus Prime. All this in the span of about 30 seconds, America! What did you think of the “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” trailer? ‘Captain America’ Trailer Premieres During Super Bowl XLV

Clip offers glimpses of Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull and Cap’s transformation to super-soldier. By Adam Rosenberg A scene from “Captain America: The First Avenger” Photo: Paramount The debut trailer for “Captain America: The First Avenger” made its bow tonight with only minutes remaining in the second quarter of Super Bowl XLV. The highly anticipated first look at the Joe Johnston-directed Marvel Comics adaptation did not fail to deliver, with glimpses of Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull and Cap’s transformation from puny weakling to genetically enhanced super-soldier. The 32-second trailer opens with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) stepping into the machine that infuses his body with the serum responsible for giving him superhuman strength and reflexes. “How do you feel,” Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter — Cap’s World War II love interest — asks Rogers as he steps out of the oversize metal coffin. “Taller,” Evans quips. A series of shots from different parts of the movie flash by next as Cap, shield in hand, runs, jumps and swings into action against a variety of bad guys, including a pair of armored HYDRA agents wielding flamethrowers. The money shot comes toward the end, of course, with Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull peeling off what appears to be a mask and revealing the scarred, red face beneath. The trailer ends with Atwell and Evans. Cap’s got what must be an early, unpainted prototype of his shield in hand, whose effectiveness Atwell tests with a pistol. “What do you think,” Evans asks, holding the shield up just in time to catch the oncoming bullets. “I think it works,” she fires back with a smirk. “Captain America: The First Avenger” hits 2-D and 3-D screens this summer on July 22. Justin Bieber ‘Never Say Never’ Ad To Air During ‘Glee’ Super Bowl 2011 Episode

Who says that young girls don’t care about Super Bowl Sunday? This year there’s a big reason for tweens, teens and non-football fans to get in on the action. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a new spot for Justin Bieber’s “Never Say Never” 3-D flick will run during the super special post-Super Bowl episode of “Glee.” The 30-second commercial is set to air during the February 6 episode of the hit Fox comedy. The film opens one week later, on Valentine’s Day weekend. THR further reports that the ad will be shown during “Glee” and not the Super Bowl proper since the film’s target demographic is more likely to tune in to the musical TV show than the big game. This is not the first time Bieber has teamed up with a major sporting event to support a release. During Game 3 of last year’s World Series, the teen pop star debuted a mini-music video for the unplugged version of his song “Never Say Never” to promote his acoustic album, My Worlds Acoustic. Bieber’s flick isn’t the only movie taking advantage of the Super Bowl’s massive viewership. Several blockbusters will air commercials on Fox sometime during the evening, whether it’s preshow, during the game or, in Bieber’s case, postshow. It reportedly costs about $3 million for 30 seconds of airtime on the big night. Variety reports that the movies “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” “Super 8,” “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “Cowboys and Aliens,” “Priest,” “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Just Go With It,” “Battle: Los Angeles,” “Limitless,” “Rango” and “The Eagle” all will have commercials broadcast during Super Bowl Sunday.

Demi Lovato Will Not Star In ‘The Avengers’

Disney starlet was rumored to be up for a role in the all-star superhero film. By James Dinh Demi Lovato Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for PCA Demi Lovato still has her 2011 touring plan , but one gig the teen sensation doesn’t have on her agenda is a starring role in “The Avengers.” Contrary to reports, the 18-year-old singer/actress will not be featured in the film about a team of Marvel superheroes, according to The Hollywood Reporter. THR reports that sources inside Lovato’s and Marvel’s camps are “denying across the board” that the “Camp Rock” star is involved in any way in the all-star comic book adaptation, which is tentatively due in 2012. Part of the difficulty in hiring the actress is that the Joss Whedon-directed film will begin shooting in spring 2011 and the starlet is still undergoing her stay at a medical treatment center for “emotional and physical issues.” Despite the circulating Lovato rumor, Marvel may still be on the lookout for another female actress to join the male-heavy cast. As of now, “The Avengers” superhero lineup includes Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Samuel Jackson (Nick Fury), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Chris Evans (Captain America), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor). Things have been looking up for the “Sonny With a Chance” star. Not only did the songstress come to an agreement with dancer Alex Welch, whom she allegedly punched before leaving her joint tour with the Jonas Brothers, but the Disney star was also able to spend some time with her family on Christmas Day . She was spotted with her family on the holiday getting food near her treatment facility in Woodridge, Illinois.
