Bad Guys Have Cooler Motorcycles Than Captain America in Just-Released Set Photos

New photos from the upcoming Captain America have been released from the film’s set in…Britain? What!? So much for patriotism. In any case, it looks like the captain (played here by a stuntman, not the very carefully cast Chris Evans) has his work cut out for him – while he chokes on exhaust fumes from an bulky military cycle, Red Skull’s henchman zip along on sleek bikes that look like they came from the future. Check them out after the jump.

‘Captain America’ Director’s ‘Entire Career’ Got Him Job, Marvel Boss Says

Joe Johnston’s groundbreaking design work on ‘Star Wars,’ ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ helped land him ‘Captain’ chair, Kevin Feige says. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Captain America Photo: Marvel Comics Summer 2011 is going to be a big one for comic book movies — specifically because of two features from Marvel Studios: “Captain America” and “Thor.” And while there’s still almost a full year to go until those films are released, ever since the casts of the two flicks made appearances at San Diego Comic-Con last month, the Internets have been buzzing with anticipation for the star-spangled hero and the God of Thunder. When Marvel’s head honcho Kevin Feige stopped by our live stream during the Con, we peppered him with questions about all of their upcoming projects, including how they decided on putting Joe Johnston and Kenneth Branagh in the director’s chairs . With Branagh, who’ll helm “Thor,” Feige said, in a nutshell, he “chased it.” In Johnston’s case, however, the reasons had more to do with Johnston’s already well-established filmmaking cred. “I think Joe’s entire career has been leading up to this,” Feige told MTV News. “When you look at the design work he did on the original ‘Star Wars,’ I saw a bunch of people dressed as Boba Fett already lined-up for his signing,” Feige recalled fondly. “The work he did with [Steven] Spielberg on Raiders [of the Lost Ark], the two films he directed, of course ‘The Rocketeer.’ I think his whole career has been leading up to this movie.” Johnston is certainly no stranger to genre/fantasy filmmaking. In addition to having served as art director on some of the most visually intense and celebrated movies of all time — the first two original “Star Wars” films and the aforementioned “Raiders of the Lost Ark” — he also directed “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” “Hidalgo” and “The Wolfman.” As for Johnston’s take on “Captain America,” his star, Chris Evans , told us that the film will be highly stylized, but not too “glossy” and not too dark. “I definitely asked Joe, what kind of gloss are we going for here? Is this going to have the kind of ‘Spider-Man,’ ‘Fantastic Four’ shine?” Evans recalled. “He said it’s not going to be that glossy, not that colorful, but we’re not going as dark as something like ‘Batman.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “Thor” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” . Ke$ha Strips Down And Glitters Up In ‘Take It Off’ Video

Singer says getting naked in the new clip is all about being ‘raw and real.’ By James Montgomery Ke$ha in her “Take it Off” music video Photo: RCA Ke$ha recently told MTV News that during downtime on tour with Rihanna , the pop princesses “have slumber parties and pillow fights and … talk about boys, naked.” And it sounds like that stripped-down sensibility has carried over to her upcoming “Take It Off” video . “It’s my favorite video, I think, ever, that I’ve done because I get to get really dirty in glitter sand, and we all get naked because we’re just, like, taking it all off,” she said. But the “Take It Off” clip isn’t just about taking off your clothes and rolling in glitter. “It’s also about taking off your inhibitions and being raw and real,” Ke$ha said. “And then we start tearing each other apart into pieces, and we’re all made out of glittery magic dust … star dust.” OK, so maybe it is mostly about getting naked. Either way, Ke$ha says the video is still her favorite. Not even the recent clip of Israeli soldiers dancing to her hit “Tik Tok” or the May 2 episode of “The Simpsons” that used the song in its opening sequence could top it. And yet those were pretty cool. “It’s amazing … I love it,” she sad. “Having Israeli soldiers dancing to ‘Tik Tok’ and landing the opening of ‘The Simpsons’ … [they’re] dreams. It’s been a pretty good year.” Related Photos Ke$ha On The Set Of Her Video For ‘Take It Off’ Related Artists Ke$ha

Here are some of the movies we can’t wait to check out: “Green Lantern”: Saturday at 11:45 a.m. PT Saturday marks the kickoff of Warner Bros.’ blockbuster presentation in Hall H, and there’s little doubt “Green Lantern,” based on the DC Comics property, is the studio’s most eagerly awaited flick. Coming on the heels of a first look at Ryan Reynolds as the titular superhero , fans have been promised the first-ever glimpse at actual movie footage. There’s no official word that Reynolds will be in the house, but we’re going to go ahead and predict he’ll make an appearance. “Tron: Legacy”: Friday at 11:15 a.m. PT This sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic has appeared at three straight Cons. After premiering test footage in ’08 and a more robust video in ’09, you can now expect Disney to deliver a hefty look at the new film, which arrives in theaters in December. Castmembers expected to attend include Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, Garrett Hedlund and Michael Sheen, as well as director Joseph Kosinski. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”: Saturday at 11:45 a.m. PT Anything having to do with the boy wizard shoots immediately to the top of many Con-goers’ wish-lists. This year, Warner Bros. will debut fresh “Deathly Hallows” footage, as the studio pushes toward opening the first part of this series’ finale in December. No castmembers have been announced, but there’s always a chance someone from Hogwarts might stop by to greet fans. “Thor” & “Captain America: The First Avenger” Saturday at 6 p.m. PT We’ve been checking out concept art and photos for both these Marvel adaptations, but who knows what we’ll get at the Con? “Thor” has been shooting since early this year, while “Captain America” just began production last month. Will we get footage from either flick? Let’s wait and see. We do hear “Thor” stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and Kat Dennings will be at the Con, and we’re also hoping to see Captain America himself, Chris Evans, drop in on the festivities. “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”: Thursday at 6 p.m. PT In the midst of the Marvel and DC behemoth is “Scott Pilgrim,” a graphic novel series that started out as an indie hit and has now graduated to the mainstream. Clips and trailers have been lighting up on the Web for months, so who knows how they’ll step it up for Con fans. We expect, somehow, they will. Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brandon Routh and Jason Schwartzman will be on hand, as well as director Edgar Wright and series author Bryan Lee O’Malley. There Hollywood Goes Again; Director Joe Johnston: Captain America Won’t be ‘Flag-Waver’

If insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, liberal Hollywood directors must be utterly certifiable. How else does one explain Hollywood’s penchant for de-Americanizing thoroughly patriotic superhero and/or comic book icons? Take Joe Johnston. The cinematic genius who gave the world “Jurassic Park 3” is directing a “Captain America” feature that will release in 2011, the 70th anniversary of the Marvel  superhero’s creation. Johnston told the audience at Comic-Con 2010 that Cap will not be a “jingoistic American flag-waver” but will instead be “re-interpret[ed]” as a “good person” in the World War II-set film. Noted Geoff Boucher of the Los Angeles Times blog Hero Complex : “He wants to serve his country, but he’s not this sort of jingoistic American flag-waver,” Johnston said. “He’s just a good person. We make a point of that in the script: Don’t change who you are once you go from Steve Rogers to this super-soldier, you have to stay who you are inside, that’s really what’s important more than your strength and everything. It’ll be interesting and fun to put a different spin on the character and one that the fans are really going to appreciate.” Boucher portrayed Johnston’s move as part and parcel of how modern-day directors have re-envisioned comic book staples such as Batman and Iron Man and defended him by adding: Some pundits will pounce on all of this as another desecration of an American touchstone, but how many of them have ever read the books?  The character, created by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon , was certainly un-conflicted about his country and its mission during the clear-cut days of the 1940s, but it didn’t always stay that way. In late 1974, for instance, in the months after President Nixon’s resignation, Steve Rogers chucked the star-spangled costume and changed his hero name to  Nomad (although, by 1976, Cap and original artist Kirby had the hero in Bicentennial mode). True, comic book writers and illustrators are not immune from making political statements with beloved characters. But that doesn’t mean those moves are rewarded with greater market share or even the sustained loyalty of longtime fans. There’s a reason that the “Nomad” experiment fell by the wayside.  What’s more, while Boucher equates Johnston’s move with say Jon Favreau’s take on Iron Man, it is arguable that Favreau’s vision of Tony Stark/Iron Man is a fundamentally patriotic libertarian-conservative American hero. Both movies were wildly successful in both the U.S. and foreign audiences. By contrast, “GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra” — which conservative pundit Greg Gutfeld panned as ” a Benetton ad with rocket launchers ” — earned slightly less than half worldwide as did “Iron Man 2.” What’s more, the opening weekend for “GI Joe” earned only $54.7 million in its opening weekend compared to the $128.1 million “Iron Man 2” raked in during its first weekend. American and foreign movie audiences love a good superhero action flick and it doesn’t hurt to have a thoroughly patriotic American protagonist to cheer for. Image via L.A. Times.

6 Films That Comic-Con 2010 Could Make or Break

Some movies are going into this year’s Comic-Con as returning heroes (like Tron Legacy , which has been shown off to great effect for two years running) or sure things (like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World , which could have been conceived in a Comic-Con test tube), but there are several big films that have a lot to prove at the Con — and a lot to lose. Here are six properties that could go either way:

Sarah Palin Reacts To Levi Johnston And Bristol Palin’s Engagement

Former Alaska governor’s statement emphasizes daughter’s belief in ‘redemption and forgiveness.’ By Gil Kaufman Sarah Palin (file) Photo: Chip Somodevilla/ Getty Images You can bet things are going to be a bit tense at the reception. Just hours after the cover of this week’s Us Weekly was revealed — depicting a once-again engaged Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston — Bristol’s mother, former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin weighed in on the surprise news. “Bristol at 19 is now a young adult. We obviously want what’s best for our children,” Palin and snowmobiling husband Todd said in a statement that was read on the “Today” show on Wednesday morning (July 14). “Bristol believes in redemption and forgiveness to a degree most of us struggle to put in practice in our daily lives.” The not-so-subtle message of the statement appeared to diss to high school dropout Johnston, 20, the one-time Playgirl model and aspiring actor who went on a tear criticizing the Palin household after he and Bristol broke up in December 2008, two weeks after their son, Tripp, was born. Bristol told Us that the couple got engaged again two weeks ago, that she had forgiven Levi for his unkind words and that they had not alerted her mom to the news, a decision she said made her a little afraid. “We got engaged two weeks ago,” she admitted. “It felt right, even though we don’t have the approval of our parents. … It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she’ll jump onboard.” Abstinence advocate Bristol is pictured wearing all white on the cover and standing alongside Johnston, also dressed in white and holding Tripp. “Today” reported that no wedding date has been set yet, but that the young couple would like to tie the knot quickly, perhaps as soon as next month. Until then, they are reportedly living separately. What do you think of Sarah Palin’s statement? Tell us in comments below.

Will Mark Ruffalo Play The Hulk In ‘The Avengers’?

Actor is reportedly ‘in late-stage discussions’ to take over Edward Norton’s role in the comic book supergroup. By Kara Warner Mark Ruffalo Photo: Mike Coppola/ FilmMagic Hot on the heels of Marvel’s big announcement Monday that Edward Norton would not be reprising the role of Bruce Banner in “The Avengers” comes a report that studio head Kevin Feige and company have tapped Mark Ruffalo to take over the role. According to Deadline Hollywood Daily , Ruffalo is “now in late-stage discussions between Marvel and his brand-new agency United Talent to play this key member of the Avengers ensemble.” Regarding the ensemble in question, which includes Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/ Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Feige’s statement seemed to hint that the production wanted more of a team player: ” ‘The Avengers’ demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble. … We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.” Whether Norton fit the bill is up for debate, but Ruffalo has often appeared in films as part of an ensemble or in various scene-stealing supporting roles (he was also an MTV Movie Awards nominee with “13 Going on 30” co-star Jennifer Garner for Best Musical Performance in 2005) and has a reputation within the industry for being very well-liked among his peers. When MTV News spoke with Ruffalo about the possibility of his taking on a comic book character or movie, the actor revealed he had been in talks to play Harvey Dent in “The Dark Knight,” calling it the “Godfather” of comic book movies. “[It] raises the bar on anything,” he said of “The Dark Knight.” “Nothing can touch it in that genre. It’s great filmmaking.” Ruffalo added that he wasn’t sure if tights or superhero garb were in his future, but that he’s open to the opportunity. “I don’t know if I’ll ever end up in that world,” Ruffalo told MTV News. “But I’d love to work with Christopher Nolan. He’s one of those directors you want to work with. He’s a great director.” What do you think of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner? Let us know in the comments!

Stanley Tucci is Captain America’s Creator

Stanley Tucci had a great 2009, but how can he follow up the one-two Streep-loving/child-raping punch that was Julie & Julia and The Lovely Bones ? With a superhero movie, of course. Today, Marvel announced that Tucci will play Dr. Abraham Erskine, the scientist whose secret experiment creates the title character of Captain America . Oh good: nerdy, tortoiseshell-glasses-wearing Stanely is the best kind of Stanley. [ Coming Soon ]
