MTV News’ resident Lohan defender explains how returning to ‘Saturday Night Live’ may be the first step in her career comeback. By John Mitchell Lindsay Lohan Photo: Evan Agostini/Getty Images I’ve long been a defender of Linsday Lohan . I root for her success and am eternally hopeful — and thus often disappointed — that she will get it together. When people slam her, mock her long, long list of troubles , I can always be called upon to email them a link to Robert Downey Jr.’s biography, which has many parallels to Lohan’s but differs because it also contains the phrase “.357-caliber Magnum handgun.” Downey’s list of troubles easily eclipses Lohan’s (at this point, anyway), but he managed to fully recover and go on to become one of the biggest stars on the planet, starring in enormous box-office hits like “Iron Man” and “Sherlock Holmes” and earning Oscar nominations for films like “Tropic Thunder.” She’s not entirely out of the woods just yet, but she’s been earning “glowing” reports on her probation progress and was recently announced as the host of “Saturday Night Live” on March 3. A series of good signs and the first truly positive news out of Camp Lohan in a long time. When word of Lohan’s hosting stint on “SNL” was announced, I was incredibly pleased. For many reasons, it seems like a smart move, and if she pulls it off, it could be the first step (of many necessary steps) toward a real career comeback. Here’s why:

One domestic-violence expert talks to MTV News about the former couple’s new songs. By Jocelyn Vena Chris Brown and Rihanna in 2009 Photo: Getty Images When Rihanna and Chris Brown dropped not one, but two tracks together Monday night, the songs were met with mixed reactions. Some fans thought it was time for everyone to move on and embrace the former couple’s next chapter, while others argued that given Brown’s 2009 assault on Rihanna, it was inappropriate for them to record together. In the years since that assault, Rihanna has been open about her abusive relationship with the R&B singer, saying, “I don’t want to be the big domestic-violence spokesperson, because that doesn’t define who I am. But if I can help young women in any way, and that being one of the things they need help with, then I’ll do that.” Since that late 2009 interview with MTV News, Rihanna certainly hasn’t backed down in her career, releasing chart-topping singles, winning awards, going on tour and using videos and Twitter to show the world just how fierce she can be. After the release of the “Birthday Cake” and “Turn up the Music” remixes , Rita Smith, the executive director for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, talked to MTV News about what the collaborations mean. “I guess I’m not particularly surprised given the rumors that had gone on around this, and it’s also not surprising because many victims get back with their abusers, even after an assault. They love them, they think they change, and abusers are particularly good at convincing you they’ve changed,” she said. “I don’t know what their relationship is at this point, but I’m not surprised that she’s staying connected. “I’m still concerned because his reaction to people’s criticism of him being on the Grammys was fairly belligerent, and that didn’t give me much of a message or sense of hope that he had made changes since that assault,” she said, referring to the barrage of tweets Brown sent out after negative feedback about his Grammy appearance . “I hope he’s changed. I hope that he will never choose to use violence again no matter what kind of relationship he has with her or anybody else,” she continued. “I think, for me, it would be much more powerful if they could publicly state what’s different for them so that it doesn’t just leave us wondering if anything has changed and if they have learned anything in the process, because it was so public. We’re all wondering, because they’re not saying anything. That would leave us with a different message that it all doesn’t matter and they’re just going to do what they do.” Smith said that, given their history, “I think the message she’s sending is that the feelings of being in love are more important than your personal safety.” “The thing that matters most is whether you’re safe and whether you feel respected — that’s what matters most in a relationship and that’s what we should all be focusing on,” Smith added. “That has to be the primary goal of any relationship.” In the end, Smith hopes the two pop stars have grown since the very public assault. “I don’t know what the message is. I would like the message to be: People can change, and I will never be treated that way again and I will never treat anyone that way again. If they had released a song saying this is what this represents for us, that would be such a much more fabulous, powerful story than not saying a word,” she said. “The content of the songs seems to be more in-your-face than something about ‘we’re collaborating on something because we care about the way people treat each other.’ That would have been the message that would have been nice to come out of this very public and tragic incident.” What do you think of Chris Brown and Rihanna working together in light of their history? Dame Judi Dench has been diagnosed with Macular Degeneration, a condition associated with old age that is characterized by damage to one’s retina and, more often than not, leads to blindness. “I can’t read scripts any more because of the trouble with my eyes,” the veteran actress tells the U.K.’s Mirror . “And so somebody comes in and reads them to me, like telling me a story.” Dench has undergone treatment for the disease, but there’s no definitive cure. She’ll next appear in the latest James Bond movie, Skyfall , and says she has no plans of ending her career. “As long as there is a possibility of working, I’m not going to retire,” Dench says. “If I retire, nothing will work any more, and it’s hard enough as it is.” [Photo: WENN.com]
Young Money Barbie had that ‘Super Bass,’ conquering pop and rap landscapes to land on Hottest MCs in the Game list. By MTV News staff Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News / Getty Images A few months before the release of his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West took to Hot 97’s Angie Martinez-hosted radio show to promote his G.O.O.D. Friday series, but also to make a seemingly odd proclamation. “The scariest artist in the game right now … the scariest artist is definitely Nicki Minaj ,” West said. “I think she has the most potential out of everyone to be the #2 rapper of all time.” While we won’t even wade into a “hottest MCs of all time ” debate, MTV News’ Hip-Hop Brain Trust eventually voted Nicki into the plum #4 spot on the Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. In the summer of 2010, Minaj was the acid-tongued “two” to Drake’s “one” in Lil Wayne’s Young Money one-two punch. With her debut album still on the way, she was murdering features left and right. “When she hit the scene, she was just like the pretty girl alongside Wayne,” said Rahman Dukes, MTV News’ director of hip-hop news. “Drake was really the next one that everyone was looking out for.” Want to join the debate? Just hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! HOT STREAK Album: Pink Friday Selected Mixtapes: None Singles: “Super Bass,” “Fly” (featuring Rihanna) and “Starships” Street Bangers: “Did it on Em,” “Roman in Moscow,” “Stupid Hoe” Key Guest Appearances: Big Sean’s “Dance (A$$)” remix, Birdman’s “Y.U. Mad” and Drake’s “Make Me Proud” Meteoric Metrics: Nicki continued to dominate the singles chart thanks to “Super Bass,” which peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. Business Ventures: The Barbie starred in Mac’s Viva Glam campaign and linked with OPI to launch her own nail polish. Tours: She hit the road with Lil Wayne on his I Am Still Music Tour and Britney Spears on the Femme Fatale Tour. Monumental Moment: Nicki took home the Best Hip-Hop Video VMA for “Super Bass.” Forecast: With Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded on the way, Nicki should once again rule the airwaves in 2012, but Roman is a different story … But by the time she dropped her Pink Friday debut last November, the world was on notice. Now, Nicki’s success spans the pop and hip-hop worlds, and her fanbase is just as eclectic, with young girls and “Kens” all riding for the Young Money Barbie. Minaj’s song “Super Bass” was just a bonus track on the album, but it won over fans including squeaky-clean Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, both of whom jumped on the record, rapping along line for line to the infectious track. “Bass” may have even helped Nicki score a spot opening for Britney Spears on her Femme Fatale Tour. As far as our Hottest MCs criteria, Nicki meets them all. Her impact is undeniable and, lyrically, she holds her own when she’s playing with the boys: She stole the show on Big Sean’s “Dance (A$$)” remix and declared herself the Female Weezy on Birdman’s “Y.U. Mad.” Need more proof? Minaj shut down New York Fashion Week in September 2011. And she has conquered hip-hop’s digital landscape. “Recently, she broke the record for the most followed hip-hop artist on Twitter; her social media following is incredible,” said Nadeska Alexis, MTV’s RapFix blog editor. “She dropped the song ‘Stupid Hoe’ — people didn’t necessarily love the song [but] a week later it’s at 15 million views on YouTube.” While her songs may not always appeal to “the streets,” millions of her fans have bought into Nicki’s sound. And her performance at the 2012 Grammys , while controversial, was a huge honor and a testament to the lane she’s carved for herself. After the roundtable votes were tallied, Nicki was initially slotted at #5 with Young Money boss Wayne clocking in at #4, but several members of the Brain Trust felt strongly enough about Nicki’s accomplishments that her position warranted a second look. Hottest MCs moderator Sway Calloway called for a vote and in the end, six of the nine experts elected to move Nicki up to the #4 spot, sending Weezy down to #5. “Nicki Minaj doesn’t have to be Meek Mill, but at the same time she’s not Britney Spears,” said Steven Roberts, a segment producer/writer at MTV News. “I think Nicki Minaj is something special where she can be in the middle and she can be pop and hip-hop because I think hip-hop at this point is pop.” What do you think of our list? Chi-Town hero claims the Throne and Hottest MCs in the Game VII’s top 3 with a Twisted Fantasy and a groundbreaking joint album. By MTV News staff Kanye West Photo: Getty Images To be considered one of the Hottest MCs in the Game, a rapper has to build a solid case with lyrics and album sales, but buzz is just as important, and few artists can stir up a frenzy quite like Kanye West , who happens to have the verses and plaques to back it up. But that’s just touching the surface when it comes to why the Hip-Hop Brain Trust gave ‘Ye the #3 spot on our Hottest MCs in the Game VII list. The Chicago native set tongues wagging back on New Year’s Eve 2010, when he announced at a party in Las Vegas that his joint album with Jay-Z would arrive at the top of ’11. Although Watch the Throne didn’t actually drop until August 8, 2011, anticipation in the months leading up to its release was palpable. “Kanye came off of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy in 2010, and just the hype from that album rolled over into 2011, as he started prepping us for WTT, ” said Nadeska Alexis, MTV News’ RapFix blog editor. “Kanye was the only thing people could talk about for the first few months of the year.” Want to join the debate? Just hit us on Twitter using the hashtag #HottestMC! West and Jay teased fans with the single “H.A.M.” — later relegated to a bonus track — all while Kanye continued to push songs from his Grammy-winning solo LP. A flashy video for “All of the Lights” featured an appearance from Rihanna and generated plenty of chatter, and that folded right into the Watch the Throne hype. HOT STREAK Album: Watch the Throne with Jay-Z; My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Selected Mixtapes: None Singles: “All of the Lights” (with Rihanna, Kid Cudi and Fergie); “H.A.M,” “N—as in Paris” and “Otis” (all with Jay-Z) Street Bangers: “Paris” remix (with Jay-Z and T.I.) Key Guest Appearances: Big Sean’s “Marvin & Chardonnay” Meteoric Metrics: Watch the Throne debuted at #1 on the album charts and has sold approximately 1.3 million copies to date, while West’s Grammy-winning solo single “All of the Lights” was certified platinum Business Ventures: Inked an official distribution deal with Def Jam Records for G.O.O.D. Music imprint; launched DW by Kanye West line at Paris Fashion Week Tours: Along with Jay-Z, West put on one of the most anticipated hip-hop tours to date in support of Watch the Throne. They grossed $48.3 million across 26 dates. Monumental Moment: Not only did Kanye add “cray” to the rap vernacular, he joined Jay in performing “Paris” a record 11 times at one of their live shows Forecast: After picking up Grammys for Best Rap Album ( MBDTF ) and Best Rap Performance (“Otis”), Kanye is currently at work on the highly anticipated G.O.O.D. album. And, of course, the second incarnation of his fashion line is getting plenty of advance buzz. In the weeks before the album debuted, Throne fans were treated to more tidbits from the project, much of which had the indelible Kanye West stamp. Animal-inspired cover art designed by Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci? The brainchild of Kanye West, certainly. “Jay-Z has really stood alone over the course of his career and he never really let somebody else get in the front,” said Rahman Dukes, MTV News’ director of hip-hop news, about the collaboration. “This is the one time [he let someone take control] and that’s a huge nod to Kanye’s genius.” One of the key elements in building anticipation for the album was that the Throne successfully avoided a leak. The duo even threw a grand listening session at the Museum of Natural History in New York City — select music journalists and A-list insiders from Beyonc
My name is Kate, I’m 21. My friends Jessica (20), Nicole (21) and Shannon (20) all had a recent amazing Bieber experience. We are also very proud to say we are from CANADA! It all started off as a depressing day when the news of the “Home for the Holiday” tickets were releasing and going on sale. I was at work and saw the tweet Justin made. I knew tickets would sell out in seconds. We all have been dreaming for months to witness Justin Bieber in concert and on December 19 th all of our BIG DREAMS came true. Jessica phoned me at work mentioning she had 4 windows open on her laptop and scored 4 TICKETS! The tears of joy instantly rolled down my face at my Proactive booth when Jessica invited me. I then received quick text’s and tweets from Shannon and Nicole shortly after and found out we were all attending the “Home for the Holidays” concert at Massy Hall on December 21st together. Before heading to the concert, Jessica had an amazing idea to make JB Christmas tye-dye T-shirts. We thought we would be noticed but unfortunately we were not. I’m sure Justin would have loved our tye-dyeing skills. Finally December 21 st had arrived and we packed up and headed to Toronto. After arriving at Massy Hall and waiting in the rain for a half hour, we witnessed Justin Bieber and Jazzy Bieber stepping out of the car and entered the Hall! Our emotions and excitement was uncontrollable. The girls and I quickly rushed to our seats and waited until the concert started. After an hour wait, Dan Kanter entered the stage, followed by Justin. The excitement over the crowd was unbelievable . Bieber fans are not like any other fans. They are so dedicated. Personally the concert itself was by far the most amazing concert I have ever been too. It was so intimate and personal. Justin mentioned before performing that “Massey Hall wanted me to put on this huge performance but I didn’t want to. You are all my family, friends and fans. I want to make it the most memorable night possible”. Justin sang for 2 hours straight with no break and it was truly the most memorable night possible. Throughout the night jokes, tears, small humour mistakes were made and a quick “hello” from Jazzy Bieber on stage made the night so unforgettable. I never thought my friends and I would have the chance to express and share our experience about Justin Bieber in concert. To this day, I still think December 21st was a dream. Christmas 2011 will be a time I will remember forever because Justin gave my friends and I the best Christmas present possible. I do hope to meet him in the future and express how grateful I am as a fan to witness him in concert with my friends. I would also mention how amazing he is as a person because of his generous contributions and attitude towards people who need help. There is NO negative perception on Justin. As a human, you are entitled to make mistakes and move on. People will hate and put others down because it’s easy to do. Nicole, Jessica, Shannon and I adore Justin and will always be fans. We hope to see him again in concert when he arrives back to Ontario. Thank-you Justin for an amazing opportunity, your performance was incredible and life touching. You make us proud to be Canadians. Keep up the hard work, everything you have accomplished in your career you deserve. To all the fans who haven’t witnessed Justin in concert – Keep dreaming BIG and NEVER SAY NEVER. One day your dream will come true and you will have your Bieber experience .. Just like my friends and I– “If you don’t dream big, there’s no use in dreaming. If you don’t have faith, there’s nothing worth believing “- Justin Bieber -@NicoleSteffens, @_jpratt, @kateenwright, @shannsig See the article here: My name is Kate, I’m 21. The rapper talks fashion, feminism and Jay-Z in interviews with Vibe, Allure and New York Magazine. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj on the cover of Vibe Photo: Vibe As Nicki Minaj prepares to release her new album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, in April, she’s all over newsstands. She will appear on three different magazine covers, each showing different sides of the rapper and touching on her many philosophies about her career, her persona and her place in the rap world. Allure teased its April cover featuring Minaj, in which the sassy songstress sports a big, pink tulle skirt. In the interview, she opens up about telling Jay-Z he really does need to Watch the Throne with her around. “I had a little conversation with Jay-Z at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show,” she recalled. “He said, ‘Congratulations on all your success.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m coming for you. I’m coming for your spot, Mr. Mogul.’ ” Speaking of her supreme queen dominance, on the cover of the February/March issue of Vibe, she’s donning a sparkling crown and inside the issue she talks all about her place in the game as a woman. “It’s not hard to get your way when it’s your way or the highway. People either follow suit or they’re not around. I don’t really like the sound of that, ’cause that sounds like a temper tantrum. I’m just very black and white when it comes to my business,” she said. “There’s really no gray area. I really don’t have a lot of small talk with people I work with. It’s pretty much let’s get the job done. In the beginning, if people didn’t know me they’d probably assume I wasn’t smart or wasn’t business savvy. But once you sit and talk to me, it’s a different story.” And, then there’s her watercolor-y New York Magazine cover where the fashionista talks about her place among the hip fashion crowd. “I’m not impressed to be in that world. I’m in my own world. I think sometimes the fashion world isn’t even about clothes anymore; it’s about this ‘in’ crowd, and I’m not into that,” she explains, after sharing what her fashion mantra is. “I like the idea of doing something that everyone else is not. I get high off that. Just the idea that other people don’t have the balls to do something — that’s my thing.” What is your favorite Nicki Minaj magazine cover? Leave your comment below! Before Deion Sanders called himself “Primetime,” before T.O. had a reality show, there was Jim Brown. He was a stud on the football field, as a running back from the Cleveland Browns, and on screen as an action hero. He is considered the first black action star thanks to his roles in movies such as “Dirty Dozen” and “Ice Station Zebra.” His records included: • Most yards in a single-season (1,863 in 1963) • Career rushing (12,312 yards) • All-time leader in rushing touchdowns (106) • Total touchdowns (126) • All-purpose yards (15,549) In this interview, Jim Brown lashes out at today’s black athletes calling them buffoonish with their celebration dances and antics. He says today’s athletes are playing the “yessir boss slaves,” and don’t know the dignity of what it means to be a man. Newsone compiled a list of Heisman winners.
