I t’s been nearly a year since NBA star LeBron James opened the I Promise School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio and it has proven to be nothing short of impactful in the lives of underserved children. According to CBS Sports , its students are making strides and displaying excellence when it comes to academics. “We are reigniting dreams that were extinguished — already in third and fourth grade,” said Brandi Davis, the principal at LeBron James’s I Promise School https://t.co/mzVUtgtUOY — The New York Times (@nytimes) April 13, 2019 When many of the students started their journey with the school they were at least one grade level behind and now they are outperforming other students in their district. Results from Measures of Academic Progress testing showed that 90 percent of students met or surpassed expectations in math and reading, their test scores increased at a higher rate than nearly 100 other schools, and students who were reading below grade level are now within or above the 25th percentile. Furthermore, fourth-graders went from the second to 30th percentile in math and third-graders made improvement in that area as well going from the first to the 18th percentile. James is happy to witness the progress the students have made and hopes that it brings attention to the need for quality education in underserved communities. “These kids are doing an unbelievable job—better than we all expected,” he said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “When we first started, people knew I was opening a school for kids. Now people are going to really understand the lack of education they had before they came to our school. People are going to finally understand what goes on behind our doors.” The I Promise School has grown to become a staple in the community. Aside from enriching the lives of children through education, it provides resources for low-income families; including everything from a food pantry to career support. The school will launch summer camps surrounding STEM education within the next few months and in 2021 students will have the opportunity to further their education at the University of Akron free of tuition. A lthough tech companies have been stagnant with moving the needle on racial and gender diversity, there are many individuals who are rising up the ranks and breaking barriers in the industry. According to USA Today , Facebook has nominated PayPal executive Peggy Alford to its board of directors. Alford, a prominent technology executive, would be the first African-American woman and second African-American to join the board of the social media giant. https://t.co/YThlHAPraP — USA TODAY (@USATODAY) April 12, 2019 The nomination is historic as Alford will become the first Black woman and the second Black person to join the board. The tech industry veteran—who is a graduate of the University of Dayton—has served in leadership positions at eBay and Rent.com. She took on the role of Senior Vice President of Core Markets at PayPal this year. Prior to joining the PayPal team, she was the Chief Financial Officer and Head of Operations for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative; an organization created by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan that is designed to use technology as a solution to better education and change the criminal justice system. Zuckerberg believes Alford’s presence on the board will help the company move in the right direction in regards to diversity. “Peggy is one of those rare people who’s an expert across many different areas — from business management to finance operations to product development,” he said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “I know she will have great ideas that will help us address both the opportunities and challenges facing our company.” Alford is beyond thrilled to join the board and says she admires the company’s “desire to face hard issues head-on.” Last year American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault became the first African-American person to be appointed to Facebook’s board of directors. There is a need for more diversity on corporate boards—especially in regards to gender. According to Bloomberg , 21,424 U.S. board seats are held by men while only 5,088 are held by women. H oward University and Lionsgate have joined forces in an effort to tackle Hollywood’s diversity issues. The HBCU and the entertainment company have launched an internship program to teach students the ins and outs of television and film, Deadline reported. Thanks to @Lionsgate , students at Howard University in D.C. are getting a chance to learn the entertainment business through paid internship programs https://t.co/32IuNnmVN5 — Deadline Hollywood (@DEADLINE) April 11, 2019 The program—which initially started at UCLA—is designed to build a pipeline of diverse students and open up career pathways for them to enter the industry. During the internship program, six to 12 students will have the opportunity to work across various departments in the company, go on field trips, attend lectures from prominent individuals in the industry and work on their own projects. The effort to bring the program to Howard was led by alumni Sen. Kamala Harris . The institution’s president Wayne A. I. Frederick says that the internship program will be an integral part of ensuring that the next generation of Hollywood executives is diverse. “Howard University has produced several graduates from film, law, business and theater who have paved their own paths into Hollywood through their persistence, however there is more work to do before the entertainment industry reflects the diverse audiences it serves,” Frederick said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “I applaud our partners at Lionsgate for building a bridge from higher education to the workplace which will help diversify Hollywood behind the camera and create a new generation of executives.” Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns added that students in the program are “creating opportunities for us to make our workplace more diverse and our storytelling richer and more varied.” Both Lionsgate and Howard hope that they can set the example for other HBCUs and entertainment companies to follow suit. Programs that create career pathways in the entertainment industry for underrepresented groups are needed. According to UCLA’s 2019 Hollywood Diversity Report , people of color make up a mere 7.8 percent of film writers and only 12.6 percent of film directors come from diverse backgrounds. The images that we see in the media don’t often show images of Black love, let alone celebrate it. NPR did a whole report on why so many Black Women are single. The article stated: Dating is hard for lots of people, but for black women in the United States, it can be uniquely horrible. For one thing, we’re often expected to conform to white beauty standards. For another, we’re up against a hold parade of racist stereotypes: that we’re angry, overbearing, lazy, prudish and hyper-sexual and emasculating all at once. Those stereotypes and expectations do two things. First, they limit the pool of people who are interested in dating black women. And second, they often create situations where we, as black women, try super hard not to fit into those categories. So rather than relaxing and trying to have fun with potential dates, we’re caught up in the impossible game of trying to seem fun and ambitious and feminine and flirty…but not too flirty. But don’t fret— there are still some brothers out that love them some melanin. Couples like Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have had many ups and downs throughout their nearly decade long relationship, but somehow they’ve managed to prevail and look like a Black Barbie and Ken doll in the process. April is National Couple Appreciation Month , and there are several ways to celebrate: Leave a love note on your mate’s car. Surprise your love with coffee or tea before they wake. If your sweetheart is a selfie-loving type and you’re not, give in on occasion and take a couples’ selfie. Let your significant other overhear you complimenting them. A 15-second video shows a Sheriff’s deputy body slamming a sixth-grade student outside of Lincoln Park Acamedy in Fort Piece, Florida. According to an incident report obtained by WPTV the confrontation between the student and deputy occurred on April 9. Before the body slam, the student, who was not identified, had already been suspended from school for being disruptive in a classroom. Later he was standing outside “being disruptive” while waiting for his parents to come pick him up. Lincoln Park Academy’s Assistant Principal said however that the student was not supposed to leave his office and asked the deputy to help bring the student back inside. The Deputy reported that the student ignored his commands and “continued walking with his fist clenched and had an agitated expression on his face. His brows were turned down and he was punching his fist into the palm of his hand” before the slam. St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara is denying that the deputy used excessive force. “Our school resource deputy is very familiar with this student and knows he has a violent history, including possessing weapons,” Mascara said during a press conference reports WPTV . He added that a knife had recently been confiscated from the student and the student has to be escorted around campus because he’s been “physically aggressive to staff and students.” Do YOU think that justifies that body slam???

They say a picture can say one thousand words. In the case of Jenni “JWOWW” Farley, however, a new photo on her Instagram can be summed up by just using four: I’ve totally moved on. The veteran Jersey Shore cast member posted the image below late Friday, giving followers a look at what appears to be the reality star out on a date. “Cheers to the weekend,” Farley captioned the intriguing snapshot, which shows her hand holding a glass of red wine while she has lunch with some guy on a terrace overlooking the water. The 33-year-old MTV personality went ahead later and shared a video on Snapchat that featured a glimpse of this same dude’s arm as he and Jenni sat in a car together while “Titanium” played on the radio. We wonder what may have happened next… Farley’s represenative, Robyn Matarazzo, even on the social media posts, telling Us Weekly in no uncertain terms that Farley was announcing a relationship to the world here: “Jwoww has moved on and is happy,” Matarazzo says. Moved on, she means of course, from estranged husband Roger Mathews. The former couple shares two children (Meilani, 4, and Greyson, 2, the latter of whom has been diagnosed with Autism) and they got married in October of 2015. They then announced their separation three years later, seemingly on amicable terms, with Mathews even saying publicly that he planned on winning Jenni back. But then A LOT changed. Farley accused Mathews of abuse in late 2018 after the two got into some kind of altercation in the kitchen of their home. Mathews was led out of the residence that night by the police and was ordered to stay away from Farley and the home for an undetermined period of time. He then jumped on Instagram and simply went off on his wife, alleging that Farley cared more about her job than about her kids and that she had falsely accused him and is a giant liar and lots of other mean and shocking things. You have threatened me.” She went on and on and on along these lines, too: I will never allow someone to try all avenues to ruin the person I worked so hard to become… I have been broken down, beaten, hospitalized, traumatized, threatened, degraded, battered, and abused. I got out. I stand strong today. For me. For Greyson. For Meilani. They will not grow up watching their mother being a victim of domestic violence. I will be a victim no longer. Roger, know this here and for always – my kindness should never again mistaken for weakness. Remember that. I will not be threatened. I will not be controlled. I will not be broken. Mathews actually admitted to some physical behavior in an open letter to Farley, but also claimed she was always the instigator. In short, things have been very ugly between this pair for months. And there are two small children stuck in between. “Jenni’s kids’ needs and wants will always come first,” Matarazzo told Us Weekly , concluding: “She is being an adult about the divorce and working towards being better coparents. Source: Bill Ross / Getty Man Pushes Child From Third Floor Balcony A 24-year old Man is currently in custody due to what police are calling the “Mall Of America incident.” According to reports, a 5-year-old child suffered significant injuries when a man either threw or pushed him from the third floor of the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN. Eyewitnesses told police Chief Jeff Potts that the person suspected of pushing or throwing the child “took off running immediately after the incident.” Potts told reporters : “At this time, we do not believe that there is a relationship between the child or the family of the child. The child did suffer significant injuries. [He] has been transported to the hospital and has been receiving care. [We] believe this to be an isolated incident.” The Bloomington Police Department is investigating an incident at the Mall of America today. A five-year-old child suffered injuries and is at the hospital now. A press conference will happen outside the north entrance at 12:15 PM next to the security vehicle.
