Cutting Spending is Sexist! WaPo Headline: ‘British Women to Bear Budget Pain’

Liberal Democratic strategists reading today’s Washington Post are probably taking notes, preparing talking points for a future which may hold a Republican Congress in the cards. “British women to bear budget pain” cried the page A6 headline. “Report says austerity plan mostly cuts into women’s livelihoods,” added the subheader for London-based Post staffer Anthony Faiola’s  story. Faiola noted that “[t]he Fawcett Society, a leading women’s rights group here, filed an unprecedented complaint with the nation’s high court this month, arguing that the government failed to consider the effect on women of its leaner ’emergency budget.'” At no point did Faiola find a critic to allege that the social welfare system in Britain itself was “sexist” or at least that it victimizes poor Britons, particularly women, by creating a culture of dependency on the state. Indeed, among his 19 paragraphs, Faiola quickly dispatched the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition’s defense with a brief quote from finance minister George Osborne in paragraph 13. Faiola quickly got back on track two paragraphs later by noting that “[s]ome Britons… see the cuts as anything but fair,” and then turning to the lament of one Joanne Morgan “a divorced mother of three teenagers” who works for the state and “is set to lose $285 a month in child-assistance payments.” Of course, Faiola failed to balance out Morgan’s tale of woe by finding an average bloke in a pub to dismiss as poppycock the argument that budget cuts are sexist.

NY Daily News Reporter Touts Online Poll That 70% of New Yorkers Think Mosque Opposition Based on ‘Hatred’

Appearing in the 2:00PM ET hour on MSNBC, New York Daily News reporter Samuel Goldsmith cited a poll featured on the paper’s website , about opposition to the Ground Zero mosque: “[it] shows that 70% of New Yorkers say that they think the opposition is out of hatred and religious intolerance.” Unfortunately, Goldsmith forgot to mention that it was a completely unscientific poll that only appeared within articles on the topic and allowed people to potentially vote numerous times. The slanted poll question read: “Is opposition to the building of a mosque near Ground Zero intolerant?” The three responses offered were: “Yes, it’s pure religious bigotry against Muslims; No, you can be against because it dishonors victims of Sept. 11; Maybe, but the sensitive thing to do is to move it further from the WTC site.” Goldsmith touted the Daily News poll after anchor Jeff Rossen cited a scientific poll on the issue: “A new Siena College poll suggests – and we actually have the results right here – that 63% of New Yorkers oppose this Islamic center. Only 23% support it.” After promoting the unreliable online poll, Goldsmith argued: “…there’s a lot of voices coming out….It’s hard to really get a grasp of what the public opinion is, I think.” Here is a full transcript of the August 18 program: 2:08PM ET JEFF ROSSEN: President Obama not backing down from his comments about the Ground Zero mosque and the Islamic center. At the end of an event in Columbus, Ohio today a reporter asked the President whether he had any regrets, speaking out on the issue. BARACK OBAMA: The answer is no regrets. ROSSEN: You couldn’t hear that, he said the answer is no regrets. Samuel Goldsmith is with the New York Daily News. Thanks so much for joining us Samuel. GOLDSMITH: How are you? ROSSEN: So, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi now calling for an investigation into the groups that are opposing this. What are your thoughts? SAMUEL GOLDSMITH: Well, she’s the first one to come out and say that there should be an investigation into that side of the argument. So far there have just been calls for investigations into the group behind the project. ROSSEN: There are reports that the makers – that the developers of the mosque have turned down an offer from the New York Governor David Paterson to relocate this center and this mosque. Is there any compromise left, you think – in the cards? GOLDSMITH: You know I’m not – I’m having a hard time finding out if that report’s true. I don’t think it is. They said yesterday that they were willing to meet with the Governor. Though they’re also saying they’re not interested in relocating. ROSSEN: A new Siena College poll suggests – and we actually have the results right here – that 63% of New Yorkers oppose this Islamic center. Only 23% support it. It appears that doesn’t matter to the President or to the Mayor as well. What are your thoughts? GOLDSMITH: It’s interesting, the poll, we have a poll on our website that also shows that 70% of New Yorkers say that they think the opposition is out of hatred and religious intolerance. So there’s a lot of voices coming out. The polls show one side of it. It’s hard to really get a grasp of what the public opinion is, I think. ROSSEN: At the same time, 64% of voters say the developers have the constitutional right to build the mosque. So it’s really a very interesting poll. Just as many people say they shouldn’t build it there but they also agree that they have the right to. GOLDSMITH: Which is basically what a lot of politicians have said, which is they’re not commenting on the wisdom of it, but they believe they have the right. That’s what the President said. ROSSEN: Samuel Goldsmith with the New York Daily News. Thanks for joining us, sir. GOLDSMITH: Thank you.

Justin Bieber Lines Up ‘U Smile’ As New Single

Motown-style number from My World 2.0 was initially slated for March release. By James Dinh Justin Bieber Photo: Robyn Beck/ Getty Images Justin Bieber is about to give his legion of devoted fans another reason to smile. The pop star says that the third single from his My World 2.0 will be the breezy “U Smile,” a song that was originally slated for release earlier this year. “It’s OFFICIAL- “U SMILE” is gonna be the New Single!! The song is dedicated to the fans so this one is for all of u!! Radio here we come!!” Bieber tweeted on Friday afternoon (August 6). “U Smile,” which has a retro Motown vibe, features the singer expressing his devotion to his sweetheart. ” ‘Cause my cards are on the table/ And I’m willing and I’m able/ But I fold to your wish/ Cause it’s my command,” he croons during the song’s bridge. The mid-tempo number was originally suppose to be released back in March but for some reason was held back by the release of the dance cut “Somebody to Love.” Bieber had already started promotion for the song, even treating national television audiences to live performances of the track on “American Idol” and “Saturday Night Live.” But if history repeats itself, there’s a strong possibility that “U Smile” will earn the 16-year-old yet another hit. When the song was first digitally released on iTunes this past spring, it moved quickly up the chart. The singer took to Twitter at the time to thank fans for the speedy accomplishment: “wrote this song for u guys, and now u are all helping it climb the TOP TEN of ITUNES… U SMILE is #10 already! thank u so much. Lets go #1!” he tweeted . The Biebster spoke to MTV News in March about working on the track alongside songwriters Jerry Duplessis, Arden Altino and Dan August Rig. “I worked with August. I got him. He’s a really good writer,” the singer said of his collaborator. “The song is amazing. We really love the song, so we decided to cut it. It’s really amazing.” What do you think Bieber fans? Pete Wentz Wants Black Cards To Make ‘Global Music’

Bassist asserts that new band isn’t making reggae music, but he wants to transcend ‘cultures and borders.’ By James Montgomery Pete Wentz Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images for Digitas With each passing week, we’re seemingly learning more and more about Pete Wentz’s new Black Cards project. First, the information came in drips and drabs — a snippet or two of a song, a few sentences from Wentz about who wasn’t in the band . Then things picked up a bit, when the bass player posted a lengthy message on the Cards’ site and then revealed the identity of the band’s mysterious female singer to Rolling Stone. But for all we know, there’s still plenty we don’t. And Wentz doesn’t exactly seem like he’s in a hurry to fill in all the Black Card blanks just yet. There is one misconception about the band, however, that he couldn’t wait to clear up: Despite what he may have written in that message on the Black Cards’ site about how he was influenced by a trip to Jamaica, this definitely isn’t a reggae band. “I think it came off as though it was gonna be a reggae band … that’s not true,” he wrote in an e-mail to MTV News. “It’s a mashing together of ideas — the first few pieces we put up were more big-band/jazz/dance, [but] I don’t know how to describe it. There are a few songs that have more of a reggae swing to the beat. I think I meant that I’m interested in making global music. I like the idea of art transcending cultures and borders … [but] who knows whether I can.” Of course, Wentz ended that statement by adding that the Cards do have one song — tentatively called “Summer Nights” — that “reminds me of Montego Bay … but it’s not necessarily a reggae song though.” Despite such vague statements, Wentz swears that he’s got a plan for the Black Cards, even if it’s a pretty loose one. After spending months searching for a “quirky, British girl” to front the band, he heard unknown singer Bebe Rexha — who hails from Long Island — laying down tracks in an adjacent studio, and decided to sign her up on the spot. “Really, [the band] wasn’t even a thought in my head until it all clicked together. I didn’t really even want to talk about Black Cards until we had figured it all out,” he wrote. “The truth is we’re writing/recording about a song every week or two weeks. Now we’re just trying to beat other songs we had.” Wentz has got big ideas, for certain, but he’s still trying to figure out how — or, really, if — he’s going to be able to pull them off. And that applies to the question of whether the Cards will be taking their act on the road anytime soon. “We have to figure out exactly what is practical. To me, if and when we play shows, I want them to be events,” he wrote. “I think this music lends itself to different imagery and exhibition [more] than anything I’ve been a part of before.” Are you excited about what you know of the Black Cards so far? ‘Predators’ Star, Director Would Love To Do Sequel

‘If ‘Predators 2’ was to come around, or ‘Predators-es,’ I’d jump at the opportunity,’ director Nimrod Antal says. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Todd Gilchrist and Josh Horowitz Adrien Brody Photo: MTV News When Robert Rodriguez sat down in the mid-’90s to script the next installment in the ‘Predator’ franchise, he ended up laying out far more than just one movie. “You could have split it up into three pictures,” Rodriguez told MTV News recently.

Exclusive: Pete Wentz Talks Mysterious New Black Cards Project

‘Later tonight and this week there will be more of Bl4ck C4rds revealed,’ he cryptically tells MTV News. By James Montgomery Pete Wentz Photo: Soul Brother/ FilmMagic For a guy so used to talking about, well, everything, Pete Wentz has been rather tight-lipped when it comes to Black Cards (or, as he puts it, “Bl4ck C4rds”), the mysterious new project he’s been putting together over the past few months. So far, there has been just a simple blog post about the thing, which included a link to the new Black Cards website and a message from Wentz that “there will be no treasure hunt. [No] viral campaign … just the opposite. Next week things will appear on this site in a very controlled distribution.” And he wasn’t kidding. The site now features a snippet of one song — an electronic, Elfman-via-Mos Eisley Cantina composition featuring a female singer, reportedly called “A Club Called Heaven” — and on Monday, Wentz took to his Twitter account to promise that there’d be even more Black Cards stuff coming Tuesday night (July 6). But other than that, he’s played the Cards close to the vest, and he kept it up when MTV News e-mailed him for more information on the project, writing only: “Later tonight and this week there will be more of Bl4ck C4rds revealed.” Of course, we sent him a follow-up e-mail, one that asked him just who is actually in the group (former Chiodos frontman Craig Owens seems to be involved, since he posted a short video playing a snippet of the same song on Vimeo ). More specifically, we had to know the identity of the much-discussed female singer, who some fans believe is Wentz’s wife, Ashlee Simpson. And, in keeping with recent form, this is how he replied: “Nobody is guessing right so far.” With that, the mystery continues to grow — until (presumably) Thursday night, at least. Are you curious to find out more about Wentz’s Black Cards? Let us know your theories the comments!

Drake’s Thank Me Later: A Track-By-Track Guide

Drizzy pulls out the big guns (Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys) for his much-anticipated debut. By Shaheem Reid and Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Thank him later or thank him now — 23-year-old Aubrey ” Drake ” Graham is confident you will be saying ” gracias. ” The long-anticipated, much-hyped Thank Me Later has finally arrived in stores. Now everyone has the opportunity to digest the body of work, and we’ll see how big an impact the LP makes on the SoundScan charts next week. Here is our guide to the album: 1. “Fireworks” (featuring Alicia Keys) With A. Keys helping out on the chorus, Drake sets the tone of the album, thinking aloud with candor. He hopes success and fame never lead him and Lil Wayne to have conflict. He also speaks on a brief relationship with Rihanna and expounds on family strife. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “Everything’s the same, but it feels different/ My dad call me up, knowing that I still listen/ And he still got his foot out, guilt trippin’/ It’s been years/ I just learned to deal with it.” 2. “Karaoke” Produced by tourmates Francis and the Lights, the second track on the album goes down light, like a cool glass of chardonnay. Young Drizzy sings for the most part on this one, with a brief rap at the end, about a relationship frayed by his career. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “I know they say the first love is the sweetest/ But that first cut is the deepest/ I tried to keep us together/ You were busy keeping secrets/ Secrets you were telling everybody but me/ Don’t be fooled by the money/ I’m still just young and unlucky.” 3. “The Resistance” Drake proclaims that the hip-hop game needed life, so he put his heart in it. This track may be the album’s most revealing, as he deals with friends saying he “changed” and getting robbed at gunpoint. The crime was apparently orchestrated by a girl he was close to. The 23-year-old also sheds a little light on almost becoming a father. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “This woman I messed with unprotected/ Texted and said she wish she would’ve kept it/ The one I’m laying next to just looked over and read it/ Man, I couldn’t tell you where the f— my head is.” 4. “Over” The rumbling first single completes Drake’s transition from breakout mixtape So Far Gone to Thank Me Later. Up until this point — both in sound and topic — his debut has served as an extension of last year’s set. On “Over,” the stakes are bigger, from the production to Drizzy’s introspection, as he paints a picture of paranoia mixed with euphoria. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “Y’all know them?/ Well f— it, me either/ But point the biggest skeptic out/ I’ll make them a believer/ It wouldn’t be the first time I done it, throwing hundreds/ When I should be throwing ones/ Bi—, I run it.” 5. “Show Me a Good Time” Young, rich and out of control — well, maybe not too out of control. As the album progresses, Drake settles into one of the LP’s feel-good anthems. He laughs in the face of haters and puts some of that hard-earned money as one of hip-hop’s new kings to good use. Shots on Drizzy. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “Call me overrated or created or too jaded/ Because any way you put it, bi—, I made it.” 6. “Up All Night” (featuring Nicki Minaj) Drake takes it to the clubs for this Nicki Minaj collabo, on which the two Young Money titans talk so much ish, their breath stinks. They pledge allegiance to their crew, pop bottles and clothing tags and leave losers in their wake. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “Cap on, brim bent/ Denzel every time/ She ain’t tryna pop that sh– for pimp/ OK, well, never mind/ I-I-I-I tried to told you: Drizzy still ain’t nothing nice/ Bracelet saying you should quit/ Car saying f— your life.” 7. “Fancy” (featuring Swizz Beatz and T.I.) A sure shot to become a women’s anthem. If this were the 1990s, we would say the ladies the fellas rap about here “got it goin’ on.” Their hair is did, their money is looking right, nails painted like an old-school Chevy in Houston. The triumphant trio salute the independent gals who have their own. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “Mature women with more than me were the first to tempt me/ And Jason had this girl Tammy with a purple Bentley/ How she got it, I ain’t never get to ask/ I just know she was fine like a ticket on the dash/ Yeah, but shout-out to the home-owners/ Girls who got diplomas and enough money to loan us.” 8. “Shut It Down” (featuring The-Dream) Drake channels his inner lothario on this slow-burner with his spiritual R&B mentor, The-Dream. The two trade verses on the swoon-inducing duet before Drake closes things out with a rap. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “Say, baby, I had to mention/ That if you were a star, you’d be the one I’m searching for/ Other girls they got attention/ But I just always feel like they’re in need of something you got/ It’s obvious you’re pretty/ Heard that you’re a student/ Working weekends in the city/ Trying to take you out, girl/ Hope you’re not too busy.” 9. “Unforgettable” (featuring Young Jeezy) A sample of Aaliyah’s angelic voice blesses the beginning of the record as Drizzy and Young Jizzle give insight as to what it means to be on top. They want their impact to leave a lasting impression. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “Yeah, I remember I used to have to sneak the car/ Now my insides are lookin’ like a Snickers bar/ Yeah, I’m talking caramel leathers/ Damn right, so fly I need feathers/ Same sh– in them streets, so what’s the dealy?/ I done everything in the A but f— Chilli.” – Young Jeezy 10. “Light Up” (featuring Jay-Z) The young upstart and the veteran MC square off on this track, which Drake called a second “turning point” of the album after “Over.” A defiant Drizzy taunts his detractors, firing off lyrical salvos before Hov lays out the blueprint for how the Toronto lyricist’s enemies will target him. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “And I’m just filling up this daily planner/ Getting busy ’cause I’m a star, no spangled banner/ Jealous dudes get to talking in their music/ And I just say I wrote it for your girlfriends, Kelsey Grammer.” 11. “Miss Me” (featuring Lil Wayne) The horns are blaring, Drake is stunting hard. He admits to a crush on Nicki Minaj and even mentions nuptials. Later, Wayne comes in and plays Albert Pujols as cleanup hitter, with another unorthodox but decidedly dope verse. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “Turn you to a vegetable like you laying in soup/ And when I’m in the booth, bi—, the lion is loose/ Man, I got so many styles, I am a group/ Damn, I’ll be gone till November/ But f— it, I ain’t trippin’/ I know Drizzy gonna kill ’em.” – Lil Wayne. 12.”CeCe’s Interlude” This serene interlude matches the one Drake delivered on So Far Gone, “Bria’s Interlude.” The two-minute number is an intimate and blunt testimony — no wooing, just Drake pouring his heart out. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “I wish I wasn’t famous/ I wish I was still in school/ So that I could have you in my dorm room/ I would put it on you.” 13. “Find Your Love” It’s sexy, it’s energetic, it sounds like nothing else on the radio right now. Drake puts all his cards on the table, telling a woman he’ll give her all his love and she better do the same in return. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “I’m more than just an option (hey, hey, hey)/ Refuse to be forgotten (hey, hey, hey)/ I took a chance with my heart (hey, hey, hey)/ And I feel it taking over.” 14. “Thank Me Now” The LP opened dark and closes on a high note. The Toronto blue chip gets in his b-boy stance and throws darts, solidifying his spot as one of the best MCs in hip-hop. Can’t-Miss Lyrics : “I could relate to kids going straight to the league/ When they recognize that you got what it takes to succeed/ And that’s around the time that your idols become your rivals/ You make friends with Mike but gotta AI him for your survival/ Damn, I swear sports and music are so synonymous/ ‘Cause we wanna be them, and they wanna be us.” Have you gotten your hands on Thank Me Later yet? CNBC’s Cramer and Burnett: Could BP and Obama Have Handled Spill Better?

Reports are surfacing that BP is finally considering a suspension of its shareholder’s dividend, but what could have been done differently to avert the public relations nightmare BP is facing? Two CNBC hosts had some ideas about that, and about what could have happened if BP chose not to play ball. Jim Cramer and Erin Burnett shared their thoughts on the “Stop Trading” segment of “Street Signs” June 11 . According to the “Mad Money” host, Obama could have set a foul precedent for multi-national businesses if BP (NYSE: BP ) didn’t agree to make some concessions on how it is handling its day-to-day operations in the wake of this ecological crisis.  “I think that this is a, a stock that represents great value but you’re dealing with the government,” Cramer said. “I saw that Nancy Pelosi, she’s the second most powerful person in our country, saying that they shouldn’t be paying a dividend. I mean, this is one of those situations where I know, the president’s approval ratings are down and what you got to do is you got to go after BP if you’re the president. I’m not saying I would do it but I’m saying if I were the president of the United States, BP is public enemy number one and you’re not even going to listen to what the British say. You just gotta say, ‘Guys, here’s the deal, we’re not, we’re not going to have any dividends here. And just you know, take it or leave it, partner, because this is a company that needs U.S. ball play.” And as for other cards the Obama administration could play? There were several since it’s politically ripe for the legislative and executive branches to act in an extraordinary manner. “Hey listen, the president could take away Prudhoe Bay,” Cramer continued. “There’s a Fifth Amendment against the taking of property in this country, as opposed to like say the old Soviet Union. But you know what, I got to tell you, when you got an angry president and angry Congress, nobody’s safe. And Mark Twain said that a few years ago.” And Burnett wondered if both parties involved, the federal government and BP, might have come out way ahead had this matter been handled behind the scenes. “You know, yeah, I just wonder Jim, you know if you think about it whether the administration in hindsight could have done it differently,” Burnett said. “You know, instead of having the first thing you do – go out and say they should cut the dividend publicly, making them sort of look evil, maybe privately you have that conversation. And maybe they did and BP was just so resistant, that’s why they went public. So maybe I’m jumping to a conclusion, but if they didn’t, it would seem maybe having a little bit more – let’s just say [better] relationship between the government and BP. At least while we get through this. It might have been a better thing.” But one thing Cramer pointed out that not a lot of other outlets have seemed to pick up on – the amount of oil gushing from this spill in such a short amount of time indicates this was an incredibly huge find from a purely oil exploration perspective. “What you have on right now, you see the flow, and I thought it was 1,500,” Cramer said. “I remember when I was on the ‘Today’ show and they were talking about it being 1,500 barrels, 2,000 barrels. Now look, here’s what my oil friends say. My oil friends are very tied in. This is the greatest well in the world right now. It is literally pumping out more oil than anyone has ever seen. It has not let up one bit. My friends who are oil men are saying the same thing over and over – “This is the greatest discovery in this planet and what’s really going on is that they can’t get the pressure down. They’re just stalling hoping the pressure will come down and it doesn’t stop. It’s the greatest find of all time.”

Eminem’s Recovery Leaks Two Weeks Early

Rapper’s latest is officially due out on June 22. By Gil Kaufman Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope It doesn’t matter if you’re a new kid on the block like Drake or a veteran like Eminem , chances are your new album is bound to leak early at some point. Marshall Mathers is the latest to fall to the leak plague, as his upcoming Recovery hit the Internet on Monday, two weeks before its June 22 official release date, and spread like wildfire. Fan forums immediately blew up with quick-take reviews on the rapper’s second album in as many years, raving about the many different sounds Slim Shady tries on over the course of the disc. The opening track, “Cold Wind Blows,” finds Em taking aim at some of his favorite targets, viciously daring haters to take him on while dropping references to Elton John, Michael Vick, Aquaman, Michael J. Fox and Mariah Carey before dipping into a sing-songy chorus, “I’m as cold as the cold wind … blows, bla bla bla blows.” He gets contemplative on the expansive acoustic ballad “Space Bound” and praises his second chances on the gospel stomper “Cinderella Man.” He also weaves his way around a gorgeous Rihanna chorus on the troubled-love ballad “Love the Way You Lie.” The leak comes less than a week after the online debut of the second song from the album, an unexpected collaboration with Pink called “Won’t Back Down.” The DJ Khalil-produced track finds Em dropping his usual verbal bombs, taking on all comers in his inimitable style. “Listen, garden tool/ Don’t make me introduce you to my power tool,” Em raps over Khalil’s droning organ chords. “You know the f—ing drill/ How you douche bags feel?/ Knowing you’re disposable, Summer’s Eve, Massengill.” Eminem spoke about his Recovery collaborations while in France on a promotional tour. Pink, Rihanna and Lil Wayne are all featured, a departure from Em’s previous projects, where the guest lists were usually limited to Shady or Aftermath artists. For “Won’t Back Down,” he explained, Pink was added to the track after it was completed. “When I did the song that I did with Pink, I laid my parts first and kind of heard her on the record and felt that she would smash this record,” Em said. Pink does her part with a fiery warning in the chorus: “You can sound the alarm, you can call out your guards/ You can fence in your yard, you can pull all the cards/ But I won’t back down, I won’t back down,” she sings. The video for “Not Afraid,” the album’s first single that’s been storming the charts, premiered on Sunday. In the dark clip directed by Richard Lee, the rapper stands on the ledge of a roof, slowly edging closer to the edge as he raps about coming out of a perilous time in his life. He’s able to pull back from the abyss and takes a walk through the streets of Newark ending up in a hall of mirrors where’s he’s forced to confront his reflection.
